Condensed Matter Systems Exposed to Radiation: Multiscale Theory, Simulations, and Experiment

This roadmap reviews the new, highly interdisciplinary research field studying the behavior of condensed matter systems exposed to radiation. The Review highlights several recent advances in the field and provides a roadmap for the development of the field over the next decade. Condensed matter systems exposed to radiation can be inorganic, organic, or biological, finite or infinite, composed of different molecular species or materials, exist in different phases, and operate under different thermodynamic conditions. Many of the key phenomena related to the behavior of irradiated systems are very similar and can be understood based on the same fundamental theoretical principles and computational approaches. The multiscale nature of such phenomena requires the quantitative description of the radiation-induced effects occurring at different spatial and temporal scales, ranging from the atomic to the macroscopic, and the interlinks between such descriptions. The multiscale nature of the effects and the similarity of their manifestation in systems of different origins necessarily bring together different disciplines, such as physics, chemistry, biology, materials science, nanoscience, and biomedical research, demonstrating the numerous interlinks and commonalities between them. This research field is highly relevant to many novel and emerging technologies and medical applications.

Peculiar Differences between Two Copper Complexes Containing Similar Redox-Active Ligands: Density Functional and Multiconfigurational Calculations

Transition metal complexes featuring redox-active ligands often exhibit multiple redox states, influenced by the interplay between the metal center and the ligand. This study delves into the electronic structures of two mononuclear complexes of copper with two similar redox-active urea azine ligands. The ligands differ by the replacement of an NCH3 moiety by an S atom in the ligand backbone. Experimental analysis yields pronounced electronic structural disparities between these complexes, observable in both the solution and solid phases. Conventional quantum chemical methods, such as density functional theory using different functionals (B3LYP, TPSSh, and CAM-B3LYP), remain inadequate to rationalize the observed spectroscopic anomalies. However, a multiconfigurational approach elucidates the disparate behaviors of these complexes. Multireference perturbation theory, based on complete active space self-consistent field computations, identifies Cu(I) in the case of the complex with the NCH3 containing ligands and a state with substantial Cu(II) contributions in the case of the complex with the S atom containing ligands. In contrast, DFT indicates Cu(I) in both scenarios.

Molecular Capacitors: Accessible 6- and 8-Electron Redox Chemistry from Dimeric "Ti(I)" and "Ti(0)" Synthons Supported by Imidazolin-2-Iminato Ligands

Reduction of the diamagnetic Ti(III)/Ti(III) dimer [Cl₂Ti(μ-NIm^Dipp)]₂ (1) (NIm^Dipp = [1,3-bis(Dipp)imidazolin-2-iminato]^-, Dipp = C₆H₃-2,6-ⁱPr₂) with 4 and 6 equiv of KC₈ generates the intramolecularly arene-masked, dinuclear titanium compounds [(μ-N-η⁶-Im^Dipp)Ti]₂ (2) and {[(Et₂O)₂K](μ-N-μ-η⁶:η⁶-Im^Dipp)Ti}₂ (3), respectively, in modest yields. The compounds have been structurally characterized by X-ray crystallographic analysis, and inspection of the bond metrics within the η⁶-coordinated aryl substituent of the bridging imidazolin-2-iminato ligand shows perturbation of the aromatic system most consistent with two-electron reduction of the ring. As such, 2 and 3 can be assigned respectively as possessing metal centers in formal Ti(III)/Ti(III) and Ti(II)/Ti(II) oxidation states. Exploration of their redox chemistry reveal the ability to reduce several substrate equivalents. For instance, treatment of 2 with excess C₈H₈ (COT) forms the novel COT-bridged complex [(Im^DippN)(η⁸-COT)Ti](μ-η²:η³-COT)[Ti(η⁴-COT)(NIm^Dipp)] (4) that dissociates in THF solutions to give mononuclear (Im^DippN)Ti(η⁸-COT)(THF) (5). Addition of COT to 3 yields heterometallic [(Im^DippN)(η⁴-COT)Ti(μ-η⁴:η⁵-COT)K(THF)(μ-η⁶:η⁴-COT)Ti(NIm^Dipp)(μ-η⁴:η⁴-COT)K(THF)₂]_n (6). Compounds 4 and 5 are the products of the 4-electron oxidation of 2, while 6 stands as the 8-electron oxidation product of 3. Reduction of organozides was also explored. Low temperature reaction of 2 with 4 equiv of AdN₃ gives the terminal and bridged imido complex [(Im^DippN)Ti(═NAd)](μ-NAd)₂[Ti(NIm^Dipp)(N₃Ad)] (7) that undergoes intermolecular C-H activation of toluene at room temperature to afford the amido compound [(Im^DippN)Ti(NHAd)](μ-NAd)₂[Ti(C₆H₄Me)(NIm^Dipp)] (8-tol). These complexes are the 6-electron oxidation products of the reaction of 2 with AdN₃. Furthermore, treatment of 3 with 4 equiv of AdN₃ produces the thermally stable Ti(III)/Ti(III) terminal and bridged imido [K(18-crown-6)(THF)₂]{[(Im^DippN)Ti(NAd)](μ-NAd)₂K[Ti(NIm^Dipp)]} (10). Altogether, these reactions firmly establish 2 and 3 as unprecedented Ti(I)/Ti(I) and Ti(0)/Ti(0) synthons with the clear capacity to effect multielectron reductions ranging from 4 to 8 electrons.

Latest News: Reactions of Group 4 Bis(trimethylsilyl)acetylene Metallocene Complexes and Applications of the Obtained Products

Recently published reactions of group 4 metallocene bis(trimethylsilyl)acetylene (btmsa) complexes from the last two years are reviewed. Complexes like Cp'2 Ti(η2 -Me3 SiC2 SiMe3 ) and Cp2 Zr(py)(η2 -Me3 SiC2 SiMe3 ) with Cp' as Cp (cyclopentadienyl) and Cp* (pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) have been considered (py=pyridine). These complexes can liberate a reactive low-valent titanium or zirconium center by dissociation of the ligands and act as ''masked'' MII complexes (M=Ti, Zr). They represent excellent sources for the clean generation of the reactive coordinatively and electronically unsaturated complex fragments [Cp'2 M]. This is the reason why they were used for many synthetic and catalytic reactions during the last years. As an update to several review articles on this topic, this contribution provides an update with recent examples of preparative organometallic and organic chemistry of these complexes, acting as reagents for a wide range of coordinating and coupling reactions. In addition, applications and investigations concerning reaction products derived from this chemistry are mentioned, too.

Redox chemistry of discrete low-valent titanium complexes and low-valent titanium synthons

Titanium is a versatile metal that has important applications in practical synthesis, though this is typically limited to stoichiometric reactions or Lewis acid catalysis. Recently, interest has grown in using titanium and other early-metals for redox catalysis; however, notable limitations exist due to the thermodynamic preference of these metals to adopt high oxidation states. Nonetheless, discrete low-valent titanium (LVT) complexes and their synthons (titanium complexes which chemically behave as LVT sources) are known. Here, we detail the various ligand platforms that are capable of stabilizing LVT compounds and present the redox chemistry of these systems. This includes a discussion of recent developments in the use of LVT synthons for accessing fully reversible oxidative-addition/reductive-elimination reactions.

Electronic Transitions in Different Redox States of Trinuclear 5,6,11,12,17,18-Hexaazatrinaphthylene-Bridged Titanium Complexes: Spectroelectrochemistry and Quantum Chemistry

Multinuclear transition metal complexes bridged by ligands with extended π-electronic systems show a variety of complex electronic transitions and electron transfer reactions. While a systematic understanding of the photochemistry and electrochemistry has been attained for binuclear complexes, much less is known about trinuclear complexes such as hexaphenyl-5,6,11,12,17,18-hexaazatrinaphthylene-tristitanocene [(Cp2 Ti)3 HATN(Ph)6 ]. The voltammogram of [(Cp2 Ti)3 HATN(Ph)6 ] shows six oxidation and three reduction waves. Solution spectra of [(Cp2 Ti)3 HATN(Ph)6 ] and of the electrochemically formed oxidation products show electronic transitions in the UV, visible and the NIR ranges. Density functional theory (DFT) and linear response time-dependent DFT show that the three formally titanium(II) centers transfer an electron to the HATN ligand in the ground state. The optically excited transitions occur exclusively between ligand-centered orbitals. The charged titanium centers only provide an electrostatic frame to the extended π-electronic system. Complete active self-consistent field (CASSCF) calculation on a structurally simplified model compound, which considers the multi-reference character imposed by the three titanium centers, can provide an interpretation of the experimentally observed temperature-dependent magnetic behavior of the different redox states of the title compound in full consistency with the interpretation of the electronic spectra.
