Markovnikov Hydrochlorination of Unactivated Alkenes with FeCl3 via a HAT/XAT Sequence

Hydrochlorination of alkenes is a practical strategy for accessing organic chlorides. Herein, we report the hydrochlorination of unactivated alkenes via a hydrogen atom transfer/halogen atom transfer process using earth-abundant and biocompatible FeCl3 as a chlorine source under extraordinarily mild reaction conditions. The protocol is easy to operate with notable features such as excellent chemoselectivity, remarkable efficiency, a broad substrate scope, and good functional group tolerance. Importantly, the synthetic utility is highlighted by scaled-up reactions, late-stage derivatizations of products, and the modification of sulfonamides.

Three-Component Tandem Amidosulfenylation of Alkenes for the Synthesis of β-Succinimide Sulfides

An environmentally benign multicomponent strategy for the amidosulfenylation of alkenes for the synthesis of β-succinimide sulfides is disclosed. In this process, common disulfides smoothly act as a sulfur-based source, and N-iodosuccinimide (NIS) is used not only as a free radical initiator but also as an N-nucleophile. A broad range of functional groups are tolerated in this reaction system.

Fe-catalyzed hydroxytrifluoromethylation of α-(trifluoromethyl)styrenes with CF3SO2Na: facile access to α,β-bistrifluoromethyl tertiary alcohols

A mild and practical Fe-catalyzed hydroxytrifluoromethylation of α-(trifluoromethyl)styrenes with CF₃SO₂Na in the presence of K₂S₂O₈ and air was developed. The reaction proceeded efficiently at room temperature without β-fluoride elimination and afforded the corresponding α,β-bistrifluoromethyl tertiary alcohols in good to excellent yields.

Recent Advances on the Halo- and Cyano-Trifluoromethylation of Alkenes and Alkynes

Incorporation of fluorine into organic molecules is a well-established strategy in the design of advanced materials, agrochemicals, and pharmaceuticals. Among numerous modern synthetic approaches, functionalization of unsaturated bonds with simultaneous addition of trifluoromethyl group along with other substituents is currently one of the most attractive methods undergoing wide-ranging development. In this review article, we discuss the most significant contributions made in this area during the last decade (2012−2021). The reactions reviewed in this work include chloro-, bromo-, iodo-, fluoro- and cyano-trifluoromethylation of alkenes and alkynes.

Vicinal halo-trifluoromethylation of alkenes

Both trifluoromethyl and halide groups are widely found in medicinally and pharmaceutically important compounds and, moreover, organohalides are commonly used as versatile intermediates in synthetic organic chemistry. Due to their prevalence and easy accessibility, alkene halo-trifluoromethylation provides a convenient way to install these valuable functionalities in complex targets. In this review, we summarize recent advances and achievements in this fast-growing research field. For clarity, the reactions were classified according to the type of halogen atom.

Electrochemical vicinal aminotrifluoromethylation of alkenes: high regioselective acquisition of β-trifluoromethylamines

A high-regioselective electrochemical aminotrifluoromethylation of alkenes leading to β-trifluoromethylamines using CF₃SO₂Na as a trifluoromethyl precursor and acetonitrile as an N-nucleophile was achieved.

Synthesis of CF3CH2-Containing Indolines by Transition-Metal-Free Aryltrifluoromethylation of Unactivated Alkenes

With an unactivated double bond as the radical acceptor, allyl amines underwent a metal-free trifluoromethylation/cyclization cascade with CF₃SO₂Na (Langlois' reagent), affording CF₃CH₂-containing indolines and tetrahydroisoquinolines, whose practical syntheses are significant challenges. This protocol features mild conditions, low cost, and a broad substrate scope.

Copper(i) reagent-promoted hydroxytrifluoromethylation of enamides: flexible synthesis of substituted-3-hydroxy-2-aryl-3-(2,2,2-trifluoro-1-arylethyl)isoindolin-1-one

A novel CuBr-catalyzed hydroxytrifluoromethylation reaction was investigated. Substituted 3-benzylidene-2-arylisoindolin-1-ones were reacted with sodium trifluoromethanesulfinate to afford substituted-3-hydroxy-2-aryl-3-(2,2,2-trifluoro-1-arylethyl)isoindolin-1-one.
