Highly Selective Photocatalytic Aerobic Oxidation of Methane to Oxygenates with Water over W-doped TiO2

Coupling photocatalytic CO2 reduction and CH3OH oxidation for selective dimethoxymethane production

Currently, conventional dimethoxymethane synthesis methods are environmentally unfriendly. Here, we report a photo-redox catalysis system to generate dimethoxymethane using a silver and tungsten co-modified blue titanium dioxide catalyst (Ag.W-BTO) by coupling CO2 reduction and CH3OH oxidation under mild conditions. The Ag.W-BTO structure and its electron and hole transfer are comprehensively investigated by combining advanced characterizations and theoretical studies. Strikingly, Ag.W-BTO achieve a record photocatalytic activity of 5702.49 µmol g-1 with 92.08% dimethoxymethane selectivity in 9 h of ultraviolet-visible irradiation without sacrificial agents. Systematic isotope labeling experiments, in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transform analysis, and theoretical calculations reveal that the Ag and W species respectively catalyze CO2 conversion to *CH2O and CH3OH oxidation to *CH3O. Subsequently, an asymmetric carbon-oxygen coupling process between these two crucial intermediates produces dimethoxymethane. This work presents a CO2 photocatalytic reduction system for multi-carbon production to meet the objectives of sustainable economic development and carbon neutrality.

Boosting Reactive Oxygen Species Formation Over Pd and VOδ Co-Modified TiO2 for Methane Oxidation into Valuable Oxygenates

Direct photocatalytic methane oxidation into value-added products provides a promising strategy for methane utilization. However, the inefficient generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) partly limits the activation of CH4. Herein, it is reported that Pd and VOδ co-modified TiO2 enables direct and selective methane oxidation into liquid oxygenates in the presence of O2 and H2. Due to the extra ROS production from the in situ formed H2O2, a highly improved yield rate of 5014 µmol g-1 h-1 for liquid oxygenates with a selectivity of 89.3% is achieved over the optimized Pd0.5V0.2-TiO2 catalyst at ambient temperature, which is much better than those (2682 µmol g-1 h-1, 77.8%) without H2. Detailed investigations also demonstrate the synergistic effect between Pd and VOδ species for enhancing the charge carrier separation and transfer, as well as improving the catalytic activity for O2 reduction and H2O2 production.

Steering Photooxidation of Methane to Formic Acid over A Priori Screened Supported Catalysts

Efficient methane photooxidation to formic acid (HCOOH) has emerged as a sustainable approach to simultaneously generate value-added chemicals and harness renewable energy. However, the persistent challenge lies in achieving a high yield and selectivity for HCOOH formation, primarily due to the complexities associated with modulating intermediate conversion and desorption after methane activation. In this study, we employ first-principles calculations as a comprehensive guiding tool and discover that by precisely controlling the O2 activation process on noble metal cocatalysts and the adsorption strength of carbon-containing intermediates on metal oxide supports, one can finely tune the selectivity of methane photooxidation products. Specifically, a bifunctional catalyst comprising Pd nanoparticles and monoclinic WO3 (Pd/WO3) would possess optimal O2 activation kinetics and an intermediate oxidation/desorption barrier, thereby promoting HCOOH formation. As evidenced by experiments, the Pd/WO3 catalyst achieves an exceptional HCOOH yield of 4.67 mmol gcat-1 h-1 with a high selectivity of 62% under full-spectrum light irradiation at room temperature using molecular O2. Notably, these results significantly outperform the state-of-the-art photocatalytic systems operated under identical condition.

Structural Diversity Design, Four Nucleation Methods Growth and Mechanism of 3D Hollow Box TiO2 Nanocrystals with a Temperature-Controlled High (001) Crystal Facets Exposure Ratio

Three-dimensional (3D) hollow box TiO2 nanocrystals with structural diversity have been designed and grown by four nucleation methods, including the acid dissolution denucleation method with Fe2O3 as heterogeneous nucleation, the topological phase transition method, the sonic solvothermal method, and the air atmosphere sintering method with TiOF2 as homogeneous nucleation. Through full morphology analysis and structural characterization, reasonable growth mechanisms of 3D hollow box TiO2 nanocrystals were proposed, including nucleation dissolution, Oswald ripening, and hydrolysis reactions. It was found that the high energy (001) crystal facets exposure ratio was closely correlated with reaction temperature of four nucleation-methods, which even reached 92% for the first time. Under simulated sunlight irradiation, their hydrogen production performance and photocatalytic degradation efficiency on model dye molecules rhodamine B (RhB) and methylene blue (MB) were evaluated, and as-prepared hollow box TiO2 nanocrystals prepared by the sonic solvothermal method exhibited the best photocatalytic performance, with a hydrogen production rate of 93.88 μmol/g/h. Within 70 min, the photocatalytic degradation rates of RhB and MB reached 96.59 and 75.25%, respectively, which were 5.74 and 5.54 times that of P25. Their properties are closely connected with the orderly cubic and hierarchy configuration structure of hollow box TiO2 nanocrystals, which have a high exposure ratio of (001) facet controlled by reaction temperatures, thereby greatly improving the photocatalytic activity. This study provides a classic reference for improving the properties of hollow box TiO2 nanocrystals through structural diversity design and various methods of nanocrystal growth.
