High predictability of direct competition between marine diatoms under different temperatures and nutrient states

Physiological responses of Humboldt current system diatoms to Fe and Cu co-limitation

Diatoms account for ∼20% of global primary production, often limited by the availability of Fe and other trace nutrients such as Cu. The present study examined the role of both metals in the physiology of two diatoms isolated from the Humboldt Currents System, the centric Chaetoceros c.f. dicipiens and the pennate Nitzschia c.f. draveillensis. Under Fe limitation, a decrease in specific growth rates and sizes of both species was observed, especially in Chaetoceros. However, regarding different photosynthetic parameters, Nitzschia was more impacted. The increase in Cu concentrations improved the physiology of both diatoms, mostly of Chaetoceros. When grown in mixed cultures and under co-limiting conditions, both species remained competive due to morphological advantages (i.e., lower cell size). These results may suggest that the increase of Cu under Fe limitation benefited C. c.f. dicipiens over N. c.f. draveillensis.

Phytoplankton competition and resilience under fluctuating temperature

Environmental variability is an inherent feature of natural systems which complicates predictions of species interactions. Primarily, the complexity in predicting the response of organisms to environmental fluctuations is in part because species' responses to abiotic factors are non-linear, even in stable conditions. Temperature exerts a major control over phytoplankton growth and physiology, yet the influence of thermal fluctuations on growth and competition dynamics is largely unknown. To investigate the limits of coexistence in variable environments, stable mixed cultures with constant species abundance ratios of the marine diatoms, Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Thalassiosira pseudonana, were exposed to different temperature fluctuation regimes (n = 17) under high and low nitrogen (N) conditions. Here we demonstrate that phytoplankton exhibit substantial resilience to temperature variability. The time required to observe a shift in the species abundance ratio decreased with increasing fluctuations, but coexistence of the two model species under high N conditions was disrupted only when amplitudes of temperature fluctuation were high (±8.2°C). N limitation caused the thermal amplitude for disruption of species coexistence to become lower (±5.9°C). Furthermore, once stable conditions were reinstated, the two species differed in their ability to recover from temperature fluctuations. Our findings suggest that despite the expectation of unequal effect of fluctuations on different competitors, cycles in environmental conditions may reduce the rate of species replacement when amplitudes remain below a certain threshold. Beyond these thresholds, competitive exclusion could, however, be accelerated, suggesting that aquatic heatwaves and N availability status are likely to lead to abrupt and unpredictable restructuring of phytoplankton community composition.

Water quality monitoring based on chemometric analysis of high-resolution phytoplankton data measured with flow cytometry

River water is an important source of Dutch drinking water. For this reason, continuous monitoring of river water quality is needed. However, comprehensive chemical analyses with high-resolution gas chromatography [GC]-mass spectrometry [MS]/liquid chromatography [LC]-MS are quite tedious and time consuming; this makes them poorly fit for routine water quality monitoring and, therefore, many pollution events are missed. Phytoplankton are highly sensitive and responsive to toxicity, which makes them highly usable for effect-based water quality monitoring. Flow cytometry can measure the optical properties of phytoplankton every hour, generating a large amount of information-rich data in one year. However, this requires chemometrics, as the resulting fingerprints need to be processed into information about abnormal phytoplankton behaviour. We developed Discriminant Analysis of Multi-Aspect CYtometry (DAMACY) to model the "normal condition" of the phytoplankton community imposed by diurnal, meteorological, and other exogenous influences. DAMACY first describes the cellular variability and distribution of phytoplankton in each measurement using principal component analysis, and then aims to find subtle differences in these phytoplankton distributions that predict normal environmental conditions. Deviations from these normal environmental conditions indicated abnormal phytoplankton behaviour that happened alongside pollution events measured with the GC/MS and LC/MS systems. Thus, our results demonstrate that flow cytometry in combination with chemometrics may be used for an automated hourly assessment of river water quality and as a near real-time early warning for detecting harmful known or unknown contaminants. Finally, both the flow cytometer and the DAMACY algorithm run completely autonomous and only requires maintenance once or twice per year. The warning system results may be uploaded automatically, so that drinking water companies may temporary stop pumping water whenever abnormal phytoplankton behaviour is detected. In the case of prolonged abnormal phytoplankton behaviour, comprehensive analysis may still be used to identify the chemical compound, its origin, and toxicity.

Competition and resource depletion shape the thermal response of population fitness in Aedes aegypti

Mathematical models that incorporate the temperature dependence of lab-measured life history traits are increasingly being used to predict how climatic warming will affect ectotherms, including disease vectors and other arthropods. These temperature-trait relationships are typically measured under laboratory conditions that ignore how conspecific competition in depleting resource environments—a commonly occurring scenario in nature—regulates natural populations. Here, we used laboratory experiments on the mosquito Aedes aegypti, combined with a stage-structured population model, to investigate this issue. We find that intensified larval competition in ecologically-realistic depleting resource environments can significantly diminish the vector’s maximal population-level fitness across the entire temperature range, cause a ~6 °C decrease in the optimal temperature for fitness, and contract its thermal niche width by ~10 °C. Our results provide evidence for the importance of considering intra-specific competition under depleting resources when predicting how arthropod populations will respond to climatic warming.

Phytoplankton mortality in a changing thermal seascape

Predicting spatiotemporal distributions of phytoplankton biomass and community composition heavily relies on experimental studies that document how environmental conditions influence population growth rates. In unicellular phytoplankton, the net population growth rate is the difference between the cell division rate and the death rate. Along with predation and disease, phytoplankton mortality arises from abiotic stress. Although the effect of temperature on the net population growth rate is well understood, studies examining thermally induced death rates in phytoplankton are scarce. We investigated how cell division and death rates of the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum varied within its thermal tolerance limits (thermal niche), and at temperatures just above its upper thermal tolerance limit. We show that death rates were largely independent of temperature when P. tricornutum was grown within its thermal niche, but increased significantly at temperatures that approached or exceeded its upper thermal tolerance limit. Furthermore, the sensitivity of mortality increased with the duration of exposure to heat stress and was affected by the pre-acclimation temperature. Heat waves can be expected to significantly affect phytoplankton mortality episodically. The increasing frequency of heat waves accompanying global warming can be expected to drive changes in phytoplankton community structure due to interspecific variability of thermal niches with potential implications for food web dynamics and biogeochemical cycles.

Temperature fluctuations in a warmer environment: impacts on microbial plankton

Warming can cause changes in the structure and functioning of microbial food webs. Experimental studies quantifying such impacts on microbial plankton have tended to consider constant temperature conditions. However, Jensen's inequality (or the fallacy of the average) recognizes that organism performance under constant conditions is seldom equal to the mean performance under variable conditions, highlighting the need to consider in situ fluctuations over a range of time scales. Here we review some of the available evidence on how warming effects on the abundance, diversity, and metabolism of microbial plankton are altered when temperature fluctuations are considered. We found that fluctuating temperatures may accentuate warming-mediated reductions in phytoplankton evenness and gross photosynthesis while synergistically increasing phytoplankton growth. Also, fluctuating temperatures have been shown to reduce the positive warming effect on cyanobacterial biomass production and recruitment and to reverse a warming effect on cellular nutrient quotas. Other reports have shown that fluctuations in temperature did not alter plankton responses to constant warming. These investigations have mostly focused on a few phytoplankton species (i.e. diatoms and haptophytes) in temperate and marine ecosystems and considered short-term and transient responses. It remains unknown whether the same responses apply to other species and ecosystems and if evolutionary change in thermally varying environments could alter the magnitude and direction of the responses to warming observed over short-term scales. Thus, future research efforts should address the role of fluctuations in environmental drivers. We stress the need to study responses over different biological organization and trophic levels, nutritional modes, temporal scales, and ecosystem types.
