Diverse Cooperative Reactivity at a Square Planar Aluminium Complex and Catalytic Reduction of CO2

Ligand-enforced geometric constraints and associated reactivity in p-block compounds

The geometry at an element centre can generally be predicted based on the number of electron pairs around it using valence shell electron pair repulsion (VSEPR) theory. Strategies to distort p-block compounds away from these predicted geometries have gained considerable interest due to the unique structural outcomes, spectroscopic properties or reactivity patterns engendered by such distortion. This review presents an up-to-date group-wise summary of this exciting and rapidly growing field with a focus on understanding how the ligand employed unlocks structural features, which in turn influences the associated reactivity. Relevant geometrically constrained compounds from groups 13-16 are discussed, along with selected stoichiometric and catalytic reactions. Several areas for advancement in this field are also discussed. Collectively, this review advances the notion of geometric tuning as an important lever, alongside electronic and steric tuning, in controlling bonding and reactivity at p-block centres.

Quo Vadis CO2 Activation: Catalytic Reduction of CO2 to Methanol Using Aluminum and Gallium/Carbon-based Ambiphiles

We report on so-called "hidden FLPs" (FLP: frustrated Lewis pair) consisting of a phosphorus ylide featuring a group 13 fragment in the ortho position of a phenyl ring scaffold to form five-membered ring structures. Although the formation of the Lewis acid/base adducts was observed in the solid state, most of the title compounds readily react with carbon dioxide to provide stable insertion products. Strikingly, 0.3-3.0 mol% of the reported aluminum and gallium/carbon-based ambiphiles catalyze the reduction of CO2 to methanol with satisfactory high selectivity and yields using pinacol borane as stoichiometric reduction equivalent. Comprehensive computational studies provided valuable mechanistic insights and shed more light on activity differences.

Quest for Active Species in Al/B-Catalyzed CO2 Hydrosilylation

We demonstrate the catalytic role of aluminum and boron centers in aluminum borohydride [(2-Me2CH2C6H4)(C6H5)Al(μ-H)2B(C6H5)2] (6) during carbon dioxide (CO2) hydrosilylation. Preliminary investigations into CO2 reduction using [(2-Me2NCH2C6H4)(H)Al(μ-H)]2 (1) and [Ph3C][B(3,5-C6H3Cl2)4] (2) in the presence of Et3SiH and PhSiH3 resulted in CH2(OSiR3)2 and CH3OSiR3, which serve as formaldehyde and methanol surrogates, respectively. In pursuit of identifying the active catalytic species, three compounds, B(3,5-C6H3Cl2)3 (3), [(2-Me2NCH2C6H4)(3,5-C6H3Cl2)Al(μ-H)2B(3,5-C6H3Cl2)2] (4), and [(2-Me2NCH2C6H4)2Al(THF)][B(3,5-C6H3Cl2)4] (5), were isolated. Among compounds 2-5, the highest catalytic conversion was achieved by 4. Further, 4 and 6 were prepared in a straightforward method by treating 1 with 3 and BPh3, respectively. 6 was found to be in equilibrium with 1 and BPh3, thus making the catalytic process of 6 more efficient than that of 4. Computational investigations inferred that CO2 reduction occurs across the Al-H bond, while Si-H activation occurs through a concerted mechanism involving an in situ generated aluminum formate species and BPh3.

Accelerating σ-Bond Metathesis at Sn(II) Centers

Molecular main-group hydride catalysts are attractive as cheap and Earth-abundant alternatives to transition-metal analogues. In the case of the latter, specific steric and electronic tuning of the metal center through ligand choice has enabled the iterative and rational development of superior catalysts. Analogously, a deeper understanding of electronic structure-activity relationships for molecular main-group hydrides should facilitate the development of superior main-group hydride catalysts. Herein, we report a modular Sn-Ni bimetallic system in which we systematically vary the ancillary ligand on Ni, which, in turn, tunes the Sn center. This tuning is probed using Sn L1 XAS as a measure of electron density at the Sn center. We demonstrate that increased electron density at Sn centers accelerates the rate of σ-bond metathesis, and we employ this understanding to develop a highly active Sn-based catalyst for the hydroboration of CO2 using pinacolborane. Additionally, we demonstrate that engineering London dispersion interactions within the secondary coordination sphere of Sn allows for further rate acceleration. These results show that the electronics of main-group catalysts can be controlled without the competing effects of geometry perturbations and that this manifests in substantial reactivity differences.

Calix[4]pyrrolato-germane-(thf)2: Unlocking the Anti-van't Hoff-Le Bel Reactivity of Germanium(IV) by Ligand Dissociation

Anti-van't Hoff-Le Bel configured p-block element species possess intrinsically high reactivity and are thus challenging to isolate. Consequently, numerous elements in this configuration, including square-planar germanium(IV), remain unexplored. Herein, we follow a concept to reach anti-van't Hoff-Le Bel reactivity by ligand dissociation from a rigid calix[4]pyrrole germane in its bis(thf) adduct. While the macrocyclic ligand assures square-planar coordination in the uncomplexed form, the labile thf donors provide robustness for isolation on a multigram scale. Unique properties of a low-lying acceptor orbital imparted to germanium(IV) can be verified, e.g., by isolating an elusive anionic hydrido germanate and exploiting it for challenging bond activations. Aldehydes, water, alcohol, and a CN triple bond are activated for the first time by germanium-ligand cooperativity. Unexpected behaviors against fluoride ion donors disclose critical interferences of a putative redox-coupled fluoride ion transfer during the experimental determination of Lewis acidity. Overall, we showcase how ligand lability grants access to the uncharted chemistry of anti-van't Hoff-Le Bel germanium(IV) and line up this element as a member in the emerging class of structurally constrained p-block elements.
