Investigating the Interaction of Water Vapour with Aminopropyl Groups on the Surface of Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles

Aldehyde-containing clays: a sustainable approach against the olive tree pest, Bactrocera oleae

A set of organic/inorganic layered materials was obtained by functionalizing a montmorillonite-containing bentonite natural clay with linear aliphatic C6 or C7 aldehydes through a cost-effective and technologically simple incipient-wetness deposition method. The solids were investigated by means of a multi-technique approach (X-ray powder diffraction, XRPD, scanning electron microscopy, SEM, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, FT-IR, thermogravimetric analysis, TGA, elemental analysis and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, ssNMR) to clarify the nature of the deposited organic species and the mode of interaction between the aldehyde and the clay. Since both natural clays and short-chain linear aldehydes find application as alternative strategies in the control of the olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae, the hybrid layered materials were tested under real-life conditions and their insect-inhibiting capability was evaluated in open-field trials on olive tree orchards in Tuscany, Central Italy. Specific tests were conducted to evaluate the resistance of the solids to weathering and their capability to provide a constant and long-lasting release of the bioactive ingredient. Aldehyde-containing bentonite clays have shown promising performance in controlling B. oleae infestation (with up to 86-95% reduction of affected olive fruits) in open-field trials across two years in two locations with different pedological and meteo-climatic characteristics.

Amino-Alkylphosphonate-Grafted TiO2: How the Alkyl Chain Length Impacts the Surface Properties and the Adsorption Efficiency for Pd

Amino-alkylphosphonic acid-grafted TiO₂ materials are of increasing interest in a variety of applications such as metal sorption, heterogeneous catalysis, CO₂ capture, and enzyme immobilization. To date, systematic insights into the synthesis-properties-performance correlation are missing for such materials, albeit giving important know-how towards their applicability and limitations. In this work, the impact of the chain length and modification conditions (concentration and temperature) of amino-alkylphosphonic acid-grafted TiO₂ on the surface properties and adsorption performance of palladium is studied. Via grafting with aminomethyl-, 3-aminopropyl-, and 6-aminohexylphosphonic acid, combined with the spectroscopic techniques (DRIFT, ³¹P NMR, XPS) and zeta potential measurements, differences in surface properties between the C1, C3, and C6 chains are revealed. The modification degree decreases with increasing chain length under the same synthesis conditions, indicative of folded grafted groups that sterically shield an increasing area of binding sites with increasing chain length. Next, all techniques confirm the different surface interactions of a C1 chain compared to a C3 or C6 chain. This is in line with palladium adsorption experiments, where only for a C1 chain, the adsorption efficiency is affected by the precursor concentration used for modification. The absence of a straightforward correlation between the number of free NH₂ groups and the adsorption capacity for the different chain lengths indicates that other chain-length-specific surface interactions are controlling the adsorption performance. The increasing pH stability in the order of C1 < C3 < C6 can possibly be associated to a higher fraction of inaccessible hydrophilic sites due to the presence of folded structures. Lastly, the comparison of adsorption performance and pH stability with 3-aminopropyl(triethoxysilane)-grafted TiO₂ reveals the applicability of both grafting methods depending on the envisaged pH during sorption.

Grafting Going Green: Toward a Sustainable Preparation of Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Materials

Organic–inorganic hybrid materials find many applications in catalysis, nanotechnology, electronics, and many others. Grafting organic functionalities on inorganic supports is one of the most used methods for their preparation. Toluene is the solvent of choice for the grafting reaction, but it is fossil fuel-derived and not devoid of toxic effects. In this work, we explore the use of sustainable alternatives, i.e., (+)-α-pinene, (−)-β-pinene, dimethyl carbonate (DMC), (+)-limonene, and 2-methyl-tetrahydrofuran (MeTHF), as solvents for grafting. The grafting reaction between 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTS) and mesoporous ordered silica (MCM-41) was selected as a model for this study. A comparison of the rate of the grafting reaction in different solvents is reported. The resulting hybrid materials were analyzed by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and compared to the reference material prepared in toluene. MeTHF proved to be the best sustainable alternative to toluene for model grafting, providing a comparable product in a significantly shorter reaction time.

Silanization of 3D-Printed Silica Fibers and Monoliths

Surface functionalization of complex three-dimensional (3D) porous architectures has not been widely investigated despite their potential in different application domains. In this work, silanization was performed in silica 3D-printed porous structures, and the homogeneity of functional groups within the architecture was investigated by comparing the extent of the functionalization in the walls and core of the monolith. A silica ink was used for direct ink writing (DIW) to shape fibers and monoliths with different architectures and stacking designs. The surfaces of the fibers and monoliths were functionalized with 3-aminopropyl(triethoxysilane) (APTES) using different reaction conditions. The nature of the functional groups on the surface and the presence of RSiO_1.5 bonds were identified by solid-state ¹³C-NMR, ²⁹Si-NMR, and by ξ-potential measurements. Elemental analysis was used to quantify the concentration of bonded APTES in the core and walls of the monolith. The availability and hydrolytic stability of the introduced amine group on fibers were evaluated using the adsorption of PdCl₄^2- ions within the pH range of 2-5. The study found that geometries with interfiber distances above 250 μm are homogeneously functionalized with amine groups. As the interfiber distance of the monolith decreases, a significantly lower density of amine groups is detected in the core of the monolith. The determination of the homogeneity of 3D-printed monoliths makes this work relevant as it provides the limits of functionalization carried out in stirred batch reactors for geometrically defined structures produced from a 3D-printing process.

Advances in Amine-Surface Functionalization of Inorganic Adsorbents for Water Treatment and Antimicrobial Activities: A Review

In the last decade, adsorption has exhibited promising and effective outcomes as a treatment technique for wastewater contaminated with many types of pollutants such as heavy metals, dyes, pharmaceuticals, and bacteria. To achieve such effectiveness, a number of potential adsorbents have been synthesized and applied for water remediation and antimicrobial activities. Among these inorganic adsorbents (INAD), activated carbon, silica, metal oxide, metal nanoparticles, metal-organic fibers, and graphene oxide have been evaluated. In recent years, significant efforts have been made in the development of highly efficient adsorbent materials for gas and liquid phases. For gas capture and water decontamination, the most popular and known functionalization strategy is the chemical grafting of amine, due to its low cost, ecofriendliness, and effectiveness. In this context, various amines such as 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES), diethanolamine (DEA), dendrimer-based polyamidoamine (PAMAM), branched polyethyleneimine (PEI), and others are employed for the surface modification of INADs to constitute a large panel of resource and low-cost materials usable as an alternative to conventional treatments aimed at removing organic and inorganic pollutants and pathogenic bacteria. Amine-grafted INAD has long been considered as a promising approach for the adsorption of both inorganic and organic pollutants. The goal of this review is to provide an overview of surface modifications through amine grafting and their adsorption behavior under diverse conditions. Amine grafting strategies are investigated in terms of the effects of the solvent, temperature, and the concentration precursor. The literature survey presented in this work provides evidence of the significant potential of amine-grafted INAD to remove not only various contaminants separately from polluted water, but also to remove pollutant mixtures and bacteria.

Predicting the Conformation of Organic Catalysts Grafted on Silica Surfaces with Different Numbers of Tethering Chains: The Silicopodality Concept

Hybrid catalysts are attracting much attention, since they combine the versatility and efficiency of homogeneous organic catalysis with the robustness and thermal stability of solid materials, for example, mesoporous silica; in addition, they can be used in cascade reactions, for exploring both organic and inorganic catalysis at the same time. Despite the importance of the organic/inorganic interface in these materials, the effect of the grafting architecture on the final conformation of the organic layer (and hence its reactivity) is still largely unexplored. Here, we investigate a series of organosiloxanes comprising a pyridine ring (the catalyst model) and different numbers of alkylsiloxane chains used to anchor it to the MCM-41 surface. The hybrid interfaces are characterized with X-ray powder diffraction, thermogravimetric analyses, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance techniques and are modeled theoretically through molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, to determine the relationship between the number of chains and the average position of the pyridine group; MD simulations also provide some insights about temperature and solvent effects.

Influence of Silicodactyly in the Preparation of Hybrid Materials

The organic–inorganic hybrid materials have attracted great attention due to their improved or unusual properties that open promising applications in different areas such as optics, electronics, energy, environment, biology, medicine and heterogeneous catalysis. Different types of silicodactyl platforms grafted on silica inorganic supports can be used to synthesize hybrid materials. A careful evaluation of the dactyly of the organic precursors, normally alkoxysilanes, and of the type of interaction with the inorganic supports is presented. In fact, depending on the hydrophilicity of the silica surface (e.g., number and density of surface silanols) as well as on the grafting conditions, the hydrolysis and condensation reaction of the silylated moieties can involve only one or two out of three alkoxysilane groups. The influence of silicodactyly in the preparation of organic-inorganic silica-based hybrids is studied by TGA, ²⁹Si, ¹H and ¹³C solid-state NMR and FTIR spectroscopies, with the support of Molecular Dynamics calculations. Computational studies are used to forecast the influence of the different grafting configurations on the tendency of the silane to stick on the inorganic surface.

Acid properties of organosiliceous hybrid materials based on pendant (fluoro)aryl-sulfonic groups through a spectroscopic study with probe molecules

Hybrid heterogeneous catalysts containing (fluoro)aryl-sulfonic groups were characterized through combined spectroscopic techniques and adsorption of probe molecules, with their reactivity being modulated for acetal formation.

Combined solid-state NMR, FT-IR and computational studies on layered and porous materials

Understanding the structure-property relationship of solids is of utmost relevance for efficient chemical processes and technological applications in industries. This contribution reviews the concept of coupling three well-known characterization techniques (solid-state NMR, FT-IR and computational methods) for the study of solid state materials which possess 2D and 3D architectures and discusses the way it will benefit the scientific communities. It highlights the most fundamental and applied aspects of the proactive combined approach strategies to gather information at a molecular level. The integrated approach involving multiple spectroscopic and computational methods allows achieving an in-depth understanding of the surface, interfacial and confined space processes that are beneficial for the establishment of structure-property relationships. The role of ssNMR/FT-IR spectroscopic properties of probe molecules in monitoring the strength and distribution of catalytic active sites and their accessibility at the porous/layered surface is discussed. Both experimental and theoretical aspects will be considered by reporting relevant examples. This review also identifies and discusses the progress, challenges and future prospects in the field of synthesis and applications of layered and porous solids.

Supramolecular Organization in Confined Nanospaces

Empty spaces are abhorred by nature, which immediately rushes in to fill the void. Humans have learnt pretty well how to make ordered empty nanocontainers, and to get useful products out of them. When such an order is imparted to molecules, new properties may appear, often yielding advanced applications. This review illustrates how the organized void space inherently present in various materials: zeolites, clathrates, mesoporous silica/organosilica, and metal organic frameworks (MOF), for example, can be exploited to create confined, organized, and self-assembled supramolecular structures of low dimensionality. Features of the confining matrices relevant to organization are presented with special focus on molecular-level aspects. Selected examples of confined supramolecular assemblies - from small molecules to quantum dots or luminescent species - are aimed to show the complexity and potential of this approach. Natural confinement (minerals) and hyperconfinement (high pressure) provide further opportunities to understand and master the atomistic-level interactions governing supramolecular organization under nanospace restrictions.
