Abstract
The Zr-monosubstituted Keggin-type dimeric phosphotungstate (Bu4N)8[{PW11O39Zr(μ-OH)(H2O)}2] (1) efficiently catalyzes epoxidation of C═C bonds in various kinds of alkenes, including terminal ones, with aqueous H2O2 as oxidant. Less sterically hindered double bonds are preferably epoxidized despite their lower nucleophilicity. Basic additives (Bu4NOH) in the amount of 1 equiv per dimer 1 suppress H2O2 unproductive decomposition, increase substrate conversion, improve yield of heterolytic oxidation products and oxidant utilization efficiency, and also affect regioselectivity of epoxidation, enhancing oxygen transfer to sterically hindered electron-rich C═C bonds. Acid additives produce a reverse effect on the substrate conversion and H2O2 efficiency. The reaction mechanism was explored using a range of test substrates, kinetic, and spectroscopic tools. The opposite effects of acid and base additives on alkene epoxidation and H2O2 degradation have been rationalized in terms of their impact on hydrolysis of 1 to form monomeric species, [PW11O39Zr(OH)(H2O)x]4- (1-M, x = 1 or 2), which favors H2O2 homolytic decomposition. The interaction of 1 with H2O2 has been investigated by HR-ESI-MS, ATR-FT-IR, and 31P NMR spectroscopic techniques. The combination of spectroscopic studies and kinetic modeling implicated the existence of two types of dimeric peroxo complexes, [Zr2(μ-η2:η2-O2){PW11O39}2(H2O)x]]8- and [{Zr(μ-η2-O2)}2(PW11O39)2(H2O)y]10-, along with monomeric Zr (hydro)peroxo species that begin to dominate at a high excess of H2O2. Both dimeric μ-η2-peroxo intermediates are inert toward alkenes under stoichiometric conditions. V-shape Hammett plots obtained for epoxidation of p-substituted styrenes suggested a biphilic nature of the active oxidizing species, which are monomeric Zr-hydroperoxo and peroxo species. Small basic additives increase the electrophilicity of the catalyst and decrease its nucleophilicity. HR-ESI-MS has identified a dimeric, most likely, bridging hydroperoxo species [{PW11O39Zr}2(μ-O)(μ-OOH)]9-, which may account for the improved epoxidation selectivity and regioselectivity toward sterically hindered C═C bonds.

Abstract
Oxidation represents one of the most important and practical chemical transformations for both organic synthesis, material science and pharmaceutical area. Among the existing strategies, molybdenum/tungsten-based heteropoly salts involved oxidations with low-cost and environmentally benign terminal oxidant and thus have attracted considerable attention in recent years. In this review, we have summarized the recent development of heteropoly salts utilized in oxidations, mainly the peroxomolybdates and peroxotungstates. We wish to highlight the progress made in the past 20 years of this field. Three categories are classified according to the aggregation state of metal oxides. Special attention is paid to the catalytically active peroxometalate species generated during the oxidation process. It is helpful to shed light on the common features that enable highly efficient and selective oxidations. We aim to inspire fellow chemists to explore more functional metalates for catalytic oxidations, especially asymmetric versions. Meanwhile, we attempt to understand the design principles for the discovery of more efficient, selective and economical catalytic systems.

Abstract
We report on the first example of a peroxouranium-containing {P8W48} wheel, [{(UO2)4(O2)4}2(P8W48O184)]40- (1), which was synthesized by a one-pot reaction of UO2(NO3)2·6H2O with the 48-tungsto-8-phosphate wheel [H7P8W48O184]33- and aqueous hydrogen peroxide in a pH 6 lithium acetate solution at 50 °C. Polyanion 1 comprises two tetrauranyl squares with side-on peroxo bridging ligands in the cavity of the {P8W48} wheel, and was isolated as the hydrated potassium-lithium salt K18Li22[{(UO2)4(O2)4}2(P8W48O184)]·133H2O (KLi-1), which was characterized in the solid state by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, as well as thermogravimetric and elemental analyses. A detailed Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectroscopy study was also performed.

Abstract
Organic-inorganic hybrid nanoparticles are prepared by free-radical copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with the structurally well-defined methacrylate-functionalized zirconium oxocluster Zr4O2(methacrylate)12. The polymerization process occurs in the confined space of miniemulsion droplets. The formation of covalent chemical bonds between the organic and the inorganic counterparts improves the distribution of the guest species (oxoclusters) in the polymer particles, overcoming problems related to migration, leaching, and stability. Because of the presence of a high number of double bonds (12 per oxocluster), the oxoclusters act as efficient cross-linking units for the resulting polymer matrix, thus ruling its swelling behavior in organic solvents. The synthesized hybrid nanostructures are applied as heterogeneous systems in the catalytic oxidation of an organic sulfide to the corresponding sulfoxide and sulfone by hydrogen peroxide, displaying quantitative sulfide conversion in 4-24 h, with overall turnover numbers (TON) up to 8000 after 4 cycles.

Abstract
The interaction between the 1:2 Zr(IV) :Wells-Dawson complex, K15 H[Zr(α2 -P2 W17 O61 )2] (1), and a range of surfactants was studied in detail with the aim of developing metal-substituted POMs as potential artificial proteases for membrane proteins. The surfactants include the positively charged cetyl(trimethyl)ammonium bromide (CTAB), the negatively charged sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), the neutral Triton X-100 (TX-100), and zwitterionic 3-[dodecyl(dimethyl)ammonio]-1-propanesulfonate (Zw3-13) and 3-[dimethyl(3-{[(3α,5β,7α,12α)-3,7,12-trihydroxy-24-oxocholan-24-yl]amino}propyl)ammonio]-1-propanesulfonate (CHAPS). A combination of multinuclear (1)H, (13)C, and (31) P NMR spectroscopy, (1)H diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy ((1)H DOSY), and nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy (NOESY) was used to examine the interaction between 1 and each surfactant on the molecular level. Cationic surfactant CTAB caused precipitation of 1 due to strong electrostatic interactions, while the anionic SDS and neutral TX-100 surfactants did not exhibit any interaction at neutral pD. (1)H DOSY NMR spectroscopy indicated an interaction between 1 and zwitterionic surfactants Zw3-12 and CHAPS, which occurs via the positively charged ammonium group in the surfactant molecule. In the presence of anionic, neutral, and zwitterionic surfactants, 1 preserves its catalytic activity towards the hydrolysis of the peptide bond in the dipeptide glycyl-l-histidine (GH). The fastest hydrolysis was observed at pD 7.0 and could be rationalized by taking into account pD-dependent speciation of 1 and coordination properties of GH.

Abstract
Detailed kinetic studies on the hydrolysis of glycylglycine (Gly-Gly) in the presence of the dimeric tetrazirconium(IV)-substituted Wells-Dawson-type polyoxometalate Na14[Zr4(P2W16O59)2(μ3-O)2(OH)2(H2O)4] · 57H2O (1) were performed by a combination of (1)H, (13)C, and (31)P NMR spectroscopies. The catalyst was shown to be stable under a broad range of reaction conditions. The effect of pD on the hydrolysis of Gly-Gly showed a bell-shaped profile with the fastest hydrolysis observed at pD 7.4. The observed rate constant for the hydrolysis of Gly-Gly at pD 7.4 and 60 °C was 4.67 × 10(-7) s(-1), representing a significant acceleration as compared to the uncatalyzed reaction. (13)C NMR data were indicative for coordination of Gly-Gly to 1 via its amide oxygen and amine nitrogen atoms, resulting in a hydrolytically active complex. Importantly, the effective hydrolysis of a series of Gly-X dipeptides with different X side chain amino acids in the presence of 1 was achieved, and the observed rate constant was shown to be dependent on the volume, chemical nature, and charge of the X amino acid side chain. To give a mechanistic explanation of the observed catalytic hydrolysis of Gly-Gly, a detailed quantum-chemical study was performed. The theoretical results confirmed the nature of the experimentally suggested binding mode in the hydrolytically active complex formed between Gly-Gly and 1. To elucidate the role of 1 in the hydrolytic process, both the uncatalyzed and the polyoxometalate-catalyzed reactions were examined. In the rate-determining step of the uncatalyzed Gly-Gly hydrolysis, a carboxylic oxygen atom abstracts a proton from a solvent water molecule and the nascent OH nucleophile attacks the peptide carbon atom. Analogous general-base activity of the free carboxylic group was found to take place also in the case of polyoxometalate-catalyzed hydrolysis as the main catalytic effect originates from the -C═O···Zr(IV) binding.

Abstract
We report for the first time on the selective hydrolysis of a polypeptide system by a metal-substituted polyoxometalate (POM). Oxidized insulin chain B, a 30 amino acid polypeptide, was selectively cleaved by the Zr(IV)-substituted Wells-Dawson POM, K15H[Zr(α2-P2W17O61)2]·25H2O, under physiological pH and temperature conditions in aqueous solution. HPLC-ESI-MS, LC-MS/MS, MALDI-TOF and MALDI-TOF MS/MS data indicate hydrolysis at the Phe1-Val2, Gln4-His5, Leu6-Cys(SO3H)7, and Gly8-Ser9 peptide bonds. The rate of oxidized insulin chain B hydrolysis (0.45 h(-1) at pH 7.0 and 60 °C) was calculated by fitting the integration values of its HPLC-UV signal to a first-order exponential decay function. (1)H NMR measurements show significant line broadening and shifting of the polypeptide resonances upon addition of the Zr(IV)-POM, indicating that interaction between the Zr(IV)-POM and the polypeptide takes place in solution. Circular dichroism (CD) measurements clearly prove that the flexible unfolded nature of the polypeptide was retained in the presence of the Zr(IV)-POM. The thermal stability of the Zr(IV)-POM in the presence of the polypeptide chain during the hydrolytic reaction was confirmed by (31)P NMR spectroscopy. Despite the highly negative charge of the Zr(IV)-POM, the mechanism of interaction appears to be dominated by a strong metal-directed binding between the positively charged Zr(IV) center and negatively charged amino acid side chains.

Abstract
In this paper we report the first example of peptide hydrolysis catalyzed by a polyoxometalate complex. A series of metal-substituted Wells-Dawson polyoxometalates were synthesized, and their hydrolytic activity toward the peptide bond in glycylglycine (GG) was examined. Among these, the Zr(IV)- and Hf(IV)-substituted ones were the most reactive. Detailed kinetic studies were performed with the Zr(IV)-substituted Wells-Dawson type polyoxometalate K(15)H[Zr(α(2)-P(2)W(17)O(61))(2)]·25H(2)O which was shown to act as a catalyst for the hydrolysis of the peptide bond in GG. The speciation of K(15)H[Zr(α(2)-P(2)W(17)O(61))(2)]·25H(2)O which is highly dependent on the pD, concentration, and temperature of the solution, was fully determined with the help of (31)P NMR spectroscopy and its influence on the GG hydrolysis rate was examined. The highest reaction rate (k(obs) = 9.2 (±0.2) × 10(-5) min(-1)) was observed at pD 5.0 and 60 °C. A 10-fold excess of GG was hydrolyzed in the presence of K(15)H[Zr(α(2)-P(2)W(17)O(61))(2)]·25H(2)O proving the principles of catalysis. (13)C NMR data suggested the coordination of GG to the Zr(IV) center in K(15)H[Zr(α(2)-P(2)W(17)O(61))(2)]·25H(2)O via its N-terminal amine group and amide carbonyl oxygen. These findings were confirmed by the inactivity of K(15)H[Zr(α(2)-P(2)W(17)O(61))(2)]·25H(2)O toward the N-blocked analogue acetamidoglycylglycinate and the inhibitory effect of oxalic, malic, and citric acid. Triglycine, tetraglycine, and pentaglycine were also fully hydrolyzed in the presence of K(15)H[Zr(α(2)-P(2)W(17)O(61))(2)]·25H(2)O yielding glycine as the final product of hydrolysis. K(15)H[Zr(α(2)-P(2)W(17)O(61))(2)]·25H(2)O also exhibited hydrolytic activity toward a series of other dipeptides.
