Planktonic equatorial diversity troughs: fact or artifact? Latitudinal diversity gradients in Radiolaria

Out of the extratropics: the evolution of the latitudinal diversity gradient of Cenozoic marine plankton

Many ecological and evolutionary hypotheses have been proposed to explain the latitudinal diversity gradient, i.e. the increase in species richness from the poles to the tropics. Among the evolutionary hypotheses, the 'out of the tropics' (OTT) hypothesis has received considerable attention. The OTT posits that the tropics are both a cradle and source of biodiversity for extratropical regions. To test the generality of the OTT hypothesis, we explored the spatial biodiversity dynamics of unicellular marine plankton over the Cenozoic era (the last 66 Myr). We find large-scale climatic changes during the Cenozoic shaped the diversification and dispersal of marine plankton. Origination was generally more likely in the extratropics and net dispersal was towards the tropics rather than in the opposite direction, especially during the warmer climates of the early Cenozoic. Although migration proportions varied among major plankton groups and climate phases, we provide evidence that the extratropics were a source of tropical microplankton biodiversity over the last 66 Myr.

Global warming is causing a more pronounced dip in marine species richness around the equator

The latitudinal gradient in species richness, with more species in the tropics and richness declining with latitude, is widely known and has been assumed to be stable over recent centuries. We analyzed data on 48,661 marine animal species since 1955, accounting for sampling variation, to assess whether the global latitudinal gradient in species richness is being impacted by climate change. We confirm recent studies that show a slight dip in species richness at the equator. Moreover, richness across latitudinal bands was sensitive to temperature, reaching a plateau or declining above a mean annual sea surface temperature of 20 °C for most taxa. In response, since the 1970s, species richness has declined at the equator relative to an increase at midlatitudes and has shifted north in the northern hemisphere, particularly among pelagic species. This pattern is consistent with the hypothesis that climate change is impacting the latitudinal gradient in marine biodiversity at a global scale. The intensification of the dip in species richness at the equator, especially for pelagic species, suggests that it is already too warm there for some species to survive.

The First Record and Classification of Planktonic Radiolarian (Phylum Retaria) and Phaeodarian (Phylum Cercozoa) in the Eastern Indian Ocean

Samples collected from 44 locations were analyzed by using both light and electron microscopy. Out of 168 taxa, 60 newly recorded species from the groups i.e., Acantharia, Collodaria, Pheodaria, Taxopodida and Polycystinea were recorded for the first time.

Abstract

Siliceous planktonic species of the phyla Retaria and Cercozoa were investigated from the surface to a 200 m depth around the eastern Indian Ocean (80.00°–96.10° E, 10.08° N–6.00° S) during a 2-month cruise (10 April–13 May 2014). These species are commonly referred to as Radiolarians and are found in all of the world’s oceans; however, this is a detailed investigation of the species’ diversity in the eastern Indian Ocean. Samples were collected from the eastern Indian Ocean using a plankton towing net during a vertical haul from 44 sampling stations, which resulted in 168 taxa, including 60 species that were newly recorded in the study area. The main purpose of this work was to identify members of the phyla Retaria and Cercozoa and their distribution in the eastern Indian Ocean. The species’ morphology, identification, notes, and new geographical records are briefly described.

The Horizontal Distribution of Siliceous Planktonic Radiolarian Community in the Eastern Indian Ocean

The plankton radiolarian community was investigated in the spring season during the two-month cruise ‘Shiyan1’ (10 April–13 May 2014) in the Eastern Indian Ocean. This is the first comprehensive plankton tow study to be carried out from 44 sampling stations across the entire area (80.00°–96.10° E, 10.08° N–6.00° S) of the Eastern Indian Ocean. The plankton tow samples were collected from a vertical haul from a depth 200 m to the surface. During the cruise, conductivity–temperature–depth (CTD) measurements were taken of temperature, salinity and chlorophyll a from the surface to 200 m depth. Shannon–Wiener’s diversity index (H’) and the dominance index (Y) were used to analyze community structure. There was a total of 168 plankton species, composed of Acantharia, Phaeodaria, Polycystina, Collodaria and Taxopodida (monospecific—Sticholonche zanclea, Hertwig is the only recognized species). Hence, it included both celestine-based and siliceous organisms, which are also described here for the first time from this region. Total radiolarians ranged from 5 to 5500 ind/m−3, dominated by co-occurrences of Sphaerozoum punctatum and Stichonche zanclea species at the south-equator zone (SEQ)-transect 80° E and equator zone (EQ)-transect Lati-0. The possible environmental variables were tested through RDA analysis; although no result was obtained for the full species dataset, the samples from the equatorial transect related strongly to mixed-layer chlorophyll a concentration and those of a north–south transect to surface silicate concentrations or mixed-layer nitrate were significantly correlated (p < 0.01) to the radiolarian community. Our results indicate that the silicate and chlorophyll-a concentrations are the two major factors affecting the radiolarian distribution along two of the investigated transects (southern equator and equator) in the study area.

Marine plankton show threshold extinction response to Neogene climate change

Ongoing climate change is predicted to trigger major shifts in the geographic distribution of marine plankton species. However, it remains unclear whether species will successfully track optimal habitats to new regions, or face extinction. Here we show that one significant zooplankton group, the radiolaria, underwent a severe decline in high latitude species richness presaged by ecologic reorganization during the late Neogene, a time of amplified polar cooling. We find that the majority (71%) of affected species did not relocate to the warmer low latitudes, but went extinct. This indicates that some plankton species cannot track optimal temperatures on a global scale as assumed by ecologic models; instead, assemblages undergo restructuring and extinction once local environmental thresholds are exceeded. This pattern forewarns profound diversity loss of high latitude radiolaria in the near future, which may have cascading effects on the ocean food web and carbon cycle.

High-latitude records show large diversity losses of marine plankton, such as radiolarians, with historical climate change. Here, Trubovitz et al. present a low-latitude record spanning the last 10 million years, finding that many high-latitude radiolarians did not shift equatorward but instead went extinct.

Radiolarian assemblages in the shelf area of the East China Sea and Yellow Sea and their ecological indication of the Kuroshio Current derivative branches

We analyzed the radiolarian assemblages of 59 surface sediment samples collected from the Yellow Sea and East China Sea of the northwestern Pacific. In the study region, the Kuroshio Current and its derivative branches exerted a crucial impact on radiolarian composition and distribution. Radiolarians in the Yellow Sea shelf showed a quite low abundance as no tests were found in 15 of 25 Yellow Sea samples. Radiolarians in the East China Sea shelf could be divided into three regional groups: the East China Sea north region group, the East China Sea middle region group, and the East China Sea south region group. The results of the redundancy analysis suggested that the Sea Surface Temperature and Sea Surface Salinity were primary environmental variables explaining species-environment relationship. The gradients of temperature, salinity, and species diversity reflect the powerful influence of the Kuroshio Current in the study area.

Mapping knowledge gaps in marine diversity reveals a latitudinal gradient of missing species richness

A reliable description of any spatial pattern in species richness requires accurate knowledge about species geographical distribution. However, sampling bias may generate artefactual absences within species range and compromise our capacity to describe biodiversity patterns. Here, we analysed the spatial distribution of 35,000 marine species (varying from copepods to sharks) to identify missing occurrences (gaps) across their latitudinal range. We find a latitudinal gradient of species absence peaking near the equator, a pattern observed in both shallow and deep waters. The tropical gap in species distribution seems a consequence of reduced sampling effort at low latitudes. Overall, our results suggest that spatial gaps in species distribution are the main cause of the bimodal pattern of marine diversity. Therefore, only increasing sampling effort at low latitudes will reveal if the absence of species in the tropics, and the consequent dip in species richness, are artefacts of sampling bias or a natural phenomenon.

Accurate understanding of species biogeographic patterns is contingent upon adequate sampling effort across space. Here, the authors analyse the distribution records for 35,000 marine species, highlighting data gaps caused by undersampling in the tropics.
