Abstract
Terminal imido complexes containing metal-nitrogen multiple bonds have been widely used in organometallic chemistry and homogeneous catalysis. The role of terminal imido ligands spans from reactive sites to spectator motifs, largely depending on the nature of the metal center and its specific coordination sphere. Aiming at identifying reactivity descriptors for M-N multiple bonds, we herein explore solid-state 15N NMR spectroscopy (ssNMR) on early transition metal terminal imido complexes augmented by computational studies and show that the asymmetry parameter, κ (skew, 1 ≥ κ ≥ -1), readily available from experiments or calculations, is diagnostic for the reactivity of M-N multiple bonds in imido complexes. While inert imido ligands exhibit skew values (κ) close to 1, highly reactive imido moieties display significantly lower skew values (κ ≪ 1) as found in metallocene or bis-imido complexes. Natural chemical shielding analysis shows that skew values away from 1 are associated with an asymmetric development of π-orbitals around the M-N multiple bond of the imido moiety, with a larger double-bond character for reactive imido. Notably, this descriptor does not directly relate to the M-N-C bond angle, illustrating the shortcoming of evaluating bonding and hybridization from geometrical parameters alone. Overall, this descriptor enables to obtain direct experimental evidence for the π-loading effect seen in bis(imido) and related complexes, thus explaining their bonding/reactivity.

Abstract
We demonstrate reactivity between a β-diketiminate-supported niobium(III) imido complex and alkyl azides to form niobatetrazene complexes (BDI)Nb(NtBu)(RNNNNR) (BDI = N,N-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-3,5-dimethyl-β-diketiminate; R = cyclohexyl (1), benzyl (2)). Intriguingly, niobatetrazene complexes 1 and 2 can be interconverted via addition of an appropriate alkyl azide, likely through a series of concerted [3 + 2] cycloaddition and retrocycloaddition reactions in which π-loaded bis(imido) intermediates are formed. The bis(imido) intermediates were trapped upon addition of alkyl isocyanides to yield five-coordinate bis(imido) complexes (BDI)Nb(NtBu)(NCy)(CNR) (R = tert-butyl (4a), cyclohexyl (4b)). Two computational methods─density functional theory and density functional tight binding (DFTB)─were employed to calculate the lowest energy pathway across the potential energy surface for this multistep transformation. Reaction path calculations for individual cycloaddition or retrocycloaddition processes along the multistep reaction pathway showed that these transformations occur via a concerted, yet highly asynchronous mechanism, in which the two bond-breaking or -making events do not occur simultaneously. The use of the DFTB method in this work highlights its advantages and utility for studying transition metal systems.

Abstract
The reaction of the titanium imido complex 1b with 2-butyne leads to the formation of the titanium azadiene complex 2a at ambient temperature instead of yielding the archetypical [2 + 2] cycloaddition product (titanaazacyclobutene) which is usually obtained by combining titanium imido complexes and internal alkynes. The formation of 2a is presumably caused by an initial propargylic C(sp3)–H activation step and quantum chemical calculations suggest that the outcome of this unexpected reactivity is thermodynamically favored. The previously reported titanaazacyclobutene I (which is obtained by reacting 1b with 1-phenyl-1-propyne) undergoes a rearrangement reaction at elevated temperature to give the corresponding five-membered titanium azadiene complex 2b. An unexpected reactivity between a titanium imido complex and internal alkynes was unveiled yielding titanaazacyclobutenes instead of the expected [2 + 2] cycloaddition products.![]()

Abstract
The synthesis of weak chemical bonds at or near thermodynamic potential is a fundamental challenge in chemistry, with applications ranging from catalysis to biology to energy science. Proton-coupled electron transfer using molecular hydrogen is an attractive strategy for synthesizing weak element-hydrogen bonds, but the intrinsic thermodynamics presents a challenge for reactivity. Here we describe the direct photocatalytic synthesis of extremely weak element-hydrogen bonds of metal amido and metal imido complexes, as well as organic compounds with bond dissociation free energies as low as 31 kcal mol-1. Key to this approach is the bifunctional behaviour of the chromophoric iridium hydride photocatalyst. Activation of molecular hydrogen occurs in the ground state and the resulting iridium hydride harvests visible light to enable spontaneous formation of weak chemical bonds near thermodynamic potential with no by-products. Photophysical and mechanistic studies corroborate radical-based reaction pathways and highlight the uniqueness of this photodriven approach in promoting new catalytic chemistry.

Abstract
The bis(imido) complexes (BDI)Nb(N t Bu)2 and (BDI)Nb(N t Bu)(NAr) (BDI = N,N'-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-3,5-dimethyl-β-diketiminate; Ar = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl) were shown to engage in 1,2-addition and [2 + 2] cycloaddition reactions with a wide variety of substrates. Reaction of the bis(imido) complexes with dihydrogen, silanes, and boranes yielded hydrido-amido-imido complexes via 1,2-addition across Nb-imido π-bonds; some of these complexes were shown to further react via insertion of carbon dioxide to give formate-amido-imido products. Similarly, reaction of (BDI)Nb(N t Bu)2 with tert-butylacetylene yielded an acetylide-amido-imido complex. In contrast to these results, many related mono(imido) Nb BDI complexes do not exhibit 1,2-addition reactivity, suggesting that π-loading plays an important role in activating the Nb-N π-bonds toward addition. The same bis(imido) complexes were also shown to engage in [2 + 2] cycloaddition reactions with oxygen- and sulfur-containing heteroallenes to give carbamate- and thiocarbamate-imido complexes: some of these complexes readily dimerized to give bis-μ-sulfido, bis-μ-iminodicarboxylate, and bis-μ-carbonate complexes. The mononuclear carbamate imido complex (BDI)Nb(NAr)(N( t Bu)CO2) (12) could be induced to eject tert-butylisocyanate to generate a four-coordinate terminal oxo imido intermediate, which could be trapped as the five-coordinate pyridine or DMAP adduct. The DMAP adducted oxo imido complex (BDI)NbO(NAr)(DMAP) (16) was shown to engage in 1,2-addition of silanes across the Nb-oxo π-bond; this represents a new reaction pathway in group 5 chemistry.

Abstract
We report the syntheses of 2-pyridylimido complexes of tantalum and niobium by N═N bond cleavage of 2,2'-azopyridine. Reaction of MCl5 (M = Ta and Nb) with 2,2'-azopyridine in the presence of 0.5 equiv of 1-methyl-3,6-bis(trimethylsilyl)-1,4-cyclohexadiene (abbreviated Si-Me-CHD) afforded a dark red solution (for Ta) and a dark blue solution (for Nb) with some insoluble precipitates. After removing the solids, another 0.5 equiv of Si-Me-CHD was added to each solution, giving [M(═Npy)Cl3]n (1a: M = Ta; 1b: M = Nb) through reductive cleavage of the N═N bond of 2,2'-azopyridine. The initial products of the above reactions were determined to be 2,2'-azopyridine-bridged dinuclear complexes, [(MCl4)2(μ-pyNNpy)] (2a: M = Ta; 2b: M = Nb), which were isolated by treating MCl5 with 2,2'-azopyridine and Si-Me-CHD in a 2:1:1 molar ratio. In 2a and 2b, the N═N bond was reduced to a single bond via two-electron reduction. Further reduction of complexes 2a and 2b with 1 equiv of Si-Me-CHD afforded complexes 1a and 1b. An anionic doubly μ-imido-bridged ditantalum complex, [nBu4N][Ta2(μ-Npy)2Cl7] (3a), was generated upon addition of nBu4NCl to complex 1a, while addition of nBu4NCl to niobium complex 1b gave a polymeric terminal imido complex, [nBu4N]n/2[{Nb(═Npy)Cl3}2(μ-Cl)]n/2 (3b). Complexations of 1a and 1b with 1 equiv of 2,2'-bipyridine resulted in the formation of mononuclear 2-pyridylimido complexes, M(═Npy)Cl3(bipy) (4a: M = Ta; 4b: M = Nb), whose main structural feature is intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the ortho hydrogen atom of 2,2'-bipyridine and the nitrogen atom of the pyridyl group on the imido ligand. Isolated 2-pyridylimido complexes 4a and 4b reacted with [RhCl(cod)]2 to produce the corresponding early-late heterobimetallic complexes, (bipy)MCl3(μ-Npy)RhCl(cod) (5a: M = Ta; 5b: M = Nb).

Abstract
Low-valent early transition metals are often intrinsically highly reactive as a result of their strong propensity toward oxidation to more stable high-valent states. Harnessing these highly reducing complexes for productive reactivity is potentially powerful for C-C bond construction, organic reductions, small-molecule activation and many other reactions that offer orthogonal chemoselectivity and/or regioselectivity patterns to processes promoted by late transition metals. Recent years have seen many exciting new applications of low-valent metals through building new catalytic and/or multicomponent reaction manifolds out of classical reactivity patterns. In this Review, we survey new methods that employ early transition metals and invoke low-valent precursors or intermediates in order to identify common themes and strategies in synthesis and catalysis.

Abstract
Grafting Ti(=NtBu)(Me2 Pyr)2 (py)2 (Me2 Pyr= 2,5-dimethylpyrrolyl, py=pyridine) onto the surface of silica partially dehydroxylated at 700 °C gives the well-defined silica-supported Ti imido complex (≡SiO)Ti(=NtBu)(Me2 Pyr)(py)2 , which is fully characterized by IR and solid-state NMR spectroscopy as well as elemental and mass balance analyses. While stoichiometric imido-transfer reactivity is typical for Ti imides, the obtained surface complex is unique in that it enables catalytic transformations involving Ti imido and oxo intermediates. In particular, it efficiently catalyzes imidation of carbonyl compounds with N-sulfinylamines by oxo/imido heterometathesis.

Abstract
High-valent dichloride and dimethylniobium complexes 1 and 2 bearing tert-butylimido and N,N'-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-β-diketiminate (BDIAr) ligands were prepared. The dimethyl complex reacted with dihydrogen to release methane and generate the hydride-bridged diniobium(IV) complex 3 in high yield. One-electron oxidation of 3 with silver salts resulted in the release of dihydrogen and conversion to a mixed-valent NbIII-NbIV complex, 4, that displayed a frozen-solution X-band electron paramagnetic resonance signal consistent with a slight dissymmetry between the two Nb centers. Spectroscopic and computational analysis supported the presence of Nb-Nb σ-bonding interactions in both 3 and 4. Finally, one-electron reduction of 4 resulted in conversion to the highly dissymmetric NbV-NbV dimer 5 that formed from the reductive C-N bond cleavage of one of the BDIAr supporting ligands.

Abstract
We report the synthesis and photo-reactivity of d(0) niobium imido azido complexes supported by β-diketiminate ligands, which leads to the unprecedented formation of nitrides through a photo-assisted intramolecular rearrangement. This provides a new entry to metal nitrides that does not require low-valent metal centers and is a rare example in which the metal-imido moiety in group 5 complexes participates in reactivity.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of uranium(VI) mono(imido) complexes, by the oxidation of corresponding uranium(V) species, are presented. These experimental results, paired with DFT analyses, allow for the comparison of the electronic structure of uranium(VI) mono(oxo) and mono(imido) ligands within a conserved ligand framework and demonstrate that the magnitude of the ground state stabilization derived from the inverse trans-influence (ITI) is governed by the relative charge localization on the multiply bonded atom or group.
