Abstract
Two spirocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon derivatives were prepared to clarify the molecular geometry effects on the regulation of the crystalline morphologies and photophysical behaviors of organic nanocrystals. Due to the different structural symmetry of a spiro-center, distinguishing nanocrystal morphologies with unique crystallization-enhanced/quenched emission was achieved.

Abstract
A three-dimensional bay-annulated-indigo (BAI) tetramer has been prepared by appending BAI units onto a low-cost spiro[fluorene-9,9'-xanthene] (SFX) core. The target compound 4BAI-SFX exhibits strong and broad absorption in the visible region covering the range of 450~700 nm. The electrochemical measurement illuminates the characteristics of a deep lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level and multiple redox states of 4BAI-SFX. These results suggest that 4BAI-SFX should be a selectable electron-transporting material for eco-friendly organic semiconductors.

Abstract
The use of ammonium halide salts as metal hydride precursors in a new Pd-catalyzed cycloisomerization of 1,6-diynes, which affords unexplored silylated 2-azafluorenes, is reported. This cascade process includes the addition of a Pd-hydride species to a π-system, intramolecular carbopalladation, and C(sp2)-H bond activation. A variety of functional groups are tolerated, and the synthetic utility of the resulting products has been demonstrated by a series of derivatizations.

Abstract
Aromatic skeletons are generally regarded as being uncleavable because of their aromatic stabilization energy. Compared to exocyclic functionalizations of aromatic compounds, much less attention has been paid to substitutions of endocyclic atoms in aromatic cores through partial disassembly of the cyclic skeletons and subsequent ring reconstruction. In this Feature Article, we describe our endeavours to establish "aromatic metamorphosis", where general aromatic compounds such as dibenzothiophenes, dibenzofurans, and benzofurans are transformed into different ring systems using a multi-step strategy or ideally in one step.

Abstract
Rational molecular design for the organic nanocrystal morphology still remains a challenge due to the structural diversity and complicated weak intermolecular interactions. In this work, a typical attractor-repulsor molecule N,N-diphenyl-4-(9-phenyl-fluoren-9-yl) phenylamine (TPA-PF) is designed to explore a general assembly strategy for 2D nanocrystals. Via an interdigital lipid bilayer-like (ILB) molecular packing mode, large-sized lamellar 2D nanosheets are obtained with a length:width:thickness ratio as ≈2500:1000:1. The d-spacing of the largest (001) plane is 1.32 nm, which equals to the thickness of a single interdigital stacking layer. The synergetic effect of the attractive supramolecular segment (TPA) and the repulsive bulky group (PF) is supposed to be the critical factor for the ILB packing that leads to the 2D structures. The attractor-repulsor molecule design is expected to be an effective strategy for the growth of 2D nanocrystals based on small organic molecules.

Abstract
Treatment of dibenzothiophene dioxides with cyclic diarylmethanes in the presence of KN(SiMe3)2 results in the formation of fluorene-based spirocyclic tetraarylmethanes in a single operation. The transformation would proceed via an intermolecular SNAr reaction of the dioxides with cyclic diarylmethylpotassium followed by intramolecular SNAr cyclization. This straightforward strategy provides a wide range of spirocyclic diarylfluorenes including unusual ones that are otherwise difficult to synthesize.
