Template free-synthesis of cobalt-iron chalcogenides [Co0.8Fe0.2L2, L = S, Se] and their robust bifunctional electrocatalysis for the water splitting reaction and Cr(vi) reduction

The ease of production of materials and showing multiple applications are appealing in this modern era of advanced technology. This paper reports the synthesis of a pair of novel cobalt-iron chalcogenides [Co0.8Fe0.2S2 and Co0.8Fe0.2Se2] with enhanced electro catalytic activities. These ternary metal chalcogenides were synthesized by a one-step template-free approach via a hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS)-assisted synthetic method. Transient photocurrent (TPC) studies and electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) of these materials showed free electron mobility. Their bifunctional activities were verified in both the electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and in the electrochemical reduction of toxic inorganic heavy metal ions [Cr(vi)] in polluted water. The materials showed robust catalytic ability in the oxygen evolution reaction with minimum possible over potential (345 and 350 mV @ η10) as determined by linear sweep voltammetry and the lower Tafel values (52.4 and 84.5 mV dec-1) for Co0.8Fe0.2Se2 and Co0.8Fe0.2S2 respectively. Surprisingly, both the materials also showed an excellent activity towards electrochemical Cr(vi) reduction to Cr(iii). Besides the maximum current achieved for Co0.8Fe0.2S2, a minimum value for the Limit of detection (LOD) was obtained for Co0.8Fe0.2S2 (0.159 μg L-1) compared to Co0.8Fe0.2Se2 (0.196 μg L-1). We tested the durability of catalysts, the critical factor for the prolonged use of catalysts, through the recyclability measurements of these materials as catalysts. Both the catalysts presented outstanding durability and balanced electro catalytic activities for up to 1500 CV cycles, and chronoamperometry studies also confirmed exceptional stability. The enhanced catalytic activities of these materials are ascribed to the free electron movement, evidenced by the increased TPC measured and EIS. Therefore, the template-free synthesis of these electro catalysts containing non-noble metal illustrates the practical approach to develop such types of catalysts for multiple functions.

Neutral binary chalcogen-nitrogen and ternary S,N,P molecules: new structures, bonding insights and potential applications

Early theoretical and experimental investigations of inorganic sulfur-nitrogen compounds were dominated by (a) assessments of the purported aromatic character of cyclic, binary S,N molecules and ions, (b) the unpredictable reactions of the fascinating cage compound S4N4, and (c) the unique structure and properties of the conducting polymer (SN)x. In the last few years, in addition to unexpected developments in the chemistry of well-known sulfur nitrides, the emphasis of these studies has changed to include nitrogen-rich species formed under high pressures, as well as the selenium analogues of well-known S,N compounds. Novel applications have been established or predicted for many binary S/Se,N molecules, including their use for fingerprint detection, in optoelectronic devices, as high energy-density compounds or as hydrogen-storage materials. The purpose of this perspective is to evaluate critically these new aspects of the chemistry of neutral, binary chalcogen-nitrogen molecules and to suggest experimental approaches to the synthesis of target compounds. Recently identified ternary S,N,P compounds will also be considered in light of their isoelectronic relationship with binary S,N cations.

Structural control of InP/ZnS core/shell quantum dots enables high-quality white LEDs

Herein, we demonstrate that the structural and optical control of InP-based quantum dots (QDs) can lead to high-performance light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Zinc sulphide (ZnS) shells passivate the InP QD core and increase the quantum yield in green-emitting QDs by 13-fold and red-emitting QDs by 8-fold. The optimised QDs are integrated in the liquid state to eliminate aggregation-induced emission quenching and we fabricated white LEDs with a warm, neutral and cool-white appearance by the down-conversion mechanism. The QD-functionalized white LEDs achieve luminous efficiency (LE) up to 14.7 lm W^-1 and colour-rendering index up to 80. The structural and optical control of InP/ZnS core/shell QDs enable 23-fold enhancement in LE of white LEDs compared to ones containing only QDs of InP core.

Single-pot synthesis of zinc nanoparticles, borane (BH3) and closo-dodecaborate (B12H12)(2-) using LiBH4 under mild conditions

Reduction of ZnCl2 using LiBH4 in mesitylene yielded zinc nanoparticles (Zn-NPs), borane (BH3) and closo-dodecaborate (B12H12)(2-). The BH3 evolved gas was trapped as Ph3P:BH3 adduct while closo-(B12H12)(2-) was extracted by methanol and characterized from spectral data.
