Abstract
Compared with the ripple of visible EuIII-based emission intensity induced by appended [FeIIN6] spin crossover (SCO) units, as detected in the triple-stranded [EuFe(L1)3]5+ helicate, the lanthanide-based luminescent detection of FeII spin-state equilibria could be improved significantly if the luminophore emission is shifted toward the near-infrared (NIR) domain. Replacing EuIII with NdIII in [NdFe(L1)3]5+ (i) maintains the favorable SCO properties in acetonitrile [critical temperature T1/2 = 322(2) K], (ii) saturates nonradiative vibrational relaxation processes in the 233-333 K range, and (iii) boosts the crucial intramolecular NdIII → FeII energy transfer rate processes, which are sensitive to the spin state of the FeII metallic center. Consequently, the steady-state NIR Nd(4F3/2 → 4IJ) emission of the luminophore is amplified and linearly correlated with the low-spin-[FeIIN6] and high-spin-[FeIIN6] mole fractions controlled by the SCO equilibrium. This paves the way for a straightforward and direct NIR luminescent reading/sensing of the FeII spin state in single molecules.

Tuning the photophysical properties of lanthanide(iii)/zinc(ii) ‘encapsulated sandwich’ metallacrowns emitting in the near-infrared range. Chem Sci 2022; 13:2919-2931. Abstract
A family of Zn16Ln(HA)16 metallacrowns (MCs; Ln = YbIII, ErIII, and NdIII; HA = picoline- (picHA2−), pyrazine- (pyzHA2−), and quinaldine- (quinHA2−) hydroximates) with an ‘encapsulated sandwich’ structure possesses outstanding luminescence properties in the near-infrared (NIR) and suitability for cell imaging. Here, to decipher which parameters affect their functional and photophysical properties and how the nature of the hydroximate ligands can allow their fine tuning, we have completed this Zn16Ln(HA)16 family by synthesizing MCs with two new ligands, naphthyridine- (napHA2−) and quinoxaline- (quinoHA2−) hydroximates. Zn16Ln(napHA)16 and Zn16Ln(quinoHA)16 exhibit absorption bands extended into the visible range and efficiently sensitize the NIR emissions of YbIII, ErIII, and NdIII upon excitation up to 630 nm. The energies of the lowest singlet (S1), triplet (T1) and intra-ligand charge transfer (ILCT) states have been determined. LnIII-centered total (QLLn) and intrinsic (QLnLn) quantum yields, sensitization efficiencies (ηsens), observed (τobs) and radiative (τrad) luminescence lifetimes have been recorded and analyzed in the solid state and in CH3OH and CD3OD solutions for all Zn16Ln(HA)16. We found that, within the Zn16Ln(HA)16 family, τrad values are not constant for a particular LnIII. The close in energy positions of T1 and ILCT states in Zn16Ln(picHA)16 and Zn16Ln(quinHA)16 are preferred for the sensitization of LnIII NIR emission and ηsens values reach 100% for NdIII. Finally, the highest values of QLLn are observed for Zn16Ln(quinHA)16 in the solid state or in CD3OD solutions. With these data at hand, we are now capable of creating MCs with desired properties suitable for NIR optical imaging. We have created a family of ‘encapsulated sandwich’ Zn16Ln(HA)16 metallacrowns and by detailed quantitative analysis demonstrated how the nature of the hydroximate ligand impacts photophysical properties of these complexes.![]()

Abstract
Yb(iii) complexes were synthesised from ligands with a 1,4,7-triazacyclononane (tacn) macrocyclic core. Tacn-based compounds equipped with 2 picolinate arms were more emissive than their tricarboxamide-cyclen analogues carrying the same antenna.

Abstract
EuIII , TbIII , GdIII and YbIII complexes of the nonadentate bispidine derivative L2 (bispidine=3,7-diazabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane) were successfully synthesized and their emission properties studied. The X-ray crystallography reveals full encapsulation by the nonadentate ligand L2 that enforces to all LnIII cations a common highly symmetrical capped square antiprismatic (CSAPR) coordination geometry (pseudo C4v symmetry). The well-resolved identical emission spectra in solid state and in solution confirm equal structures in both media. As therefore expected, this results in long-lived excited states and high emission quantum yields ([EuIII L2 ]+ , H2 O, 298 K, τ=1.51 ms, ϕ=0.35; [TbIII L2 ]+ , H2 O, 298 K, τ=1.95 ms, ϕ=0.68). Together with the very high kinetic and thermodynamic stabilities, these complexes are a possible basis for interesting biological probes.
