Defects of Metal Halide Perovskites in Photocatalytic Energy Conversion: Friend or Foe?

Photocatalytic solar-to-fuel conversion over metal halide perovskites (MHPs) has recently attracted much attention, while the roles of defects in MHPs are still under debate. Specifically, the mainstream viewpoint is that the defects are detrimental to photocatalytic performance, while some recent studies show that certain types of defects contribute to photoactivity enhancement. However, a systematic summary of why it is contradictory and how the defects in MHPs affect photocatalytic performance is still lacking. In this review, the innovative roles of defects in MHP photocatalysts are highlighted. First, the origins of defects in MHPs are elaborated, followed by clarifying certain benefits of defects in photocatalysts including optical absorption, charge dynamics, and surface reaction. Afterward, the recent progress on defect-related MHP photocatalysis, i.e., CO2 reduction, H2 generation, pollutant degradation, and organic synthesis is systematically discussed and critically appraised, putting emphasis on their beneficial effects. With defects offering peculiar sets of merits and demerits, the personal opinion on the ongoing challenges is concluded and outlining potentially promising opportunities for engineering defects on MHP photocatalysts. This critical review is anticipated to offer a better understanding of the MHP defects and spur some inspiration for designing efficient MHP photocatalysts.

Recent progress of metal halide perovskite materials in heterogeneous photocatalytic organic reactions

Photocatalytic technology is widely regarded as an important way to utilize solar energy and achieve carbon neutrality, which has attracted considerable attentions in various fields over the past decades. Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are recognized as "superstar" materials due to their exceptional photoelectric properties, readily accessible and tunable structure, which made them intensively studied in solar cells, light-emitting diodes, and solar energy conversion fields. Since 2018, increased attention has been focused on applying the MHPs as a heterogeneous visible light photocatalyst in catalyzing organic synthesis reactions. In this review, we present an overview of photocatalytic technology and principles of heterogeneous photocatalysis before delving into the structural characteristics, stability, and classifications of MHPs. We then focus on recent developments of MHPs in photocatalyzing various organic synthesis reactions, such as oxidation, cyclization, C-C coupling etc., based on their classifications and reported reaction types. Finally, we discuss the main limitations and prospects regarding the application of metal halide perovskites in organic synthesis.

New visible-light-driven Bi2MoO6/Cs3Sb2Br9 heterostructure for selective photocatalytic oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde

Herein, new Bi2MoO6/Cs3Sb2Br9 heterostructure (BiMo/CSB) was investigated for the first time as a visible-light-driven photocatalyst for C(sp3)-H bond activation using molecular oxygen as a green oxidant and toluene as a model substrate. The optimized BiMo/CSB photocatalyst exhibited enhanced toluene oxidation activity (2,346 μmol g-1h-1), which was almost two- and five-fold that of pristine CSB (1,165 μmol g-1h-1) and BiMo (482 μmol g-1h-1), respectively. The improved photocatalytic performance was essentially attributed to the formation of staggered band energy lineup in the BiMo/CSB hybrid, which promoted S-scheme charge transfer across the BiMo/CSB heterointerface as supported by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), density functional theoretical (DFT), time-resolve photoluminescence (TRPL), and photoelectrochemical studies. Spin-trapping electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and radical scavenging studies revealed that photoinduced hole, molecular oxygen, and superoxide radical are key active species in this photocatalytic system. The developed BiMo/CSB catalyst provided good selectivity toward benzaldehyde product (94-98 %), presumably due to the inhibiting effect of benzyl alcohol on benzaldehyde oxidation. No significant change in structure and morphology was observed for the spent catalyst, however small negative shift of Sb 3d and Bi 4f binding energy was found suggesting partial reduction of Sb3+ and Bi3+. This work not only provides a new visible-light-driven photocatalyst for C(sp3)-H bond activation but also opens the doors for exploitation of the conversion and functionalization of this inert bond toward the production of high value-added organic chemicals.

Structural Modification Strategies, Interfacial Charge-Carrier Dynamics, and Solar Energy Conversion Applications of Organic-Inorganic Halide Perovskite Photocatalysts

Over the past few decades, organic-inorganic halide perovskites (OIHPs) as novel photocatalyst materials have attracted intensive attention for an impressive variety of photocatalytic applications due to their excellent photophysical (chemical) properties. Regarding practical application and future commercialization, the air-water stability and photocatalytic performance of OIHPs need to be further improved. Accordingly, studying modification strategies and interfacial interaction mechanisms is crucial. In this review, the current progress in the development and photocatalytic fundamentals of OIHPs is summarized. Furthermore, the structural modification strategies of OIHPs, including dimensionality control, heterojunction design, encapsulation techniques, and so on for the enhancement of charge-carrier transfer and the enlargement of long-term stability, are elucidated. Subsequently, the interfacial mechanisms and charge-carrier dynamics of OIHPs during the photocatalytic process are systematically specified and classified via diverse photophysical and electrochemical characterization methods, such as time-resolved photoluminescence measurements, ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements, transient photocurrent densities, and so forth. Eventually, various photocatalytic applications of OIHPs, including hydrogen evolution, CO2 reduction, pollutant degradation, and photocatalytic conversion of organic matter.

Improving the stability of perovskite nanocrystals via SiO2 coating and their applications

Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (LHP NCs) with outstanding optical properties have been regarded as promising alternatives to traditional phosphors for lighting and next-generation display technology. However, the practical applications of LHP NCs are seriously hindered by their poor stability upon exposure to moisture, oxygen, light, and heat. Hence, various strategies have been proposed to solve this issue. In this review, we have focused our attention on improving the stability of LHP NCs via SiO2 coating because it has the advantages of simple operation, less toxicity, and easy repetition. SiO2 coating is classified into four types: (a) in situ hydrolytic coating, (b) mesoporous silica loading, (c) mediated anchoring, and (d) double coating. The potential applications of SiO2-coated LHP NCs in the field of optoelectronics, biology, and catalysis are presented to elucidate the reliability and availability of SiO2 coating. Finally, the future development and challenges in the preparation of SiO2-coated LHP NCs are analyzed in order to promote the commercialization process of LHP NC-related commodities.
