Efficiency Conceptualization Model: A Theoretical Method for Predicting the Turnover of Catalysts

In recent times, the theoretical prediction of catalytic efficiency is of utmost urgency. With the advent of density functional theory (DFT), reliable computations can delineate a quantitative aspect of the study. To this state-of-the-art approach, valuable incorporation would be a tool that can acknowledge the efficiency of a catalyst. In the current work, we developed the efficiency conceptualization model (ECM) that utilizes the quantum mechanical tool to achieve efficiency in terms of turnover frequency (TOF). Twenty-six experimentally designed transition metal (TM) water oxidation catalysts were chosen under similar experimental conditions of temperature, pressure, and pH to execute the same. The computations conclude that the Fe-based [Fe(OTf)2(Me2Pytacn)] (MWOC-17) is a highly active catalyst and, therefore, can endure for more time in the catalytic cycle. Our results conclude that the Ir-based catalysts [Cp*Ir(κ2-N,O)X] with MWOC-23: X=Cl; and MWOC-24: X=NO3 report the highest computed turnover numbers (TONs),τ c o m p u t e d T O N 0 ${\tau _{computed\;TON}^0 }$ of 406 and 490 against the highest experimental TONs,τ e x p e r i m e n t a l T O N ${\tau _{experimental\;TON} }$ of 1200 and 2000 respectively, whereas the Co-based [Co(12-TMC)]2+ (MWOC-19) has the lowest TONs (τ c o m p u t e d T O N 0 ${\tau _{computed\;TON}^0 }$ =19, τexperimental TON=16) among the chosen catalysts and thereby successful in corroborating the previous experimental results.

Novel Anion-Doped Cathode Material SrFe1-x Si x O3-δF y for Intermediate-Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

SrFe1-x Si x O3-δF y cathode materials (x = 0.05, 0.1, 0.15; y = 0, 0.1, 0.5) were prepared via a solid-state method. X-ray diffraction results show that the synthesized F doping samples were perovskite structure. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy findings show that F- anions were doped into SrFe1-x Si x O3-δ. Transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy were performed to analyze the microstructure and element distribution in the materials, respectively. Double-layer composite cathode symmetric cells were prepared through a screen printing method. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed that the double-layer composite cathode adhered well to the electrolyte. The doping with F- can increase the coefficient of thermal expansion of SrFe1-x Si x O3-δ. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results indicate that the oxygen transport capacity of the SrFe0.95Si0.05O3-δ material can be improved by doping with F-, but such a method can decrease the oxygen transport capacity of SrFe0.9Si0.1O3-δ. At 800 °C, the peak power density of the single cell supported by an anode and SrFe0.9Si0.1O3-δF0.1 as the cathode reached 388.91 mW/cm2. Thus, the incorporation of F- into SrFe1-x Si x O3-δ cathode materials can improve their electrochemical performance and enable their application as cathode materials for solid-oxide fuel cells.

Exploring the Efficiency of Algerian Kaolinite Clay in the Adsorption of Cr(III) from Aqueous Solutions: Experimental and Computational Insights

The current study comprehensively investigates the adsorption behavior of chromium (Cr(III)) in wastewater using Algerian kaolinite clay. The structural and textural properties of the kaolinite clay are extensively characterized through a range of analytical methods, including XRD, FTIR, SEM-EDS, XPS, laser granulometry, N2 adsorption isotherm, and TGA-DTA. The point of zero charge and zeta potential are also assessed. Chromium adsorption reached equilibrium within five minutes, achieving a maximum removal rate of 99% at pH 5. Adsorption equilibrium is modeled using the Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Elovich, and Dubinin-Radushkevitch equations, with the Langmuir isotherm accurately describing the adsorption process and yielding a maximum adsorption capacity of 8.422 mg/g for Cr(III). Thermodynamic parameters suggest the spontaneous and endothermic nature of Cr(III) sorption, with an activation energy of 26.665 kJ/mol, indicating the importance of diffusion in the sorption process. Furthermore, advanced DFT computations, including COSMO-RS, molecular orbitals, IGM, RDG, and QTAIM analyses, are conducted to elucidate the nature of adsorption, revealing strong binding interactions between Cr(III) ions and the kaolinite surface. The integration of theoretical and experimental data not only enhances the understanding of Cr(III) removal using kaolinite but also demonstrates the effectiveness of this clay adsorbent for wastewater treatment. Furthermore, this study highlights the synergistic application of empirical research and computational modeling in elucidating complex adsorption processes.

Unravelling CO2 Reduction Reaction Intermediates on High Entropy Alloy Catalysts: An Interpretable Machine Learning Approach to Establish Scaling Relations

Establishment of a scaling relation among the reaction intermediates is highly important but very much challenging on complex surfaces, such as surfaces of high entropy alloys (HEAs). Herein, we designed an interpretable machine learning (ML) approach to establish a scaling relation among CO2 reduction reaction (CO2 RR) intermediates adsorbed at the same adsorption site. Local Interpretable Model-Agnostic Explanations (LIME), Accumulated Local Effects (ALE), and Permutation Feature Importance (PFI) are used for the global and local interpretation of the utilized black box models. These methods were successfully applied through an iterative way and validated on CuCoNiZnMg and CuCoNiZnSnbased HEAs data. Finally, we successfully predicted adsorption energies of *H2 CO (MAE: 0.24 eV) and *H3 CO (MAE: 0.23 eV) by using the *HCO training data. Similarly, adsorption energy of *O (MAE: 0.32 eV) is also predicted from *H training data. We believe that our proposed method can shift the paradigm of state-of-the-art ML in catalysis towards better interpretability.

Quantum Mechanical Study of Oxygen Ligands Protonation for the Stable States of the Laccase Active Site

Laccases are enzymes catalyzing the oxidation of a wide range of organic and inorganic substrates accompanied by molecular oxygen reduction to water. Recently, oxygen reduction by laccases has been studied by single-crystal serial X-ray crystallography with increasing absorption doses at subatomic resolution. There were two determined structures corresponding to the reduced and oxidized stable states of the laccase active site. However, the protonation of the oxygen ligands involved cannot be determined even at subatomic resolution. In the present work, the protonation of oxygen ligands in the active site of laccase for the two stable states determined in the X-ray study was explored using quantum mechanical and continuum-electrostatics calculations. This is important for understanding the reaction of the oxygen reduction mechanism in laccases. The high precision of X-ray data at subatomic resolutions allowed us to optimize the quantum mechanical calculations.

Ultrafast photochemistry of a molybdenum carbonyl-nitrosyl complex with a triazacyclononane coligand

Transition metal complexes capable of releasing small molecules such as carbon monoxide and nitric oxide upon photoactivation are versatile tools in various fields of chemistry and biology. In this work, we report on the ultrafast photochemistry of [Mo(CO)₂(NO)(iPr₃tacn)]PF₆ (iPr₃tacn = 1,4,7-triisopropyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane), which was characterized under continuous illumination and with femtosecond UV-pump/UV-probe and UV-pump/MIR-probe spectroscopy, as well as with stationary calculations. The experimental and theoretical results demonstrate that while the photodissociation of one of the two CO ligands upon UV excitation can be inferred both on an ultrafast timescale as well as under exposure times of several minutes, no evidence of NO release is observed under the same conditions. The binding mode of the diatomic ligands is impacted by the electronic excitation, and transient intermediates are observed on a timescale of tens of picoseconds before CO is released from the coordination sphere. Furthermore, based on calculated potential energy scans, we suggest that photolysis of NO could be possible after a subsequent excitation of an electronically excited state with a second laser pulse, or by accessing low-lying excited states that otherwise cannot be directly excited by light.

Dioxygen Binding to all 3d, 4d, and 5d Transition Metals from Coupled-Cluster Theory

Understanding how transition metals bind and activate dioxygen (O₂ ) is limited by experimental and theoretical uncertainties, making accurate quantum mechanical descriptors of interest. Here we report coupled-cluster CCSD(T) energies with large basis sets and vibrational and relativistic corrections for 160 3d, 4d, and 5d metal-O₂ systems. We define four reaction energies (120 in total for the 30 metals) that quantify O-O activation and reveal linear relationships between metal-oxygen and O-O binding energies. The CCSD(T) data can be combined with thermochemical cycles to estimate chemisorption and physisorption energies for each metal from metal oxide embedding energies, in good correlation with atomization enthalpies (R² =0.75). Spin-geometry variations can break the linearities, of interest to circumventing the Sabatier principle. Pt, Pd, Co, and Fe form a distinct group with the weakest O₂ binding. R² up to 0.84 between surface adsorption energies and our energies for MO₂ systems indicate relevance also to real catalytic systems.

Bond dissociation energies of the diatomic late transition metal sulfides: RuS, OsS, CoS, RhS, IrS, and PtS

The spectra of RuS, OsS, CoS, RhS, IrS, and PtS have been recorded near their respective bond dissociation energies using resonant two-photon ionization spectroscopy. The spectra display an abrupt drop to baseline when the bond dissociation energy (BDE) is exceeded. It is argued that spin-orbit and nonadiabatic interactions among the myriad of states that result from the ground and low-lying separated atom limits cause the molecules to predissociate rapidly as soon as the ground separated atom limit is exceeded in energy. Thus, the observed sharp predissociation thresholds are assigned as the 0 K BDEs of the molecules. With this assumption, the BDEs are assigned as follows: 4.071(8) eV (RuS), 4.277(3) eV (OsS), 3.467(5) eV (CoS), 3.611(3) eV (RhS), 4.110(3) eV (IrS), and 4.144(8) eV (PtS). Using thermochemical cycles, the gas-phase enthalpies of formation at 0 K, Δ_fH_{0 K}°, were calculated to be 531.8(4.3) kJ mol^-1 (RuS), 651.2(6.3) kJ mol^-1 (OsS), 365.3(2.2) kJ mol^-1 (CoS), 481.5(2.1) kJ mol^-1 (RhS), 546.7(6.3) kJ mol^-1 (IrS), and 438.9(1.5) kJ mol^-1 (PtS). The ionization energies of RuS, CoS, and RhS were also calculated using data on the BDEs of the associated cations and were found to be 8.39(10) eV (RuS), 8.40(9) eV (CoS), and 8.46(12) eV (RhS). Combining these data with predissociation measurements of other transition metal sulfide BDEs, the periodic trends in the transition metal sulfide BDEs are discussed and the BDEs of the transition metal sulfides are compared to those of the corresponding selenides. The BDEs of the sulfides are found to be 15.4% greater than those of the corresponding sulfides.

Using electronegativity and hardness to test density functionals

Density functional theory (DFT) is used in thousands of papers each year, yet lack of universality reduces DFT's predictive capacity, and functionals may produce energy-density imbalances. The absolute electronegativity (χ) and hardness (η) directly reflect the energy-density relationship via the chemical potential ∂E/∂N and we thus hypothesized that they probe universality. We studied χ and η for atoms Z = 1-36 using 50 diverse functionals covering all major classes. Very few functionals describe both χ and η well. η benefits from error cancellation, whereas χ is marred by error propagation from IP and EA; thus, almost all standard GGA and hybrid functionals display a plateau in the MAE at ∼0.2 eV-0.3 eV for η. In contrast, variable performance for χ indicates problems in describing the chemical potential by DFT. The accuracy and precision of a functional is far from linearly related, yet for a universal functional, we expect linearity. Popular functionals such as B3LYP, PBE, and revPBE perform poorly for both properties. Density sensitivity calculations indicate large density-derived errors as occupation of degenerate p- and d-orbitals causes "non-universality" and large dependency on exact exchange. Thus, we argue that performance for χ for the same systems is a hallmark of an important aspect of universality by probing ∂E/∂N. With this metric, B98, B97-1, PW6B95D3, MN-15, rev-TPSS, HSE06, and APFD are the most "universal" among the tested functionals. B98 and B97-1 are accurate for very diverse metal-ligand bonds, supporting that a balanced description of ∂E/∂N and ∂E²/∂N², via χ and η, is probably a first simple probe of universality.
