Abstract
We report the synthesis and characterization of two types of new mixed-ligand rare earth complexes: tetracoordinate (NacNacMes)Ln(BIANdipp) (Ln = Dy (1), Er (2) and Y (3)) and pentacoordinate (NacNacMes)Ln(APdipp)(THF) (Ln = Dy (4), Er (5) and Y (6)). The first three compounds were prepared by the reaction of [(BIANDipp)LnI] with potassium β-diketiminate. The salt metathesis of β-diketiminato-supported rare earth dichlorides (NacNacMes)LnCl2(THF)2 with sodium o-amidophenolate results in compounds 4-6. The crystal structures of complexes 1-6 were determined by single-crystal analysis. The combination of bulky monoanionic N-mesityl-substituted β-diketiminates with sterically hindered redox-active ligands led to the very low coordination numbers of rare earths and strong distortion of the chelate ligands.

Abstract
The reactions of 2-imino-2,3-dihydrobenzoxazole LH with M[N(SiMe3)2]2(THF)2 (M = Yb and Ca) and Y(CH2SiMe3)3(THF)2 proceed with the opening of the dihydrobenzoxazole ring and the elimination of HN(SiMe3)2 or SiMe4. Besides, in the case of Yb[N(SiMe3)2]2(THF)2, an electron transfer from Yb(II) to L takes place and Yb(III) complex 1 is coordinated by a dianionic phenolate ligand containing a pendant radical-anionic diazabutadiene fragment form. When LH is reacted with Ca[N(SiMe3)2]2(THF)2, C-H bond activation of a methyl fragment by imino nitrogen occurs and affords a dimeric calcium complex 2. In 2, the phenolate ligand is dianionic due to the presence of the amido-imino fragment [R-NC(CH3)-C(CH2)-NR']- (R = 2,4-tBu2-C6H2O; R' = 2,6-iPr2C6H3). In situ generated ate-complex {Na(Et2O)n}{Ca[N(SiMe3)2]3} also enables C-H bond activation, however the dianionic phenolate ligand in the resulting complex 3 contains an amido-imino fragment [R-N-C(CH2)-C(CH3)NR']- featuring the sequence of N-C and NC bonds opposite to that in 2. The reaction of Y(CH2SiMe3)3(THF)2 with LH affords mono(alkyl) yttrium complex 4. 4 contains a dianionic amido-imino phenolate ligand resulting from the migration of one alkyl group to the CN bond [R-N-C(Me)(CH2SiMe3)-C(Me)NR']. 4 undergoes slow intramolecular C-H bond activation of the residual CH3 group to afford a yttrium complex coordinated by a trianionic diamido-phenolate ligand [R-N-C(Me)(CH2SiMe3)-C(CH2)NR'].

Abstract
New kinds of diradical rare-earth metal complexes supported by diazabutadiene (DAD) ligands, [(DAD)2LnN(TMS)2] (1; Ln = Dy, Lu; TMS = SiMe3), were synthesized and studied. They showed a new [radical-Ln-radical] alignment with distorted square-pyramidal geometry. Structural and density functional theory analysis illustrated the radical anionic nature of the ligands. Magnetic studies revealed antiferromagnetic coupling of the two radicals in 1-Lu. 1-Dy showed typical single-molecule-magnet (SMM) behavior with an effective energy barrier of 231 K, which is much higher than those of similar radical-containing SMMs. Magnetostructural analysis suggests that the anionic [N(TMS)2]- group plays a vital role in the SMM property. This study provides a new platform for further improving the performance of radical-Ln SMMs.

Abstract
The first rubidium and cesium enediamide complexes based on bulky 1,4-diaza-1,3-diene ligands (DADs) have been prepared by metalation of either 1,4-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-1,4-diaza-1,3-butadiene (1, = H2DADDipp) or 1,4-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-2,3-dimethyl-1,4-diaza-1,3-butadiene (2, = Me2DADDipp) with an excess of Rb or Cs metals in coordinating solvents such as tetrahydrofuran (THF) or 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME). All new complexes were fully characterized by spectroscopic and analytical methods as well as single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies.

Abstract
Complexes of divalent ytterbium (1) and europium (2) with a dianionic o-amidophenolate ligand were prepared by both the direct reduction of 4,6-di-tert-butyl-N-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-o-iminobenzoquinone (dpp-IQ) and the salt metathesis reaction of potassium o-amidophenolate with LnI2 (Ln = Yb, Eu). Oxidation of o-amidophenolates 1, 2 with one equivalent of dpp-IQ as well as the salt metathesis reaction of potassium o-iminosemiquinolate with LnI2 afforded ligand mixed-valent o-iminosemiquinonato-amidophenolato complexes of trivalent ytterbium (3) and europium (4). All novel complexes 1-4 were fully characterized, including the solid state structures of 1 and 2 determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The magnetic properties of paramagnetic 2-4 were examined.

In contrast the reaction of related ytterbium complex (dpp-Bian)YbII(dme)2 (4) with bipy in dme proceeds with the electron transfer from the metal to bipy and results in (dpp-Bian)YbIII(bipy)(bipy-̇) (10) - ytterbium(III) derivative containing both neutral and radical-anionic bipy ligands. Noteworthy, in both cases dianionic dpp-Bian ligands retain its reduction state. The ligand-centered redox-process occurs when complex 3 reacts with N,N'-bis[2,4,6-trimethylphenyl]-1,4-diaza-1,3-butadiene (mes-dad). The reaction product (dpp-Bian)EuII(mes-dad)(dme) (11) consists of two different redox-active ligands both in the radical-anionic state. The reduction of 3,6-di-tert-butyl-4-(3,6-di-tert-butyl-2-ethoxyphenoxy)-2-ethoxycyclohexa-2,5-dienone (the dimer of 2-ethoxy-3,6-di-tert-butylphenoxy radical) with (dpp-Bian)EuII(dme)2 (3) caused oxidation of the dpp-Bian ligand to radical-anion to afford (dpp-Bian)(ArO)EuII(dme) (ArO = OC6H2-3,6-tBu2-2-OEt) (12). The molecular structures of complexes 9-12 have been established by the single crystal X-ray analysis. The magnetic behavior of newly prepared compounds has been investigated by the SQUID technique in the range 2-310 K. The isotropic exchange model has been adopted to describe quantitatively the magnetic properties of the exchange-coupled europium(II) complexes (11 and 12). The best-fit isotropic exchange parameters are in good agreement with their density functional theory-computed counterparts.

Metallacyclic yttrium alkyl and hydrido complexes: synthesis, structures and catalytic activity in intermolecular olefin hydrophosphination and hydroamination. Dalton Trans 2015; 44:12137-48. Abstract
Metallacyclic neutral and ionic yttrium alkyl complexes coordinated by a dianionic ene-diamido ligand ([2,6-iPr2C6H3NC(Me)=C(Me)NC6H3iPr2-2,6] = L(1)) [L(1)]Y(CH2SiMe3)(THF)2 (2), {[L(1)]Y(CH2SiMe3)2}(-){Li(THF)4}(+) (3), [L(1)]Y(OEt2)(μ-Me)2Li(TMEDA) (4) were synthesized using a salt-metathesis approach starting from the related chloro complex [L(1)]Y(THF)2(μ-Cl)2Li(THF)2 (1) in 70, 85 and 72% yields respectively. The reactions of 2 with H2 or PhSiH3 afford the dimeric hydride {[L(1)]Y(THF)(μ-H)}2(μ-THF) (5) containing two μ-bridging hydrido and one μ-bridging THF ligands (91 and 85% yields). The X-ray studies of complexes 2, 3 and 5 revealed η(2)-coordination of the C=C fragment of an ene-diamido ligand to a Y cation. DFT calculations were carried out to give an insight into the metal-ligand bonding and especially the interaction between the metal and the ene-diamido ligand. The observed bonding of the ene-diamido fragment is found to reflect the acidity of the metal center in the complex that is partially overcome by a better donation from the double bond (better overlap with an empty d orbital at the yttrium center). The treatment of complex 4 with DME resulted in the C-O bond cleavage of DME and afforded a three nuclear methoxide oxide complex [{[L(1)]Y}3(μ(2)-OMe)3(μ(3)-O)](2-)[Li(DME)3](+)2 (6). Complexes 2, 3, 5 and 7 proved to be efficient precatalysts for the intermolecular hydrophosphination of styrene, 4-vinylpyridine, and 1-nonene with PhPH2 and Ph2PH as well as hydroamination of styrene and pyrrolidine.

Abstract
The electronic structure and associated magnetic properties of the 1,10-phenanthroline adducts of Cp*2Yb are dramatically different from those of the 2,2'-bipyridine adducts. The monomeric phenanthroline adducts are ground state triplets that are based upon trivalent Yb(III), f(13), and (phen(•-) ) that are only weakly exchange coupled, which is in contrast to the bipyridine adducts whose ground states are multiconfigurational, open-shell singlets in which ytterbium is intermediate valent ( J. Am. Chem. Soc 2009 , 131 , 6480 ; J. Am. Chem. Soc 2010 , 132 , 17537 ). The origin of these different physical properties is traced to the number and symmetry of the LUMO and LUMO+1 of the heterocyclic diimine ligands. The bipy(•-) has only one π*1 orbital of b1 symmetry of accessible energy, but phen(•-) has two π* orbitals of b1 and a2 symmetry that are energetically accessible. The carbon pπ-orbitals have different nodal properties and coefficients and their energies, and therefore their populations change depending on the position and number of methyl substitutions on the ring. A chemical ramification of the change in electronic structure is that Cp*2Yb(phen) is a dimer when crystallized from toluene solution, but a monomer when sublimed at 180-190 °C. When 3,8-Me2phenanthroline is used, the adduct Cp*2Yb(3,8-Me2phen) exists in the solution in a dimer-monomer equilibrium in which ΔG is near zero. The adducts with 3-Me, 4-Me, 5-Me, 3,8-Me2, and 5,6-Me2-phenanthroline are isolated and characterized by solid state X-ray crystallography, magnetic susceptibility and LIII-edge XANES spectroscopy as a function of temperature and variable-temperature (1)H NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract
Metathesis reactions of YbI(2) with Li(2)L (L = Me(3)SiN(Ph)CN(CH(2))(3)NC(Ph)NSiMe(3)) in THF at a molar ratio of 1:1 and 1:2 both afforded the Yb(II) iodide complex [{YbI(DME)(2)}(2)(μ(2)-L)] (1), which was structurally characterized to be a dinuclear Yb(II) complex with a bridged L ligand. Treatment of EuI(2) with Li(2)L did not afford the analogous [{EuI(DME)(2)}(2)(μ(2)-L)], or another isolable Eu(II) complex, but the hexanuclear heterobimetallic cluster [{Li(DME)(3)}(+)](2)[{(EuI)(2)(μ(2)-I)(2)(μ(3)-L)(2)(Li)(4)}(μ(6)-O)](2-) (2) was isolated as a byproduct in a trace yield. The rational synthesis of cluster 2 could be realized by the reaction of EuI(2) with Li(2)L and H(2)O in a molar ratio of 1:1.5:0.5. The reduction reaction of LLnCl(THF)(2) (Ln = Yb and Eu) with Na/K alloy in THF gave the corresponding Ln(II) complexes [Yb(3)(μ(2)-L)(3)] (3) and [Eu(μ(2)-L)(THF)](2) (4) in good yields. An X-ray crystal structure analysis revealed that each L in complex 3 might adopt a chelating ligand bonding to one Yb atom and each Yb atom coordinates to an additional amidinate group of the other L and acts as a bridging link to assemble a macrocyclic structure. Complex 4 is a dimer in which the two monomers [Eu(μ(2)-L)(THF)] are connected by two μ(2)-amidinate groups from the two L ligands. Complex 3 reacted with CyN═C═NCy and diazabutadienes [2,6-(i)Pr(2)C(6)H(3)N═CRCR═NC(6)H(3)(i)Pr(2)-2,6] (R═H, CH(3)) (DAD) as a one-electron reducing agent to afford the corresponding Yb(III) derivatives: the complex with an oxalamidinate ligand [LYb{(NCy)(2)CC(NCy)(2)}YbL] (5) and the complexes containing a diazabutadiene radical anion [LYb((i)Pr(2)C(6)H(3)NCRCRNC(6)H(3)(i)Pr(2))] (R = H (6), R = CH(3) (7)). Complexes 5-7 were confirmed by an X-ray structure determination.
