A cobalt(II) coordination polymer-derived catalyst engineered via temperature-induced semi-reversible single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) dehydration for efficient liquid-phase epoxidation of olefins

Single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformations provide more avenues for phase transitions, which have piqued great interest in crystal engineering. In this work, a 3D Co(II)-based coordination polymer (CP), {Co2(OH2)8(btec)}·4H2O (1), (where (btec)4- = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylate) undergoes SCSC transition upon heating at 180 °C to afford an anhydrous phase [Co2(btec)] (1'). Room-temperature water-vapour induced semi-reversible SCSC transformation of 1' involves condensation of two water molecules coordinating to the metal cluster, yielding a new framework [Co2(OH2)2(btec)] (2). These SCSC transitions were accomplished through a sequential bond breaking and new bond formation process which was accompanied by colour changes from orange (1) → violet (1') → pink (2). All materials were structurally elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) and further established by various analytical techniques. According to SCXRD data, all the frameworks possess octahedral geometries around the cobalt(II) sphere. SCXRD studies further revealed that 1 is a polymeric architecture with a binodal 4-c sql topology while 1' and 2 possess (3,6)-c kgd and (4,6)-c scu 3D nets, respectively. By virtue of multitopicity exhibited by the tetracarboxylate, the coordination number of the linker around the Co(II) sphere increased from four (in 1) to eight (in 1') and then decreased to six (in 2). Most interestingly, permanent porosity could be observed for the dihydrate 2, originated from potential void space as substantiated by dinitrogen (N2) sorption isotherm. These porous frameworks were active catalysts for the aerobic epoxidation of the model substrate cyclohexene using molecular oxygen (O2) as the final oxidant in the presence of the sacrificial i-butyraldehyde (IBA) reductant. For using the dihydrous phase 2, cyclohexene and various other olefins were catalytically oxidised to their corresponding epoxides with up to 38.5% conversion and 99.0% selectivity. The catalyst 2 can be expediently recycled in four runs without significant loss of activity. This research demonstrates that a little innovation in the active-site-engineered organic-inorganic hybrid materials can significantly enhance the catalytic performance and selectivity of coordination polymer-derived heterogeneous catalysts.

A new series of 3D lanthanide phenoxycarboxylates: synthesis, crystal structure, magnetism and photoluminescence studies

A new series of 3D Ln-carboxylates was synthesized, where the Tb one shows antiferromagnetic coupling and the Dy one shows ferromagnetic interaction, and with emission spectra combining the intra-4f emission of the Ln ions and that of the ligand.

In-situ reaction monitoring of a mechanochemical ball mill reaction with solid state NMR

We present an approach towards the in situ solid state NMR monitoring of mechanochemical reactions in a ball mill. A miniaturized vibration ball mill is integrated into the measuring coil of a home-built solid state NMR probe, allowing for static solid state NMR measurements during the mechanochemical reaction within the vessel. The setup allows to quantitatively follow the product evolution of a prototypical mechanochemical reaction, the formation of zinc phenylphosphonate from zinc acetate and phenylphosphonic acid. MAS NMR investigations on the final reaction mixture confirmed a reaction yield of 89% in a typical example. Thus, NMR spectroscopy may in the future provide complementary information about reaction mechanisms of mechanochemical reactions and team up with other analytical methods which have been employed to follow reactions in situ, such as Raman spectroscopy or X-ray diffraction.

A Highly Efficient Heterogeneous Catalyst of Bimetal-Organic Frameworks for the Epoxidation of Olefin with H2O2

A series of bimetel organic framework Mn_xCu_1-x-MOF were prepared. The MOFs was characterized and analyzed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The catalytic activity of the developed catalyst was tested on various olefins by H₂O₂ as oxidant. The MOFs catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activity for the epoxidations of various aromatic and cyclic olefins. Particularly, Mn_0.1Cu_0.9-MOF can achieve 90.2% conversion of styrene with 94.3% selectivity of styrene oxide at 0 °C after reaction 6 h. The MOF exhibited the catalytic activity of inverse temperature effect on epoxidation of styrene. The introduction of copper component can stabilize H₂O₂ and inhibit its decomposition to a certain extent. The catalyst can be reused at least five cycles without significant loss in activity towards epoxidation.

Copper based coordination polymers based on metalloligands: utilization as heterogeneous oxidation catalysts

This work presents two copper-based coordination polymers and their utilization as stable, reusable and heterogeneous catalysts for the epoxidation of olefins using O₂ and for peroxide-mediated oxidation of benzyl alcohols under solvent-free conditions.

Structural diversity and catalytic properties of five Co2(COO)4cluster-based coordination polymers modified with R-isophthalic acid (R = H, NO2, CH3, OH andtBu)

By regulation the substituents on 5-position of isophthalic acid, we isolated five Co-based CPs with structural diversity, which all constructed from the Co₂(COO)₄unit. The catalytic properties for Knoevenagel condensation and selective epoxidation of styrene have also been investigated.

Dynamic DMF Binding in MOF-5 Enables the Formation of Metastable Cobalt-Substituted MOF-5 Analogues

Multinuclear solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, first-principles molecular dynamics simulations, and other complementary evidence reveal that the coordination environment around the Zn(2+) ions in MOF-5, one of the most iconic materials among metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), is not rigid. The Zn(2+) ions bind solvent molecules, thereby increasing their coordination number, and dynamically dissociate from the framework itself. On average, one ion in each cluster has at least one coordinated N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) molecule, such that the formula of as-synthesized MOF-5 is defined as Zn4O(BDC)3(DMF) x (x = 1-2). Understanding the dynamic behavior of MOF-5 leads to a rational low-temperature cation exchange approach for the synthesis of metastable Zn4-x Co x O(terephthalate)3 (x > 1) materials, which have not been accessible through typical high-temperature solvothermal routes thus far.
