Photoluminescence Enhancement of CdSe and CdSe-ZnS Nanocrystals by On-Surface Ligand Modification

Förster Resonance Energy Transfer Assisted Enhancement in Optoelectronic Properties of Metal Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals

Regulated excited state energy and charge transfer play a pivotal role in nanoscale semiconductor device performance for efficient energy harvesting and optoelectronic applications. Herein, we report the influence of Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) on the excited-state dynamics and charge transport properties of metal halide perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs), CsPbBr₃, and its anion-exchanged counterpart CsPbCl₃ with CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs). We report a drop in the FRET efficiency from ∼85% (CsPbBr₃) to ∼5% (CsPbCl₃) with QDs, inviting significant alteration in their charge transport properties. Using two-probe measurements we report substantial enhancement in the current for the blend structure of PNCs with QDs, originating from the reduced trap sites, compared to that of the pristine PNCs. The FRET-based upshot in the conduction mechanism with features of negative differential resistance and negligible hysteresis for CsPbBr₃ PNCs can add new directions to high performance-based photovoltaics and optoelectronics.

Fluorescence enhancement on silver nanoplates at the single- and sub-nanoparticle level

The fluorescence intensity of a fluorescent molecule can be strongly enhanced when the molecule is near a metal nanoparticle. Hence, fluorescence enhancement has a lot of applications in the fields of biology and medical science. It is necessary to understand the mechanism for such an attractive effect, if we intend to develop better materials to improve the enhancement. In this paper, we directly image the diverse patterns of fluorescence enhancement on single Ag nanoplates by super-resolution microscopy. The research reveals that the edges or tips of the Ag nanoplate usually show a much higher ability of fluorescence enhancement than the mid part. The spatial distribution of fluorescence enhancement strongly depends on the size of the Ag nanoplate as well as the angle between the Ag nanoplate and the incident light. The experimental results above are essentially consistent with the simulated electric field by the theory of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), but some irregularities still exist. We also find that fluorescence enhancement on small Ag nanoplates is mainly due to in-plane dipole plasmon resonance, while the enhancement on large Ag nanoplates is mainly due to in-plane quadrupole plasmon resonance. Furthermore, in-plane quadrupole resonance of large plates has a higher ability to enhance the fluorescence signal than the in-plane dipole plasmon resonance. This research provides many valuable insights into the fluorescence enhancement at the single- and sub-nanoparticle level, and will be very helpful in developing better relevant materials.

Quantum yield regeneration: influence of neutral ligand binding on photophysical properties in colloidal core/shell quantum dots

This article describes an experiment designed to identify the role of specific molecular ligands in maintaining the high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (QY) observed in as-synthesized CdSe/CdZnS and CdSe/CdS quantum dots (QDs). Although it has been possible for many years to prepare core/shell quantum dots with near-unity quantum yield through high-temperature colloidal synthesis, purification of such colloidal particles is frequently accompanied by a reduction in quantum yield. Here, a recently established gel permeation chromatography (GPC) technique is used to remove weakly associated ligands without a change in solvent: a decrease in ensemble QY and average PL lifetime is observed. Minor components of the initial mixture that were removed by GPC are then added separately to purified QD samples to determine whether reintroduction of these components can restore the photophysical properties of the initial sample. We show that among these putative ligands trioctylphosphine and cadmium oleate can regenerate the initial high QY of all samples, but only the "L-type" ligands (trioctyphosphine and oleylamine) can restore the QY without changing the shapes of the optical spectra. On the basis of the PL decay analysis, we confirm that quenching in GPC-purified samples and regeneration in ligand-introduced samples are associated chiefly with changes in the relative population fraction of QDs with different decay rates. The reversibility of the QY regeneration process has also been studied; the introduction and removal of trioctylphosphine and oleylamine tend to be reversible, while cadmium oleate is not. Finally, isothermal titration calorimetry has been used to study the relationship between the binding strength of the neutral ligands to the surface and photophysical property changes in QD samples to which they are added.

Constructing nanosized CdTe nanocrystal clusters with thermo-responsive photoluminescence characteristics

Photoluminescence clusters of CdTe nanocrystals self-assembled by PNAEAM-b-PNIPAM copolymers represent sensitive and reversible thermo-responsive properties in aqueous solutions.
