Spectroscopic and Computational Investigation of Low-Spin Mn(III) Bis(scorpionate) Complexes

C-H Bond Oxidation by MnIV-Oxo Complexes: Hydrogen-Atom Tunneling and Multistate Reactivity

The reactivity of six MnIV-oxo complexes in C-H bond oxidation has been examined using a combination of kinetic experiments and computational methods. Variable-temperature studies of the oxidation of 9,10-dihydroanthracene (DHA) and ethylbenzene by these MnIV-oxo complexes yielded activation parameters suitable for evaluating electronic structure computations. Complementary kinetic experiments of the oxidation of deuterated DHA provided evidence for hydrogen-atom tunneling in C-H bond oxidation for all MnIV-oxo complexes. These results are in accordance with the Bell model, where tunneling occurs near the top of the transition-state barrier. Density functional theory (DFT) and DLPNO-CCSD(T1) computations were performed for three of the six MnIV-oxo complexes to probe a previously predicted multistate reactivity model. The DFT computations predicted a thermal crossing from the 4B1 ground state to a 4E state along the C-H bond oxidation reaction coordinate. DLPNO-CCSD(T1) calculations further confirm that the 4E transition state offers a lower energy barrier, reinforcing the multistate reactivity model for these complexes. We discuss how this multistate model can be reconciled with recent computations that revealed that the kinetics of C-H bond oxidation by this set of MnIV-oxo complexes can be well-predicted on the basis of the thermodynamic driving force for these reactions.

Electronic Structure and Magnetic Properties of a High-Spin MnIII Complex: [Mn(mesacac)3 ] (mesacac=1,3-Bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-propane-1,3-dionato)

Metal acetylacetonates of the general formula [M(acac)₃ ] (M^III =Cr, Mn, Fe, Co) are among the best investigated coordination compounds. Many of these first-row transition metal complexes are known to have unique electronic properties. Independently, photophysical research with different β-diketonate ligands pointed towards the possibility of a special effect of the 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl substituted acetylacetonate (mesacac) on the electron distribution between ligand and metal (MLCT). We therefore synthesized and fully characterized the previously unknown octahedral title complex. Its solid-state structure shows a Jahn-Teller elongation with two Mn-O bonds of 2.12/2.15 Å and four Mn-O bonds of 1.93 Å. Thermogravimetric data show a thermal stability up to 270 °C. High-resolution mass spectroscopy helped to identify the decomposition pathways. The electronic state and spin configuration of manganese were characterized with a focus on its magnetic properties by measurement of the magnetic susceptibility and triple-zeta density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The high-spin state of manganese was confirmed by the determination of an effective magnetic moment of 4.85 μ_B for the manganese center.

Homochiral Mn3+ Spin-Crossover Complexes: A Structural and Spectroscopic Study

Structural, magnetic, and spectroscopic data on a Mn³⁺ spin-crossover complex with Schiff base ligand 4-OMe-Sal₂323, isolated in crystal lattices with five different counteranions, are reported. Complexes of [Mn(4-OMe-Sal₂323)]X where X = ClO₄^– (1), BF₄^– (2), NO₃^– (3), Br^– (4), and I^– (5) crystallize isotypically in the chiral orthorhombic space group P2₁2₁2 with a range of spin state preferences for the [Mn(4-OMe-Sal₂323)]⁺ complex cation over the temperature range 5–300 K. Complexes 1 and 2 are high-spin, complex 4 undergoes a gradual and complete thermal spin crossover, while complexes 3 and 5 show stepped crossovers with different ratios of spin triplet and quintet forms in the intermediate temperature range. High-field electron paramagnetic resonance was used to measure the zero-field splitting parameters associated with the spin triplet and quintet states at temperatures below 10 K for complexes 4 and 2 with respective values: D_S=1 = +23.38(1) cm^–1, E_S=1 = +2.79(1) cm^–1, and D_S=2 = +6.9(3) cm^–1, with a distribution of E parameters for the S = 2 state. Solid-state circular dichroism (CD) spectra on high-spin complex 1 at room temperature reveal a 2:1 ratio of enantiomers in the chiral conglomerate, and solution CD measurements on the same sample in methanol show that it is stable toward racemization. Solid-state UV–vis absorption spectra on high-spin complex 1 and mixed S = 1/S = 2 sample 5 reveal different intensities at higher energies, in line with the different electronic composition. The statistical prevalence of homochiral crystallization of [Mn(4-OMe-Sal₂323)]⁺ in five lattices with different achiral counterions suggests that the chirality may be directed by the 4-OMe-Sal₂323 ligand.

Zero-field splitting parameters of the spin triplet and quintet forms of a spin-crossover Mn³⁺ complex stabilized in lattices with different counterions are measured by high-field electron paramagnetic resonance at different frequencies. The homochiral crystallization of the enantiopure Δ or Λ forms of the chelate complex, despite the use of achiral anions, is attributed to the steric influence of the ligand substituent.

Spin Crossover and Long-Lived Excited States in a Reduced Molecular Ruby

The chromium(III) complex [Cr^III(ddpd)₂]³⁺ (molecular ruby; ddpd=N,N′‐dimethyl‐N,N′‐dipyridine‐2‐yl‐pyridine‐2,6‐diamine) is reduced to the genuine chromium(II) complex [Cr^II(ddpd)₂]²⁺ with d⁴ electron configuration. This reduced molecular ruby represents one of the very few chromium(II) complexes showing spin crossover (SCO). The reversible SCO is gradual with T_1/2 around room temperature. The low‐spin and high‐spin chromium(II) isomers exhibit distinct spectroscopic and structural properties (UV/Vis/NIR, IR, EPR spectroscopies, single‐crystal XRD). Excitation of [Cr^II(ddpd)₂]²⁺ with UV light at 20 and 290 K generates electronically excited states with microsecond lifetimes. This initial study on the unique reduced molecular ruby paves the way for thermally and photochemically switchable magnetic systems based on chromium complexes complementing the well‐established iron(II) SCO systems.

Spin state solvomorphism in a series of rare S = 1 manganese(iii) complexes

Structural, magnetic and spectroscopic data of four complex salts, [Mn(napsal₂323)]NTf₂, 1,[Mn(napsal₂323)]ClO₄, 2, [Mn(napsal₂323)]BF₄, 3 and [Mn(napsal₂323)]NO₃, 4, of the [Mn(napsal₂323)]⁺ complex cation indicate that the Mn³⁺ ion is stabilized in the rare S = 1 spin triplet form in this ligand sphere. Zero-field splitting values of D = +19.6 cm^-1 and |E| = 2.02 cm^-1 for complex 1 were obtained by High Field Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (HFEPR) measurements conducted over a range of frequencies. Structural and magnetic data also indicate that co-crystallization of complexes 2 and 3 with 0.5 equivalents of ethanol yields the high spin S = 2 forms of the perchlorate and tetrafluoroborate solvates [Mn(napsal₂323)]ClO₄·0.5(C₂H₅OH), 2·0.5EtOH and [Mn(napsal₂323)]BF₄·0.5(C₂H₅OH), 3·0.5EtOH.

Heteroleptic cobalt(iii) acetylacetonato complexes with N-heterocyclic carbine-donating scorpionate ligands: synthesis, structural characterization and catalysis

A first structure-determined heteroleptic cobalt(iii) complex with the less hindered tris(carbene)borate works as a catalyst precursor for alkane oxidation.

Near-infrared 2Eg → 4A2g and visible LMCT luminescence from a molecular bis-(tris(carbene)borate) manganese(IV) complex

The molecular bis-(tris(carbene)borate) manganese(IV) complex [{PhB(MeIm)3}2Mn](OTf)2 shows 2Eg → 4A2g luminescence at 828 nm in the solid state at 85 K; this wavelength is longer by approximately 100 nm than the wavelengths typically observed for manganese(IV) and chromium(III) doped solids and for molecular chromium(III) complexes. Weak luminescence is also observed from a LMCT excited state with an absorption maximum at 500 nm. This represents the first molecular manganese(IV) compound for which luminescence has been reported.
