Organometallic-Organic Hybrid Polymers Assembled from Pentaphosphaferrocene, Bipyridyl Linkers, and CuI Ions

Cu(I) Complexes Comprising tetrahedral Mo2 E2 or Mo2 PE units (E=P, As, Sb) as Chelating Ligands

Novel isomorphous tetranuclear complexes, [(dppf)Cu(μ3 ,η2 : 2 : 2 -E2 {CpMo(CO)2 }2 ]BF4 [E=P (1), As (4), Sb (5), (dppf=1,1'-bis-(diphenylphosphino)-ferrocene)] and [(dppf)Cu(μ3 ,η2 : 2 : 2 -PE{CpMo(CO)2 }2 ]BF4 [E=As (2), Sb(3)] were synthesized from the reactions between [(dppf)Cu(MeCN)2 ][BF4 ] and tetrahedral molybdenum complexes containing unsubstituted homo- and hetero-diatomic group-15 elements [(μ,η2 : 2 -E2 {CpMo(CO)2 }2 ] [E=P (A), As (D), Sb (E)] and [(μ,η2 : 2 -PE{CpMo(CO)2 }2 ] [E=As (B), Sb (C)], respectively. In all these products, the {Mo2 E2 } or {Mo2 PE} moieties coordinate the Cu(I) center via a rare side-on η2 -coordination mode. The X-ray structure analyses of [(dppf)Cu(μ3 ,η2 : 2 : 1 -PSb{CpMo(CO)2 }2 ][BF4 ] demonstrate, for the first time, the utilization of an η1 -coordination mode for the ligand complex C to coordinate to the Cu(I) center. All the products were characterized by X-ray crystallography, NMR and IR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and elemental analysis. Electrochemical studies also revealed the formation of 1-5, and, further, to understand the structure and bonding of the products, theoretical calculations using density functional theory (DFT) were conducted.

Mixed Organometallic-Organic Hybrid Assemblies Based on the Diarsene Complex [Cp2 Mo2 (CO)4 (μ,η2 -As2 )], AgI Salts and N-Donor Organic Molecules

The reaction of the organometallic diarsene complex [Cp2 Mo2 (CO)4 (η2 -As2 )] (1) with Ag[Al{OC(CF3 )3 }4 ] (Ag[TEF]) yielded the AgI monomer [Ag(η2 -1)3 ][TEF] (2). This compound exhibits dynamic behavior in solution, which allows directed selective synthesis of unprecedented organometallic-organic hybrid assemblies upon its reaction with N-donor organic molecules by a stepwise pathway, which is supported by DFT calculations. Accordingly, the reaction of 2 with 2,2'-bipyrimidine (L1) yielded the dicationic molecular compound [{(η2 -1)2 Ag}2 (μ-L1)][TEF]2 (3) or the 1D polymer [{(η2 -1)Ag}(μ-L1)]n [TEF]n (4) depending on the ratio of the reactants. However, its reactions with the pyridine-based linkers 4,4'-bipyridine (L2), 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (L3) and 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethyne (L4) allowed the formation of the 2D polymers [{(η2 -1)Ag}2 (μ-Lx)3 ]n [TEF]2n [Lx=L2 (5), L3 (6), L4 (7), respectively]. Additionally, this concept was extended to step-by-step one-pot reactions of 1, [Ag(CH3 CN)3 ][Al{OC(CF3 )2 (CCl3 )}4 ] ([Ag(CH3 CN)3 ][TEFCl ]) and linkers L2-L4 to produce the 2D polymers [{(η2 -1)Ag}2 (μ,Lx)3 ]n [TEFCl ]2n [Lx=L2 (8), L3 (9), L4 (10), respectively].

Discrete and polymeric organometallic-organic assemblies based on the diarsene complex [(Cp)2Mo2(CO)4(μ,η2-As2)], AgPF6 and N-donor organic molecules

The first mixed-ligand self-assembly reactions of the diarsene complex [Cp₂Mo₂(CO)₄(μ,η²-As₂)] and N-donor organic molecules in the presence of AgPF₆ allow for the synthesis of two discrete and four polymeric supramolecular aggregates.

Linking of CuI Units by Tetrahedral Mo2 E2 Complexes (E=P, As)

The reaction of [Cp2 Mo2 (CO)4 (μ,η2:2 -E2 )] (A: E=P, B: E=As, Cp=C5 H5 ) with the WCA-containing CuI salts ([Cu(CH3 CN)4 ][Al{OC(CF3 )3 }4 ] (CuTEF, C), [Cu(CH3 CN)4 ][BF4 ] (D) and [Cu(CH3 CN)3.5 ][FAl{OC6 F10 (C6 F5 )}3 ] (CuFAl, E)) affords seven unprecedented coordination compounds. Depending on the E2 ligand complex, the counter anion of the copper salt and the stoichiometry, four dinuclear copper dimers and three trinuclear copper compounds are accessible. The latter complexes reveal first linear Cu3 arrays linked by E2 units (E=P, As) coordinated in an η2:1:1 coordination mode. All compounds were characterized by X-ray crystallography, NMR and IR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and elemental analysis. To define the nature of the Cu⋅⋅⋅Cu⋅⋅⋅Cu interactions, DFT calculations were performed.

The Triple-Decker Complex [Cp*Fe(µ,η⁵:η⁵-P₅)Mo(CO)₃] as a Building Block in Coordination Chemistry

Although the triple-decker complex [Cp*Fe(µ,η⁵:η⁵-P₅)Mo(CO)₃] (2) was first reported 26 years ago, its reactivity has not yet been explored. Herein, we report a new high-yielding synthesis of 2 and the isolation of its new polymorph (2’). In addition, we study its reactivity towards Ag^I and Cu^I ions. The reaction of 2 with Ag[BF₄] selectively produces the coordination compound [Ag{Cp*Fe(µ,η⁵:η⁵-P₅)Mo(CO)₃}₂][BF₄] (3). Its reaction with Ag[TEF] and Cu[TEF] ([TEF]⁻ = [Al{OC(CF₃)₃}₄]⁻) leads to the selective formation of the complexes [Ag{Cp*Fe(µ,η⁵:η⁵-P₅)Mo(CO)₃}₂][TEF] (4) and [Cu{Cp*Fe(µ,η⁵:η⁵-P₅)Mo(CO)₃}₂][TEF] (5), respectively. The X-ray structures of compounds 3–5 each show an M^I ion (M^I = Ag^I, Cu^I) bridged by two P atoms from two triple-decker complexes (2). Additionally, four short M^I···CO distances (two to each triple-decker complex 2) participate in stabilizing the coordination sphere of the M^I ion. Evidently, the X-ray structure for compound 3 shows a weak interaction of the Ag^I ion with one fluorine atom of the counterion [BF₄]⁻. Such an Ag···F interaction does not exist for compound 4. These findings demonstrate the possibility of using triple-decker complex 2 as a ligand in coordination chemistry and opening a new perspective in the field of supramolecular chemistry of transition metal compounds with phosphorus-rich complexes.

Highly soluble Cu(i)-acetonitrile salts as building blocks for novel phosphorus-rich organometallic-inorganic compounds

The synthesis of the air-stable and highly soluble Cu(i)-acetonitrile salts [Cu(CH3CN)3.5][FAl] (1) ([FAl] = FAl{OC(C6F10)(C6F5)}3) and [Cu(CH3CN)4][TEF] (2) ([TEF] = Al{OC(CF3)3}4) is presented. Compound 1 reacts with the organometallic polyphosphorus complexes [Cp2Mo2(CO)4(η2-P2)] (A) and [(Cp*Fe(η5-P5)] (B) and salt 2 reacts with B to form one new (3) and three unprecedented (4-6) phosphorus-rich Cu(i) dimers with the general formulas [Cu2(μ,η1:η1-A)2(η2-A)2][FAl]2 (3), [Cu2(μ,η1:η1-A)2(η1-CH3CN)4][FAl]2 (4), [Cu2(μ,η1:η1-B)2(η1-CH3CN)4][FAl]2 (5) and [Cu2(μ,η1:η1-B)2(η1-CH3CN)4][TEF]2 (6).
