Abstract
The excessive activation of glutamate in the brain is a factor in the development of vascular dementia. γ-Oryzanol is a natural compound that has been shown to enhance brain function, but more research is needed to determine its potential as a treatment for vascular dementia. This study investigated if γ-oryzanol can delay or improve glutamate neurotoxicity in an in vitro model of differentiated HT-22 cells and explored its neuroprotective mechanisms. The differentiated HT-22 cells were treated with 0.1 mmol/L glutamate for 24 h then given γ-oryzanol at appropriate concentrations or memantine (10 µmol/L) for another 24 h. Glutamate produced reactive oxygen species and depleted glutathione in the cells, which reduced their viability. Mitochondrial dysfunction was also observed, including the inhibition of mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I activity, the collapse of mitochondrial transmembrane potential, and the reduction of intracellular ATP levels in the HT-22 cells. Calcium influx triggered by glutamate subsequently activated type II calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase (CaMKII) in the HT-22 cells. The activation of CaMKII-ASK1-JNK MAP kinase cascade, decreased Bcl-2/Bax ratio, and increased Apaf-1-dependent caspase-9 activation were also observed due to glutamate induction, which were associated with increased DNA fragmentation. These events were attenuated when the cells were treated with γ-oryzanol (0.4 mmol/L) or the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist memantine. The results suggest that γ-oryzanol has potent neuroprotective properties against glutamate excitotoxicity in differentiated HT-22 cells. Therefore, γ-oryzanol could be a promising candidate for the development of therapies for glutamate excitotoxicity-associated neurodegenerative diseases, including vascular dementia.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) and AXL tyrosine kinase receptor are known to be involved in the SARS-CoV-2 entry of the host cell. Therefore, targeting ACE2 and AXL should be an effective strategy to inhibit virus entry into cells. However, developing agents that can simultaneously target ACE2 and AXL remains a formidable task. The natural compound quercetin has been shown to inhibit AXL expression. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this study, we employed PLGA nanoparticles to prepare nanoparticles encapsulated with quercetin, coated with ACE2-containing cell membranes, or encapsulated with quercetin and then coated with ACE-2-containing cell membranes. These nanoparticles were tested for their abilities to neutralize or inhibit viral infection. RESULTS Our data showed that nanoparticles encapsulated with quercetin and then coated with ACE2-containing cell membrane inhibited the expression of AXL without causing cytotoxic activity. Nanoparticles incorporated with both quercetin and ACE2-containing cell membrane were found to be able to neutralize pseudo virus infection and were more effective than free quercetin and nanoparticles encapsulated with quercetin at inhibition of pseudo virus and SARS-CoV-2 infection. CONCLUSIONS We have shown that the biomimetic nanoparticles incorporated with both ACE-2 membrane and quercetin showed the most antiviral activity and may be further explored for clinical application.

Abstract
Here, we report the complete genome sequence of Aminobacterium sp. strain MB27-C1, which was isolated from sewage sludge collected at the wastewater treatment plant of Sanming Steel Co. Ltd. in Fujian, China. The resulting genome of strain MB27-C1 is a single contig of 2,427,830 bp with 41.58% GC content.

Abstract
Acute cellular rejection (ACR) is a significant immune issue among recipients following liver transplantation. Although diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) is widely used for diagnosing liver disease, it has not yet been utilized for monitoring ACR in patients after liver transplantation. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of DWI in monitoring treatment response among recipients with ACR. This study enrolled 25 recipients with highly suspected ACR rejection, and all subjects underwent both biochemistry and DWI scans before and after treatment. A pathological biopsy was performed 4 to 24 h after the first MRI examination to confirm ACR and degree of rejection. All patients were followed up and underwent a repeated MRI scan when their liver function returned to the normal range. After data acquisition, the DWI data were post-processed to obtain the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) map on a voxel-by-voxel basis. Five regions of interest were identified on the liver parenchyma to measure the mean ADC values from each patient. Finally, the mean ADC values and biochemical markers were statistically compared between ACR and non-ACR groups. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was constructed to evaluate the performance of the ADC and biochemical data in detecting ACR, and correlation analysis was used to understand the relationship between the ADC values, biochemical markers, and the degree of rejection. The histopathologic results revealed that 20 recipients had ACR, including 10 mild, 9 moderate, and 1 severe rejection. The results demonstrated that the ACR patients had significantly lower hepatic ADC values than those in patients without ACR. After treatment, the hepatic ADC values in ACR patients significantly increased to levels similar to those in non-ACR patients with treatment. The ROC analysis showed that the sensitivity and specificity for detecting ACR were 80% and 95%, respectively. Furthermore, the correlation analysis revealed that the mean ADC value and alanine aminotransferase level had strong and moderate negative correlation with the degree of rejection, respectively (r = -0.72 and -0.47). The ADC values were useful for detecting hepatic ACR and monitoring treatment response after immunosuppressive therapy.

Abstract
The advancement of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) enables early detection of numerous disasters. Efforts have been made to automate the monitoring of data from UAVs, with machine learning methods recently attracting significant interest. These solutions often face challenges with high computational costs and energy usage. Conventionally, data from UAVs are processed using cloud computing, where they are sent to the cloud for analysis. However, this method might not meet the real-time needs of disaster relief scenarios. In contrast, edge computing provides real-time processing at the site but still struggles with computational and energy efficiency issues. To overcome these obstacles and enhance resource utilization, this paper presents a convolutional neural network (CNN) model with an early exit mechanism designed for fire detection in UAVs. This model is implemented using TSMC 40 nm CMOS technology, which aids in hardware acceleration. Notably, the neural network has a modest parameter count of 11.2 k. In the hardware computation part, the CNN circuit completes fire detection in approximately 230,000 cycles. Power-gating techniques are also used to turn off inactive memory, contributing to reduced power consumption. The experimental results show that this neural network reaches a maximum accuracy of 81.49% in the hardware implementation stage. After automatic layout and routing, the CNN hardware accelerator can operate at 300 MHz, consuming 117 mW of power.

Abstract
Osteoporosis is a common bone disease in aging populations, particularly in postmenopausal women. Anti-resorptive and anabolic drugs have been applied to prevent and cure osteoporosis and are linked with a variety of adverse effects. Antrodia cinnamomea extracts (ACE) are highly renowned for their anticancer, antioxidative, and anti-inflammatory properties. However, whether ACE-enriched anti-osteoporosis functions are largely unknown. In a preclinical animal model, we found that ovariectomy significantly decreased bone volume in the ovariectomized (OVX) rats. Administration of ACE antagonized OVX-induced bone loss. In addition, ACE reversed OVX-reduced biomechanical properties. The serum osteoclast marker also showed improvement in the ACE-treated group. In the cellular model, it was indicated that ACE inhibits RANKL-induced osteoclast formation. Taken together, ACE seems to be a hopeful candidate for the development of novel anti-osteoporosis treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We aimed to investigate whether 2-[18F]fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (2-[18F]FDG PET/CT) can aid in evaluating the risk of malignancy in ampullary tumors detected by endoscopy. MATERIALS AND METHODS This single-center retrospective cohort study analyzed 155 patients (79 male, 76 female; mean age, 65.7 ± 12.7 years) receiving 2-[18F]FDG PET/CT for endoscopy-detected ampullary tumors 5-87 days (median, 7 days) after the diagnostic endoscopy between June 2007 and December 2020. The final diagnosis was made based on histopathological findings. The PET imaging parameters were compared with clinical data and endoscopic features. A model to predict the risk of malignancy, based on PET, endoscopy, and clinical findings, was generated and validated using multivariable logistic regression analysis and an additional bootstrapping method. The final model was compared with standard endoscopy for the diagnosis of ampullary cancer using the DeLong test. RESULTS The mean tumor size was 17.1 ± 7.7 mm. Sixty-four (41.3%) tumors were benign, and 91 (58.7%) were malignant. Univariable analysis found that ampullary neoplasms with a blood-pool corrected peak standardized uptake value in early-phase scan (SUVe) ≥ 1.7 were more likely to be malignant (odds ratio [OR], 16.06; 95% confidence interval [CI], 7.13-36.18; P < 0.001). Multivariable analysis identified the presence of jaundice (adjusted OR [aOR], 4.89; 95% CI, 1.80-13.33; P = 0.002), malignant traits in endoscopy (aOR, 6.80; 95% CI, 2.41-19.20; P < 0.001), SUVe ≥ 1.7 in PET (aOR, 5.43; 95% CI, 2.00-14.72; P < 0.001), and PET-detected nodal disease (aOR, 5.03; 95% CI, 1.16-21.86; P = 0.041) as independent predictors of malignancy. The model combining these four factors predicted ampullary cancers better than endoscopic diagnosis alone (area under the curve [AUC] and 95% CI: 0.925 [0.874-0.956] vs. 0.815 [0.732-0.873], P < 0.001). The model demonstrated an AUC of 0.921 (95% CI, 0.816-0.967) in candidates for endoscopic papillectomy. CONCLUSION Adding 2-[18F]FDG PET/CT to endoscopy can improve the diagnosis of ampullary cancer and may help refine therapeutic decision-making, particularly when contemplating endoscopic papillectomy.

Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a well-known autoimmune disorder related with joint pain, joint swelling, cartilage and bone degradation as well as deformity. Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) is an endocrine factor of the FGF family primarily produced by osteocytes and osteoblasts, involves an essential effect in pathogenesis of RA. IL-1β is a vital proinflammatory factor in the development of RA. However, the role of FGF23 on IL-1β synthesis in RA has not been fully explored. Our analysis of database revealed higher levels of FGF23 and IL-1β in RA samples compared with healthy controls. High-throughput screening demonstrated that IL-1β is a potential candidate factor after FGF23 treatment in RA synovial fibroblasts (RASFs). FGF23 concentration dependently promotes IL-1β synthesis in RASFs. FGF23 enhances IL-1β expression by activating the PI3K, Akt, and NF-κB pathways. Our findings support the notion that FGF23 is a promising target in the remedy of RA.

Abstract
Introduction Glyphosate, a widely utilized herbicide globally, has been linked to various health issues, including cancer, birth abnormalities, and reproductive issues. Additionally, there is growing experimental support indicating potential harm to skeletal muscles. Despite this, the impact of glyphosate on human muscle health remains unclear. Methods We examined information gathered from the 2013-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which included 1466 adults aged 18 or older. Our primary aim was to investigate the relationship between glyphosate exposure and hand grip strength, as well as its influence on lean muscle mass. Results and discussion Our investigation uncovered a detrimental correlation between glyphosate exposure and all measures of grip strength, except for the second test of the first hand. Specifically, we observed a statistically significant adverse association between glyphosate exposure and combined grip strength, which is calculated as the sum of the highest readings from both hands (ß coefficient of -2.000, S.E. = 0.891, p = 0.040). We did not observe a significant correlation between glyphosate levels, lean muscle mass, and the likelihood of reaching maximum grip strength meeting sarcopenia criteria. Additionally, we observed an interaction between age and glyphosate, as well as between body mass index (BMI) and glyphosate, concerning the association with combined grip strength. In this comprehensive analysis of NHANES data, our study reveals a potential association between glyphosate exposure and hand grip strength in the adult population. Our findings suggest the need for deeper exploration into the health effects of glyphosate exposure and its impact on muscle strength, shedding light on possible public health concerns.

Abstract
Hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α) plays a pivotal role in the survival, metastasis, and response to treatment of solid tumors. Autophagy serves as a mechanism for tumor cells to eliminate misfolded proteins and damaged organelles, thus promoting invasiveness, metastasis, and resistance to treatment under hypoxic conditions. MicroRNA (miRNA) research underscores the significance of these non-coding molecules in regulating cancer-related protein synthesis across diverse contexts. However, there is limited reporting on miRNA-mediated gene expression studies, especially with respect to epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and autophagy in the context of hypoxic breast cancer. Our study reveals decreased levels of miRNA-622 (miR-622) and miRNA-30a (miR-30a) in invasive breast cancer cells compared to their non-invasive counterparts. Inducing miR-622 suppresses HIF-1α protein expression, subsequently activating miR-30a transcription. This cascade results in reduced invasiveness and migration of breast cancer cells by inhibiting EMT markers, such as Snail, Slug, and vimentin. Furthermore, miR-30a negatively regulates beclin 1, ATG5, and LC3-II and inhibits Akt protein phosphorylation. Consequently, this improves the sensitivity of invasive MDA-MB-231 cells to docetaxel treatment. In conclusion, our study highlights the therapeutic potential of inducing miR-622 to promote miR-30a expression and thus disrupt HIF-1α-associated EMT and autophagy pathways. This innovative strategy presents a promising approach to the treatment of aggressive breast cancer.

Abstract
Converting solar energy into hydrogen energy using conjugated polymers (CP) is a promising solution to the energy crisis. Improving water solubility plays one of the critical factors in enhancing the hydrogen evolution rate (HER) of CP photocatalysts. In this study, a novel concept of incorporating hydrophilic side chains to connect the backbones of CPs to improve their HER is proposed. This concept is realized through the polymerization of carbazole units bridged with octane, ethylene glycol, and penta-(ethylene glycol) to form three new side-chain-braided (SCB) CPs: PCz2S-OCt, PCz2S-EG, and PCz2S-PEG. Verified through transient absorption spectra, the enhanced capability of PCz2S-PEG for ultrafast electron transfer and reduced recombination effects has been demonstrated. Small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) analyses reveal that these three SCB-CPs form cross-linking networks with different mass fractal dimensions (f) in aqueous solution. With the lowest f value of 2.64 and improved water/polymer interfaces, PCz2S-PEG demonstrates the best HER, reaching up to 126.9 µmol h-1 in pure water-based photocatalytic solution. Moreover, PCz2S-PEG exhibits comparable performance in seawater-based photocatalytic solution under natural sunlight. In situ SAXS analysis further reveals nucleation-dominated generation of hydrogen nanoclusters with a size of ≈1.5 nm in the HER of PCz2S-PEG under light illumination.

Abstract
Because the human eye cannot visually detect the results of direct bilirubin test papers accurately and quantitatively, this study proposes four different highly collimated mini light-emitting diodes (HC mini-LEDs) as light sources for detection. First, different concentrations of bilirubin were oxidized to biliverdin by FeCl3 on the test paper, and pictures were obtained with a smartphone. Next, the red, green, and blue (RGB) channels of the pictures were separated to average grayscale values, and their linear relationship with the direct bilirubin concentration was analyzed to detect bilirubin on the test paper noninvasively and quantitatively. The experimental results showed that when green HC mini-LEDs were used as the light sources and image analysis was performed using the G channel, for a direct bilirubin concentration range of 0.1-2 mg/dL, the G channel determination coefficient (R2) reached 0.9523 and limit of detection was 0.459 mg/dL. The detection method proposed herein has advantages such as rapid analysis, noninvasive detection, and digitization according to RGB grayscale changes in the images of the detection test paper.

Abstract
We show-to our own surprise-that total electronic energies for a family of m × n rectangular graphene flakes can be very accurately represented by a simple function of the structural parameters m and n with errors not exceeding 1 kcal/mol. The energies of these flakes, usually referred to as multiple zigzag chains Z(m,n), are computed for m, n < 21 at their optimized geometries using the DFTB3 methodology. We have discovered that the structural parameters m and n (and their simple algebraic functions) provide a much better basis for the energy decomposition scheme than the various topological invariants usually used in this context. Most terms appearing in our energy decomposition scheme seem to have simple chemical interpretations. Our observation goes against the well-established knowledge stating that many-body energies are complicated functions of molecular parameters. Our observations might have far-reaching consequences for building accurate machine learning models.

Abstract
Symptomatic osteoporotic compression fractures are commonly addressed through vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty. However, cement leakage poses a significant risk of neurological damage. We introduced "aspiration percutaneous kyphoplasty", also known as "decompressed kyphoplasty", as a method to mitigate cement leakage and conducted a comparative analysis with high viscosity cement vertebroplasty. We conducted a retrospective study that included 136 patients with single-level osteoporotic compression fractures. Among them, 70 patients underwent high viscosity cement vertebroplasty, while 66 patients received decompressed percutaneous kyphoplasty with low-viscosity cement. Comparison parameters included cement leakage rates, kyphotic angle alterations, and the occurrence of adjacent segment fractures. The overall cement leakage rate favored the decompressed kyphoplasty group (9.1% vs. 18.6%), although statistical significance was not achieved (p = 0.111). Nonetheless, the risk of intradiscal leakage significantly reduced in the decompressed kyphoplasty cohort (p = 0.011), which was particularly evident in cases lacking the preoperative cleft sign on X-rays. Kyphotic angle changes and the risk of adjacent segment collapse exhibited similar outcomes (p = 0.739 and 0.522, respectively). We concluded that decompressed kyphoplasty demonstrates efficacy in reducing intradiscal cement leakage, particularly benefiting patients without the preoperative cleft sign on X-rays by preventing intradiscal leakage.

Abstract
The colorimetric detection of glucose typically involves a peroxidase reaction producing a color, which is then recorded and analyzed. However, enzyme detection has difficulties with purification and storage. In addition, replacing enzyme detection with chemical methods involves time-consuming steps such as centrifugation and purification and the optical instruments used for colorimetric detection are often bulky and not portable. In this study, ammonium metavanadate and sulfuric acid were used to prepare the detection solution instead of peroxidase to produce color. We also analyzed the effect of different concentrations of detection solution on absorbance sensitivity. Finally, a flip chip blue Mini-LEDs miniaturized optical instrument (FC blue Mini-LEDs MOI) was designed for glucose detection using optics fiber, collimating lenses, a miniaturized spectrometer, and an FC Blue Mini-LEDs with a center wavelength of 459 nm. While detecting glucose solutions in the concentration range of 0.1-10 mM by the developed MOI, the regression equation of y = 0.0941x + 0.1341, R2 of 0.9744, the limit of detection was 2.15 mM, and the limit of quantification was 7.163 mM. Furthermore, the preparation of the detection solution only takes 10 min, and the absorbance sensitivity of the optimized detection solution could be increased by 2.3 times. The detection solution remained stable with only a 0.6% decrease in absorbance compared to the original after storing it in a refrigerated environment at 3 °C for 14 days. The method proposed in this study for detecting glucose using FC blue light Mini-LEDs MOI reduces the use of peroxidase. In addition, it has a wide detection range that includes blood as well as non-invasive saliva and tear fluids, providing patients with a miniaturized, highly sensitive, and quantifiable glucose detection system.

Abstract
Triboelectrification necessitates a frictional interaction between two materials, and their contact electrification is characteristically based on the polarity variance in the triboelectric series. Utilizing this fundamental advantage of the triboelectric phenomenon, different materials can be identified according to their contact electrification capability. Herein, an in-depth analysis of the amino acids present in the stratum corneum of human skin is performed and these are quantified regarding triboelectric polarization. The principal focus of this study lies in analyzing and identifying the amino acids present in copious amounts in the stratum corneum to explain their positive behavior during the contact electrification process. Thus, an augmented triboelectric series of amino acids with quantified triboelectric charging polarity by scrutinizing the transfer charge, work function, and atomic percentage is presented. Furthermore, the chirality of aspartic acid as it is most susceptible to racemization with clear consequences on the human skin is detected. The study is expected to accelerate research exploiting triboelectrification and provide valuable information on the surface properties and biological activities of these important biomolecules.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The study aimed to develop a combined model that integrates deep learning (DL), radiomics, and clinical data to classify lung nodules into benign or malignant categories, and to further classify lung nodules into different pathological subtypes and Lung Imaging Reporting and Data System (Lung-RADS) scores. MATERIALS AND METHODS The proposed model was trained, validated, and tested using three datasets: one public dataset, the Lung Nodule Analysis 2016 (LUNA16) Grand challenge dataset (n = 1004), and two private datasets, the Lung Nodule Received Operation (LNOP) dataset (n = 1027) and the Lung Nodule in Health Examination (LNHE) dataset (n = 1525). The proposed model used a stacked ensemble model by employing a machine learning (ML) approach with an AutoGluon-Tabular classifier. The input variables were modified 3D convolutional neural network (CNN) features, radiomics features, and clinical features. Three classification tasks were performed: Task 1: Classification of lung nodules into benign or malignant in the LUNA16 dataset; Task 2: Classification of lung nodules into different pathological subtypes; and Task 3: Classification of Lung-RADS score. Classification performance was determined based on accuracy, recall, precision, and F1-score. Ten-fold cross-validation was applied to each task. RESULTS The proposed model achieved high accuracy in classifying lung nodules into benign or malignant categories in LUNA 16 with an accuracy of 92.8%, as well as in classifying lung nodules into different pathological subtypes with an F1-score of 75.5% and Lung-RADS scores with an F1-score of 80.4%. CONCLUSION Our proposed model provides an accurate classification of lung nodules based on the benign/malignant, different pathological subtypes, and Lung-RADS system.

Abstract
To valorize livestock manure, the present study investigated the production of biochar from cow dung (CD) by microwave pyrolysis. The pore properties and chemical characteristics of CD and CD-based biochar products were found to correlate with the process parameters like microwave power (300-1000 W) and residence time (5-20 min). The findings indicated that CD is an excellent biomass based on the richness of lignocellulosic constituents from the results of proximate analysis and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Higher calorific values were obtained at mild microwave conditions, giving the maximal enhancement factor 139% in comparison with the calorific value of CD (18.97 MJ/kg). Also, it can be concluded that the biochar product obtained at 800 W for a holding time of 5 min had the maximal BET surface area of 127 m2/g and total pore volume of 0.104 cm3/g, which were microporous and mesoporous in the nitrogen adsorption-desorption adsorption analysis. On the other hand, the CD-based biochar contained oxygen-containing functional groups and inorganic minerals based on the spectroscopic analyses by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), thus featuring to be prone to hydrophilicity in aqueous solutions.

Abstract
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), a common primary tumor of liver is a leading cause of cancer-associated deaths. Improving cellular apoptosis and enhancing autophagic clearance is been considered to improve treatment outcomes of HCC. Polyphenols from Pinus morrisonicola (Hayata) have shown various physiological and therapeutic benefits and the flavonoid chrysin is been known for their anticancer effects. However, the main bioactive principle and the mechanism underlying the antitumor activity of pine needle extract are not clear yet. In this study, the effects of ethanol extract from pine needle on HCC cells were determined. The results show that when compared with administration of chrysin alone, a fraction containing pinocembrin, chrysin, and tiliroside significantly reduced autophagy and increased apoptosis. The results also correlated with decrease in cell cycle regulators and the autophagic proteins like LC3-II. Collectively, the results imply the fraction containing pinocembrin, chrysin, and tiliroside as an ideal complementary medicine for an effective antitumor activity.

Abstract
A new automated, generic analytical approach for determining the clinical disinfectant o-phthalaldehyde (OPA) is reported in this study. The proposed sequential injection analysis (SIA) is based on the online reaction of the OPA with glycine/N-acetylcysteine (NAC) in a neutral medium (pH = 7.0) to form a highly fluorescent isoindole derivative. All critical flow and reaction variables were investigated, while validation was carried out in the linearity detection range (0.0075-0.02%). As a result, excellent linearity (R2 > 0.99) and precision (1.5-2.4% for repeatability and 0.7-2.2% for reproducibility) were achieved for the reference OPA solutions. Furthermore, reasonable concentration verification of OPA disinfection (0.2-0.6%) in healthcare institutes can be achieved using the developed fluorescent SIA due to its good sensitivity (0.111 V/%) and precision (1.0-2.3% for intermediate precision) around the minimum effective concentration (MEC) of 0.3% for Cidex-OPA disinfectant.

Abstract
Phthalate exposure is widespread and has a global impact. Growing evidence shows that mono-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (MEHP) exposure has a negative impact on human health. However, whether MEHP exposure is associated with mortality and other adverse outcomes in hemodialysis patients remains unknown. This study prospectively enrolled 217 patients on maintenance hemodialysis from June 30, 2021, to August 16, 2022. Baseline serum MEHP, di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), and indoxyl sulfate (IS) concentrations were measured. Primary endpoints were all-cause mortality or composite adverse outcomes, including all-cause death plus hospitalization due to cardiovascular disease, heart failure, stroke, infection, or cancer. Serum MEHP concentrations were positively associated with DEHP but not indoxyl sulfate concentrations in hemodialysis patients. Additionally, serum MEHP concentrations were significantly and independently associated with all-cause mortality and composite adverse outcomes (adjusted hazard ratios [HRs], 1.04 and 1.03 per ng/mL, 95% confidence intervals [CIs], 1.01-1.07 and 1.00-1.05; p = 0.016 and 0.015, respectively). We found a cutoff value of MEHP for predicting both endpoints. Patients with serum MEHP concentrations of ≥ 41.8 ng/mL had much higher risks for all-cause mortality and composite adverse outcomes (adjusted HRs, 39.2 and 13; 95% CIs, 2.44-65.7 and 2.74-61.4; p = 0.011 and 0.001, respectively). MEHP exposure is significantly associated with higher risks for all-cause mortality and composite adverse outcomes. Hemodialysis patients with serum MEHP concentrations above 41.8 ng/mL had much poorer prognoses regarding both outcomes.

Abstract
Hypoxic microenvironment and limited penetration of photosensitizers within solid tumors are two crucial factors that restrict photodynamic therapy (PDT) efficacy. Herein, a new fluorinated mixed micelle (M60@PFC-Ce6) is developed as a tumor-penetrating and oxygen-enriching nanoplatform, which consists of chlorin e6 (Ce6) and perfluorocarbons (PFCs) co-loaded into fluorinated micelles to relieve hypoxia conditions as well as folate as targeting ligand that facilitates the selective biodistribution within tumor solids. The incorporation of fluorinated copolymers into mixed micelles exhibits not only a great increase in the oxygen-loading capacity, but also improves the stability of liquid PFCs emulsion within micelles without leakage. M60@PFC-Ce6 shows excellent oxygen delivery capability, good intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and superior phototoxicity in vitro for both 2D monolayer of cells and 3D multicellular spheroid model. These results indicate the enriched oxygen delivery and increased cellular uptake resulting from folate-targeted ability to enhance ROS production and PDT efficacy. The penetration study of M60@PFC-Ce6 into a 3D spheroid confirms that small micellar size and folate-conjugation are beneficial for micelles to penetrate and accumulate within spheroids. Thus, a new nanoplatform with enriched oxygen-carrying amounts, better drug penetration, and stable micellar properties that relieve tumor hypoxia and improve PDT efficacy is provided.

Abstract
Electrophoresis of a dielectric fluid droplet with constant surface charge density is investigated theoretically in this study. A pseudo-spectral method based on Chebyshev polynomials is adopted to solve the governing electrokinetic equations. It is found, among other things, that the larger the electrolyte strength in the ambient solution is, the slower the droplet moves in general. This is due to the strong screening effect of the large amount of indifferent counterions in the neighborhood of the droplet, with no reinforcement of potential-determining ions adsorbing to the droplet surface. The droplet comes to a complete halt eventually. Critical points are discovered for highly charged droplets, at which the droplet surface becomes immobile and the interior fluid stops recirculating. The droplet moves like a rigid particle with constant mobility regardless of its viscosity, a situation referred to as the "solidification phenomenon." The deadlock between the spinning motions on the charged droplet surface induced by the electric driving force and the hydrodynamic driving force respectively is responsible for this peculiar phenomenon. This is also observed for a dielectric droplet with constant surface electric potential. We demonstrate here that it occurs in the constant surface charge density situation as well.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Endophytic fungi have proven to be a rich source of novel natural products with a wide-array of biological activities and higher levels of structural diversity. RESULTS Chemical investigation on the liquid- and solid-state fermented products of Chaetomium globosum Km1226 isolated from the littoral medicinal herb Atriplex maximowicziana Makino resulted in the isolation of compounds 1-14. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic analysis as three previously undescribed C13-polyketides, namely aureonitol C (1), mollipilins G (2), and H (3), along with eleven known compounds 4-14. Among these, mollipilin A (5) exhibited significant nitric oxide production inhibitory activity in LPS-induced BV-2 microglial cells with an IC50 value of 0.7 ± 0.1 µM, and chaetoglobosin D (10) displayed potent anti-angiogenesis property in human endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) with an IC50 value of 0.8 ± 0.3 µM. CONCLUSIONS Three previously unreported compounds 1-3 were isolated and identified. Mollipilin A (5) and chaetoglobosin D (10) could possibly be developed as anti-inflammatory and anti-angiogenic lead drugs, respectively.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study investigated the effect of uteroplacental insufficiency (UPI) on renal development by detecting metabolic alterations in the kidneys of rats with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). METHODS On gestational day 17, pregnant Sprague Dawley rats were selected and allocated randomly to either the IUGR group or the control group. The IUGR group received a protocol involving the closure of bilateral uterine vessels, while the control group underwent a sham surgery. The rat pups were delivered on gestational day 22 by natural means. Pups were randomly recruited from both the control and IUGR groups on the seventh day after birth. The kidneys were surgically removed to conduct Western blot and metabolomic analyses. RESULTS IUGR was produced by UPI, as evidenced by the significantly lower body weights of the pups with IUGR compared to the control pups on postnatal day 7. UPI significantly increased the levels of cleaved caspase-3 (p < 0.05) and BAX/Bcl-2 (p < 0.01) in the pups with IUGR. Ten metabolites exhibited statistically significant differences between the groups (q < 0.05). Metabolic pathway enrichment analysis demonstrated statistically significant variations between the groups in the metabolism related to fructose and mannose, amino and nucleotide sugars, and inositol phosphate. CONCLUSIONS UPI alters kidney metabolism in growth-restricted newborn rats and induces renal apoptosis. The results of our study have the potential to provide new insights into biomarkers and metabolic pathways that are involved in the kidney changes generated by IUGR.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pain is often neglected in disabled older population, especially in Taiwan where the population of institutional residents is rapidly growing. Our study aimed to investigate pain prevalence and associated factors among institutional residents to improve pain assessment and management. METHODS This nationwide study recruited 5,746 institutional residents in Taiwan between July 2019 and February 2020. Patient self-report was considered the most valid and reliable indicator of pain. A 5-point verbal rating scale was used to measure pain intensity, with a score ranging from 2 to 5 indicating the presence of pain. Associated factors with pain, including comorbidities, functional dependence, and quality of life, were also assessed. RESULTS The mean age of the residents was 77.1 ± 13.4 years, with 63.1% of them aged over 75 years. Overall, 40.3% of the residents reported pain, of whom 51.2% had moderate to severe pain. Pain was more common in residents with comorbidities and significantly impacted emotions and behavior problems, and the mean EQ5D score, which is a measure of health-related quality of life (p < .001). Interestingly, pain was only related to instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) and not activities of daily living (ADL). On the other hand, dementia was significantly negatively associated with pain (p < .001), with an estimated odds of 0.63 times (95% CI: 0.53-0.75) for the presence of pain when compared to residents who did not have dementia. CONCLUSIONS Unmanaged pain is common among institutional residents and is associated with comorbidities, IADL, emotional/behavioral problems, and health-related quality of life. Older residents may have lower odds of reporting pain due to difficulty communicating their pain, even through the use of a simple 5-point verbal rating scale. Therefore, more attention and effort should be directed towards improving pain evaluation in this vulnerable population .

Abstract
Hemophilia is a genetic disorder linked to the sex chromosomes, resulting in impaired blood clotting due to insufficient intrinsic coagulation factors. There are approximately one million individuals worldwide with hemophilia, with hemophilia A being the most prevalent form. The current treatment for hemophilia A involves the administration of clotting factor VIII (FVIII) through regular and costly injections, which only provide temporary relief and pose inconveniences to patients. In utero transplantation (IUT) is an innovative method for addressing genetic disorders, taking advantage of the underdeveloped immune system of the fetus. This allows mesenchymal stromal cells to play a role in fetal development and potentially correct genetic abnormalities. The objective of this study was to assess the potential recovery of coagulation disorders in FVIII knockout hemophilia A mice through the administration of human amniotic fluid mesenchymal stromal cells (hAFMSCs) via IUT at the D14.5 fetal stage. The findings revealed that the transplanted human cells exhibited fusion with the recipient liver, with a ratio of approximately one human cell per 10,000 mouse cells and produced human FVIII protein in the livers of IUT-treated mice. Hemophilia A pups born to IUT recipients demonstrated substantial improvement in their coagulation issues from birth throughout the growth period of up to 12 weeks of age. Moreover, FVIII activity reached its peak at 6 weeks of age, while the levels of FVIII inhibitors remained relatively low during the 12-week testing period in mice with hemophilia. In conclusion, the results indicated that prenatal intrahepatic therapy using hAFMSCs has the potential to improve clotting issues in FVIII knockout mice, suggesting it as a potential clinical treatment for individuals with hemophilia A.

Abstract
The contractile vacuole complex (CVC) is a dynamic and morphologically complex membrane organelle, comprising a large vesicle (bladder) linked with a tubular reticulum (spongiome). CVCs provide key osmoregulatory roles across diverse eukaryotic lineages, but probing the mechanisms underlying their structure and function is hampered by the limited tools available for in vivo analysis. In the experimentally tractable ciliate Tetrahymena thermophila, we describe four proteins that, as endogenously tagged constructs, localize specifically to distinct CVC zones. The DOPEY homolog Dop1p and the CORVET subunit Vps8Dp localize both to the bladder and spongiome but with different local distributions that are sensitive to osmotic perturbation, whereas the lipid scramblase Scr7p colocalizes with Vps8Dp. The H+-ATPase subunit Vma4 is spongiome specific. The live imaging permitted by these probes revealed dynamics at multiple scales including rapid exchange of CVC-localized and soluble protein pools versus lateral diffusion in the spongiome, spongiome extension and branching, and CVC formation during mitosis. Although the association with DOP1 and VPS8D implicate the CVC in endosomal trafficking, both the bladder and spongiome might be isolated from bulk endocytic input.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Feline mammary carcinoma (FMC) is one of the most prevalent malignancies of female cats. FMC is highly metastatic and thus leads to poor disease outcomes. Among all metastases, liver metastasis occurs in about 25% of FMC patients. However, the mechanism underlying hepatic metastasis of FMC remains largely uncharacterized. RESULTS Herein, we demonstrate that FMC-derived extracellular vesicles (FMC-EVs) promotes the liver metastasis of FMC by activating hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) to prime a hepatic premetastatic niche (PMN). Moreover, we provide evidence that sphingosine kinase 1 (SK1) delivered by FMC-EV was pivotal for the activation of HSC and the formation of hepatic PMN. Depletion of SK1 impaired cargo sorting in FMC-EV and the EV-potentiated HSC activation, and abolished hepatic colonization of FMC cells. CONCLUSIONS Taken together, our findings uncover a previously uncharacterized mechanism underlying liver-metastasis of FMC and provide new insights into prognosis and treatment of this feline malignancy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In a heterogeneous population of cells, individual cells can behave differently and respond variably to the environment. This cellular diversity can be assessed by measuring DNA methylation patterns. The loci with variable methylation patterns are informative of cellular heterogeneity and may serve as biomarkers of diseases and developmental progression. Cell-to-cell methylation heterogeneity can be evaluated through single-cell methylomes or computational techniques for pooled cells. However, the feasibility and performance of these approaches to precisely estimate methylation heterogeneity require further assessment. RESULTS Here, we proposed model-based methods adopted from a mathematical framework originally from biodiversity, to estimate genome-wide DNA methylation heterogeneity. We evaluated the performance of our models and the existing methods with feature comparison, and tested on both synthetic datasets and real data. Overall, our methods have demonstrated advantages over others because of their better correlation with the actual heterogeneity. We also demonstrated that methylation heterogeneity offers an additional layer of biological information distinct from the conventional methylation level. In the case studies, we showed that distinct profiles of methylation heterogeneity in CG and non-CG methylation can predict the regulatory roles between genomic elements in Arabidopsis. This opens up a new direction for plant epigenomics. Finally, we demonstrated that our score might be able to identify loci in human cancer samples as putative biomarkers for early cancer detection. CONCLUSIONS We adopted the mathematical framework from biodiversity into three model-based methods for analyzing genome-wide DNA methylation heterogeneity to monitor cellular heterogeneity. Our methods, namely MeH, have been implemented, evaluated with existing methods, and are open to the research community.

Abstract
Enhanced attachment ability is common in plants on islands to avoid potential fatal passive dispersal. However, whether island insects also have increased attachment ability remains unclear. Here we measured the attachment of a flightless weevil, Pachyrhynchus sarcitis kotoensis, from tropical islands, and compared it with documented arthropods from the mainland. We examined the morphology and material gradient of its attachment devices to identify the specific adaptive modifications for attachment. We find that the weevil has much stronger attachment force and higher safety factor than previously studied arthropods, regardless of body size and substrate roughness. This probably results from the specific flexible bases of the adhesive setae on the third footpad of the legs. This softer material on the setal base has not been reported hitherto and we suggest that it acts as a flexible hinge to form intimate contact to substrate more effectively. By contrast, no morphological difference in tarsomeres and setae between the weevil and other beetles is observed. Our results show the remarkably strong attachment of an island insect and highlights the potential adaptive benefits of strong attachment in windy island environment. The unique soft bases of the adhesive hairs may inspire the development of strong biomimetic adhesives.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Antenatal corticosteroids are considered the standard of care for pregnant women at risk for preterm birth, but studies examining their potential risks are scarce. We aimed to estimate the associations of antenatal corticosteroids with three severe adverse events: sepsis, heart failure, and gastrointestinal bleeding, in pregnant women. METHODS Of 2,157,321 pregnant women, 52,119 at 24 weeks 0/7 days to 36 weeks 6/7 days of gestation were included in this self-controlled case series study during the study period of 2009-2018. We estimated incidence rates of three severe adverse events: sepsis, heart failure, and gastrointestinal bleeding. Conditional Poisson regression was used to calculate incidence rate ratios (IRRs) for comparing incidence rates of the adverse events in each post-treatment period compared to those during the baseline period among pregnant women exposed to a single course of antenatal corticosteroid treatment. RESULTS Among 52,119 eligible participants who received antenatal corticosteroid treatment, the estimated incidence rates per 1000 person-years were 0.76 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.69-0.83) for sepsis, 0.31 (95% CI: 0.27-0.36) for heart failure, and 11.57 (95% CI: 11.27-11.87) for gastrointestinal bleeding. The IRRs at 5 ~ 60 days after administration of antenatal corticosteroids were 5.91 (95% CI: 3.10-11.30) for sepsis and 4.45 (95% CI: 2.63-7.55) for heart failure, and 1.26 (95% CI: 1.02-1.55) for gastrointestinal bleeding; and the IRRs for days 61 ~ 180 were 2.00 (95% CI: 1.01-3.96) for sepsis, 3.65 (95% CI: 2.14-6.22) for heart failure, and 1.81 (95% CI: 1.56-2.10) for gastrointestinal bleeding. CONCLUSIONS This nationwide population-based study suggests that a single course of antenatal corticosteroids is significantly associated with a 1.3- to 5.9-fold increased risk of sepsis, heart failure, and gastrointestinal bleeding in pregnant women. Maternal health considerations, including recommendations for adverse event monitoring, should be included in future guidelines for antenatal corticosteroid treatment.

Abstract
To simultaneously express and improve expression levels of multiple viral proteins of a porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), polycistronic baculovirus surface display vectors were constructed and characterized. We engineered polycistronic baculovirus surface display vectors, namely, pBacDual Display EGFP(BacDD)-2GP2-2GP4 and pBacDD-4GP5N34A/N51A (mtGP5), which simultaneously express and display the ectodomain of His-tagged GP2-gp64TM-CTD, His-tagged GP4-gp64TM-CTD, and His-tagged mtGP5-gp64TM-CTD fusion proteins of PRRSV on cell membrane of Sf-9 cells. Specific pathogen-free (SPF) pigs were administered intramuscularly in 2 doses at 21 and 35 days of age with genetic recombinant baculoviruses-infected cells. Our results revealed a high level of ELISA-specific antibodies, neutralizing antibodies, IL-4, and IFN-γ in SPF pigs immunized with the developed PRRSV subunit vaccine. To further assess the co-expression efficiency of different gene combinations, pBacDD-GP2-GP3-2GP4 and pBacDD-2mtGP5-2M constructs were designed for the co-expression of the ectodomain of His-tagged GP2-gp64TM-CTD, His-tagged GP3-gp64TM-CTD, and His-tagged GP4-gp64TM-CTD proteins as well as the ectodomain of His-tagged mtGP5-gp64TM-CTD and His-tagged M-gp64TM-CTD fusion proteins of PRRSV. To develop an ELISA assay for detecting antibodies against PRRSV proteins, the sequences encoding the ectodomain of the GP2, GP3, GP4, mtGP5, and M of PRRSV were amplified and subcloned into the pET32a vector and expressed in E. coli. In this work, the optimum conditions for expressing PRRSV proteins were evaluated, and the results suggested that 4 × 105 of Sf-9 cells supplemented with 7% fetal bovine serum and infected with the recombinant baculoviruses at an MOI of 20 for three days showed a higher expression levels of the protein. Taken together, the polycistronic baculovirus surface display system is a useful tool to increase expression levels of viral proteins and to simultaneously express multiple viral proteins of PRRSV for the preparation of subunit vaccines.

Abstract
Piwi-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) are a new class of small, non-coding RNAs, crucial in the regulation of gene expression. Recent research has revealed links between piRNAs, viral defense mechanisms, and certain human cancers. Due to their clinical potential, there is a great interest in identifying piRNAs from large genome databases through efficient computational methods. However, piRNAs lack conserved structure and sequence homology across species, which makes piRNA detection challenging. Current detection algorithms heavily rely on manually crafted features, which may overlook or improperly use certain features. Furthermore, there is a lack of suitable computational tools for analyzing large-scale databases and accurately identifying piRNAs. To address these issues, we propose LSTM4piRNA, a highly efficient deep learning-based method for predicting piRNAs in large-scale genome databases. LSTM4piRNA utilizes a compact LSTM network that can effectively analyze RNA sequences from extensive datasets to detect piRNAs. It can automatically learn the dependencies among RNA sequences, and regularization is further integrated to reduce the generalization error. Comprehensive performance evaluations based on piRNAs from the piRBase database demonstrate that LSTM4piRNA outperforms current advanced methods and is well-suited for analysis with large-scale databases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) not only cause acute, devastating mucocutaneous reactions but also have long-lasting implications on survivors' lives. OBJECTIVES To quantify the lifetime burden of SJS/TEN. METHODS The cumulative incidence rate (CIR), life expectancy (LE), loss-of-life expectancy (LoLE) and lifetime healthcare expenditure (HE) for SJS/TEN were estimated over the period from 2008 to 2019 using data from the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan and life tables of vital statistics. RESULTS In this nationwide cohort of 6552 incident SJS/TEN cases, a trend towards a decrease in the CIR was observed between 2008 and 2019. Compared with the general population, patients with SJS/TEN experience a tremendous loss of 9.43 (1.06) [mean (SEM)] years of LE after diagnosis of SJS/TEN. Male patients with SJS/TEN had higher LoLE [10.74 (1.22) vs. 7.69 (1.43) years] and annual HE than females. Younger age at diagnosis of SJS/TEN was associated with longer LE but greater LoLE and higher lifetime HE. Patients with intensive care unit admission on diagnosis, malignancy, diabetes mellitus, end-stage renal disease and SJS/TEN-associated sequelae experienced substantially greater LoLE and HE per life year. CONCLUSIONS Patients with SJS/TEN suffer substantial loss-of-LE and HE, particularly young patients, compared with the general population. These data provide a reference estimate of the lifetime burden of SJS/TEN to help health authorities evaluate the cost-effectiveness of future preventive and treatment strategies to minimize the burden of SJS/TEN.

Abstract
The stereoselectivity of glycosidic bond formation continues to pose a noteworthy hurdle in synthesizing carbohydrates, primarily due to the simultaneous occurrence of SN1 and SN2 processes during the glycosylation reaction. Here, we applied an in-depth analysis of the glycosylation mechanism by using low-temperature nuclear magnetic resonance and statistical approaches. A pathway driven by counterion exchanges and reaction byproducts was first discovered to outline the stereocontributions of intermediates. Moreover, the relative reactivity values, acceptor nucleophilic constants, and Hammett substituent constants (σ values) provided a general index to indicate the mechanistic pathways. These results could allow building block tailoring and reaction condition optimization in carbohydrate synthesis to be greatly facilitated and simplified.

Abstract
PmrA, an OmpR/PhoB-family response regulator, triggers gene transcription responsible for polymyxin resistance in bacteria by recognizing promoters where the canonical-35 element is replaced by the pmra-box, representing the PmrA recognition sequence. Here, we report a cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) structure of a bacterial PmrA-dependent transcription activation complex (TAC) containing a PmrA dimer, an RNA polymerase σ70 holoenzyme (RNAPH) and the pbgP promoter DNA. Our structure reveals that the RNAPH mainly contacts the PmrA C-terminal DNA-binding domain (DBD) via electrostatic interactions and reorients the DBD three base pairs upstream of the pmra-box, resulting in a dynamic TAC conformation. In vivo assays show that the substitution of the DNA-recognition residue eliminated its transcriptional activity, while variants with altered RNAPH-interacting residues resulted in enhanced transcriptional activity. Our findings suggest that both PmrA recognition-induced DNA distortion and PmrA promoter escape play crucial roles in its transcriptional activation.

Abstract
Three-phase crystallization (TPC) was introduced in this study to purify L-menthol from menthol enantiomer mixtures in consideration of the formation of solid solutions. TPC is a new separation technology, which combines melt crystallization and vaporization to result in the desired crystalline product from a liquid mixture along with the unwanted components vaporized via the three-phase transformation by reducing temperature and pressure. The three-phase transformation conditions for the liquid menthol enantiomer mixtures were determined based on the thermodynamic calculations to direct the TPC experiments. A new model was proposed based on the mass and energy balances in consideration of the formation of the solid solutions to predict the yield and purity of the final L-menthol product during TPC. The yield and purity obtained from the TPC experiments were compared with those predicted by the model.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The lipid-lowering and anti-inflammatory effects of statins and fibrates may ameliorate periodontitis. Patients with hyperlipidemia tend to have a worse periodontal status. This study assessed the association between the use of statins/fibrates and the incidence of chronic periodontitis in patients with hyperlipidemia in Taiwan. METHODS This retrospective cohort study enrolled patients newly diagnosed with hyperlipidemia between 2001 and 2012 from the 2000 Longitudinal Generation Tracking Database and followed them for 5 years. The study population was divided into four groups: statin monotherapy, fibrate monotherapy, combination therapy (both statins and fibrates), and control (neither statins nor fibrates). Each patient in the treatment group was matched at a ratio of 1:1 with a control. Chronic periodontitis risk was compared in the three study arms by using a Cox proportional hazard model. RESULTS Chronic periodontitis risk was reduced by 25.7% in the combination therapy group compared with the control group (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 0.743; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.678-0.815). Low dose (<360 cumulative defined daily dose [cDDD]) and shorter duration (<2 years) of statin monotherapy seem to be associated with an increased risk of chronic periodontitis; high dose (≥720 cDDD/≥1080 cDDD) and longer duration (≥3 years) of statin/fibrate monotherapy may be correlated with a lower risk of periodontitis. Hydrophobic statin users had a lower chronic periodontitis risk than hydrophilic statin users. CONCLUSION Chronic periodontitis risk was lower in patients with hyperlipidemia on combination treatment with statins and fibrates, and the risk decreased when patients used statins or fibrates for >3 years.

Abstract
The main goal of this study is to investigate the doping effects of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene on the needle-punched carbon/carbon (C/C) composites that are prepared by liquid-phase impregnation. In order to achieve, for the C/C composites, the purposes of high flexural strength, stable friction coefficient, low weight loss, and high thermal conductivity, our primary concern is to examine the flexural properties and the tribological performance, and then to explore a little further into the influence on thermal conductivity. In this study, carbon fiber preforms were first fabricated by needle-punched carbon-fiber cloth, and then liquid-phase phenolic resin, doped with different proportions of carbon nanotubes and graphene, was used as the impregnation solution to carry out multiple densification (impregnation-carbonization) cycles and fabricate various C/C composites. The main purpose was to probe into the doping effects of the CNTs and graphene, added to the impregnation solution, on the properties of C/C composites. The experimental results show that the addition of CNTs and graphene can improve the heat conductivity, flexural properties, and tribological performance of C/C composites, and the impact on these properties is more significant with the addition. Furthermore, the properties of graphene-doped C/C specimens are better than those of CNT-doped C/C specimens.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) are a class of low-melting molten salts (<100 °C) constituted entirely of ions, and their research has gained tremendous attention in line with their remarkably growing applications (>124,000 publications dated 30 August 2023 from the Web of ScienceTM). In this review, we first briefly discussed the recent developments and unique characteristics of ILs and zwitterionic liquids (ZILs). Compared to molecular solvents and other conventional organic compounds, (zwitter) ionic liquids carry negligible volatility and are potentially recyclable and reusable. For structures, both ILs and ZILs can be systematically tailor-designed and engineered and are synthetically fine-tunable. As such, ionic liquids, including chiral, supported, task-specific ILs, have been widely used as powerful ionic solvents as well as valuable additives and catalysts for many chemical reactions. Moreover, ILs have demonstrated their value for use as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) enhancers for DNA amplification, chemoselective artificial olfaction for targeted VOC analysis, and recognition-based affinity extraction. As the major focus of this review, we extensively discussed that small-molecule thermoresponsive ILs (TILs) and ZILs (zwitterionic TILs) are new types of smart materials and can be expeditiously discovered through the structure and phase separation (SPS) relationship study by the combinatorial approach. Using this SPS platform developed in our laboratory, we first depicted the rapid discovery of N,N-dialkylcycloammonium and 1,3,4-trialkyl-1,2,3-triazolium TILs that concomitantly exhibited LCST (lower critical solution temperature) phase transition in water and displayed biochemically attractive Tc values. Both smart IL materials were suited for applications to proteins and other biomolecules. Zwitterionic TILs are ZILs whose cations and anions are tethered together covalently and are thermoresponsive to temperature changes. These zwitterionic TIL materials can serve as excellent extraction solvents, through temperature change, for biomolecules such as proteins since they differ from the common TIL problems often associated with unwanted ion exchanges during extractions. These unique structural characteristics of zwitterionic TIL materials greatly reduce and may avoid the denaturation of proteins under physiological conditions. Lastly, we argued that both rational structural design and combinatorial library synthesis of small-molecule TIL materials should take into consideration the important issues of their cytotoxicity and biosafety to the ecosystem, potentially causing harm to the environment and directly endangering human health. Finally, we would concur that before precise prediction and quantitative simulation of TIL structures can be realized, combinatorial chemistry may be the most convenient and effective technology platform to discover TIL expeditiously. Through our rational TIL design and combinatorial library synthesis and screening, we have demonstrated its power to discover novel chemical structures of both TILs and zwitterionic TILs. Undoubtedly, we will continue developing new small-molecule TIL structures and studying their applications related to other thermoresponsive materials.

Abstract
The rapid aging of the global population presents challenges in providing mental health care resources for older adults aged 65 and above. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated the global population's psychological distress due to social isolation and distancing. Thus, there is an urgent need to update scholarly knowledge on the effectiveness of mHealth applications to improve older people's mental health. This systematic review summarizes recent literature on chatbots aimed at enhancing mental health and well-being. Sixteen papers describing six apps or prototypes were reviewed, indicating the practicality, feasibility, and acceptance of chatbots for promoting mental health in older adults. Engaging with chatbots led to improvements in well-being and stress reduction, as well as a decrement in depressive symptoms. Mobile health applications addressing these studies are categorized for reference.

Abstract
The chemical investigation of a red alga Portieria hornemannii enabled the identification of three new halogenated monoterpenes (1-3) along with two previously identified metabolites (4 and 5). Their structures were determined by spectroscopic analysis and also by utilizing single-crystal diffraction analysis and quantum chemical calculation, as well as by comparison with literature data. Further corrections for dichloro and dibromo carbons using the sorted training set (STS) method were established in this study to significantly improve the accuracy in GIAO 13C NMR calculation of compounds 1-3. To discover the potential bioactive metabolites from P. hornemannii, the anti-inflammatory activities of all compounds were examined. Compounds 1 and 3-5 showed significant anti-inflammatory activity to inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the LPS-stimulated mature dendritic cells.

Abstract
This study focuses on the measurement and analysis of the complex permittivities of polymer blends using the field enhancement method (FEM). The blends, consisting of air-powder or solvent-solute mixtures, are placed in a Teflon holder and inserted into the FEM cavity to determine the complex permittivity. The resonant frequency and quality factor of the FEM cavity coupled with the samples provide information on the blends' dielectric constant and loss tangents. To extract the complex permittivities of three specific samples of DC-840, MCL-805, and MCL-Siloxane, we employ effective medium theories and the high-frequency structure simulator (HFSS) together with the measured data. The results reveal that when the volume fraction of the DC-840 solute in the xylene solvent surpasses a specific threshold, the dielectric constants and the loss tangents experience a notable increase. This phenomenon, known as percolation, strongly correlates with the viscosity of polymer blends. The observed percolation effect on the dielectric behavior is further elucidated using the generalized dielectric constant and the Debye model. By employing these models, the percolation effect and its impact on the dielectric properties of the blends can be explained.

Abstract
We investigated the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying the processing of combinatorial unstated meaning. Sentences like "Charles jumped for 5 minutes." engender an iterative meaning that is not explicitly stated but enriched by comprehenders beyond simple composition. Comprehending unstated meaning involves meaning contextualization-integrative meaning search in sentential-discourse context. Meanwhile, people differ in how they process information with varying context sensitivity. We hypothesized that unstated meaning processing would vary with individual socio-cognitive propensity indexed by the Autism-Spectrum Quotient (AQ), accompanied by differential cortical engagements. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we examined the processing of sentences with unstated iterative meaning in typically-developed individuals and found an engagement of the fronto-parietal network, including the left pars triangularis (L.PT), right intraparietal (R.IPS), and parieto-occipital sulcus (R.POS). We suggest that the L.PT subserves a contextual meaning search, while the R.IPS/POS supports enriching unstated iteration in consideration of event durations and interval lengths. Moreover, the activation level of these regions negatively correlated with AQ. Higher AQ ties to lower L.PT activation, likely reflecting weaker context sensitivity, along with lower IPS activation, likely reflecting weaker computation of events' numerical-temporal specifications. These suggest that the L.PT and R.IPS/POS support the processing of combinatorial unstated meaning, with the activation level modulated by individual cognitive styles.

Abstract
Background Although percutaneous transthoracic catheter drainage (PCD) has been proven effective in lung abscesses, the optimal timing of PCD is still unclear. The study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of early versus delayed drainage in patients with lung abscesses. Methods This retrospective study included 103 consecutive patients with liquefied lung abscesses more than 3 cm confirmed by a CT scan received CT-guided PCD over 16 years, from July 2005 to September 2021, in a single institution were reviewed. Early drainage was defined as PCD within one week after a lung abscess was diagnosed. The primary outcome was 90-day mortality. The secondary outcomes included perioperative complications and patients' length of hospital stay (LoS). Factors associated with 90-day mortality and LoS were also analyzed. The key statistical methods were Chi-square test, Fisher's exact test, Student t-test, and Pearson correlation. Results Amount the 103 patients, there were 64 patients who received early PCD, and 39 patients received delayed PCD. Between the two groups, there were no significant differences in clinical characteristics, 90-day mortality, or perioperative complications. The LoS was significantly shortened in early PCD group (28.6 ± 25.5 vs. 39.3 ± 26.8 (days), p = 0.045). Higher Charlson comorbidity index, secondary lung abscess, and liver cirrhosis were associated with higher mortality (all p < 0.05). Positive sputum culture significantly increased the LoS (coefficient 19.35 (10.19, 28.50), p < 0.001). Conclusion The 90-day mortality and complications were similar for early PCD and delayed PCD patients, but LoS was significantly shortened in early PCD patient.

Abstract
Wearable flexible strain sensors with spatial resolution enable the acquisition and analysis of complex actions for noninvasive personalized healthcare applications. To provide secure contact with skin and to avoid environmental pollution after usage, sensors with biocompatibility and biodegradability are highly desirable. Herein, wearable flexible strain sensors composed of crosslinked gold nanoparticle (GNP) thin films as the active conductive layer and transparent biodegradable polyurethane (PU) films as the flexible substrate are developed. The patterned GNP films (micrometer- to millimeter-scale square and rectangle geometry, alphabetic characters, and wave and array patterns) are transferred onto the biodegradable PU film via a facile, clean, rapid and high-precision contact printing method, without the need of a sacrificial polymer carrier or organic solvents. The GNP-PU strain sensor with low Young's modulus (≈17.8 MPa) and high stretchability showed good stability and durability (10 000 cycles) as well as degradability (42% weight loss after 17 days at 74 °C in water). The GNP-PU strain sensor arrays with spatiotemporal strain resolution are applied as wearable eco-friendly electronics for monitoring subtle physiological signals (e.g., mapping of arterial lines and sensing pulse waveforms) and large-strain actions (e.g., finger bending).

Abstract
Ti-based metallic glasses have a high potential for implant applications. The feasibility of a new biocompatible Ti-based bulk metallic glass composite for selective laser melting (SLM) had been examined. Therefore, it is necessary to design a high-glass-forming-ability Ti-based metallic glass (∆Tx = 81 K, γ = 0.427, γm = 0.763), to fabricate a partial glass-formable spherical powder (the volume fraction of the amorphous phase in the atomized Ti-based powders being 73% [size < 25 μm], 61% [25-37 μm], and 50% [37-44 μm]), and establish an SLM parameter (a scan rate of 600 mm/s, a power of 120 W, and an overlap of 10%). The Ti42Zr35Si5Co12.5Sn2.5Ta3 bulk metallic glass composite was successfully fabricated through SLM. This study demonstrates that the TiZrSiCoSnTa system constitutes a promising basis for the additive manufacturing process in terms of preparing biocompatible metallic glass composites into complicated graded foam shapes.

Abstract
The structural coexistence of dual rigid and mobile sublattices in superionic Argyrodites yields ultralow lattice thermal conductivity along with decent electrical and ionic conductivities and therefore attracts intense interest for batteries, fuel cells, and thermoelectric applications. However, a comprehensive understanding of their underlying lattice and diffusive dynamics in terms of the interplay between phonons and mobile ions is missing. Herein, inelastic neutron scattering is employed to unravel that phonon softening on heating to Tc ≈ 350 K triggers fast Ag diffusion in the canonical superionic Argyrodite Ag8 GeSe6 . Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations reproduce the experimental neutron scattering signals and identify the partially ultrafast Ag diffusion with a large diffusion coefficient of 10-4 cm-2 s-1 . The study illustrates the microscopic interconnection between soft phonons and mobile ions and provides a paradigm for an intertwined interaction of the lattice and diffusive dynamics in superionic materials.
