Abstract
Tremendous efforts are put forward to develop novel high-performance electrodes for Na-ion batteries (SIBs) in order to replace commercial Li-ion batteries (LIBs). Graphite, the most versatile anode for LIBs, fails to accommodate Na+ions owing to the poor thermodynamic stability of the binary graphite intercalation compound. This study aims to exfoliate the layers of graphite through a simple mechanical process at different time intervals (1, 5, 10, 20, 40, and 80 h) and examine the potential candidate for Na-storage in the presence of carbonate-based electrolytes. This study reports that ball milling plays a vital role in the performance of the graphite in Na-storage. The graphite exfoliated for 80 h (EG-80h) rendered an excellent reversible capacity of 209 mAh g-1 with coulombic efficiency of >99% after 100 cycles in EC-based electrolyte. In situ impedance analysis is performed to validate the charge storage mechanism and Na-ion kinetics. The performance of EG-80h in a full-cell assembly is evaluated with a carbon-coated Na3V2(PO4)3 cathode, which exhibited an initial capacity of ≈75 mAh g-1 and energy density of 201 Wh kg-1. In addition, the adaptability of the NVPC/EG-80h cell at different temperatures is examined from -10 to 50 °C, displaying excellent performance in both high and low-temperature conditions.

Abstract
The growing global energy demand necessitates the development of renewable energy solutions to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. To efficiently utilize renewable yet intermittent energy sources such as solar and wind power, there is a critical need for large-scale energy storage systems (EES) with high electrochemical performance. While lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been successfully used for EES, the surging demand and price, coupled with limited supply of crucial metals like lithium and cobalt, raised concerns about future sustainability. In this context, potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) have emerged as promising alternatives to commercial LIBs. Leveraging the low cost of potassium resources, abundant natural reserves, and the similar chemical properties of lithium and potassium, PIBs exhibit excellent potassium ion transport kinetics in electrolytes. This review starts from the fundamental principles and structural regulation of PIBs, offering a comprehensive overview of their current research status. It covers cathode materials, anode materials, electrolytes, binders, and separators, combining insights from full battery performance, degradation mechanisms, in situ/ex situ characterization, and theoretical calculations. We anticipate that this review will inspire greater interest in the development of high-efficiency PIBs and pave the way for their future commercial applications.

Abstract
Lithium-ion and post-lithium-ion batteries are important components for building sustainable energy systems. They usually consist of a cathode, an anode, an electrolyte, and a separator. Recently, the use of solid-state materials as electrolytes has received extensive attention. The solid-state electrolyte materials (as well as the electrode materials) have traditionally been overwhelmingly crystalline materials, but amorphous (disordered) materials are gradually emerging as important alternatives because they can increase the number of ion storage sites and diffusion channels, enhance solid-state ion diffusion, tolerate more severe volume changes, and improve reaction activity. To develop superior amorphous battery materials, researchers have conducted a variety of experiments and theoretical simulations. This review highlights the recent advances in using amorphous materials (AMs) for fabricating lithium-ion and post-lithium-ion batteries, focusing on the correlation between material structure and properties (e.g., electrochemical, mechanical, chemical, and thermal ones). We review both the conventional and the emerging characterization methods for analyzing AMs and present the roles of disorder in influencing the performances of various batteries such as those based on lithium, sodium, potassium, and zinc. Finally, we describe the challenges and perspectives for commercializing rechargeable AMs-based batteries.

Abstract
This study reports first-principles predictions as well as experimental synthesis of manganese oxide nanoparticles under different conditions. The theoretical part of the work comprised density functional theory (DFT)-based calculations and first-principles molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The extensive research efforts and the current challenges in enhancing the performance of the lithium-ion battery (LIB) provided motivation to explore the potential of these materials for use as an anode in the battery. The structural analysis of the synthesized samples carried out using X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the tetragonal structure of Mn3O4 on heating at 450 and 550 °C and the cubic structure of Mn2O3 on heating at 650 °C. The structures are found in the form of nanoparticles at 450 and 550 °C, but at 650 °C, the material appeared in the form of a nanoporous structure. Further, we investigated the electrochemical functionality of Mn2O3 and Mn3O4 as anode materials for utilization in LIBs via MD simulations. Based on the investigations of their electrical, structural, diffusion, and storage behavior, the anodic character of Mn2O3 and Mn3O4 is predicted. The findings indicated that 10 lithium atoms adsorb on Mn2O3, whereas 5 lithium atoms adsorb on Mn3O4 when saturation is taken into account. The storage capacities of Mn2O3 and Mn3O4 are estimated to be 1697 and 585 mAh g-1, respectively. The maximum value of lithium insertion voltage per Li in Mn2O3 is 0.93 and 0.22 V in Mn3O4. Further, the diffusion coefficient values are found as 2.69 × 10-9 and 2.65 × 10-10 m2 s-1 for Mn2O3 and Mn3O4, respectively, at 300 K. The climbing image nudged elastic band method (Cl-NEB) was implemented, which revealed activation energy barriers of Li as 0.30 and 0.75 eV for Mn2O3 and Mn3O4, respectively. The findings of the work revealed high specific capacity, low Li diffusion energy barrier, and low open circuit voltage for the Mn2O3-based anode for use in LIBs.

Abstract
Polyanionic material, specifically the NASICON-type material, is considered a promising cathode material for Na-ion batteries (SIBs) because of its stable structure and high operating voltage. Further, it improves the energy density correlated with the well utilization of all Na in the compound. For Na3 V2 (PO4 )2 F3 (NVPF), the extraction of the third Na, reported as the electrochemical inactivated, can be realized at a high voltage region while forming an irreversible tetragonal phase. In this study, we introduce Ti doping to the Na2 VTi(PO4 )2 F3 (NVTPF) material; we reveal that the Ti-doped NVTPF could effectively suppress the irreversible phase transformation, thus successfully harnessing Na in a wide voltage range. Experimental study discloses that the Ti-substituted Na2 VTi(PO4 )2 F3 could take up the Na+ from Amam phase to Cmc21 phase between 1.0 V and 4.8 V reversibly accounting for the 2 Na+ transportation that shows favorable Na+ kinetics and structural stability. Our research provides the strategy to stabilize the polyanion structure upon charging at a high voltage range and inspires the utilization of full sodium in the polyanionic materials, which could be considered as a material design for future conventional applications.

Abstract
Oxygen doping is an effective strategy for constructing high-performance carbon anodes in Na ion batteries; however, current oxygen-doped carbons always exhibit low doping levels and high-defect surfaces, resulting in limited capacity improvement and low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE). Herein, a stainless steel-assisted high-energy ball milling is exploited to achieve high-level oxygen doping (19.33%) in the carbon framework. The doped oxygen atoms exist dominantly in the form of carbon-oxygen double bonds, supplying sufficient Na storage sites through an addition reaction. More importantly, it is unexpected that the random carbon layers on the surface are reconstructed into a quasi-ordered arrangement by robust mechanical force, which is low-defect and favorable for suppressing the formation of thick solid electrolyte interfaces. As such, the obtained carbon presents a large reversible capacity of 363 mAh g-1 with a high ICE up to 83.1%. In addition, owing to the surface-dominated capacity contribution, an ultrafast Na storage is achieved that the capacity remains 139 mAh g-1 under a large current density of 100 A g-1 . Such good Na storage performance, especially outstanding rate capability, has rarely been achieved before.

Abstract
As an anode material for sodium ion batteries (SIBs), carbon materials have attracted people's interest because of their abundant resources, good structural stability and low cost. Among most carbon precursors, pitch is viewed as a promising one because of a higher carbon content, good oxidation reversibility and low cost. However, the pitch-based carbon obtained with direct pyrolysis of pitch displays a high degree of graphitization and small layer spacing, which is unfavorable for the storage of sodium ions. In recent years, with the aid of the development of the nanoengineering process, the storage of sodium ions with pitch-based carbon has been drastically improved. This review article summarizes the recent progress of pitch nanoengineering to obtain the carbon anode for high-performance SIBs, including porous structure adjustment, heteroatom doping, co-carbonization and pre-oxidation. In addition, the merits and demerits of a variety of nanoengineering processes are discussed, and future research directions of pitch-based carbon are prospected.

Abstract
Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) hold great promise owing to the naturally abundant sodium resource and high safety. The research focus of SIBs is usually directed toward electrode materials, while the binder as an important component is rarely investigated. Herein, a cross-linked sodium alginate (SA)/graphene oxide (GO) binder is judiciously designed to serve as a robust artificial interphase on the surface of both anode and cathode of SIBs. Benefiting from the cross-linking continuous network structure as well as the highly hydrophilic nature, the SA-GO binder possesses a large tensile strength of 197.7 Mpa and a high ionic conductivity of 0.136 mS cm-1 , superior to pure SA (93.8 Mpa, 0.025 mS cm-1 ). Moreover, the structural design of SA-GO binder exhibits a strong binding ability to guarantee structural integrity during cycling. To demonstrate its effectiveness, polyanion-type phosphates (e.g., Na3 (VO)2 (PO4 )2 F) and chalcogenides (e.g., MoS2 , VS2 ) are adopted as cathode and anode materials of SIBs, respectively. As compared to traditional binders (e.g., PVDF, SA), electrodes with the SA-GO binder exhibits significantly increased rate capability and cycling stability, such as Na3 (VO)2 (PO4 )2 F (40 C fast-charge, 84% capacity retention after 1000 cycles). This work highlights the role of novel aqueous-based binders in developing next-generation sodium-storage devices.

Abstract
It is significant for saving energy to manufacture superb-property batteries. Carbon is one of the most competitive anode materials in batteries, but it is hard for commercial graphite anodes to meet the increasingly higher energy-storage requirements. Moreover, the price of other better-performing carbon materials (such as graphene) is much higher than graphite, which is not conducive to massive production. Pitch, the cheap by-product in the petroleum and coal industries, has high carbon content and yield, making it possible for commercialization. Developing pitch-based anodes can not only lower raw material costs but also realize the pitch's high value-added utilization. We comprehensively reviewed the latest synthesis strategies of pitch-derived materials and then introduced their application and research progress in lithium, sodium, and potassium ion batteries (LIBs, SIBs, and PIBs). Finally, we summarize and suggest the pitch's development trend for anodes and in other fields.

Abstract
Carbon nanomaterials possessing a high specific surface area, electrical conductivity and chemical stability are promising electrode materials for alkali metal-ion batteries and supercapacitors. In this work, we study nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) obtained by chemical vapor deposition of acetonitrile over the pyrolysis product of calcium tartrate, and activated with a potassium hydroxide melt followed by hydrothermal treatment in an aqueous ammonia solution. Such a two-stage chemical modification leads to an increase in the specific surface area up to 1180 m2 g−1, due to the formation of nanopores 0.6–1.5 nm in size. According to a spectroscopic study, the pore edges are decorated with imine, amine, and amide groups. In sodium-ion batteries, the modified material mNC exhibits a stable reversible gravimetric capacity in the range of 252–160 mA h g−1 at current densities of 0.05–1.00 A g−1, which is higher than the corresponding capacity of 142–96 mA h g−1 for the initial NC sample. In supercapacitors, the mNC demonstrates the highest specific capacitance of 172 F g−1 and 151 F g−1 at 2 V s−1 in 1 M H2SO4 and 6 M KOH electrolytes, respectively. The improvement in the electrochemical performance of mNC is explained by the cumulative contribution of a developed pore structure, which ensures rapid diffusion of ions, and the presence of imine, amine, and amide groups, which enhance binding with sodium ions and react with protons or hydroxyl ions. These findings indicate that hydrogenated nitrogen functional groups grafted to the edges of graphitic domains are responsible for Na+ ion storage sites and surface redox reactions in acidic and alkaline electrolytes, making modified carbon a promising electrode material for electrochemical applications.

Abstract
The enormous complexity of the carbon material family has provoked a phenomenological approach to develop its potential in different applications. Although the electronic, chemical, mechanical, and magnetic properties of carbon materials have been widely discussed based on defect control engineering, there is still a lack of fundamental understanding of the carbon surface chemistry, which leads to many controversial conclusions. Here, by analyzing various defects on carbon surface, some commonly neglected aspects and misunderstandings in this field are pointed out, clarifying how surface chemistry affects the chemical behaviors of carbon in some specific chemical reactions. With this full-scale consideration of the carbon surface chemistry, the behaviors of carbon materials with various functions can be well defined, which is indispensable for their scalable applications. Perspectives on future developments of carbon surface chemistry are also provided to enable practically accessible design of advanced carbon in those applications.
