The Current Understanding of Mechanistic Pathways in Zeolite Crystallization

Zeolite catalysts and adsorbents have been an integral part of many commercial processes and are projected to play a significant role in emerging technologies to address the changing energy and environmental landscapes. The ability to rationally design zeolites with tailored properties relies on a fundamental understanding of crystallization pathways to strategically manipulate processes of nucleation and growth. The complexity of zeolite growth media engenders a diversity of crystallization mechanisms that can manifest at different synthesis stages. In this review, we discuss the current understanding of classical and nonclassical pathways associated with the formation of (alumino)silicate zeolites. We begin with a brief overview of zeolite history and seminal advancements, followed by a comprehensive discussion of different classes of zeolite precursors with respect to their methods of assembly and physicochemical properties. The following two sections provide detailed discussions of nucleation and growth pathways wherein we emphasize general trends and highlight specific observations for select zeolite framework types. We then close with conclusions and future outlook to summarize key hypotheses, current knowledge gaps, and potential opportunities to guide zeolite synthesis toward a more exact science.

Review and perspectives on TS-1 catalyzed propylene epoxidation

Titanium silicate zeolite (TS-1) is widely used in the research on selective oxidations of organic substrates by H2O2. Compared with the chlorohydrin process and the hydroperoxidation process, the TS-1 catalyzed hydroperoxide epoxidation of propylene oxide (HPPO) has advantages in terms of by-products and environmental friendliness. This article reviews the latest progress in propylene epoxidation catalyzed by TS-1, including the HPPO process and gas phase epoxidation. The preparation and modification of TS-1 for green and sustainable production are summarized, including the use of low-cost feedstocks, the development of synthetic routes, strategies to enhance mass transfer in TS-1 crystal and the enhancement of catalytic performance after modification. In particular, this article summarizes the catalytic mechanisms and advanced characterization techniques for propylene epoxidation in recent years. Finally, the present situation, development prospect and challenge of propylene epoxidation catalyzed by TS-1 were prospected.

Recent advances in metal-organic frameworks for stimuli-responsive drug delivery

After entering the human body, drugs for treating diseases, which are prone to delivery and release in an uncontrolled manner, are affected by various factors. Based on this, many researchers utilize various microenvironmental changes encountered during drug delivery to trigger drug release and have proposed stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems. In recent years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have become promising stimuli-responsive agents to release the loaded therapeutic agents at the target site to achieve more precise drug delivery due to their high drug loading, excellent biocompatibility, and high stimuli-responsiveness. The MOF-based stimuli-responsive systems can respond to various stimuli under pathological conditions at the site of the lesion, releasing the loaded therapeutic agent in a controlled manner, and improving the accuracy and safety of drug delivery. Due to the changes in different physical and chemical factors in the pathological process of diseases, the construction of stimuli-responsive systems based on MOFs has become a new direction in drug delivery and controlled release. Based on the background of the rapidly increasing attention to MOFs applied in drug delivery, we aim to review various MOF-based stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems and their response mechanisms to various stimuli. In addition, the current challenges and future perspectives of MOF-based stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems are also discussed in this review.

Zeolite Properties, Methods of Synthesis, and Selected Applications

Zeolites, a group of minerals with unique properties, have been known for more than 250 years. However, it was the development of methods for hydrothermal synthesis of zeolites and their large-scale industrial applications (oil processing, agriculture, production of detergents and building materials, water treatment processes, etc.) that made them one of the most important materials of the 20th century, with great practical and research significance. The orderly, homogeneous crystalline and porous structure of zeolites, their susceptibility to various modifications, and their useful physicochemical properties contribute to the continuous expansion of their practical applications in both large-volume processes (ion exchange, adsorption, separation of mixture components, catalysis) and specialized ones (sensors). The following review of the knowledge available in the literature on zeolites aims to present the most important information on the properties, synthesis methods, and selected applications of this group of aluminosilicates. Special attention is given to the use of zeolites in agriculture and environmental protection.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) to hydrocarbon fuels

MOF-based photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) using CO2 as an electron donor offers a green, clean, and extensible way to make hydrocarbon fuels under more tolerant conditions. Herein, basic principles of PEC reduction of CO2 and the preparation methods and characterization techniques of MOF-based materials are summarized. Furthermore, three applications of MOFs for improving the photoelectrocatalytic performance of CO2 reduction are described: (i) as photoelectrode alone; (ii) as a co-catalyst of semiconductor photoelectrode or as a substrate for loading dyes, quantum dots, and other co-catalysts; (iii) as one of the components of heterojunction structure. Challenges and future wave surrounding the development of robust PEC CO2 systems based on MOF materials are also discussed briefly.

A simple microwave-assisted synthesis of cobalt ferrite nanoparticles and its application for the determination of lead ions in rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) tea

In this study, a magnetic sorbent assisted dispersive solid phase extraction (DSPE) method was used to preconcentrate lead ions from rooibos tea samples for determination by slotted quartz tube-flame atomic absorption spectrometry (SQT-FAAS). Cobalt ferrite magnetic nanoparticles (CoFe2O4 MNPs) were synthesized by microwave assisted digestion. Limits of detection and quantification were calculated as 5.3 and 17.6 µg/L, respectively, in a linear dynamic range of 20-800 µg/L. The enhancement factor of the developed method was found to be 80-folds when compared to the detection limit of the regular FAAS system. The percent recoveries obtained for rooibos tea samples spiked at different concentrations were in the range of 77 - 125%, with high repeatability as indicated by low standard deviations. The findings of the study demonstrated that the CoFe2O4 MNPs-based extraction method is a straightforward, fast, affordable, safe, and eco-friendly approach to qualifying/quantifying lead with high precision in the selected beverage sample.

Investigating the role of microwave thermal and non-thermal effects on WO3-graphene oxide composite synthesis

The effects of microwave-assisted synthesis on the morphology and crystalline structure of WO3-graphene oxide (GO) composites have been investigated. Using two different microwave reactors, evidence supports that thermal and non-thermal effects significantly influence the properties of the synthesized materials. The findings reveal that the microwave cavity geometry affects how the microwaves are "delivered" to the reactional cavity as a function of time; it also orientates the growth process of the WO3 particles. Consequently, the crystalline structure and morphology are affected. As a result, the WO3-GO composites produced using a CEM reactor exhibit a rounded shape and hexagonal phase of WO3, besides enhanced reduction of GO. Whereas the composites made using an Anton-Paar reactor are composed of sheets and flowers of WO3 with hexagonal, triclinic and/or WO3 hydrate structures and cause a lower reduction on the GO.

Rapid Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of ZnIn2S4 Nanosheets for Highly Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

In this study, a facile and rapid microwave-assisted synthesis method was used to synthesize In₂S₃ nanosheets, ZnS nanosheets, and ZnIn₂S₄ nanosheets with sulfur vacancies. The two-dimensional semiconductor photocatalysts of ZnIn₂S₄ nanosheets were characterized by XRD, FESEM, BET, TEM, XPS, UV-vis diffuse reflectance, and PL spectroscopy. The ZnIn₂S₄ with sulfur vacancies exhibited an evident energy bandgap value of 2.82 eV, as determined by UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and its energy band diagram was obtained through the combination of XPS and energy bandgap values. ZnIn₂S₄ nanosheets exhibited about 33.3 and 16.6 times higher photocatalytic hydrogen production than In₂S₃ nanosheets and ZnS nanosheets, respectively, under visible-light irradiation. Various factors, including materials, sacrificial reagents, and pH values, were used to evaluate the influence of ZnIn₂S₄ nanosheets on photocatalytic hydrogen production. In addition, the ZnIn₂S₄ nanosheets revealed the highest photocatalytic hydrogen production from seawater, which was about 209.4 and 106.7 times higher than that of In₂S₃ nanosheets and ZnS nanosheets, respectively. The presence of sulfur vacancies in ZnIn₂S₄ nanosheets offers promising opportunities for developing highly efficient and stable photocatalysts for photocatalytic hydrogen production from seawater under visible-light irradiation.

Metal-organic framework-based nanomaterials as opto-electrochemical sensors for the detection of antibiotics and hormones: A review

Increasing trace levels of antibiotics and hormones in the environment and food samples are concerning and pose a threat. Opto-electrochemical sensors have received attention due to their low cost, portability, sensitivity, analytical performance, and ease of deployment in the field as compared to conventional expensive technologies that are time-consuming and require experienced professionals. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with variable porosity, active functional sites, and fluorescence capacity are attractive materials for developing opto-electrochemical sensors. Herein, the insights into the capabilities of electrochemical and luminescent MOF sensors for detection and monitoring of antibiotics and hormones from various samples are critically reviewed. The detailed sensing mechanisms and detection limits of MOF sensors are addressed. The challenges, recent advances, and future directions for the development of stable, high-performance MOFs as commercially viable next-generation opto-electrochemical sensor materials for the detection and monitoring of diverse analytes are discussed.

Recent Studies on the Application of Microwave-Assisted Method for the Preparation of Heterogeneous Catalysts and Catalytic Hydrogenation Processes

Currently, microwave radiation is widely used in various chemical processes in order to intensify them and carry out processes within the framework of "green" chemistry approaches. In the last 10 years, there has been a significant increase in the number of scientific publications on the application of microwaves in catalytic reactions and synthesis of nanomaterials. It is known that heterogeneous catalysts obtained under microwave activation conditions have many advantages, such as improved catalytic characteristics and stability, and the synthesis of nanomaterials is accelerated several times compared to traditional methods used to produce catalysts. The present review article is to summarize the results of modern research on the use of microwave radiation for the synthesis of heterogeneous catalytic nanomaterials and discusses the prospects for research in the field of microwave-induced liquid-phase heterogeneous catalysis in hydrogenation.

Recent advances in adsorption of environmental pollutants using metal-organic frameworks-based hydrogels

Water pollution is increasing significantly owing to industrialization and population growth that lead to serious environmental and health issues. Therefore, the design and development of more effective wastewater treatment approaches are necessary due to a significant upsurge in demand for freshwater. More recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted attention in environmental science owing to their tunable porosity, unique structure, flexibility, and various composition. Despite these attractive advantages, some drawbacks, including intrinsic fragility, unsatisfied processability, dust formation, and poor reusability, have greatly limited their applications. Therefore, MOFs are often designed as supported-based MOFs (e.g., MOFs-coated composites) or 3D structured composites, such as MOFs-based hydrogels. MOFs-based hydrogels are excellent candidates in the sorption process because of their appropriate adsorption capacity, porous structure, good mechanical properties, durability as well as biodegradable features. In this review, the removal of different pollutants (e.g., synthetic dyes, phosphates, heavy metals, antibiotics, and some organic compounds) from aqueous media has been studied by the adsorption process using MOFs-based hydrogels. The important advancements in the fabrication of MOFs-based hydrogels and their capacities in the adsorption of pollutants under experimental conditions have been discussed. Finally, problems and future perspectives on the adsorption process using MOFs-based hydrogels have been investigated.

Green and Fast Strategies for Energy-Efficient Preparation of the Covalent Organic Framework TpPa-1

Three synthesis procedures for the covalent-organic framework (COF) TpPa-1 are studied with the purpose of setting up the most promising one in a fast and green way, leading to a more environmentally friendly and sustainable process. With conventional heating, good crystallinity and a high BET specific surface area (SSA) of up to 1007 m²  ⋅ g^-1 are achieved at 170 °C for 3 days using water as the quintessential green solvent. However, the application of microwave radiation in the synthesis for this crystalline porous polymer allows reaction times to be shortened to 30 min while maintaining structural and textural properties (BET SSA of 928 m²  ⋅ g^-1 ) and obtaining yields close to 98 % (vs. 90 % in the hydrothermal synthesis). The water-assisted mechanochemical synthesis is also an environmentally friendly synthetic approach; with heating at 170 °C in a two-step process (10+10 min), high crystallinity is achieved, a BET SSA of 960  m²  ⋅ g^-1 and a yield of 98 % for TpPa-1.

Surface Plasmon Resonance Induced Photocatalysis in 2D/2D Graphene/g-C3N4 Heterostructure for Enhanced Degradation of Amine-Based Pharmaceuticals under Solar Light Illumination

Pharmaceuticals, especially amine-based pharmaceuticals, such as nizatidine and ranitidine, contaminate water and resist water treatment. Here, different amounts of graphene sheets are coupled with g-C3N4 nanosheets (wt% ratio of 0.5, 1, 3 and 5 wt% of graphene) to verify the effect of surface plasmon resonance introduced to the g-C3N4 material. The synthesized materials were systematically examined by advanced analytical techniques. The prepared photocatalysts were used for the degradation of amine-based pharmaceuticals (nizatidine and ranitidine). The results show that by introducing only 3 wt% graphene to g-C3N4, the absorption ability in the visible and near-infrared regions dramatically enhanced. The absorption in the visible range was 50 times higher when compared to the pure sample. These absorption features suggest that the surfaces of the carbon nitride sheet are covered by the graphene nanosheet, which would effectively apply the LSPR properties for catalytic determinations. The enhancement in visible light absorption in the composite was confirmed by PL analysis, which showed greater inhibition of the electron-hole recombination process. The XRD showed a decrease in the (002) plan due to the presence of graphene, which prevents further stacking of carbon nitride layers. Accordingly, the Gr/g-C3N4 composite samples exhibited an enhancement in the photocatalytic performance, specifically for the 5% Gr/g-C3N4 sample, and close to 85% degradation was achieved within 20 min under solar irradiation. Therefore, applying the Gr/g-C3N4 for the degradation of a pharmaceutical can be taken into consideration as an alternative method for the removal of such pollutants during the water treatment process. This enhancement can be attributed to surface plasmon resonance-induced photocatalysis in a 2D/2D graphene/g-C3N4 heterostructure.

Ultrasound and Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Hexagonally Ordered Ce-Promoted Mesoporous Silica as Ni Supports for Ethanol Steam Reforming

Solvothermal synthesis of mesoporous materials based on amphiphilic molecules as structure-directing agents can be enhanced using non-conventional technologies for stirring and thermal activation. Here, we disclose a green synthesis approach for the preparation of cerium-modified hexagonally ordered silica sieves. Ultrasound micromixing enabled us to obtain well-dispersed Ce in the self-assembled silica network and yielded ordered materials with high cerium content (Ce/Si molar ratio = 0.08). Microwave dielectric heating, applied by an innovative open-end coaxial antenna, was used to reduce the overall hydrothermal synthesis time and to improve the surface area and textural properties. These mesoporous materials were used as a Ni catalyst support (10 wt.% metal loading) for the ethanol steam reforming reaction. The new catalysts featured complete ethanol conversion, high H₂ selectivity (65%) and better stability, compared to the same catalyst prepared with magnetic stirring and conventional heating. The Ce-promoted silica sieves offered a suitable support for the controlled growth of nanocarbon that does not result in catalyst deactivation or poisoning after 6 h on stream.

A review on the synthesis of metal oxide nanomaterials by microwave induced solution combustion

With the increasing awareness of environmental protection and health, the preparation of metal oxide nanomaterials by environmentally friendly methods is favored by more and more researchers both at home and abroad. The preparation of metal oxide nanomaterials by a microwave-induced solution combustion synthesis method can significantly reduce the reaction time, energy consumption, and the use of toxic chemicals, which is an energy-saving, environmentally friendly method for nanomaterials synthesis. In addition, the microwave-induced solution combustion synthesis (MISCS) method has many advantages such as fast reaction speed, high selectivity, small product size, and homogeneous composition. This paper briefly describes the mechanism of the MISCS and its advantages in the synthesis of metal oxide nanomaterials, the related studies on microwave-induced solution combustion synthesis of metal oxide nanomaterials, and the effects of process parameters on the microstructure and properties of metal oxide nanomaterials synthesized by MISCS. Furthermore, some technical difficulties facing the synthesis of metal oxide nanomaterials by MISCS are summarized, and the future direction has also been prospected.

Effects of Acid Modulators on the Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Cr/Sn Metal-Organic Frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted remarkable attention for their distinguished structural designability. Precisely controlling the particle size and improving the structural stability of MOF nanoparticles influence their catalytic activity significantly. In this study, six acids (nitric, hydrochloric, formic, acetic, succinic, and citric acids) were used as modulators to prepare bimetallic MIL-101 (Cr, Sn) (MIL stands for Materials of Institut Lavoisier) via a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. Changes in volumetric, structural, stability, and catalytic properties, size, and shape of MIL-101 (Cr, Sn) were examined using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and N2 adsorption–desorption measurements. All modulators altered the MOF properties. Compared with other samples, acetic acid as a modulator mildly altered the MOF morphology by narrowing their particle size distribution, enhancing the specific surface area, and significantly improving their water and thermal stabilities. The addition of acetic acid was suitable for the catalytic conversion of glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), achieving a 43.1% 5-HMF yield with 91.4% glucose conversion in a mixed solution of γ-valerolactone and saturated salt water at 150 °C after 30 min.

The Chemistry and Applications of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) as Industrial Enzyme Immobilization Systems

Enzymatic biocatalysis is a sustainable technology. Enzymes are versatile and highly efficient biocatalysts, and have been widely employed due to their biodegradable nature. However, because the three-dimensional structure of these enzymes is predominantly maintained by weaker non-covalent interactions, external conditions, such as temperature and pH variations, as well as the presence of chemical compounds, can modify or even neutralize their biological activity. The enablement of this category of processes is the result of the several advances in the areas of molecular biology and biotechnology achieved over the past two decades. In this scenario, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are highlighted as efficient supports for enzyme immobilization. They can be used to ‘house’ a specific enzyme, providing it with protection from environmental influences. This review discusses MOFs as structures; emphasizes their synthesis strategies, properties, and applications; explores the existing methods of using immobilization processes of various enzymes; and lists their possible chemical modifications and combinations with other compounds to formulate the ideal supports for a given application.

Synthesis of Bioactive Yttrium-Metal-Organic Framework as Efficient Nanocatalyst in Synthesis of Novel Pyrazolopyranopyrimidine Derivatives and Evaluation of Anticancer Activity

Novel Yttrium-metal-organic framework (Y-MOF) was synthesized under optimal conditions of microwave with a power of 20 W, the temperature of 30 degrees of centigrade, and time duration of 10 min. The products were characterized by SEM (morphology and size distribution), TGA (thermal stability), BET technique (surface area), and FTIR (characterization of the related group). The Yttrium-metal-organic framework (Y-MOF) synthesized in this study, after identifying and confirming the structure, was used as an efficient and recyclable catalyst in the synthesis of new pyrazolopyranopyrimidine derivatives. Following the study of the properties and applications of Y-MOF, its anticancer properties on breast cancer cells based on the MTT method were evaluated, and significant results were observed. In addition, the anticancer properties of the pyrazolopyranopyrimidine derivatives were investigated.

State of the art on the ultrasonic-assisted removal of environmental pollutants using metal-organic frameworks

The environmental and health issues of drinking water and effluents released into nature are among the major area of contention in the past few decades. With the growth of ultrasound-based approaches in water and wastewater treatment, promising materials have also been considered to employ their advantages. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are among the porous materials that have received great attention from researchers in recent years. Features such as high porosity, large specific surface area, electronic properties like semi-conductivity, and the capacity to coordinate with the organic matter have resulted in a substantial increase in scientific researches. This work deals with a comprehensive review of the application of MOFs for ultrasonic-assisted pollutant removal from wastewater. In this regard, after considering features and synthesis methods of MOFs, the mechanisms of several ultrasound-based approaches including sonocatalysis, sonophotocatalysis, and sono-adsorption are well assessed for removal of different organic compounds by MOFs. These methods are compared with some other water treatment processes with the application of MOFs in the absence of ultrasound. Also, the main concern about MOFs including environmental hazards and water stability is fully discussed and some techniques are proposed to reduce hazardous effects of MOFs and improve stability in humid/aqueous environments. Economic aspects for the preparation of MOFs are evaluated and cost estimates for ultrasonic-assisted AOP approaches were provided. Finally, the future outlooks and the new frontiers of ultrasonic-assisted methods with the help of MOFs in global environmental pollutant removal are presented.

Zeolites and Related Materials as Catalyst Supports for Hydrocarbon Oxidation Reactions

Catalytic oxidation is a key technology for the conversion of petroleum-based feedstocks into useful chemicals (e.g., adipic acid, caprolactam, glycols, acrylates, and vinyl acetate) since this chemical transformation is always involved in synthesis processes. Millions of tons of these compounds are annually produced worldwide and find applications in all areas of chemical industries, ranging from pharmaceutical to large-scale commodities. The traditional industrial methods to produce large amounts of those compounds involve over-stoichiometric quantities of toxic inorganic reactants and homogeneous catalysts that operate at high temperature, originating large amounts of effluents, often leading to expensive downstream processes, along with nonrecovery of valuable catalysts that are loss within the reactant effluent. Due to the increasingly stringent environmental legislation nowadays, there is considerable pressure to replace these antiquate technologies, focusing on heterogeneous catalysts that can operate under mild reactions conditions, easily recovered, and reused. Parallelly, recent advances in the synthesis and characterization of metal complexes and metal clusters on support surfaces have brought new insights to catalysis and highlight ways to systematic catalysts design. This review aims to provide a comprehensive bibliographic examination over the last 10 years on the development of heterogeneous catalysts, i.e., organometallic complexes or metal clusters immobilized in distinct inorganic supports such as zeolites, hierarchical zeolites, silicas, and clays. The methodologies used to prepare and/or modify the supports are critically reviewed, as well as the methods used for the immobilization of the active species. The applications of the heterogenized catalysts are presented, and some case-studies are discussed in detail.

Biomedical Applications of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Disease Diagnosis and Drug Delivery: A Review

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a novel class of porous hybrid organic-inorganic materials that have attracted increasing attention over the past decade. MOFs can be used in chemical engineering, materials science, and chemistry applications. Recently, these structures have been thoroughly studied as promising platforms for biomedical applications. Due to their unique physical and chemical properties, they are regarded as promising candidates for disease diagnosis and drug delivery. Their well-defined structure, high porosity, tunable frameworks, wide range of pore shapes, ultrahigh surface area, relatively low toxicity, and easy chemical functionalization have made them the focus of extensive research. This review highlights the up-to-date progress of MOFs as potential platforms for disease diagnosis and drug delivery for a wide range of diseases such as cancer, diabetes, neurological disorders, and ocular diseases. A brief description of the synthesis methods of MOFs is first presented. Various examples of MOF-based sensors and DDSs are introduced for the different diseases. Finally, the challenges and perspectives are discussed to provide context for the future development of MOFs as efficient platforms for disease diagnosis and drug delivery systems.

Advances in Microwave Synthesis of Nanoporous Materials

Usually, porous materials are synthesized by using conventional electric heating, which can be energy- and time-consuming. Microwave heating is commonly used in many households to quickly heat food. Microwave ovens can also be used as powerful devices in the synthesis of various porous materials. The microwave-assisted synthesis offers a simple, fast, efficient, and economic way to obtain many of the advanced nanomaterials. This review summarizes the recent achievements in the microwave-assisted synthesis of diverse groups of nanoporous materials including silicas, carbons, metal-organic frameworks, and metal oxides. Microwave-assisted methods afford highly porous materials with high specific surface areas (SSAs), e.g., activated carbons with SSA ≈3100 m² g^-1 , metal-organic frameworks with SSA ≈4200 m² g^-1 , covalent organic frameworks with SSA ≈2900 m² g^-1 , and metal oxides with relatively small SSA ≈300 m² g^-1 . These methods are also successfully implemented for the preparation of ordered mesoporous silicas and carbons as well as spherically shaped nanomaterials. Most of the nanoporous materials obtained under microwave irradiation show potential applications in gas adsorption, water treatment, catalysis, energy storage, and drug delivery, among others.

Covalent Organic Framework (COF)-Based Hybrids for Electrocatalysis: Recent Advances and Perspectives

Developing highly efficient electrocatalysts for renewable energy conversion and environment purification has long been a research priority in the past 15 years. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as a burgeoning family of organic materials internally connected by covalent bonds and have been explored as promising candidates in electrocatalysis. The reticular geometry of COFs can provide an excellent platform for precise incorporation of the active sites in the framework, and the fine-tuning hierarchical porous architectures can enable efficient accessibility of the active sites and mass transportation. Considerable advances are made in rational design and controllable fabrication of COF-based organic-inorganic hybrids, that containing organic frameworks and inorganic electroactive species to induce novel physicochemical properties, and take advantage of the synergistic effect for targeted electrocatalysis with the hybrid system. Branches of COF-based hybrids containing a diversity form of metals, metal compounds, as well as metal-free carbons have come to the fore as highly promising electrocatalysts. This review aims to provide a systematic and profound understanding of the design principles behind the COF-based hybrids for electrocatalysis applications. Particularly, the structure-activity relationship and the synergistic effects in the COF-based hybrid systems are discussed to shed some light on the future design of next-generation electrocatalysts.

Microwave-Enabled Size Control of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles on Reduced Graphene Oxide

Nanoparticle-functionalized 2D material networks are promising for a wide range of applications, but in situ formation of nanoparticles is commonly challenged by rapid growth. Here, we demonstrate controlled synthesis of small and dispersed iron oxide nanoparticles on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) networks through rapid localized heating with microwaves with low-cost iron nitrate as the precursor. The strong coupling of the microwave radiation with the rGO network rapidly heats the network locally to decompose the iron nitrate and generate iron oxide nanoparticles, while cessation of microwaves leads to rapid cooling to minimize crystal growth. Small changes in the microwave reaction time (<1 min) led to very large changes in the iron oxide morphology. The solid-state microwave syntheses produced narrower nanoparticle size distribution than conventional heating. These results illustrate the potential of solid-state microwave syntheses to control the nanoparticle size on 2D materials through rapid localized heating under the microwave process conditions, which should be extendable to a variety of transition metal oxide-rGO systems.

A Review: Photocatalysts Based on BiOCl and g-C3N4 for Water Purification

Many organic pollutants are discharged into the environment, which results in the frequent detection of organic pollutants in surface water and underground water. Some of the organic pollutants can stay for a long time in the environment due to their recalcitrance. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) can effectively treat the recalcitrant organic compounds in water. Photocatalysis as one of the AOPs has attracted a lot of interest. BiOCl and g-C3N4 are nice photocatalysts. However, their catalytic activity should be further improved for industrial utilization. The construction of heterojunction between the two different components is deemed as an efficient strategy for developing a highly efficient photocatalyst. As a typical type-II heterojunction, g-C3N4/BiOCl heterojunctions showed better photocatalytic performance. To date, the g-C3N4/BiOCl composites were mainly studied in the field of water purification. The photoactivity of the pristine catalysts was greatly enhanced by the combination of the two materials. However, three kinds of proposed mechanisms were used to explain the improvement of the g-C3N4/BiOCl heterojunctions. But few researchers tried to explain why there were three different scenarios employed to explain the charge transfer. According to the articles reviewed, no direct evidence could indicate whether the band structures of the heterojunctions based on BiOCl and g-C3N4 were changed. Therefore, many more studies are needed to reveal the truth. Having a clearer understanding of the mechanism is beneficial for researchers to construct more efficient photocatalysts. This article is trying to start a new direction of research to inspire more researchers to prepare highly effective photocatalysts.

Selective C–C Bond Cleavage in Diols and Lignin Models: High-Throughput Screening of Metal Oxide-Anchored Vanadium in Mesoporous Silica

The development of selective and robust heterogeneous oxidation catalysts is an enabling technology for conversion of biomass-derived platform chemicals. Vanadium active sites were incorporated into the structure of mesoporous silica via an ultra-fast, one-pot synthesis method based on microwave-assisted heating. In addition, Al/Ti/Zr/Ce anchoring ions were introduced in order to minimize vanadium leaching and better control its dispersion. The supported V-(Al/Ti/Zr/Ce)-MCM-41 composite materials were assessed as catalysts for aerobic C–C bond cleavage of simple models for lignin (1,2-diphenyl-2-methoxyethanol) and sugar-derived polyalcohols (meso-hydrobenzoin). The TiIV ions proved to be the best anchors to prevent V leaching, while AlIII and ZrIV ions were the best to improve selective conversion of the substrates. The active sites in these catalysts are shown to be 2D VOx layers stabilized on the anchors. In a screen of twelve solvents, weakly polar solvents like toluene were found to be most suitable for this reaction, as was environmentally friendly ethyl acetate. The above properties, together with the high selectivity for C–C bond cleavage, advocate for a heterogeneous catalytic pathway, intrinsically different from that reported previously for molecular oxovanadium (V) catalysts.

A review of the microwave-assisted synthesis of carbon nanomaterials, metal oxides/hydroxides and their composites for energy storage applications

Currently, nanomaterials are considered to be the backbone of modern civilization. Especially in the energy sector, nanomaterials (mainly, carbon- and metal oxide/hydroxide-based nanomaterials) have contributed significantly. Among the various green approaches for the synthesis of these nanomaterials, the microwave-assisted approach has attracted significant research interest worldwide. In this context, it is noteworthy to mention that because of their enhanced surface area, high conducting nature, and excellent electrical and electrochemical properties, carbon nanomaterials are being extensively utilized as efficient electrode materials for both supercapacitors and secondary batteries. In this review article, we briefly demonstrate the characteristics of microwave-synthesized nanomaterials for next-generation energy storage devices. Starting with the basics of microwave heating, herein, we illustrate the past and present status of microwave chemistry for energy-related applications, and finally present a brief outlook and concluding remarks. We hope that this review article will positively convey new insights for the microwave synthesis of nanomaterials for energy storage applications.

Advanced Inorganic Nitride Nanomaterials for Renewable Energy: A Mini Review of Synthesis Methods

Inorganic nitride nanomaterials have attracted widespread attention for applications in renewable energy due to novel electrochemical activities and high chemical stabilities. For different renewable energy applications, there are many possibilities and uncertainties about the optimal nitride phases and nanostructures, which further promotes the exploration of controllable preparation of nitride nanomaterials. Moreover, unlike conventional nitrides with bulk or ceramic structures, the synthesis of nitride nanomaterials needs more accurate control to guarantee the target nanostructure along with the phase purity, which make the whole synthesis still a challenge to achieve. In this mini review, we mainly summarize the synthesis methods for inorganic nitride nanomaterials, including chemistry vapor deposition, self-propagation high-temperature synthesis, solid state metathesis reactions, solvothermal synthesis, etc. From the perspective of nanostructure, several novel nitrides, with nanostructures like nanoporous, two-dimensional, defects, ternary structures, and quantum dots, are showing unique properties and getting extensive attentions, recently. Prospects of future research in design and synthesis of functional inorganic nitrides are also discussed.

Preparation and characterization of polyacrylic acid-hydroxyapatite nanocomposite by microwave-assisted synthesis method

Polyacrylic acid, polyalkenoic acids in general, form the liquid ionomer phase of glass ionomer cements, which are frequently used in root restorations in dentistry. It is possible to obtain these ionomers with a fast, energy-efficient, high reaction efficiency and a clean method with microwave irradiation method. In this study, polyacrylic acid and its composite with nano HAp have been synthesized by microwave (MW) irradiation. The two-process parameters that were tested are MW intensity and reaction time. The polymerization was carried out at 110 °C up to 40 min and yield over 92% was produced in 30 min. The average molar mass of PAA was found as 11960 Da using a high-resolution mass spectrometer (TOF-MS). On the other hand, hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanoparticles have been prepared via the sol-gel procedure using potassium dihydrogen phosphate and calcium nitrate tetrahydrate as the precursors for phosphorus and calcium, respectively. XRD, EDS analysis revealed that the particles contain calcium deficient hydroxyapatite (Ca_10-x(HPO₄)_x(PO₄)_6-x(OH)_2-x (HAp) crystals with beta-TCP phase. Morphological observation by SEM measurement proved that the crystal particles of the HAp are very regular and granular, and their size is 25-45 nm in the longitudinal section. These particles were used in composite preparation with PAA. The yield of the composite obtained by heating at 500 W, 30 min was found to be 90%. From the FTIR and ¹H-NMR results, it was observed that there was not only a physical but also an electrostatic interaction between HAp and PAA. The thermal behavior of PAA and its composite with nano HAp were determined by the thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The results showed that anhydride formation or decarboxylation occurred at a lower temperature, confirming the interaction between PAA and HAp. The polymerization rate is much faster with microwave heating than conventional heating. Microwave irradiation enables rapid energy transfer and high-energy efficiency, hence, a faster reaction rate.

Exploring the Effect of Iron Metal-Organic Framework Particles in Polylactic Acid Membranes for the Azeotropic Separation of Organic/Organic Mixtures by Pervaporation

A microporous carboxylate metal-organic framework MIL-100 Fe was prepared as submicron particles by microwave-assisted hydrothermal synthesis (Fe-MOF-MW). This product was explored, for the first time, for the preparation of polylactic acid (PLA) mixed matrix membranes. The produced MOF was characterised by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) as well as by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and nitrogen adsorption/desorption. The effect of different Fe-MOF-MW concentrations (0.1 and 0.5 wt%) on the membrane properties and performance were evaluated. These membranes were used in the pervaporation process for the separation of methanol/methyl tert-butyl-ether mixtures at the azeotropic point. The influence of the feed temperature and vacuum pressure on the membrane performance was evaluated and the results were compared with PLA pristine membranes. Moreover, the produced membranes have been characterised in terms of morphology, MOF dispersion in the polymeric membrane matrix, wettability, thickness, mechanical resistance and swelling propensity. The presence of Fe-MOF-MW was found to have a beneficial effect in improving the selectivity of mixed matrix membranes towards methanol at both concentrations. The highest selectivity was obtained for the PLA membranes embedded with 0.5 wt% of Fe-MOF-MW and tested at the temperature of 25 °C and vacuum pressure of 0.09 mbar.

Obsidian as a Raw Material for Eco-Friendly Synthesis of Magnetic Zeolites

A sample of rhyolitic obsidian (OS) was used as raw material for zeolite synthesis by long (4 days) and fast (2 h)-aging hydrothermal processes. Zeolite synthesis was also performed by a fast (2 h) sonication method. The products were analysed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) both immediately after and 3 years after their formation in order to determine the stability of synthetic materials according to the method used. The results confirm zeolitization of obsidian both by long-aging conventional hydrothermal heating and fast hydrothermal process. However, the data highlight the efficiency of direct ultrasound energy in achieving more stable zeolite crystals over time. These results carried out using a natural source, follow those already obtained using wastes and pure sources as raw materials thus providing a definitive validation of the different mechanisms controlling zeolite formation according to the process used. Moreover, the results confirm the effectiveness of ultrasonic energy in the formation of zeolites that are more stable over time. Due to the chemical composition of the obsidian precursor, all synthetic zeolites show good magnetic properties (i.e., saturation magnetization), in view to potential magnetic separation.
