Continuous-Flow Catalysis Using Phosphine-Metal Complexes on Porous Polymers: Designing Ligands, Pores, and Reactors

Continuous-flow syntheses using immobilized catalysts can offer efficient chemical processes with easy separation and purification. Porous polymers have gained significant interests for their applications to catalytic systems in the field of organic chemistry. The porous polymers are recognized for their large surface area, high chemical stability, facile modulation of surface chemistry, and cost-effectiveness. It is crucial to immobilize transition-metal catalysts due to their difficult separation and high toxicity. Supported phosphine ligands represent a noteworthy system for the effective immobilization of metal catalysts and modulation of catalytic properties. Researchers have been actively pursuing strategies involving phosphine-metal complexes supported on porous polymers, aiming for high activities, durabilities, selectivities, and applicability to continuous-flow systems. This review provides a concise overview of phosphine-metal complexes supported on porous polymers for continuous-flow catalytic reactions. Polymer catalysts are categorized based on pore sizes, including micro-, meso-, and macroporous polymers. The characteristics of these porous polymers are explored concerning their efficiency in immobilized catalysis and continuous-flow systems.

Ultramicroporous Polyphenylenes via Diels-Alder Polycondensation Approach

Development of new microporous organic polymers attracts significant attention due to a wide scope of promising applications. In addition, the synthesis of soluble, non-crosslinking polymers of high surface area and uniform microporosity is very challenging, and the methods for soluble microporous polymers formation are rather limited. In this work, we report a new approach to construct porous polyphenylenes which employs the Diels-Alder polycondensation of multifunctional ethynyl-containing monomers of different spatial architecture with bis(cyclopentadienone)s. The resulting polymers were soluble in common organic solvents, and their structure and properties were assessed by NMR, TGA, DSC, and SEC studies. The polymers demonstrated a specific surface area up to 751 m²·g^-1 and ultramicroporous (pore size ≤ 0.6 nm) structure. N₂ and CO₂ adsorption-desorption data revealed that porosity parameters, e.g., specific surface area and pore sizes, can be tuned selectively by varying the type of monomers and reaction conditions.

Gold Nanoparticles Immobilized in Porous Aromatic Frameworks with Abundant Metal Anchoring Sites as Heterogeneous Nanocatalysts

Porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) with rich metal coordination sites are highly effective support materials for gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), which would not only prevent AuNPs agglomeration but also facilitate mass transfer during the catalytic process. In this work, PAF-160, -161, and -162 bearing diphosphine units are synthesized via the Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction to act as efficient platforms for AuNPs immobilization. These PAFs possess high surface areas (up to 655 m2 g-1) together with excellent stabilities, and the different linkage lengths between P centers allow more scattered and accessible sites for gold coordination. In the resultant Au-PAFs, AuNPs with uniform sizes are stabilized dispersedly. The catalytic performances of these Au-PAFs are monitored by the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), and all materials exhibit excellent catalytic activities on the reduction of 4-NP, especially Au-PAF-162 with the apparent rate constant (kapp) up to 0.019 s-1. Additionally, the reductions of various nitroarenes with different functional groups are explored and all Au-PAFs can convert most nitroaromatic derivatives to the corresponding arylamines with high conversions of 99%, in which the reaction mechanism is also proposed. Furthermore, a continuous catalytic device with Au-PAF-160 catalyst is explored, and Au-PAF-160 can convert 1-chloro-4-nitrobenzene, 2,6-dichoronitrobenzene and 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene into the corresponding amines in sequence in the continuous flow catalytic experiments. This work has enriched the variety of porous materials for noble metal immobilization and promotes their applications in heterogeneous catalysis.

Porous organic polymers for CO2 capture, separation and conversion

Porous organic polymers (POPs) have long been considered as prime candidates for carbon dioxide (CO2) capture, separation, and conversion. Especially their permanent porosity, structural tunability, stability and relatively low cost are key factors in such considerations. Whereas heteratom-rich microporous networks as well as their amine impregnation/functionalization have been actively exploited to boost the CO2 affinity of POPs, recently, the focus has shifted to engineering the pore environment, resulting in a new generation of highly microporous POPs rich in heteroatoms and featuring abundant catalytic sites for the capture and conversion of CO2 into value-added products. In this review, we aim to provide key insights into structure-property relationships governing the separation, capture and conversion of CO2 using POPs and highlight recent advances in the field.

Single-Site Iridium Picolinamide Catalyst Immobilized onto Silica for the Hydrogenation of CO2 and the Dehydrogenation of Formic Acid

The development of an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for storing H₂ into CO₂ and releasing it from the produced formic acid, when needed, is a crucial target for overcoming some intrinsic criticalities of green hydrogen exploitation, such as high flammability, low density, and handling. Herein, we report an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for both reactions prepared by immobilizing a molecular iridium organometallic catalyst onto a high-surface mesoporous silica, through a sol–gel methodology. The presence of tailored single-metal catalytic sites, derived by a suitable choice of ligands with desired steric and electronic characteristics, in combination with optimized support features, makes the immobilized catalyst highly active. Furthermore, the information derived from multinuclear DNP-enhanced NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and Ir L₃-edge XAS indicates the formation of cationic iridium sites. It is quite remarkable to note that the immobilized catalyst shows essentially the same catalytic activity as its molecular analogue in the hydrogenation of CO₂. In the reverse reaction of HCOOH dehydrogenation, it is approximately twice less active but has no induction period.

CO2 hydrogenation over functional nanoporous polymers and metal-organic frameworks

CO₂ is one of the major environmental pollutants and its mitigation is attracting huge attention over the years due to continuous increase in this greenhouse gas emission in the atmosphere. Being environmentally hazardous and plentiful presence in nature, CO₂ utilization as C1 resource into fuels and feedstock is very demanding from the green chemistry perspectives. To accomplish this CO₂ utilization issue, functional organic materials like porous organic polymers (POPs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as well as organic-inorganic hybrid materials like metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), having characteristics of large surface area, high thermal stability and tunability in the porous nanostructures play significant role in designing the suitable catalyst for the CO₂ hydrogenation reactions. Although CO₂ hydrogenation is a widely studied and emerging area of research, till date review exclusively focused on designing POPs, COFs and MOFs bearing reactive functional groups is very limited. A thorough literature review on this matter will enrich our knowledge over the CO₂ hydrogenation processes and the catalytic sites responsible for carrying out these chemical transformations. We emphasize recent state-of-the art developments in POPs/COFs/MOFs having unique functionalities and topologies in stabilizing metallic NPs and molecular complexes for the CO₂ reduction reactions. The major differences between MOFs and porous organics are critically summarized in the outlook section with the aim of the future benefit in mitigating CO₂ emission from ambient air.

Highly Efficient and Selective N-Formylation of Amines with CO2 and H2 Catalyzed by Porous Organometallic Polymers

The valorization of carbon dioxide (CO₂ ) to fine chemicals is one of the most promising approaches for CO₂ capture and utilization. Herein we demonstrated a series of porous organometallic polymers could be employed as highly efficient and recyclable catalysts for this purpose. Synergetic effects of specific surface area, iridium content, and CO₂ adsorption capability are crucial to achieve excellent selectivity and yields towards N-formylation of diverse amines with CO₂ and H₂ under mild reaction conditions even at 20 ppm catalyst loading. Density functional theory calculations revealed not only a redox-neutral catalytic pathway but also a new plausible mechanism with the incorporation of the key intermediate formic acid via a proton-relay process. Remarkably, a record turnover number (TON=1.58×10⁶ ) was achieved in the synthesis of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), and the solid catalysts can be reused up to 12 runs, highlighting their practical potential in industry.

Recent Progress in Continuous-Flow Hydrogenation

To achieve a safe, efficient, and sustainable (even fully automated) production for the continuous-flow hydrogenation reactions, which is among the most often used reactions in chemical synthesis, new catalyst types and immobilization methods as well as flow reactors and technologies have been developed over the last years; in addition, these approaches have been combined with new and transformational technologies in other fields such as artificial intelligence. Thus, attention from academic and industry practitioners has increasingly focused on improving the performance of hydrogenation in flow mode by reducing the reaction times, increasing selectivities, and achieve safe operation. This Minireview aims to summarize the most recent research results on this topic with focus on the advantages, current limitations, and future directions of flow chemistry.
