Acoustic Alignment of a Supramolecular Nanofiber in Harmony with the Sound of Music

Sonification of molecular electronic energy density and its dynamics

A method is proposed for sonification of the molecular electronic energy density. The characteristic energetic structures of the individual complicated electronic wavefunctions are extracted in terms of the Energy Natural Orbitals (ENO), which are the eigenfunctions of the electronic energy density operator [K. Takatsuka and Y. Arasaki, J. Chem. Phys., 2021, 154, 094103]. Then, the frequency corresponding to each ENO energy is linearly transformed to the audible range. The time-variation of the population of the ENO serves as the volume (amplitude) of the sound. We demonstrate the sonification and associated voiceprints for a couple of very basic chemical bondings, from across an avoided crossing, and from the bond dissociation of a cluster.

Audible sound-controlled spatiotemporal patterns in out-of-equilibrium systems

Naturally occurring spatiotemporal patterns typically have a predictable pattern design and are reproducible over several cycles. However, the patterns obtained from artificially designed out-of-equilibrium chemical oscillating networks (such as the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction for example) are unpredictable and difficult to control spatiotemporally, albeit reproducible over subsequent cycles. Here, we show that it is possible to generate reproducible spatiotemporal patterns in out-of-equilibrium chemical reactions and self-assembling systems in water in the presence of sound waves, which act as a guiding physical stimulus. Audible sound-induced liquid vibrations control the dissolution of atmospheric gases (such as O₂ and CO₂) in water to generate spatiotemporal chemical patterns in the bulk of the fluid, segregating the solution into spatiotemporal domains having different redox properties or pH values. It further helps us in the organization of transiently formed supramolecular aggregates in a predictable spatiotemporal manner.

Flexible Chirality in Self-Assembled N-Annulated Perylenedicarboxamides

N-annulated perylenedicarboxamides 1-3 form supramolecular polymers with a strong tendency to aggregate. The bundles of fibers formed generate a spontaneous anisotropy that conditions the chiroptical features of the described molecules in solution; a strong linear dichroism effect accompanies the circular dichroism (CD) outcome. There is no influence of the point chirality existing at the side chains of 1 and 2, and these molecules present the same chiroptical features as achiral 3. Mechanical rotary stirring increases the CD response and the sign of the dichroic signal changes with the stirring direction. Theoretical calculations indicate that the self-assembly of 1-3 in helical columnar stacks generates atropisomers by the restricted rotation of the H-bonded benzamide units. Molecular mechanics/molecular dynamics calculations predict a feasible intrastack stereomutation of the helical aggregates due to the rapid rupture/formation of the amide H-bonds. This oscillating helicity, together with the fact that right- and left-handed helices are predicted to be mostly isoenergetic, justifies the negligible contribution of the molecular chirality embedded in the paraffinic side chains of 1 and 2. The reported CD behavior contributes to shed light on the physical processes promoting flexible macroscopic chirality that, in turn, can be utilized for the spectroscopic visualization of torsional flows generated in a vortex.

Dynamism of Stimuli-Responsive Nanohybrids: Environmental Implications

Nanomaterial science and design have shifted from generating single passive nanoparticles to more complex and adaptive multi-component nanohybrids. These adaptive nanohybrids (ANHs) are designed to simultaneously perform multiple functions, while actively responding to the surrounding environment. ANHs are engineered for use as drug delivery carriers, in tissue-engineered templates and scaffolds, adaptive clothing, smart surface coatings, electrical switches and in platforms for diversified functional applications. Such ANHs are composed of carbonaceous, metallic or polymeric materials with stimuli-responsive soft-layer coatings that enable them to perform such switchable functions. Since ANHs are engineered to dynamically transform under different exposure environments, evaluating their environmental behavior will likely require new approaches. Literature on polymer science has established a knowledge core on stimuli-responsive materials. However, translation of such knowledge to environmental health and safety (EHS) of these ANHs has not yet been realized. It is critical to investigate and categorize the potential hazards of ANHs, because exposure in an unintended or shifting environment could present uncertainty in EHS. This article presents a perspective on EHS evaluation of ANHs, proposes a principle to facilitate their identification for environmental evaluation, outlines a stimuli-based classification for ANHs and discusses emerging properties and dynamic aspects for systematic EHS evaluation.
