Inert Transition Metal Ion Complexes in Organic Synthesis: Protection and Activation

Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies for a variety of metal ion complexes of functionalised sarcophagines (sarcophagine=sar=3,6,10,13,16,19-hexa-azabicyclo[6.6.6]icosane) have further confirmed not only that the form of the metal ion/sar unit is unique for each metal, albeit with a sensitivity of the conformation to the associated counter anions, but also that for any given metal and ligand substituent, the dimensions (bond lengths and angles) of the complex and the substituent at the secondary nitrogen centres do not differ significantly from those of the isolated components. Despite this, where the substituent contains reactive sites, the reactivity differs markedly from that of their form in an uncoordinated substrate. Rationalisations are offered for these differences, in part through the use of Hirshfeld surface analysis of the intermolecular interactions. The kinetic inertness of the complexes means that the metal ions can be considered to act as regioselective protecting groups.

Spectroelectrochemical Properties and Catalytic Activity in Cyclohexane Oxidation of the Hybrid Zr/Hf-Phthalocyaninate-Capped Nickel(II) and Iron(II) tris-Pyridineoximates and Their Precursors

The in situ spectroelectrochemical cyclic voltammetric studies of the antimony-monocapped nickel(II) and iron(II) tris-pyridineoximates with a labile triethylantimony cross-linking group and Zr(IV)/Hf(IV) phthalocyaninate complexes were performed in order to understand the nature of the redox events in the molecules of heterodinuclear zirconium(IV) and hafnium(IV) phthalocyaninate-capped derivatives. Electronic structures of their 1e-oxidized and 1e-electron-reduced forms were experimentally studied by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and UV−vis−near-IR spectroelectrochemical experiments and supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The investigated hybrid molecular systems that combine a transition metal (pseudo)clathrochelate and a Zr/Hf-phthalocyaninate moiety exhibit quite rich redox activity both in the cathodic and in the anodic region. These binuclear compounds and their precursors were tested as potential catalysts in oxidation reactions of cyclohexane and the results are discussed.

The role of coordination chemistry in the development of copper and rhenium radiopharmaceuticals

There are several isotopes of copper and rhenium that are of interest in the development of new molecular imaging or radiotherapeutic agents. This perspective article highlights the role of coordination chemistry in the design of copper and rhenium radiopharmaceuticals engineered to selectively target tissue of interest such as cancer cells or pathological features associated with Alzheimer's disease. The coordination chemistry of copper bis(thiosemicarbazone) derivatives and copper macrocyclic complexes is discussed in terms of their potential application as targeted positron emission tomography tracers for non-invasive diagnostic imaging. A range of rhenium complexes with different ligands with rhenium in different oxidation states are introduced and their potential to be translated to new radiotherapeutic agents discussed.

Dependence of the Properties of Cobalt(III) Cage Complex as a Function of the Derivatization of Amine Substituents

Control of redox properties of cobalt macrobicyclic hexaamine (cage) complexes by substituent modification is important for their use as electron-transfer agents, and the resultant derivatives can also change the lipophilicity of the complexes for a variety of biological and other applications. Such derivatization is also important for incorporating cage complexes into a range of redoxactive conjugates. Here, the derivatization of the amine groups in the 1 and 8 positions of [Co(sar)]3+ (sar = sarcophagine = 3,6,10,13,16,19-hexaazabicyclo[6.6.6]icosane) are reported. The synthesis and properties of methylamide (from the reactions with acetic anhydride), arylimine (from Schiff base reactions), benzylamine, phthalimido, and tosylate derivatives are described. These reactions provide synthons that have the potential to act as precursors for building a range of conjugates containing metal cage complexes, including dimers. The effects of the substituents on the ligand conformations, which affect other chemical and physical properties of the cage complexes, are discussed.

Variations on a Cage Theme: Some Complexes of Bicyclic Polyamines as Supramolecular Synthons

Dedication: One of Alan Sargeson’s great abilities was to seek out knowledge on topics of which he was not the master from those people with the expertise. This led occasionally to publications with a ‘cricket team’ of authors but with a rich brew of information, often international. Alan also insisted that all authors were equal since, without any one, the paper would not be what it was. Hence, he endeavoured to pursue the policy, difficult to maintain over a period where an obsession with absurdities such as the order of authors and point-scoring based on meaningless publication indices became so important in the maintenance of research, of listing authors simply in alphabetical order. In describing work begun while he was still with us, we have attempted to adhere to his principles. Analysis of a body of crystallographic information concerning metal(ii) and metal(iii) complexes of macrobicyclic hexamine ligands and some of their derivatives provides evidence for the action of a variety of intermolecular forces within the lattices. Hydrogen bonding is universal and its forms depend strongly upon the oxidation state and the particular nature of the metal ion bound to the macrobicycle. The introduction of both aliphatic and aromatic substituents leads to lattices in which these substituents associate, although, in the case of aromatic substituents, this is not necessarily a consequence of ‘π-stacking’, despite the fact that the aromatic ring planes form parallel arrays. At least in the case of CoIII, stable enantiomers of the complexes can be obtained, and in {Δ-(+)589-[Co{(NH3)(CH3)sar}]}2Cl2(C6(CO2)6)·26H2O (sar = 3,6,10,13,16,19-hexa-azabicyclo[6.6.6]icosane), the benzene hexacarboxylate anion adopts a chiral conformation in the presence of the optically active cation.
