A Photo‐Responsive Charge‐Assisted Hydrogen‐Bonded Organic Network with Ultra‐Stable Viologen Radicals

Construction of a stable radical hydrogen-bonded metal-organic framework with functionalized tetrathiafulvalene linkers

A stable two-dimensional radical hydrogen-bonded metal-organic framework, constructed using a modified tetrathiafulvalene-tetrabenzoate ((2-Me)-H4TTFTB) linker and Cd2+ ions, exhibits a high electrical conductivity of 4.1 × 10-4 S m-1 and excellent photothermal conversion with a temperature increase of 137 °C in 15 s under the irradiation of a 0.7 W cm-2 808 nm laser.

Hydrogen-Bonding Assembly Meets Anion Coordination Chemistry: Framework Shaping and Polarity Tuning for Xenon/Krypton Separation

Hybrid hydrogen-bonded (H-bonded) frameworks built from charged components or metallotectons offer diverse guest-framework interactions for target-specific separations. We present here a study to systematically explore the coordination chemistry of monovalent halide anions, i.e., F- , Cl- , Br- , and I- , with the aim to develop hybrid H-bond synthons that enable the controllable construction of microporous H-bonded frameworks exhibiting fine-tunable surface polarity within the adaptive cavities for realistic xenon/krypton (Xe/Kr) separation. The spherical halide anions, especially Cl- , Br- , and I- , are found to readily participate in the charge-assisted H-bonding assembly with well-defined coordination behaviors, resulting in robust frameworks bearing open halide anions within the distinctive 1D pore channels. The activated frameworks show preferential binding towards Xe (IAST Xe/Kr selectivity ca. 10.5) because of the enhanced polarizability and the pore confinement effect. Specifically, dynamic column Xe/Kr separation with a record-high separation factor (SF=7.0) among H-bonded frameworks was achieved, facilitating an efficient Xe/Kr separation in dilute, CO2 -containing gas streams exactly mimicking the off-gas of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) reprocessing.

A series of naphthalenediimide-based metal-organic frameworks: synthesis, photochromism and inkless and erasable printing

Three new three-dimensional metal-organic frameworks were synthesized based on a naphthalenediimide derivative ligand, all of which exhibit photochromic behaviour due to the presence of the naphthalenediimide core. Interestingly, two of them possess significant colour changes under light, excellent stability, and appropriate photochromic lifetimes, thus showing potential for application in inkless and erasable printing media.

Multistimuli-responsive materials based on a zinc(II) complex with high-contrast and multicolor switching

The development of stimulus-responsive luminescent materials, especially those based on a single compound exhibiting multicolor and high-contrast (Δλ_em ≥ 100 nm) chromic properties, is a critical challenge. In this work, we synthesized and characterized a zinc(II) complex (1). As expected, 1 displays aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) in THF/H₂O mixtures, and remarkable multicolor switching under external stimuli in the solid state. Complex 1 shows reversible mechanochromic luminescence behavior with a large wavelength shift (Δλ_em = 100 nm) during the grinding-fuming cycles, due to the phase transformation between the crystalline and amorphous states. More impressively, 1 exhibits obvious acidochromic properties (Δλ_em = 130 nm) which originate from the adsorption of vapor and a gas-solid reaction on the crystal surface. Furthermore, 1 exhibits electrochemical oxidation behavior accompanied by quenching of yellow-green emission due to the overlap of an emission band and an absorption band. The above-mentioned color changes under ambient light can also be observed by the naked eye during the mechanical, acid-base vapor and electrical stimulation. Based on the high-contrast and multicolor switching, complex 1 was successfully developed into test papers and films in the field of rapid detection of mechanical stimuli and HCl/NH₃ vapors.

Applications of Viologens in Organic and Inorganic Discoloration Materials

Viologen derived from 4,4'-bipyridine has attracted much attention because of its color changing properties with electron transfer, unique redox stability and structural diversity. These characteristics have led to its successful use in various applications, in particular in color-changing materials. In the past few years, researchers have been working on the syntheses of viologen-based color-changing functional materials, and such materials have been widely used in many fields. In photochromic materials, it is used as anti-counterfeiting material; in thermochromic, it is used as memory storage material, and in electrochromic, it is used as a battery material. This Review discusses the progress of viologen in organic and inorganic discoloration materials in recent years. The syntheses of viologen and its derivatives are summarized, and its application in the field of discoloration materials is introduced.
