Soluble, Antibaterial, and Anticorrosion Studies of Sulfonated Polystyrene/Polyaniline/Silver Nanocomposites Prepared with the Sulfonated Polystyrene Template

Physicochemical characterization and potential cancer therapy applications of hydrogel beads loaded with doxorubicin and GaOOH nanoparticles

A new type of hybrid polymer particles capable of carrying the cytostatic drug doxorubicin and labeled with a gallium compound was prepared. These microparticles consist of a core and a hydrogel shell, which serves as the structural matrix. The shell can be employed to immobilize gallium oxide hydroxide (GaOOH) nanoparticles and the drug, resulting in hybrid beads with sizes of approximately 3.81 ± 0.09 μm. The microparticles exhibit the ability to incorporate a remarkably large amount of doxorubicin, approximately 0.96 mg per 1 mg of the polymeric carrier. Additionally, GaOOH nanoparticles can be deposited within the hydrogel layer at an amount of 0.64 mg per 1 mg of the carrier. These nanoparticles, resembling rice grains with an average size of 593 nm by 155 nm, are located on the surface of the polymer carrier. In vitro studies on breast and colon cancer cell lines revealed a pronounced cytotoxic effect of the hybrid polymer particles loaded with doxorubicin, indicating their potential for cancer therapies. Furthermore, investigations on doping the hybrid particles with the Ga-68 radioisotope demonstrated their potential application in positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. The proposed structures present a promising theranostic platform, where particles could be employed in anticancer therapies while monitoring their accumulation in the body using PET.

Graphitic Carbon Nitride Enters the Scene: A Promising Versatile Tool for Biomedical Applications

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), since the pioneering work on visible-light photocatalytic water splitting in 2009, has emerged as a highly promising advanced material for environmental and energetic applications, including photocatalytic degradation of pollutants, photocatalytic hydrogen generation, and carbon dioxide reduction. Due to its distinctive two-dimensional structure, excellent chemical stability, and distinctive optical and electrical properties, g-C3N4 has garnered a considerable amount of interest in the field of biomedicine in recent years. This review focuses on the fundamental properties of g-C3N4, highlighting the synthesis and modification strategies associated with the interfacial structures of g-C3N4-based materials, including heterojunction, band gap engineering, doping, and nanocomposite hybridization. Furthermore, the biomedical applications of these materials in various domains, including biosensors, antimicrobial applications, and photocatalytic degradation of medical pollutants, are also described with the objective of spotlighting the unique advantages of g-C3N4. A summary of the challenges faced and future prospects for the advancement of g-C3N4-based materials is presented, and it is hoped that this review will inspire readers to seek further new applications for this material in biomedical and other fields.

Biosynthesis, characterization and study of the application of silver nanoparticle for 4-nitrophenol reduction, and antimicrobial activities

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized from Vigna unguiculata (L) Walp extracted leaves, and characterized. The UV-Visible spectrum showed a peak between 411 and 415 nm at the Plasmon absorbance of the AgNPs. TEM showed that the size of AgNPs ranged from 5 to 13 nm. It was spherical with an average size of 11.08 nm. The size of AgNPs was 7 ± 6 nm and disperse in water. The AgNPs effectively reduced 4-Nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) in the presence of NaBH4. The AgNPs exhibited a strong antioxidant and antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacteria: Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Klebsiella pneumonia and Gram-positive: Bacillus pumilus and Staphylococcus aureus. The average zones of inhibition of AgNPs were: 29 mm for Staphylococcus aureus, 23 mm for Bacillus pumilus, 17 mm for Klebsiella pneumonia and 15 mm for Escherichia coli (E. coli). Thus, AgNPs has exhibted good antibacterial activity compared to antibiotics drug and 4-NP reduction.

TEMPO-Grafted Polystyrene/Polymethacrylate Organosiloxane Janus Nanohybrids as Efficient Pickering Interfacial Catalyst for Selective Aerobic Oxidation of Cinnamyl Alcohol

The novel 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) groups immobilized on functional polymers or nanoparticles emerged as potential Pickering interfacial catalysts (PICs) for effective catalysis in biphasic systems. In this study, a snowman-shaped Janus-structured polymer with TEMPO-anchored nanohybrid particles (SM-JPP-TEMPO) was prepared and employed as a potential PIC in the Anelli-Montanari system for the selective oxidation of alcohol. The amphiphilic character of SM-JPP-TEMPO particles plays a dual role as an emulsifier and catalyst in the Pickering emulsion. As a result, it enables smaller droplets (102 μm) at the water-in-oil (W/O) interface and reduces the interfacial tension from 26.58 to 17.38 mN/m, which improves the stability of the Pickering emulsion system. This constructed Pickering emulsion microreactor offers a larger interface contact area and shortens the mass transfer distance of the substrate of cinnamyl alcohol, which significantly enhances the catalytic conversion at the Anelli-Montanari oxidation system, thus achieving remarkable conversion efficiency of (92.3%) with excellent selectivity (99%) in static (stirring-free) condition. It was found that the Janus nanohybrid catalyst (SM-JPP-TEMPO) enhanced 1.29-fold catalytic efficiency compared to the TEMPO grafted spherical polystyrene nanoparticle (PS-NPs-TEMPO) catalyst (72%). Moreover, after seven consecutive cycles, the Janus nanocatalyst (SM-JPP-TEMPO) maintained the conversion significantly. Hence, these results collectively highlight that the amphiphilic SM-JPP-TEMPO catalyst provides an efficient and eco-friendly strategy for the intensification of liquid-liquid biphasic reaction systems for potential applications in industries.

Fabrication of Textile-Based Flexible Supercapacitor with a Textile Dye on Polyaniline-Based Composite Electrode for Enhanced Energy Storage

Polyaniline (PANI) is a promising conductive polymer for use in energy storage applications. Here, a one-step hydrothermal method of PANI polymerization on carbon felt electrode was synthesized using an azo dye, a bisulfonated dichloro anionic dye molecule to enhance an efficient textile-based flexible supercapacitor electrode material for energy storage applications. The electrode material synthesized at concentration of 2 mM AY17 exhibits 814.1 F g-1 at the scan rate of 5 mV s-1 with multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Due to electrostatic interaction with the polymer, the presence of high electronegativity Cl atoms in the dye molecule significantly improves the PANI structure's electron donor/acceptor properties. A symmetric supercapacitor exhibits an energy density of 11.7 W h kg−1 at a power density of 300 W kg−1, and it is 4.5 W h kg−1 at 1800 W kg−1 in 3.0 M KCl aqueous electrolyte. The capacitance retention performance value of the symmetric supercapacitor exhibited 81.76% after 2500 cycles.

Advanced Protective Films Based on Binary ZnO-NiO@polyaniline Nanocomposite for Acidic Chloride Steel Corrosion: An Integrated Study of Theoretical and Practical Investigations

Due to their thermal stability characteristics, polymer/composite materials have typically been employed as corrosion inhibitors in a variety of industries, including the maritime, oil, and engineering sectors. Herein, protective films based on binary ZnO-NiO@polyaniline (ZnNiO@PANE) nanocomposite were intended with a respectable yield. The produced nanocomposite was described using a variety of spectroscopic characterization methods, including dynamic light scattering (DLS), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) approaches, in addition to other physicochemical methods, including X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). By using open-circuit potentials (OCP) vs. time, electrochemical impedance spectroscopic (EIS), and potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) methods, the inhibitory effects of individual PANE and ZnNiO@PANE on the mild steel alloy corrosion in HCl/NaCl solution were assessed. The ZnNiO@PANE composite performed as mixed-type inhibitors, according to PDP findings. PANE polymer and ZnNiO@PANE composite at an optimal dose of 200 mg/L each produced protective abilities of 84.64% and 97.89%, respectively. The Langmuir isotherm model is used to explain the adsorption of ZnNiO@PANE onto MS alloy. DFT calculations showed that the prepared materials' efficiency accurately reflects their ability to contribute electrons, whereas Monte Carlo (MC) simulations showed that the suitability and extent of adsorption of the ZnNiO@PANE molecule at the metal interface determine the materials' corrosion protection process.

Research progress on preparation methods of water-soluble polyaniline

The application of polyaniline (PANI) in various fields is greatly limited by its poor solubility in water.Many methods which could elevate PANI water-soluble ability were used by researchers to expand its application range. In this paper, the research progress of the commonly used preparation methods of water-soluble PANI in recent years is reviewed. The main preparation methods of water-soluble PANI are categorized into four types including monomer modification, controlling the polymerization process, introducing water-soluble groups or substances, macromolecular reaction. They are composed of aniline derivative method, copolymerization, emulsion polymerization method, dispersion polymerization method, acid doping method, compound method, ATRP method. The principles of various methods to achieve water-solubility of PANI are introduced, the research on each preparation method reported before are introduced and their advantages and disadvantages are summarized.

Fe3O4/PPy-Coated Superhydrophilic Polymer Porous Foam: A Double Layered Photothermal Material with a Synergistic Light-to-Thermal Conversion Effect toward Desalination

Solar steam generation has been considered as one of the most promising strategies for production of fresh water using renewable solar energy. Herein, we prepared a polymer porous foam (HPSS) by a facile hydrothermal method. The HPSS presents a superhydrophilic wettability, an interpenetrating macroporous structure, and low thermal conductivity, which can well satisfy the criteria as an ideal candidate for photothermal materials. The HPSS/Fe₃O₄/PPy (polypyrrole) evaporator, of which a Fe₃O₄/PPy binary optical system served as a light absorption layer and HPSS was used as a porous substrate, was constructed through in situ growth of Fe₃O₄ particles followed by interfacial polymerization of PPy on the surface of HPSS. HPSS/Fe₃O₄/PPy shows an excellent light absorption capacity (92%) and photothermal conversion performance, with the solar energy conversion efficiency reaching up to 94.7% under 1 sun irradiation, which is much higher than that of HPSS/PPy (84.8%) composed of a unitary PPy light absorption layer. Interestingly, the presence of Fe₃O₄ particles could make directional migration in a magnetic field possible, thus facilitating its recovery as a self-floating solar generator in an open water area. Moreover, the HPSS/Fe₃O₄/PPy evaporator displays outstanding salt resistance properties and stability in various saline solutions, thus having great potential in practical desalination.

Sexual pheromone detection using PANI·Ag nanohybrid and PANI/PSS nanocomposite nanosensors

In this study, polyaniline/poly(styrene sulfonate) (PANI/PSS) nanocomposite and polyaniline·silver (PANI·Ag) nanohybrid thin films were obtained in cantilever nanosensors surface. The developed films were characterized in relation to topography, roughness, thickness, height, and structural properties. The topography study revealed that both films have a globular morphology, thickness and height in nanoscale. The gas sensing performance was investigated for sexual pheromone from the neotropical brown stink bug, Euschistus heros (F.). The sensitivities of both nanosensors based on PANI/PSS nanocomposite and PANI·Ag nanohybrid films were similar. The PANI·Ag nanohybrid nanosensor had a limit of detection of less than 3.1 ppq and limit of quantification of 10.05 ppq. The nanosensor layers were analyzed by UV-vis and FTIR showing the incorporation of Ag nanoparticles in the nanohybrid. We found that pheromone compound was adsorbed in sensing layer resulting in a reduction in the resonance frequency. The detection mechanism help us understand the good results of LOD, LOQ, sensitivity, selectivity and repeatability. The presented device has great potential for detection of the sexual pheromone from E. heros.

In situ fabrication of silver/polyimide composite films with enhanced heat dissipation

In this study, silver/polyimide (Ag/PI) composite films with enhanced heat dissipation properties were prepared. Ag was formed in situ by reducing AgNO₃ at various locations according to the reduction method. Two different types of soluble PIs capable of solution processing were used, namely Matrimid and hydroxy polyimide (HPI). Unlike Matrimid with bulky substituents, HPI with polar hydroxy groups formed ion-dipole interactions with Ag ions to form Ag particles with uniform size distribution. The location and distribution of Ag particles affect the heat emission characteristics of the composite films, resulting in better heat dissipation properties with the thermally and photochemically reduced Ag/HPI films having more Ag particles distributed inside of the films than the chemically reduced films.

Preparations, Properties, and Applications of Polyaniline and Polyaniline Thin Films-A Review

Polyaniline (PANI) is a famous conductive polymer, and it has received tremendous consideration from researchers in the field of nanotechnology for the improvement of sensors, optoelectronic devices, and photonic devices. PANI is doped easily by different acids and dopants because of its easy synthesis and remarkable environmental stability. This review focuses on different preparation processes of PANI thin film by chemical and physical methods. Several features of PANI thin films, such as their magnetic, redox, and antioxidant, anti-corrosion, and electrical and sensing properties, are discussed in this review. PANI is a highly conductive polymer. Given its unique properties, easy synthesis, low cost, and high environmental stability in various applications such as electronics, drugs, and anti-corrosion materials, it has attracted extensive attention. The most important PANI applications are briefly reviewed at the end of this review.

Size-Controlled and Super Long-Term Stable Lignin Nanospheres through a Facile Self-Assembly Strategy from Kraft Lignin

In diverse fields, much attention has been concentrated on the preparation of lignin nanospheres with various structures. Here we report a facile self-assembly strategy for preparing super long-term stable hollow and solid nanospheres based on lignin fractionation. We found that different lignins obtained at different pHs during fractionation can form nanospheres with different particle sizes and structures. The self-assembled and formation mechanisms of the nanospheres were surveyed by dynamic light scattering (DLS), elemental analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The analysis results showed that the phenolic hydroxyl groups and the intermolecular π-π interaction play a decisive effect in the formation of nanospheres. This study can not only facilitate the advance of lignin-based nanotechnologies but also provide a broad prospect for the use of black liquor.

Silver-decorated gel-shell nanobeads: physicochemical characterization and evaluation of antibacterial properties

We report on the synthesis of composite nanobeads with antibacterial properties. The particles consist of polystyrene cores that are surrounded by sulfonic gel shells with embedded silver nanoparticles. The nanocomposite beads are prepared by sulfonation of polystyrene particles followed by accumulation of silver ions in the shell layer and subsequent reduction with sodium borohydride. The resulting material has been characterized by electron microscopy, vibrational and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and several other experimental techniques. It was shown that sodium borohydride reduces silver ions embedded in the gel layer producing silver nanoparticles but also transforms a fraction of sulfonic groups in the polymer to moieties with sulfur in a lower oxidation state, likely thiols. It is hypothesized that the generated thiol groups are anchoring the nanoparticles in the gel shell of the nanobeads stabilizing the whole structure. The silver-decorated nanobeads appear to be a promising material with considerable antimicrobial activity and were tested against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. The determined minimum inhibitory (MIC) and minimum biofilm inhibitory (MBIC) concentrations are comparable to those of non-incorporated silver nanoparticles.

Ag-Based nanocomposites: synthesis and applications in catalysis

Ag-Based nanocomposites, including supported Ag nanocomposites and bimetallic Ag nanocomposites, have been intensively investigated as highly efficient catalysts because of their high activity and stability, easy preparation, low cost, and low toxicity. Herein, we systematically summarize and comprehensively evaluate versatile synthetic strategies for the preparation of Ag-based nanocomposites, and outline their recent advances in catalytic oxidation, catalytic reduction, photocatalysis and electrocatalysis. In addition, the challenges and prospects related to Ag-based nanocomposites for various catalytic applications are also discussed. In light of the most recent advances in Ag-based nanocomposites for catalysis applications, this review provides a comprehensive assessment on the material selection, synthesis and catalytic characteristics of these catalysts, which offers a strategic guide to build a close connection between Ag nanocomposites and catalysis applications.

Green Preparation of Straw Fiber Reinforced Hydrolyzed Soy Protein Isolate/Urea/Formaldehyde Composites for Biocomposite Flower Pots Application

The effects of soil burial on the biodegradation of biocomposite flower pots (BFP) made from straw fiber (SF) and hydrolyzed soy protein isolate/urea/formaldehyde (HSPI/U/F) copolymer resin were studied in detail. The microstructure, crystallinity, functional groups, mechanical, degradation and thermal property of the prepared SF with HSPI/U/F copolymer resin have been studied, and the degradation mechanism was also elucidated. XRD results showed that the bond breakage between SF and HSPI/U/F copolymer resin induced a decrease in relative degradation-resistant crystal structures. FTIR spectra showed that the methylolated HSPI units could form a cross-linking network with U/F and SF. The BFP degradation after soil burial was mainly attributed to the effects of microorganisms. The degradation products were environmentally friendly, because they were degradable and could fertilize the soil. In addition, the U/F adhesives were slightly degraded by the microorganisms due to the HSPI in the pots. The TG and DSC results showed that the molecular motion of the BFP matrix could be restricted by the degradation action and the content of HSPI, resulting in decreased crystallization enthalpy and showing good thermal property. The tensile strength of different reinforced samples was not significantly reduced in comparison to U/F resin, and still kept good mechanical performance. Thus, the prepared SF reinforced HSPI/U/F copolymer resins could have good potential for use in the field of biodegradable flower pots because of their good thermal property, mechanical property, biodegradability, and relatively low cost.
