Review on CO2 Capture Using Amine-Functionalized Materials

CO₂ capture from industry sectors or directly from the atmosphere is drawing much attention on a global scale because of the drastic changes in the climate and ecosystem which pose a potential threat to human health and life on Earth. In the past decades, CO₂ capture technology relied on classical liquid amine scrubbing. Due to its high energy consumption and corrosive property, CO₂ capture using solid materials has recently come under the spotlight. A variety of porous solid materials were reported such as zeolites and metal-organic frameworks. However, amine-functionalized porous materials outperform all others in terms of CO₂ adsorption capacity and regeneration efficiency. This review provides a brief overview of CO₂ capture by various amines and mechanistic aspects for newcomers entering into this field. This review also covers a state-of-the-art regeneration method, visible/UV light-triggered CO₂ desorption at room temperature. In the last section, the current issues and future perspectives are summarized.

Carbon Dioxide Capture Chemistry of Amino Acid Functionalized Metal-Organic Frameworks in Humid Flue Gas

Metal-organic framework-808 has been functionalized with 11 amino acids (AA) to produce a series of MOF-808-AA structures. The adsorption of CO₂ under flue gas conditions revealed that glycine- and dl-lysine-functionalized MOF-808 (MOF-808-Gly and -dl-Lys) have the highest uptake capacities. Enhanced CO₂ capture performance in the presence of water was observed and studied by using single-component sorption isotherms, CO₂/H₂O binary isotherm, and dynamic breakthrough measurements. The key to the favorable performance was uncovered by deciphering the mechanism of CO₂ capture in the pores and attributed to the formation of bicarbonate as evidenced by ¹³C and ¹⁵N solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy studies. On the basis of these results, we examined the performance of MOF-808-Gly in simulated coal flue gas conditions and found that it is possible to capture and release CO₂ by vacuum swing adsorption. MOF-808-Gly was cycled at least 80 times with full retention of performance. This study significantly advances our understanding of CO₂ chemistry in MOFs by revealing how strongly bound amine moieties to the MOF backbone create the chemistry and environment within the pores, leading to the binding and release of CO₂ under mild conditions without application of heat.

Performance-Based Screening of Porous Materials for Carbon Capture

Computational screening methods have changed the way new materials and processes are discovered and designed. For adsorption-based gas separations and carbon capture, recent efforts have been directed toward the development of multiscale and performance-based screening workflows where we can go from the atomistic structure of an adsorbent to its equilibrium and transport properties at different scales, and eventually to its separation performance at the process level. The objective of this work is to review the current status of this new approach, discuss its potential and impact on the field of materials screening, and highlight the challenges that limit its application. We compile and introduce all the elements required for the development, implementation, and operation of multiscale workflows, hence providing a useful practical guide and a comprehensive source of reference to the scientific communities who work in this area. Our review includes information about available materials databases, state-of-the-art molecular simulation and process modeling tools, and a complete catalogue of data and parameters that are required at each stage of the multiscale screening. We thoroughly discuss the challenges associated with data availability, consistency of the models, and reproducibility of the data and, finally, propose new directions for the future of the field.
