Cigarette smoking and cognitive performance

While some investigations into the relationship between smoking and cognitive performance have reported that smoking facilitates performance, other research has come to the opposite conclusion. A review of the literature suggests that this variance in results may be due to differences among studies in design (comparing smokers only with deprived smokers rather than with non-smokers) and also to differences in task demands. Therefore, performance of smokers having just smoked, matched smokers deprived for a brief period, and also non-smokers was contrasted on a series of tasks which ranged from repetitive and perceptually-bound tasks to complex, dynamic tasks dependent upon long-term memory. It was found that while cigarette smoking had no negative effect upon performance for simple perceptual tasks, smoking was found to exert measurable negative effects upon performance for more complex information processing tasks.

d-Amphetamine enhances memory performance in rats with damage to the fimbria

Rats were preoperatively trained on a 5-unit linear maze and were then subjected to fimbria lesions. The animals were then retested on the same task with one group of rats with fimbria lesions and a control group being injected daily with 0.5 mg/kg d-amphetamine sulfate prior to testing. Lesions significantly impaired postoperative performance of the task, while amphetamine facilitated performance in fimbria lesioned rats. Due to an optimal learning of the task, performance of control animals was not significantly facilitated. These results raise several important issues including the mechanisms of functional recovery after brain lesions and the role of the hippocampal formation in learning and memory.

Measurement of cognitive abilities in senescent animals

The behavioral paradigms used in investigating for differences in the cognitive abilities of young and aged animals are critically reviewed with regard to their power to discriminate between young and aged animals' mental capacity. Irrespective of the kind of task, geronto-behavioral research especially is afflicted with difficulties in controlling motivational and emotional influences on cognitive processes. It is hypothesized-somewhat provocatively-that most of the findings indicating an age-related decline are better attributed to the altered motivational status and/or emotional reactiveness than to impaired cognitive processes of senescent animals. Of the common tasks used in this field, it is concluded that complex mazes and different delayed response tasks seem to represent appropriate paradigms in order to study changed capacities in short- and long-term memory (working- and reference-memory, respectively).
