Rational Construction of 2D Fe3 O4 @Carbon Core-Shell Nanosheets as Advanced Anode Materials for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Half/Full Cells

Carbon coating on metal oxide materials for electrochemical energy storage

During the past decades, nano-structured metal oxide electrode materials have received growing attention due to their low development cost and high theoretical specific capacity, accordingly, quite a lot of metal oxide electrode materials are being used in electrochemical energy storage devices. However, the further development was limited by the relatively low electrical conductivity and the volume expansion during electrochemical reactions. Thus, many approaches have been proposed to obtain high-efficiency metal oxide electrode materials, such as designing nanomaterials with ideal morphology and high specific surface area, optimizing with carbon-based materials (such as graphene and glucose) to prepare nanocomposites, combining with conductive substrates to enhance the conductivity of electrodes, etc. Owning to the advantages of low cost and high chemical stability of carbon materials, core-shell structure formed by carbon-coated metal oxides is considered to be a promising solution to solve these problems. Therefore, this review mainly focuses on recent research advances in the field of carbon-coated metal oxides for energy storage, summarizing the advantages and disadvantages of common metal oxides and different types of carbon sources, and proposing methods to optimize the material properties in terms of structure and morphology, carbon layer thickness, coating method, specific surface area and pore size distribution, as well as improving electrical conductivity. In addition, the double or multi-layer coating strategy is also a reflection of the continuous development of carbon coating method. Hopefully, this rereview may provide a new direction for the renewal and development of future energy storage electrode materials.

Facile synthesis of a rod-like porous carbon framework confined magnetite nanoparticle composite for superior lithium-ion storage

This work demonstrates a streamlined method to engineer a rod-like porous carbon framework (RPC) confined magnetite nanoparticles composite (Fe₃O₄/RPC) starting from metallic iron and gallic acid (GA) solution. First, a mild redox reaction was triggered between Fe and GA to prepare a rod-shaped metal-organic framework (MOF) ferric gallate sample (Fe-GA). Then, the Fe-GA sample was calcinated to obtain a prototypic RPC supported metal iron nanoparticle intermediate sample (Fe/RPC). Finally, the Fe₃O₄/RPC composite was synthesized after a simple hydrothermal reaction. The Fe₃O₄/RPC composite exhibited competitive electrochemical behaviors, which has a high gravimetric capacity of 1140 mAh·g^-1 at a high charge and discharge current of 1000 mA·g^-1 after 300 cycles. The engineered RPC supportive matrix not only offers adequate voids to buffer the volume expansion from inside well-dispersed Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles, but also facilitates both the ionic and electronic transport during the electrochemical reactions. The overall material synthesis involves of no hazardous or expensive chemicals, which can be regarded to be a scalable and green approach. The obtained samples have a good potential to be further developed for wider applications.

A Bio-Inspired Nanotubular Na2MoO4/TiO2 Composite as a High-Performance Anodic Material for Lithium-Ion Batteries

A train of bio-inspired nanotubular Na₂MoO₄/TiO₂ composites were synthesized by using a natural cellulose substance (e.g., commercial ordinary filter paper) as the structural template. The TiO₂ gel films were coated on the cellulose nanofiber surfaces via a sol-gel method firstly, followed with the deposition of the poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride)/Na₂MoO₄ (PDDA/Na₂MoO₄) bi-layers several times, through the layer-by-layer self-assembly route, yielding the (PDDA/Na₂MoO₄)_n/TiO₂-gel/cellulose composite, which was calcined in air to give various Na₂MoO₄/TiO₂ nanocomposites containing different Na₂MoO₄ contents (15.4, 24.1, and 41.4%). The resultant nanocomposites all inherited the three-dimensionally porous network structure of the premier cellulose substance, which were formed by hierarchical TiO₂ nanotubes anchored with the Na₂MoO₄ layers. When employed as anodic materials for lithium-ion batteries, those Na₂MoO₄/TiO₂ nanocomposites exhibited promoted electrochemical performances in comparison with the Na₂MoO₄ powder and pure TiO₂ nanotubes, which was resulted from the high capacity of the Na₂MoO₄ component and the buffering effects of the TiO₂ nanotubes. Among all the nanotubular Na₂MoO₄/TiO₂ composites, the one with a Na₂MoO₄ content of 41.4% showed the best electrochemical properties, such as the cycling stability with a capacity of 180.22 mAh g⁻¹ after 200 charge/discharge cycles (current density: 100 mA g⁻¹) and the optimal rate capability.

Electronic modulation of nickel selenide by copper doping and in situ carbon coating towards high-rate and high-energy density lithium ion half/full batteries

Over the past decades, metal selenides have drawn considerable attention due to their high theoretical specific capacity. However, huge volume changes and sluggish electrochemical transfer kinetics hinder their applications in energy storage and conversion. In this work, we demonstrate an efficient and ingenious synthesis strategy to regulate nickel selenide electrodes by the introduction of copper and in situ coating with carbon (Cu-NiSe2@C). When used as anodes for lithium-ion batteries, the as-synthesized Cu-NiSe2@C delivered a high capacity of 1630 mA h g-1 at 1.0 A g-1 after 200 cycles and excellent rate performance as well as long-term cycling stability with a high capacity of 489 mA h g-1 at 10 A g-1 after 20 000 cycles. When coupled with a commercial LiFePO4 cathode, the full cells showed a high capacity of 463 mA h g-1 at 0.2 A g-1. Their superior electrochemical performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect of the in situ carbon coating and copper doping, which can promote the electron/ion transfer kinetics, as well as alleviate the volume expansion during cycling. This work will open new opportunities for the development of high-performance anodes for lithium storage.
