Recent advances in the chemistry of heavier group 14 analogues of carbonyls

Heavier analogues of carbonyls, in the form of "R2E=O" (E = Si, Ge, Sn, Pb), feature a high polar E=O double bond. In contrast to carbonyl compounds, heavier analogues are extremely unstable and prone to proceed head-to-tail oligomerization. Thus, the isolation of such species under ambient conditions is a challenging synthetic target in main group chemistry. In recent years, much progress has been achieved in the synthesis and isolation of a variety of Lewis base/acid, Lewis base-stabilized and even Lewis acid/base free heavier analogues. These compounds exhibit interesting reactivities, such as small molecule activation and metathesis reactions, indicating the potential of heavier analogues in synthetic chemistry. This review summarizes the recent achievements in the chemistry of Lewis base and/or acid stabilized heavier analogues of carbonyls, including synthetic approaches, structural parameters and reactivity of these isolable compounds.

Selective [2+1+1] Fragmentation of P4 by heteroleptic Metallasilylenes

Small-molecule activation by low-valent main-group element compounds is of general interest. We here report the synthesis and characterization (1 H, 13 C, 29 Si NMR, IR, sc-XRD) of heteroleptic metallasilylenes L1 (Cl)MSiL2 (M=Al 1, Ga 2, L1 =HC[C(Me)NDipp]2 , Dipp=2,6-i Pr2 C6 H3 ; L2 =PhC(Nt Bu)2 ). Their electronic nature was analyzed by quantum chemical computations, while their promising potential in small-molecule activation was demonstrated in reactions with P4 , which occurred with unprecedented [2+1+1] fragmentation of the P4 tetrahedron and formation of L1 (Cl)MPSi(L2 )PPSi(L2 )PM(Cl)L1 (M=Al 3, Ga 4).

Neutral six-coordinate bis(dithiocarbamato)silicon(iv) complexes with an SiCl2S4 skeleton

Treatment of SiCl₄ with lithium dithiocarbamates of the formula type Li[R₂NCS₂] (R = Ph, iPr) in a molar ratio of 1 : 2 afforded the respective six-coordinate silicon(iv) complexes [Ph₂NCS₂]₂SiCl₂ (3) and [iPr₂NCS₂]₂SiCl₂ (4), which were isolated as the solvates 3·MeCN and 4·MeCN. Compounds 3·MeCN and 4·MeCN were structurally characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and multinuclear NMR spectroscopic studies in the solid state and in solution. In this study, dithiocarbamato ligands were implemented in silicon coordination chemistry for the first time. Compounds 3 and 4 represent the first six-coordinate silicon(iv) complexes with an SiCl₂S₄ skeleton.

Synthesis, structure and reactivity of a donor-stabilised silylene with a bulky bidentate benzamidinato ligand

A novel donor-stabilised silicon(ii) complex with an SiN₃ skeleton was synthesised and its reactivity profile was characterised (reactions with N₂O, S₈, Se, Te, Me₃SiN₃, PhSCH₂N₃ and [Fe(CO)₅]).

Mixed valence η6-arene cobalt(I) and cobalt(II) compound

The first carbonyl free mixed valence cobalt(I)/cobalt(II) compound [2{L2Co(I)(η(6)-C7H8)}](2+) [Co(II)2Cl6](2-) (1) [L = PhC(N(t)Bu)2SiCl] was obtained by the reaction of four equivalents of anhydrous CoCl2 with five equivalents of N-heterocyclic chlorosilylene L. In contrast, the reaction of L with CoBr2 yielded [L2CoBr2] (2). Compound 1 was formed by the cleavage of Co-Cl bonds, the reduction of Co(II) to Co(I) and by the coordination of a toluene molecule. The chlorosilylene (L) functions as a reducing agent as well as a neutral σ-donor ligand. The toluene molecule coordinates to the Co(I) atom in an η(6)-fashion.
