Trinuclear coordination assemblies of low-spin dicyano manganese(II) (S = 1/2) and iron(II) (S = 0) phthalocyanines with manganese(II) acetylacetonate, tris(cyclopentadienyl)gadolinium(III) and neodymium(III)

The reaction of Mn^IIPc, Fe^IIPc or Fe^IIPcCl₁₆ with KCN in the presence of cryptand[2.2.2] yielded dicyano-complexes {cryptand(K⁺)}₂{M^II(CN)₂(macrocycle^2-)}^2-·XC₆H₄Cl₂ (M = Mn and Fe, X = 1 and 2) that were used for the preparation of trinuclear assemblies of the general formula {cryptand(K⁺)}₂{M^II(CN)₂Pc·(ML)₂}^2-·nC₆H₄Cl₂ (M^II = Mn^II and Fe^II; n = 1, 4 and 5). These assemblies were formed via coordination of two manganese(II) acetylacetonate (ML = Mn^II(acac)₂, S = 5/2), tris(cyclopentadienyl)gadolinium (ML = Cp₃Gd^III, S = 7/2) or tris(cyclopentadienyl)neodymium (ML = Cp₃Nd^III, S = 3/2) units to the nitrogen atoms of bidentate cyano ligands. The N(CN)-Mn{Mn^II(acac)₂} bond is 2.129(3) Å long but the bonds are elongated to 2.43-2.49 Å for tris(cyclopentadienyl)lanthanides. {Cryptand(K⁺)}₂{Mn^II(CN)₂Pc·(Mn^II(acac)₂)₂}^2-·5C₆H₄Cl₂ (2) contains three Mn(II) ions in different spin states (S = 5/2 and 1/2). Strong antiferromagnetic coupling of spins observed between them with the exchange interaction (J) of -17.6 cm^-1 enables the formation of a high S = 9/2 spin state for {Mn^II(CN)₂Pc·(Mn^II(acac)₂)₂}^2- dianions at 2 K. The estimated exchange interaction between Mn^II (S = 1/2) and Gd^III (S = 7/2) spins in {Mn^II(CN)₂Pc·(Cp₃Gd^III)₂}^2- is only -1.1 cm^-1, and in contrast to 2, nearly independent Gd^III and Mn^II centers are formed. As a result, no transition to the high-spin state is observed in {Mn^II(CN)₂Pc·(Cp₃Gd^III)₂}^2-. The {Mn^II(CN)₂Pc·(Cp₃Nd^III)₂}^2- and{Fe^II(CN)₂Pc·(Cp₃Nd^III)₂}^2- dianions with Cp₃Nd^III show a decrease of χ_MT values in the whole studied temperature range (300-1.9 K). A similar behaviour was found previously for pristine Cp₃Nd^III and Cp₃Nd^III·L complexes (L = alkylisocyanide ligand).

Lanthanide-tetrapyrrole complexes: synthesis, redox chemistry, photophysical properties, and photonic applications

Tetrapyrrole derivatives such as porphyrins, phthalocyanines, naphthalocyanines, and porpholactones, are highly stable macrocyclic compounds that play important roles in many phenomena linked to the development of life. Their complexes with lanthanides are known for more than 60 years and present breath-taking properties such as a range of easily accessible redox states leading to photo- and electro-chromism, paramagnetism, large non-linear optical parameters, and remarkable light emission in the visible and near-infrared (NIR) ranges. They are at the centre of many applications with an increasing focus on their ability to generate singlet oxygen for photodynamic therapy coupled with bioimaging and biosensing properties. This review first describes the synthetic paths leading to lanthanide-tetrapyrrole complexes together with their structures. The initial synthetic protocols were plagued by low yields and long reaction times; they have now been replaced with much more efficient and faster routes, thanks to the stunning advances in synthetic organic chemistry, so that quite complex multinuclear edifices are presently routinely obtained. Aspects such as redox properties, sensitization of NIR-emitting lanthanide ions, and non-linear optical properties are then presented. The spectacular improvements in the quantum yield and brightness of Yb^III-containing tetrapyrrole complexes achieved in the past five years are representative of the vitality of the field and open welcome opportunities for the bio-applications described in the last section. Perspectives for the field are vast and exciting as new derivatizations of the macrocycles may lead to sensitization of other Ln^III NIR-emitting ions with luminescence in the NIR-II and NIR-III biological windows, while conjugation with peptides and aptamers opens the way for lanthanide-tetrapyrrole theranostics.

Phthalocyanine-polyoxotungstate lanthanide double deckers

Two archetypal tetradentate ligands with square donor patterns, namely phthalocyanate and monolacunary Keggin-type polyoxotungstate, coordinate to rare earth ions to yield C_s-symmetric heteroleptic double-decker complexes.

BODIPY-functionalized 1,10-phenanthroline as a long wavelength sensitizer for near-infrared emission of the ytterbium(iii) ion

Two BODIPY (4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene) moieties were chemically appended to the 4,7-positions of 1,10-phenanhtroline resulting in two new ligands (BODIPY-Phen and 4I-BODIPY-Phen) with strong absorption at 507 nm and 540 nm, respectively. BODIPY-Phen emits fluorescence strongly centered at 507 nm, whereas the fluorescence of 4I-BODIPY-Phen was completely quenched due to the introduction of four I atoms at its 2,6 positions. The two ligands reacted readily with tris(1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedionate) ytterbium(iii) dihydrate through substitution reactions forming eight-coordinate complexes that emit strongly at 976 nm upon excitation at their absorption maximal positions. Both complexes exhibited a lifetime of ∼11 μs in dichloromethane at room temperature.

Effects of peripheral substitutions on the singlet oxygen quantum yields of monophthalocyaninato ytterbium(iii) complexes

A new monophthalocyaninato ytterbium(iii) complex5has been prepared and characterized. The effects of substituents on the relative singlet oxygen quantum yields of monophthalocyaninato ytterbium(iii) complexes have been investigated.

Syntheses, structures, and magnetic properties of seven-coordinate lanthanide porphyrinate or phthalocyaninate complexes with Kläui's tripodal ligand

A series of seven-coordinate mononuclear lanthanide(III) complexes of the general formula [(TPP)Ln(L(OEt))]·0.25H2O and [(Pc)Ln(L(OEt))] (Ln(3+) = Dy(3+), Tb(3+), Ho(3+), and Gd(3+); TPP = 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrinate; Pc = phthalocyaninate; L(OEt)(-) = [(η(5)-C5H5)Co(P(=O)(OEt)2)3](-)) are synthesized on the basis of the tripodal ligand L(OEt)(-) and either porphyrin or phthalocyanine ligands. All of the complexes are characterized by X-ray crystallography and by static and dynamic magnetic measurements. The Dy and Tb complexes show the field-induced slow relaxation of magnetization, and they are interesting seven-coordinate single-lanthanide-based SMMs. The magnetic relaxation properties of these double-decker sandwich complexes are influenced by the local molecular symmetry and are sensitive to subtle distortions of the coordination geometry of the paramagnetic lanthanide ions, such as metal-to-plane distances, plane center distances, and bending angles.

Acetylene bridged porphyrin-monophthalocyaninato ytterbium(III) hybrids with strong two-photon absorption and high singlet oxygen quantum yield

Several acetylene bridged porphyrin-monophthalocyaninato ytterbium(III) hybrids, PZn-PcYb, PH(2)-PcYb and PPd-PcYb, have been prepared and characterized by (1)H and (31)P NMR, mass spectrometry, and UV-vis spectroscopy. Their photophysical and photochemical properties, especially the relative singlet oxygen ((1)O(2)) quantum yields and the two-photon absorption cross-section (σ(2)), were investigated. These three newly synthesized compounds exhibited very large σ(2) values and substantial (1)O(2) quantum yields upon photo-excitation, making them potential candidates as one- and two-photon photodynamic therapeutic agents.
