Abstract
The cyclometalated terpyridine complexes [Ru(η2-OAc)(NC-tpy)(PP)] (PP = dppb 1, (R,R)-Skewphos 4, (S,S)-Skewphos 5) are easily obtained from the acetate derivatives [Ru(η2-OAc)2(PP)] (PP = dppb, (R,R)-Skewphos 2, (S,S)-Skewphos 3) and tpy in methanol by elimination of AcOH. The precursors 2, 3 are prepared from [Ru(η2-OAc)2(PPh3)2] and Skewphos in cyclohexane. Conversely, the NNN complexes [Ru(η1-OAc)(NNN-tpy)(PP)]OAc (PP = (R,R)-Skewphos 6, (S,S)-Skewphos 7) are synthesized in a one pot reaction from [Ru(η2-OAc)2(PPh3)2], PP and tpy in methanol. The neutral NC-tpy 1, 4, 5 and cationic NNN-tpy 6, 7 complexes catalyze the transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone (S/C = 1000) in 2-propanol with NaOiPr under light irradiation at 30 °C. Formation of (S)-1-phenylethanol has been observed with 4, 6 in a MeOH/iPrOH mixture, whereas the R-enantiomer is obtained with 5, 7 (50-52% ee). The tpy complexes show cytotoxic activity against the anaplastic thyroid cancer 8505C and SW1736 cell lines (ED50 = 0.31-8.53 µM), with the cationic 7 displaying an ED50 of 0.31 µM, four times lower compared to the enantiomer 6.

Introducing Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry to Identify Site-Selective C-H Bond Activation in N-Heterocyclic Carbene Metal Complexes. Abstract
The activation of C-H bonds in a selective manner still constitutes a major challenge from a synthetic point of view; thus, it remains an active area of fundamental and applied research. Herein, we introduce ion mobility spectrometry mass spectrometry-based (IM-MS) approaches to uncover site-selective C-H bond activation in a series of metal complexes of general formula [(NHC)LMCl]+ (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene; L = pentamethylcyclopentadiene (Cp*) or p-cymene; M = Pd, Ru, and Ir). The C-H bond activation at the N-bound groups of the NHC ligand is promoted upon collision induced dissociation (CID). The identification of the resulting [(NHC-H)LM]+ isomers relies on the distinctive topology that such cyclometalated isomers adopt upon site-selective C-H bond activation. Such topological differences can be reliably evidenced as different mobility peaks in their respective CID-IM mass spectra. Alternative isomers are also identified via dehydrogenation at the Cp*/p-cymene (L) ligands to afford [(NHC)(L-H)M]+. The fragmentation of the ion mobility-resolved peaks is also investigated by CID-IM-CID. It enables the assignment of mobility peaks to the specific isomers formed from C(sp2)-H or C(sp3)-H bond activation and distinguishes them from the Cp*/p-cymene (L) dehydrogenation isomers. The conformational change of the NHC ligands upon C-H bond activation, concomitant with cyclometalation, is also discussed on the basis of the estimated collision cross section (CCS). A unique conformation change of the pyrene-tagged NHC members is identified that involves the reorientation of the NHC ring accompanied by a folding of the pyrene moiety.

Abstract
In this review, we describe the synthesis and use in hydrogen transfer reactions of ruthenacycles and iridacycles. The review limits itself to metallacycles where a ligand is bound in bidentate fashion to either ruthenium or iridium via a carbon–metal sigma bond, as well as a dative bond from a heteroatom or an N-heterocyclic carbene. Pincer complexes fall outside the scope. Described are applications in (asymmetric) transfer hydrogenation of aldehydes, ketones, and imines, as well as reductive aminations. Oxidation reactions, i.e., classical Oppenauer oxidation, which is the reverse of transfer hydrogenation, as well as dehydrogenations and oxidations with oxygen, are described. Racemizations of alcohols and secondary amines are also catalyzed by ruthenacycles and iridacycles.

Abstract
Fluorescence probes that selectively image cadmium are useful for detecting and tracking the amount of Cd2+ in cells and tissues. In this study, we designed and synthesized a novel Cd2+ fluorescence probe based on the pyridine-pyrimidine structure, 4-(methylsulfanyl)-6-(pyridin-2-yl)pyrimidin-2-amine (3), as a low-molecular-weight fluorescence probe for Cd2+. Compound 3 could successfully discriminate between Cd2+ and Zn2+ and exhibited a highly selective turn-on response toward Cd2+ over biologically related metal ions. The dissociation constant (Kd) and the limit of detection (LOD) of 5.4 × 10- 6 mol L- 1 and 4.4 × 10- 7 mol L- 1, respectively, were calculated using fluorescence titration experiments. Studies with closely related analogs showed that the bis-heterocyclic moiety of 3 acted as both a coordination site for Cd2+ and a fluorophore. Further, the methylsulfanyl group of compound 3 is essential for achieving selective and sensitive Cd2+ detection. Fluorescence microscopy studies using living cells revealed that the cell membrane permeability of compound 3 is sufficient to detect intracellular Cd2+. These results indicate that novel bis-heterocyclic molecule 3 has considerable potential as a fluorescence probe for Cd2+ in biological applications.

Abstract
A concept for the quantification of cooperative effects in transition-metal complexes is presented. It is demonstrated for a series of novel N,N- (mononuclear) and C,N-coordinated homo- and heterometallic binuclear complexes based on the (2-dimethylamino)-4-(2-pyrimidinyl)pyrimidine ligand, which are accessible by applying roll-over cyclometallation. These iridium-, platinum-, and palladium-containing compounds are investigated with respect to their absorption and fluorescence spectra. The cooperative effects in the electronic absorptions, i. e., the energetic shifts between mononuclear and dinuclear complexes, and free ligands are analyzed on the basis of the lowest energy π-π* transitions and compared to calculated data, obtained from TD-DFT calculations. Furthermore the corresponding fluorescence spectra are presented and analyzed with respect to the concept of cooperativity.

Abstract
Rollover cyclometalation constitutes a particular case of cyclometallation reaction. This reaction occurs when a chelated heterocyclic ligand loses its bidentate coordination mode and undergoes an internal rotation, after which a remote C-H bond is regioselectively activated, affording an uncommon cyclometalated complex, called "rollover cyclometalated complex". The key of the process is the internal rotation of the ligand, which occurs before the C-H bond activation and releases from coordination a donor atom. The new "rollover" ligand has peculiar properties, being a ligand with multiple personalities, no more a spectator in the reactivity of the complex. The main reason of this peculiarity is the presence of an uncoordinated donor atom (the one initially involved in the chelation), able to promote a series of reactions not available for classic cyclometalated complexes. The rollover reaction is highly regioselective, because the activated C-H bond is usually in a symmetric position with respect to the donor atom which detaches from the metal stating the rollover process. Due to this novel behavior, a series of potential applications have appeared in the literature, in fields such as catalysis, organic synthesis, and advanced materials.

Abstract
Complexes of the type [Cp*Ir(N,N')Cl]+ (N,N' = 2-(2-dialkylaminopyrimidin-4-yl)pyrimidine) can undergo roll-over cyclometallation leading to a novel N,N'-donor site. Following this strategy heterobimetallic complexes including iridium(iii) and a Group X metal centre in the oxidation state +II were achieved.

Abstract
The recently introduced pump-probe fragmentation action spectroscopy reveals a unique observation of excited state vibrational coherence (430-460 fs) in the isolated metal complex [Ag2(Cl)(dcpm)2)]+ (dcpm = bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)methane) containing the [Ag2Cl]+ scaffold. After photoexcitation by an 1XMCT transition (260 nm) in an ion trap, an unexpected correlation between specific fragment ions (loss of HCl/Cl- vs loss of dcpm) and the phase of the wave packet is probed (1150 nm). Based on ab initio calculations, we assign the primary electronically excited state and ascribe the observed coherences (72-78 cm-1) to contain predominantly Ag-Ag stretch character. We propose specific probe absorption and vibronic coupling at the classical turning points to switch remarkably early on between the different fragmentation pathways. The overall excited state dynamics are fitted to a multiexponential decay with time constants: 0.2-0.4/3-4/19-26/104-161 ps. These findings open new perspectives for further dynamics investigations and possible applications in photocatalysis.

Abstract
The rollover cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes [PtMe(2,X'-bpy-H)(PPh3)], (X = 2, 1a; X = 3, 1b; and X = 4, 1c) containing two potential nucleophilic centers have been investigated to elucidate which center is the stronger nucleophile toward methyl iodide. On the basis of DFT calculations, complexes 1b and 1c are predicted reacting with MeI through the free nitrogen donor to form N-methylated platinum(II) complexes, while complex 1a reacts through oxidative addition on platinum to give a platinum(IV) complex, which is in agreement with experimental findings. The reasons for this difference in selectivity for complexes 1a-1c are discussed based on the energy barrier needed for N-methylation versus oxidative addition reactions.

Abstract
Starting from 2,4-dichloropyrimidine, 4-(2-dialkylamino)pyrimidinyl functionalized mesitylimidazolium chlorides are accessible in a five-step reaction sequence. Two routes leading to palladium NHC complexes derived from these ligands have been worked out: By transmetalation with the corresponding NHC-AgCl complexes, C,N-coordinated palladium(II) complexes can be obtained. Treatment of palladium dichloride with the imidazolium salts in pyridine and in the presence of K2 CO3 gives cyclometalated and thus C,C-coordinated compounds. The reactivities of all these compounds were investigated in detail as well as their performance in the catalytic Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. It turned out that the C,C-coordinated derivatives exhibit high catalytic activities in the coupling of arylboronic acids with aryl chlorides, which is consistent with the generally accepted mechanistic ideas on substrate activation.

Abstract
This study elucidates structures, activation barriers, and the gas-phase reactivity of cationic ruthenium transfer hydrogenation catalysts of the structural type [(η6-cym)RuX(pympyr)]+. In these complexes, the central ruthenium(+II) ion is coordinated to an η6-bound p-cymene (η6-cym), a bidentate 2-R-4-(2-pyridinyl)pyrimidine ligand (pympyr) with R = NH2 or N(CH3)2, and an anion X = I-, Br-, Cl-, or CF3SO3-. We present infrared multiple-photon dissociation (IR-MPD) spectra of precursors (before HCl loss) and of activated complexes (after HCl loss), which elucidates C-H activation as the key step in the activation mechanism. A resonant two-color IR-MPD scheme serves to record several otherwise "dark" bands and enhances the validity of spectral assignments. We show that collision-induced dissociation (CID)-derived activation energies of the [(η6-cym)RuX(pympyr)]+ (R = N(CH3)2) complexes depend crucially on the anion X. The obtained activation energies for the HX loss correlate well with quantum chemical activation barriers and are in line with the HSAB concept. We further elucidate the reaction of the activated complexes with D2 under single-collision conditions. Quantum mechanical simulations substantiate that the resulting species represent analogues for hydrido intermediates formed after abstraction of H+ and H- from isopropanol, as postulated for the catalytic cycle of transfer hydrogenation by us before.

Abstract
The novel tridentate PNNOH pincer ligand LH features a reactive 2-hydroxypyridine functionality as well as a bipyridyl-methylphosphine skeleton for meridional coordination. This proton-responsive ligand coordinates in a straightforward manner to RuCl(CO)(H)(PPh3)3 to generate complex 1. The methoxy-protected analogue LMe was also coordinated to Ru(II) for comparison. Both species have been crystallographically characterized. Site-selective deprotonation of the 2-hydroxypyridine functionality to give 1' was achieved using both mild (DBU) and strong bases (KOtBu and KHMDS), with no sign of involvement of the phosphinomethyl side arm that was previously established as the reactive fragment. Complex 1' is catalytically active in the dehydrogenation of formic acid to generate CO-free hydrogen in three consecutive runs as well as for the dehydrogenative coupling of alcohols, giving high conversions to different esters and outperforming structurally related PNN ligands lacking the NOH fragment. DFT calculations suggest more favorable release of H2 through reversible reactivity of the hydroxypyridine functionality relative to the phosphinomethyl side arm.

Abstract
The synthesis of 2-substituted pyridine-pyrimidine ligands and their complexation with arene ruthenium(II) chloride moieties is reported. Depending on the electronic and steric influences of the ligand, the catalysts undergo CH activation by roll-over cyclometalation. This process opens up the route to the catalytic transfer hydrogenation of ketones with isopropanol as the hydrogen source under base-free and mild conditions. Barriers related to the roll-over cyclometalation process can be determined experimentally by collision-induced dissociation ESI mass spectrometry. They are supported by DFT calculations and allow the classification of the ligands according to their electronic and steric properties, which is also in accordance with critical bond parameters derived from X-ray structure data. DFT calculations furthermore reveal that the formation of a ruthenium(II) hydrido species is plausible through β-hydride elimination from isopropanol.

Abstract
A new bipyridine ligand, 6-(1-phenylbenzyl)-2,2'-bipyridine, has been prepared by a multistep synthesis starting from the corresponding substituted pyridine. The coordinating properties of the new ligand have been tested with two d(8) metal ions, Pt(ii) and Pd(ii), to give the cyclometalated complexes [Pt(N,N,C)Cl] and [Pd(N,N,C)Cl], where N,N,C is a terdentate deprotonated bipyridine containing a new stereogenic carbon atom directly generated by C-H bond activation. The single-crystal of the platinum complex has been solved by X-ray diffraction. DFT calculations confirm the presence of a PtH interaction that stabilizes one of the two possible conformers by 14.7 kJ mol(-1) for Pt and 12.9 kJ mol(-1) for Pd. The energy barrier to pass from one conformer to the other is 25.4 and 23.8 kJ mol(-1) respectively. Under different reaction conditions, regioselective activation of a pyridine C-H bond gave the less common cyclometalated rollover complex [Pt(L-H)Me(DMSO)], which was isolated and characterised.

Abstract
The reaction of the cyclometalated rollover complex [Pt(bpy-H)(Me)(DMSO)] (bpy-H = cyclometalated 2,2'-bipyridine) with two diphosphines, dppm (1,1-bis(diphenylphosphino)methane) and dppe (1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane), was investigated. According to the reaction conditions, dppm behaves as a monodentate, bridging or chelated ligand, whereas dppe gave only chelated species. Some aspects of the reactivity of the isolated species were studied, including protonation with [H3O·18-crown-6][BF4] and coordination reactions of mononuclear complexes, obtaining, inter alia, rare examples of unsymmetrical organometallic species with bridging dppm.

Abstract
Rollover cyclometalation involves bidentate heterocyclic donors, unusually acting as cyclometalated ligands. The resulting products, possessing a free donor atom, react differently from the classical cyclometalated complexes. Taking advantage of a "rollover"/"retro-rollover" reaction sequence, a succession of oxidative addition and reductive elimination in a series of platinum(II) complexes [Pt(N,C)(Me)(PR3)] resulted in a rare C(sp(2))-C(sp(3)) bond formation to give the bidentate nitrogen ligands 3-methyl-2,2'-bipyridine, 3,6-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine, and 3-methyl-2-(2'-pyridyl)-quinoline, which were isolated and characterized. The nature of the phosphane PR3 is essential to the outcome of the reaction. This route constitutes a new method for the activation and functionalization of C-H bond in the C(3) position of bidentate heterocyclic compounds, a position usually difficult to functionalize.
