The Effects of Electronegativity of X and Hybridization of C on the X-C⋅⋅⋅O Interactions: A Statistical Analysis on Tetrel Bonding

Metal-Induced Enhancement of Tetrel Bonding. The Case of C⋅⋅⋅X-IrIII (X=Cl, Br) Tetrel Bond Involving a Methyl Group

In X-ray structures of the isomorphic mer-[IrX3(THT)(CNXyl)2] (X=Cl 1, Br 2; THT=tetrahydrothiophene; Xyl=2,6-Me2C6H3-) complexes, we revealed short intermolecular contacts between the C-atom of an isocyanide methyl group and halide ligands of another molecule. Geometrical consideration of the X-ray data and analysis of appropriate DFT studies allowed the attribution of these contacts to CMe⋅⋅⋅X-IrIII (X=Cl, Br) tetrel bond. Specifically, through the application of DFT calculations and various theoretical models, the presence of tetrel bonding interactions was validated, and the contribution of the CMe⋅⋅⋅X-IrIII interaction was assessed. The reinforcement of the tetrel bond upon the isocyanide coordination to iridium(III) is substantiated by molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) surface calculations. To distinguish the tetrel bonding characteristics of CMe⋅⋅⋅X-IrIII (X=Cl, Br) interactions from conventional hydrogen bonding, we employed multiple computational methodologies, including Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) analysis and Electron Localization Function (ELF) analysis. Additionally, Energy Decomposition Analysis (EDA) was applied to selected model systems to explore the underlying physical nature of these interactions.

Crystal Structure Survey and Theoretical Analysis of Bifurcated Halogen Bonds

The possibility that two Lewis bases can share a single halogen atom within the context of a bifurcated halogen bond (XB) is explored first by a detailed examination of the CSD. Of the more than 22,000 geometries that fit the definition of an XB (with X = Cl, Br, I), less than 2% are bifurcated. There is a heavy weighting of I in such bifurcated arrangements as opposed to Br, which prefers monofurcated bonds. The conversion from mono to bifurcated is associated with a smaller number of short contact distances, as well as a trend toward lesser linearity. The two XBs within a bifurcated system are somewhat symmetrical: the two lengths generally differ by less than 0.05 Å, and the two XB angles are within several degrees of one another. Quantum calculations of model systems reflect the patterns observed in crystals and reinforce the idea that the negative cooperativity within a bifurcated XB weakens and lengthens each individual bond.

Complementary, Cooperative Ditopic Halogen Bonding and Electron Donor-Acceptor π-π Complexation in the Formation of Cocrystals

This study expands and combines concepts from two of our earlier studies. One study reported the complementary halogen bonding and π-π charge transfer complexation observed between isomeric electron rich 4-N,N-dimethylaminophenylethynylpyridines and the electron poor halogen bond donor, 1-(3,5-dinitrophenylethynyl)-2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-iodobenzene while the second study elaborated the ditopic halogen bonding of activated pyrimidines. Leveraging our understanding on the combination of these non-covalent interactions, we describe cocrystallization featuring ditopic halogen bonding and π-stacking. Specifically, red cocrystals are formed between the ditopic electron poor halogen bond donor 1-(3,5-dinitrophenylethynyl)-2,4,6-triflouro-3,5-diiodobenzene and each of electron rich pyrimidines 2- and 5-(4-N,N-dimethyl-aminophenylethynyl)pyrimidine. The X-ray single crystal structures of these cocrystals are described in terms of halogen bonding and electron donor-acceptor π-complexation. Computations confirm that the donor-acceptor π-stacking interactions are consistently stronger than the halogen bonding interactions and that there is cooperativity between π-stacking and halogen bonding in the crystals.

Cooperative Effect of Noncovalent Interactions on Tetrel Bonding in Halogenated Silanes

Tetrel bond, a weak noncovalent interaction between the  σ -hole of a Group IV element (Silicon in our case) and the cloud of an electronegative element (Oxygen in our case) is the focus of current work. The percentage strengthening of tetrel bond has been investigated by optimising 16 binary complexes of halogenated silane and water of general formula SiX n H 4 - n  - H 2 O and 16 ternary complexes, of general formula NaX - SiX n H 4 - n  -H 2 O, where X =F, Cl, Br and I and n = 1, 2, 3 and 4 at various levels of theory defined within the formalism of density functional theory (DFT). With the addition of NaX, tetrel bond between Si and O in SiX n H 4 - n  - H 2 O gets strengthened up to 49%, owing to cooperativity effect exerted by hydrogen bonding between X and H in the ternary complex NaX - SiX n H 4 - n  - H 2 O. In the series of complexes studied here, overall stabilization due to cooperativity lies between 10 kJ/mol to 170 kJ/mol. This large extent of reinforcement due to cooperativity has never been showcased before. The exceptional stabilization and reinforcement owe its genesis to the transformation of the ternary complex into a cluster orchestrated by the H-bonding in most of the cases and covalent bonding in few of the cases.
