Abstract
The impact of benzo[ghi]perylenetriimide (BPTI) dye aggregation on the performance of photoelectrochemical devices was explored, through imide-substitution with either alkyl (BPTI-A, 2-ethylpropyl) or bulky aryl (BPTI-B, 2,6-diisopropylphenyl) moieties, to, respectively, enable or suppress aggregation. While both dyes demonstrated similar monomeric optoelectronic properties in solution, adsorption onto mesoporous SnO2 revealed different behavior, with BPTI-A forming aggregates via π-stacking and BPTI-B demonstrating reduced aggregation in the solid state. BPTI photoanodes were tested in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) before application to dye-sensitized photoelectrochemical cells (DSPECs) for Br2 production (a strong oxidant) coupled to H2 generation (a solar fuel). BPTI-A demonstrated a twofold higher dye loading of the SnO2 surface than BPTI-B, resulting in a fivefold enhancement to both photocurrent and Br2 production. The enhanced output of the photoelectrochemical systems (with respect to dye loading) was attributed to both J- and H- aggregation phenomena in BPTI-A photoanodes that lead to improved light harvesting. Our investigation provides a strategy to exploit self-assembly via aggregation to improve molecular light-harvesting and charge separation properties that can be directly applied to dye-sensitized photoelectrochemical devices.

Abstract
Enantioselective molecular recognition of chiral molecules that lack specific interaction sites for hydrogen bonding or Lewis acid-base interactions remains challenging. Here we introduce the concept of tailored chiral π-surfaces toward the maximization of shape complementarity. As we demonstrate for helicenes it is indeed possible by pure van-der-Waals interactions (π-π interactions and CH-π interactions) to accomplish enantioselective binding. This is shown for a novel benzo[ghi]perylene trisimide (BPTI) receptor whose π-scaffold is contorted into a chiral plane by functionalization with 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol (BINOL). Complexation experiments of enantiopure (P)-BPTI with (P)- and (M)-[6]helicene afforded binding constants of 10 700 M-1 and 550 M-1 , respectively, thereby demonstrating the pronounced enantiodifferentiation by the homochiral π-scaffold of the BPTI host. The enantioselective recognition is even observable by the naked eye due to a specific exciplex-type emission originating from the interacting homochiral π-scaffolds of electron-rich [6]helicene and electron-poor BPTI.

Abstract
Despite the success of thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) materials in steering the next generation of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), effective near infrared (NIR) TADF emitters are still very rare. Here, we present a simple and extremely high electron-deficient compound, 5,6-dicyano[2,1,3]benzothiadiazole (CNBz), as a strong electron-accepting unit to develop a sufficiently strong donor-acceptor (D-A) interaction for NIR emission. End-capping with the electron-donating triphenylamine (TPA) unit created an effective D-A-D type system, giving rise to an efficient NIR TADF emissive molecule (λem =750 nm) with a very small ΔEST of 0.06 eV. The electroluminescent device using this NIR TADF emitter exhibited an excellent performance with a high maximum radiance of 10020 mW Sr-1 m-2 , a maximum EQE of 6.57% and a peak wavelength of 712 nm.

Abstract

We present a workflow
to aid the discovery of new dyes for the
role of a photosensitive unit in the dye-sensitized photo-electrochemical
cells (DS-PECs). New structures are generated in a fully automated
way using the Compound Attachment Tool (CAT) introduced in this work.
These structures are characterized with efficient approximate density
functional theory (DFT) methods, and molecules with favorable optical
properties are suggested for possible further use in DS-PECs. As around
2500 structures are generated in this work, and as we aim for still
larger volumes of compounds to screen in subsequent applications,
we have assessed the reliability of low-cost screening methods and
show that simplified time-dependent density functional theory (sTDDFT)
provides a satisfying accuracy/cost ratio. From the dyes considered,
we propose a set that can be suitable for panchromatic sensitization
of the photoelectrode in DS-PECs to further increase DS-PEC efficiency.

Abstract
The nitro group (NO2) is one of the most common electron-withdrawing groups but it has rarely been used in the design of organic semiconductors (OSCs). Herein, we report the n-type semiconducting behavior of simple fluorenone derivatives functionalized with NO2 and CN groups. While the electron mobilities measured in the thin film field-effect transistors are modest (10-6-10-4 cm2 V-1 s-1), the nitrofluorenone OSCs offer excellent air-stability and remarkable tunability of energy levels via facile modification of the substitution pattern. We study the effect of substituents on the electrochemical properties, molecular and crystal structure, and the charge transport properties of nitrofluorenones to revitalize the underestimated potential of NO2 functionalization in organic electronics.

Abstract
In recent years, the widely explored phenomenon "aggregation-induced emission (AIE)" has played a crucial role in the development of luminescent materials for light-emitting applications. In the same direction, the contribution of its sister concept "AIE switching" has been impressive. In comparison, the application of this concept in the field of biosensing or bioimaging is still in its infancy. Therefore, to shed light into the sensing of bioanalytes, we have developed a new perylenediimide (PDI)-based small fluorescent probe, benzoannulated PDI (Bp(Im)2MA), that selectively detects diamines and biogenic amines (BAs) in solution via an "AIE-switching" phenomenon. The synthesized probe containing the bay-annulated anhydride moiety exhibits strong cyan emission in solution. In the mechanism, we have shown that the terminal free amine group of BAs readily reacts with a highly reactive anhydride moiety, which opens the cyclic anhydride moiety. In the open conformation, the free amine group along with a carboxylate group modulates the polarity of the system strikingly. Because of this induced polarity, the monomer of Bp(Im)2MA-BAs conjugate aggregated in solution, thereby exhibiting a significant change in emission property in solution. This method may also be called a very simple and straightforward "naked eye" detection of BAs in solution, with a nanomolar detection limit. A detailed spectroscopic and microscopic investigation demonstrated the existence of the aggregated state. As the reporter dye also emits strongly in the solid state (yellowish orange), it therefore instantly made vapor-phase detection of BAs feasible. Finally, this vapor-phase detection of BAs by the probe was applied very effectively in the determination of spoilage of raw fish.

Abstract
Here, we introduced benzo[ghi]perylenetriimide (BPTI) derivatives including monomer and twisted dimer (t-BPTI) as an alternative electron-transport layer (ETL) material to replace the commonly used PC61 BM in inverted planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Moreover, the double ETL was applied in our PSCs with structure of glass/ITO/PEDOT:PSS/perovskite/BPTI/C60 or PDI-C4/BCP/Al. The use of a double ETL structure can effectively eliminate the leakage current. The devices with the t-BPTI/C60 double ETL yield an average power conversion efficiency of 10.73 % and a maximum efficiency of 11.63 %. The device based on the complete non-fullerene electron acceptors of t-BPTI/PDI-C4 as double ETL achieved maximum efficiency of 10.0 %. Moreover, it was found that the utilization of alloy t-BPTI+BPTI as ETL can effectively reduce the hysteresis effect of PSCs. The results suggest that BPTI-based electron-transport materials are potential alternatives for widely used fullerene acceptors in PSCs.
