Catalytic Gold Chemistry: From Simple Salts to Complexes for Regioselective C-H Bond Functionalization

Highly Stable Carboranyl Ligated Gold Nano-Catalysts for Regioselective Aromatic Bromination

Achieving electronic/steric control and realizing selectivity regulation in nanocatalysis remains a formidable challenge, as the dynamic nature of metal-ligand interfaces, including dissolution (metal leaching) and structural reconstruction, poses significant obstacles. Herein, we disclose carboranyls (CBs) as unprecedented carbon-bonded functional ligands (Eads.CB-Au(111)=-2.90 eV) for gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), showcasing their exceptional stabilization capability that is attributed by strong Au-C bonds combined with B-H⋅⋅⋅Au interactions. The synthesized CB@AuNPs exhibit core(Aun)-satellite(CB2Au-) structure, showing high stability towards multiple stimuli (110 °C, pH=1-12, thiol etchants). In addition, different from conventional AuNP catalysts such as triphenylphosphine (PPh3) stabilized AuNPs, dissolution of catalytically active gold species was suppressed in CB@AuNPs under the reaction conditions. Leveraging these distinct features, CB@AuNPs realized outstanding p : o selectivities in aromatic bromination. Unbiased arenes including chlorobenzene (up to >30 : 1), bromobenzene (15 : 1) and phenyl acrylate were examined using CB@AuNPs as catalysts to afford highly-selective p-products. Both carboranyl ligands and carboranyl derived counterions are crucial for such regioselective transformation. This work has provided valuable insights for AuNPs in realizing diverse regioselective transformations.

Synthesis and Electrochemical Study of Gold(I) Carbene Complexes

In this work, we have prepared and characterized some gold compounds wearing a N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand as well as alkynyl derivatives with different substituents. The study of their electrochemical behavior reveals that these complexes show an irreversible wave at potentials ranging between -2.79 and -2.91 V, referenced to the ferrocenium/ferrocene pair. DFT calculations indicate that the reduction occurs mainly on the aryl-C≡C fragment. The cyclic voltammetry experiments under CO2 atmosphere show an increase in the faradaic current of the reduction wave compared to the experiments under argon atmosphere, indicating a possible catalytic activity towards the carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR).

Gold-catalyzed cyclization and cycloaddition in natural product synthesis

Covering: 2016 to mid 2023Transition metal catalysis, known for its remarkable capacity to expedite the assembly of molecular complexity from readily available starting materials in a single operation, occupies a central position in contemporary chemical synthesis. Within this landscape, gold-catalyzed reactions present a novel and versatile paradigm, offering robust frameworks for accessing diverse structural motifs. In this review, we highlighted a curated selection of publications in the past 8 years, focusing on the deployment of homogeneous gold catalysis in the ring-forming step for the total synthesis of natural products. These investigations are categorized based on the specific ring formations they engender, accentuating the prevailing gold-catalyzed methodologies applied to surmount intricate challenges in natural products synthesis.

Advancing Gold Redox Catalysis: Mechanistic Insights, Nucleophilicity-Guided Transmetalation, and Predictive Frameworks for the Oxidation of Aryl Gold(I) Complexes

Gold redox catalysis, often facilitated by hypervalent iodine(III) reagents, offers unique reactivity but its progress is mainly hindered by an incomplete mechanistic understanding. In this study, we investigated the reaction between the gold(I) complexes [(aryl)Au(PR3 )] and the hypervalent iodine(III) reagent PhICl2 , both experimentally and computationally and provided an explanation for the formation of divergent products as the ligands bonded to the gold(I) center change. We tackled this essential question by uncovering an intriguing transmetalation mechanism that takes place between gold(I) and gold(III) complexes. We found that the ease of transmetalation is governed by the nucleophilicity of the gold(I) complex, [(aryl)Au(PR3 )], with greater nucleophilicity leading to a lower activation energy barrier. Remarkably, transmetalation is mainly controlled by a single orbital - the gold dx 2 -y 2 orbital. This orbital also has a profound influence on the reactivity of the oxidative addition step. In this way, the fundamental mechanistic basis of divergent outcomes in reactions of aryl gold(I) complexes with PhICl2 was established and these observations are reconciled from first principles. The theoretical model developed in this study provides a conceptual framework for anticipating the outcomes of reactions involving [(aryl)Au(PR3 )] with PhICl2 , thereby establishing a solid foundation for further advancements in this field.

Synthesis of a Novel Gold(I) Complex and Evaluation of Its Anticancer Properties in Breast Cancer Cells

BACKGROUND

Platinum complexes are commonly used for cancer chemotherapy; however, they are not only highly-priced but also have various side effects. It is, therefore, important to design affordable anticancer drugs with minimal side effects.

METHODS

We synthesized a new gold(I) complex, PF6{(BDPEA)(TPPMS) digold(I)} (abbreviated as PBTDG) and tested its cytotoxicity in MCF-7 breast cancer cells. We also evaluated the effects of PBTDG on mitochondrial membrane potential, generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and apoptosis in breast cancer cells.

RESULTS

The IC50 values for PBTDG and sorafenib were found to be 1.48 μM and 4.45 μM, respectively. Exposure to PBTDG caused significant and concentration-dependent depletion of ATP and disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential. PBTDG induced 2.6, 3.6, and 5.7-fold apoptosis for 1 μM, 3 μM, and 10 μM concentrations, respectively. The induction of apoptosis by the same concentrations of sorafenib was 1.2, 1.3, and 1.6-fold, respectively. The low concentration of PBTDG (1 μM) induced the generation of ROS by 99.83%, which was significantly higher than the ROS generation caused by the same concentration of sorafenib (73.76%). The ROS induction caused by higher concentrations (5 μM) of PBTDG and sorafenib were 104.95% and 122.11%, respectively.

CONCLUSION

The lower concentration of PBTDG produced similar cytotoxicity and apoptotic effects that were caused by a comparatively higher concentration of known anticancer drug (sorafenib). The anticancer effects of PBTDG are attributed to its tendency to disrupt mitochondrial membrane potential, induction of apoptosis and generation of ROS. Further studies are warranted to test the anticancer effects of PBTDG in animal models of cancer.

Gold(I)-Mediated Radioiododecarboxylation of Arenes

A novel radioiodination method is developed using carboxylic acids as radiolabeling precursors. This method involves decarboxylation and organogold(I) intermediate formation, enabling efficient radioiodination of (hetero)arenes and cinnamic and phenylpropiolic acids. Additionally, we demonstrated the prolonged stability of crude gold(I) organometallic compounds, showcasing their enduring radiolabeling capabilities.

Catalyst- and Substrate-Controlled Regiodivergent Synthesis of Carbazoles through Gold-Catalyzed Cyclizations of Indole-Functionalized Alkynols

A wide variety of regioselectively substituted carbazole derivatives can be synthesized by the gold-catalyzed cyclization of alkynols bearing an indol-3-yl and an additional group at the homopropargylic positions. The regioselectivity of the process can be controlled by both the oxidation state of the gold catalyst and the electronic nature of the substituents of the alkynol moiety. The 1,2-alkyl migration in the spiroindoleninium intermediate, generated after indole attack to the activated alkyne, is favored with gold(I) complexes and for electron-rich aromatic substituents at the homopropargylic position, whereas the 1,2-alkenyl shift is preferred when using gold(III) salts and for alkyl or non-electron-rich aromatic groups.

Direct Regioselective Hydro(hetero)arylation/Cyclocondensation Reactions of β-(2-Aminophenyl)-α,β-ynones by Means of Transition-Metal Catalysis/Brønsted Acid Synergism: Experimental Results and Computational Insights

Experimental results and computational insights explain the key role of transition-metal catalysis/Brønsted acid synergism in the achievement of the sequential regioselective direct heteroarylation/cyclocondensation reactions of β-(2-aminophenyl)-α,β-ynones with a variety of electron-rich aromatic heterocyclic/arenes to afford quinoline-(hetero)aromatic hybrids. The first approach to the synthesis of 4-(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)quinolines is described. The effectiveness of various transition metals is compared.

Noncovalent Synergy: Aurophilicity and Aryl Stacking in Bis(gold(I)aryl)-dmpm Complexes

Bis(dimethylphosphino)methane (dmpm) was used as a ligand to synthesize four semi-supported dinuclear gold(I) complexes, dmpm(AuR)₂ (R = Cl, C₆H₅, C₆Cl₅, and C₆F₅), which were studied concerning the synergistic effects of two weak noncovalent interactions: aurophilic and aryl-aryl stacking interactions. The chloro-substituted complex was synthesized by the ligand substitution of (tht)AuCl with dmpm and further functionalized by the reaction with PhMgBr or in situ-generated C₆Cl₅Li to afford the phenyl- and pentachlorophenyl-substituted compounds, respectively. The pentafluorophenyl-substituted gold complex was generated by the ligand substitution of (tht)Au(C₆F₅) with dmpm. All complexes were characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, CHN analyses, and X-ray diffraction experiments. Additionally, the basic photoluminescence properties of dmpm(AuCl)₂, dmpm(AuC₆Cl₅)₂, and dmpm(AuC₆F₅)₂ were examined. The aggregation behavior of dmpm(AuC₆F₅)₂ was further investigated by variable-temperature diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy experiments.

Recent advances in the chemical oxidation of gaseous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in liquid phase

The chemical oxidation of gaseous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in liquid phase may possess great advantages in its high removal efficiency, mild conditions, good reliability, wide applicability, and little potential secondary pollution, which has aroused extensive research interests in the past decade. This Overview Article summarizes the latest achievements to eliminate VOCs by chemical oxidation in liquid phase including gas-liquid mass transfer, homogeneous/heterogeneous oxidation, electrochemical oxidation, and coupling technologies. Important research contributions are highlighted in terms of mass transfer, catalytic materials, removal/mineralization efficiency, and reaction mechanism to evaluate their potential industrial applications. The current challenges and future strategies are discussed from the viewpoint of the deep degradation of refractory VOC substrates and their intermediates. It is anticipated that this review will attract more attention toward the development and application of chemical oxidation methods to clear complex industrial organic exhaust gas.

Enantioselective C-H Functionalization Reactions under Gold Catalysis

Transition metal-catalyzed enantioselective functionalization of ubiquitous C-H bonds has proven to be promising field as it offers the construction of chiral molecular complexity in a step- and atom-economical manner. In recent years, gold has emerged as an attractive contender for catalyzing such reactions. The unique reactivities and selectivities offered by gold catalysts have been exploited to access numerous asymmetric transformations based on gold-catalyzed C-H functionalization processes. Herein, this review critically highlights the major advances and discoveries made in the enantioselective C-H functionalization under gold catalysis which is accompanied by mechanistic insights at appropriate places.

Access to 3-Sulfonamidoquinolines by Gold-Catalyzed Cyclization of 1-(2'-Azidoaryl)propargylsulfonamides through 1,2-N Migration

We describe a gold-catalyzed cyclization of 1-(2'-azidoaryl)propargylsulfonamides for the synthesis of 3-sulfonamidoquinolines, featuring a rare and highly selective 1,2-N migration. The key α-imino gold carbene intermediate is generated through an intramolecular nucleophilic attack of the azide group to the Au-activated triple bonds in a 6-endo-dig manner.
