An Experimental and Theoretical Insight into I2 /Br2 Oxidation of Bis(pyridin-2-yl)Diselane and Ditellane

The reactivity between bis(pyridin-2-yl)diselane o Py2 Se2 and ditellane o Py2 Te2 (L1 and L2, respectively; o Py=pyridyn-2-yl) and I2 /Br2 is discussed. Single-crystal structure analysis revealed that the reaction of L1 with I2 yielded [(HL1+ )(I- )⋅5/2I2 ]∞ (1) in which monoprotonated cations HL1+ template a self-assembled infinite pseudo-cubic polyiodide 3D-network, while the reaction with Br2 yielded the dibromide Ho PySeII Br2 (2). The oxidation of L2 with I2 and Br2 yielded the compounds Ho PyTeII I2 (3) and Ho PyTeIV Br4 (6), respectively, whose structures were elucidated by X-ray diffraction analysis. FT-Raman spectroscopy measurements are consistent with a 3c-4e description of all the X-Ch-X three-body systems (Ch=Se, Te; X=Br, I) in compounds 2, 3, Ho PyTeII Br2 (5), and 6. The structural and spectroscopic observations are supported by extensive theoretical calculations carried out at the DFT level that were employed to study the electronic structure of the investigated compounds, the thermodynamic aspects of their formation, and the role of noncovalent σ-hole halogen and chalcogen bonds in the X⋅⋅⋅X, X⋅⋅⋅Ch and Ch⋅⋅⋅Ch interactions evidenced structurally.

The synthesis and crystal structure of 2-(chloro-selan-yl)pyridine 1-oxide: the first monomeric organoselenenyl chloride stabilized by an intra-molecular secondary Se⋯O inter-action

The title compound, C5H4ClNOSe, is the product of the reaction of sulfuryl chloride and 2-selanyl-1-pyridine 1-oxide in di-chloro-methane. The mol-ecule has an almost planar geometry (r.m.s. deviation = 0.012 Å), and its mol-ecular structure is stabilized by an intra-molecular secondary Se⋯O inter-action of 2.353 (3) Å, closing a four-membered N-C-Se⋯O ring. The title compound represents the first monomeric organoselenenyl chloride stabilized intra-molecularly by an inter-action of this type. The non-valent attractive Se⋯O inter-action results in a substantial distortion of the geometry of the ipso-carbon atom. The endo-cyclic N-C-Se [102.1 (3)°] and exo-cyclic C-C-Se [136.9 (3)°] bond angles deviate significantly from the ideal value of 120° for an sp2-hybridized carbon atom, the former bond angle being much smaller than the latter. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked by C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming zigzag chains propagating along [010]. The chains, which stack along the a-axis direction, are linked by offset π-π inter-actions [inter-centroid distance = 3.960 (3) Å], forming corrugated sheets parallel to the ab plane.

The nature of the interaction of dimethylselenide with IIIA group element compounds

The first systematic theoretical study of the nature of intermolecular bonding of dimethylselenide as donor and IIIA group element halides as acceptors was made with the help of the approach of Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules. Density Functional Theory with "old" Sapporo triple-ζ basis sets was used to calculate geometry, thermodynamics, and wave function of Me2Se···AX3 complexes. The analysis of the electron density distribution and the Laplacian of the electron density allowed us to reveal and explain the tendencies in the influence of the central atom (A = B, Al, Ga, In) and halogen (X = F, Cl, Br, I) on the nature of Se···A bonding. Significant changes in properties of the selenium lone pair upon complexation were described by means of the analysis of the Laplacian of the charge density. Charge transfer characteristics and the contributions to it from electron localization and delocalization were analyzed in terms of localization and delocalization indexes. Common features of the complexation and differences in the nature of bonding were revealed. Performed analysis evidenced that gallium and indium halide complexes can be attributed to charge transfer-driven complexes; aluminum halides complexes seem to be mainly of an electrostatic nature. The nature of bonding in different boron halides essentially varies; these complexes are stabilized mainly by covalent Se···B interaction. In all the complexes under study covalence of the Se···A interaction is rather high.
