CeO 2 / TiO 2 / SiO 2 nanocatalyst for the photocatalytic and sonophotocatalytic degradation of chlorpyrifos

Photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline using a novel WO3-ZnO/AC under visible light irradiation: Optimization of effective factors by RSM-CCD

Mitigating pharmaceutical pollution in the global environment is imperative, and tetracycline (TC) is a commonly utilized antibiotic in human and veterinary medicine. The persistent existence of TC highlights the necessity of establishing efficient measures to protect water systems and the environment from detrimental contaminants. Herein, a novel rhubarb seed waste-derived activated carbon-supported photocatalyst (WO3-ZnO/RUAC) was synthesized by combining wet impregnation and ultrasonic methods. The activated carbon (AC) was obtained from rhubarb seed waste for the first time via chemical activation. The function of AC as an electron acceptor and in separating electron-hole pairs was illuminated by characterization analyses that included XRD, FTIR, XPS, SEM, TEM, PL, EIS, TPC, and UV-DRS. Using the response surface methodology-central composite design (RSM-CCD) technique, the synthesis parameters of the composite were systematically optimized. Under ideal conditions, with a TC concentration of 33 mg. L-1, pH of 4.57, irradiation time of 108 min, and catalyst dose of 0.85 g. L-1, the highest degradation efficiency of TC by this composite, achieved 96.5%, and it was reusable for five cycles. Subsequently, trapping tests and electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis were conducted, elucidating that •OH and •O2- radicals played pivotal roles in the photocatalytic degradation of TC. This research offers valuable insights into utilizing the AC-based photocatalyst to degrade pharmaceutical micropollutants effectively.

Synthesis and characterization of Fe3O4@SiO2 -supported metal-organic framework PAEDTC@MIL-101 (Fe) for degradation of chlorpyrifos and diazinon pesticides

In this study, a new core-shell Fe3O4@SiO2/PAEDTC@MIL-101 (Fe) photocatalyst was prepared by sol-gel method and used to degrade diazinon (DZN) and chlorpyrifos (CPS) from aqueous solutions. The characteristics analyzed by various techniques indicate that the core-shell photocatalyst with a specific surface area of 992 m2/g, pore size of 1.35 nm and saturation magnetization of nanocomposite was 12 emu/g has been successfully synthesized and can be separated from the reaction solution by a magnetic field. The maximum efficiencies of DZN (98.8%) and CPS (99.9%) were provided at pH of 5, photocatalyst dosage of 0.6 g/L, pollutant concentration of 25 mg/L, radiation intensity of 15 W, and time of 60 min. The presence of anions such as sulfate, nitrate, bicarbonate, phosphate, and chloride had a negative effect on the performance of the photocatalysis system. Compared to the adsorption and photolysis systems alone, the photocatalytic process based on Fe3O4@SiO2/PAEDTC@MIL-101 (Fe) under two UV and visible light sources showed a high efficiency of 90% in the reaction time of 60 min. The BOD5/COD ratio improved after 50 min to above 0.4 with TOC and COD removal rates >80%. Scavenging tests showed that •OH radical, hole (h+), electron (e-), and O2•- anion were produced in the reaction reactor, and the •OH radical was the dominant species in the degradation of DZN and CPS. The stability tests confirmed the recyclability of the photocatalyst in 360 min of reactions, with a minimum reduction of 7%. Energy consumption for the present system during different reactions was between 15.61 and 25.06 kWh/m3 for DZN degradation and 10-22.87 kWh/m3 for CPS degradation.

Bioresource Polymer Composite for Energy Generation and Storage: Developments and Trends

The ever-growing demand of human society for clean and reliable energy sources spurred a substantial academic interest in exploring the potential of biological resources for developing energy generation and storage systems. As a result, alternative energy sources are needed in populous developing countries to compensate for energy deficits in an environmentally sustainable manner. This review aims to evaluate and summarize the recent progress in bio-based polymer composites (PCs) for energy generation and storage. The articulated review provides an overview of energy storage systems, e. g., supercapacitors and batteries, and discusses the future possibilities of various solar cells (SCs), using both past research progress and possible future developments as a basis for discussion. These studies examine systematic and sequential advances in different generations of SCs. Developing novel PCs that are efficient, stable, and cost-effective is of utmost importance. In addition, the current state of high-performance equipment for each of the technologies is evaluated in detail. We also discuss the prospects, future trends, and opportunities regarding using bioresources for energy generation and storage, as well as the development of low-cost and efficient PCs for SCs.

An Overview of Photocatalytic Membrane Degradation Development

Environmental pollution has become a worldwide issue. Rapid industrial and agricultural practices have increased organic contaminants in water supplies. Hence, many strategies have been developed to address this concern. In order to supply clean water for various applications, high-performance treatment technology is required to effectively remove organic and inorganic contaminants. Utilizing photocatalytic membrane reactors (PMRs) has shown promise as a viable alternative process in the water and wastewater industry due to its efficiency, low cost, simplicity, and low environmental impact. PMRs are commonly categorized into two main categories: those with the photocatalyst suspended in solution and those with the photocatalyst immobilized in/on a membrane. Herein, the working and fouling mechanisms in PMRs membranes are investigated; the interplay of fouling and photocatalytic activity and the development of fouling prevention strategies are elucidated; and the significance of photocatalysis in membrane fouling mechanisms such as pore plugging and cake layering is thoroughly explored.

Green synthesized Ag decorated CeO2 nanoparticles: Efficient photocatalysts and potential antibacterial agents

Implication of natural resources for manufacturing of nanoparticles is sustainable, economical and contaminant free approach towards ecological and medical applications. Herein, CeO₂ and Ag/CeO₂ nanoparticles are green synthesized from Morinda tinctoria plant extract. The phase structure, surface morphology, optical identity, Ce(III) and Ce(IV) valency of the synthesized CeO₂ and Ag/CeO₂ nanoparticles are explored. The X-ray diffraction analysis indicated the formation of cubic phase CeO₂ and cubic silver decorated CeO₂ nanoparticles. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy revealed the metal decoration of CeO₂ nanoparticles, metal-oxygen stretching, indicating the plant molecules reduction and stabilization. UV-visible spectroscopy shown the decreased band gap owing to silver modification. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs displayed spherical morphology of the nanoparticles. Elemental composition and sample purity is assessed by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Double oxidation of Ce, double splitting energy of Ag and lattice oxygen are observed from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Photocatalytic activity of Ag/CeO₂ exposed the enhanced photocatalytic activity up to 94% where CeO₂ nanoparticles gave 60% degradation of bromophenol blue (BB). The plasmonic decoration of silver on the ceria surface induced the charge separations and free radical reactions. Moreover, Ag/CeO₂ nanoparticles are seen as superior antibacterial agents than CeO₂ towards both E.coli and S.aureus. Hence, the silver decorated metal oxide photocatalyst successfully degraded the BB dye and inactivated the bacterial strains. This report established a future research in green synthesis of multipurpose metal nanoparticles.

Comparative Study of Sonophotocatalytic, Photocatalytic, and Catalytic Activities of Magnesium and Chitosan-Doped Tin Oxide Quantum Dots

The present study demonstrates the hydrothermal synthesis of SnO₂ quantum dots (QDs) doped with different concentrations (2, 4 wt %) of magnesium (Mg) and a fixed amount of chitosan (CS). The obtained samples were investigated through a number of characterizations for optical analysis, elemental composition, crystal structure, functional group presence, interlayer spacing, and surface morphology. The XRD spectrum revealed the tetragonal structure of SnO₂ with no significant variations occurring upon the addition of CS and Mg. The crystallite size of QDs was reduced by incorporation of dopants. The optical absorption spectra revealed a red shift, assigned to the reduction of the band gap energy upon doping. TEM analysis proved that the few nanorod-like structures of CS overlapped with SnO₂ QDs, and agglomeration was observed upon Mg doping. The incorporation of dopants little enhanced the d-spacing of SnO₂ QDs. Moreover, the synthesized nanocatalyst was utilized to calculate the degradation percentage of methylene blue (MB) dye. Afterward, a comparative analysis of catalytic activity, photocatalytic activity, and sonophotocatalytic activity was carried out. Notably, 4% Mg/CS-doped QDs showed maximum sonophotocatalytic degradation of MB in basic medium compared to other activities. Lastly, the prepared nanocatalyst was found to be efficient for dye degradation in any environment and inexpensive.

Pesticide pollutants in the environment - A critical review on remediation techniques, mechanism and toxicological impact

The excessive and unorganised utilisation of pesticides have posed negative impacts on soil and water at higher levels. Pesticides are a major class of persistent organic compounds with high resistance to natural biodegradation and enhanced tendency to bio accumulate. The severe health hazards imposed on the living organisms hinder the ecosystem and lead to chronic and irreversible health issues. Photocatalytic method is reported as a potential alternative with a variety of techniques and materials that are safer, easier, durable, cost-effective and efficient. Nanomaterials play a key role in this domain due to their versatility. In particular, nanostructured materials of organized shapes and morphological properties have gained enormous attention in research and real-time applications. Specifically, nanomaterials like nanotubes, nanorods and nanowires have unique properties and anisotropic structure that make them more suitable for treating pesticide wastes with photocatalysis. Variety of tuning methods and materials are emerging to enhance the activity of titanium and zinc based nanocatalysts in remediation methods. In the present article, four pesticides, namely, atrazine, chlorpyrifos, paraquat and naphthalene are chosen due to their common occurrence and usage in agricultural applications. These pesticides are highly toxic and need special attention to explore appropriate remediation methods. The report also details the latest innovations reported by several research studies in exploring the potential of specially synthesised nanoparticles for photocatalytic removal of pesticide pollutants from environment. For zinc-based hybrid nanomaterials, the maximum disintegration reported were 99%, 98%, 73.3% and 92.3% for atrazine, chlorpyrifos, paraquat and naphthalene, respectively.
