Thiophene‐Extended Nickel Thiazoledithiolene: π‐Extended Fused‐Ring Metal Dithiolenes with Stabilized Frontier Orbitals

Fluorescence-free bis(dithiolene)nickel dyes for surface-enhanced resonance Raman imaging in the second near-infrared window

Second near-infrared window (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) imaging is one of the foremost optical imaging techniques. However, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based research in this optical region remains in its infancy, mainly because of a lack of suitable NIR-II Raman reporters. Herein, we report the first example of a nickel dithiolene complex as a NIR-II resonance Raman reporter with intense long wavelength absorption (ε = 9.58 × 104 m-1 cm-1 at 1007 nm), fluorescence-free features and ultrahigh affinity to noble metal surfaces with its eight sulfur atoms. Surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering nanoprobes constructed with such reporters enable high contrast and highly photostable lymph node imaging far superior to that possible with existing NIR-I and NIR-II SERS nanoprobes. The developed NIR-II nanoprobes allow deep optical penetration (8 mm) as well as in vivo SERS detection of deep-seated microtumors in mice.

Molecular Tuning in Diaryl-Capped Pyrrolo[2,3-d:5,4-d']bisthiazoles: Effects of Terminal Aryl Unit and Comparison to Dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole Analogues

A series of six conjugated oligomers consisting of a central pyrrolo[2,3-d:5,4-d']bisthiazole (PBTz) end-capped with either thienyl, furyl, or phenyl groups have been prepared from N-alkyl-and N-aryl-pyrrolo[2,3-d:5,4-d']bisthiazoles via Stille and Negishi cross-coupling. The full oligomeric series was thoroughly investigated via photophysical and electrochemical studies, in parallel with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, in order to correlate the cumulative effects of both aryl end-groups and N-functionalization on the resulting optical and electronic properties. Through comparison with the analogous dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole (DTP) materials, the effect of replacing DTP with PBTz on the material HOMO energy and visible light absorption is quantified.

Broadband near-IR absorbing Au-dithiolene complexes bearing redox-active oligothiophene ligands

A series of three homoleptic, monoanionic gold dithiolene complexes of oligothiophene ligands which coordinate via a central thiophene-3,4-dithiolate chelate are presented. The oligomer chains are three, five and seven thiophenes long and the complexes display hybrid optoelectronic properties featuring characteristics of both the oligothiophene chains and the delocalised metal dithiolene centre. The properties of the complexes have been characterised using a variety of spectroscopic and electrochemical methods complemented by computational studies. Solid state spectroelectrochemistry has revealed that upon oxidation these complexes display intense and broad absorption across the visible spectrum. In attempting to produce nickel analogues of these materials a single crystal of a photo-oxidised nickel dithiolene complex has also been isolated.
