Excimer and Red Luminescence Due to Aggregation-Induced Emission in Naphthalene Based Zinc Phosphonate

Synthesis and Characterization of Two Novel Naphthalenediimide/Zinc Phosphonate Crystalline Materials Precipitated from Different Solvents

Hybrid naphthalenediimide/zinc phosphonate materials (NDI/Zn) were prepared by mixing solutions of N,N'-bis(2-phosphonoethyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalenediimide (PNDI) and zinc nitrate, resulting in the precipitation of the desired compounds. Samples precipitated from water and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) were produced. The obtained samples had the expected elemental composition, and the presence of naphthalenediimides (NDI) was ascertained by infrared and UV-visible spectroscopy. All the samples were crystalline, according to powder X-ray diffraction. Nitrogen adsorption isotherms showed the presence of porosity in the NDI/Zn samples. Mesopores with a diameter = 4.1 nm were present in the sample from DMF, with total pore volume reaching 0.13 cm3/g.

Chemometrics-assisted mechanism study of the room-temperature phosphorescence on nanoscopic boronate assemblies

Boronate assemblies, derived from benzene-1,4-diboronic acid, showed room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) in both the solid-state and dispersions, being quite sensitive to the preparation conditions. Our chemometrics-assisted quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) analysis between the nanostructure and RTP behavior of boronate assemblies led us not only to understand their RTP mechanism but also to predict the RTP properties of unknown assemblies from the PXRD patterns.

Chiral recognition coupled with chemometrics using boronate ensembles containing D-π-A cyanostilbenes

Two types of boronic acid-appended D-π-A cyanostilbenes were synthesized to produce chiral boronate ensembles via dehydration with tartaric acid. The aggregation-induced high sensitivity and positional effect of the CN group on the emission properties allowed for chemometrics-coupled chiral recognition.

Selective anions mediated fluorescence "turn-on", aggregation induced emission (AIE) and lysozyme targeting properties of pyrene-naphthalene sulphonyl conjugate

We have designed and synthesized a novel pyrene-naphthalene sulphonyl conjugate, 1-((1Z)-(4-((Z)-4-(pyrene-1-yl)methyleneamino)phenylsulfonyl)phenylimino)methyl)naphthalene-2-ol (PSN) through a facile two-step reactions. It was characterized by various spectral techniques. Fluorescence spectral studies showed that compound PSN featured fluorescence enhancement upon increasing the water content in THF. This can be attributed to the phenomena of aggregated induced emission (AIE), which is confirmed by SEM and AFM studies, due to the restriction of CHN isomerization of PSN. The anion sensing of PSN was examined with various anions. Among these anions, H₂PO₄^- and F^- ions were selectively sensing with a low detection limit of 3.52 × 10^-7 M and 7.23 × 10^-7 M, respectively, and an obvious color change from yellow to orange was observed by the naked eye. The mechanism of sensing involved the formation of hydrogen bonding interaction between O-H group of PSN and H₂PO₄^-/ F^- ions. The binding of PSN with LYZ was also examined by docking studies, which shows that H-bonding and hydrophobic interactions play crucial roles for the interaction of LYZ toward PSN.

Optimizing the Proton Conductivity of Fe-Diphosphonates by Increasing the Relative Number of Protons and Carrier Densities

Proton conductive materials have attracted extensive interest in recent years due to their fascinating applications in sensors, batteries, and proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Herein, two Fe-diphosphonate chains (H₄-BAPEN)_0.5·[Fe^III(H-HEDP)(HEDP)_0.5(H₂O)] (1) and (H₄-TETA)₂·[Fe^III₂Fe^II(H-HEDP)₂(HEDP)₂(OH)₂]·2H₂O (2) (HEDP = 1-hydroxyethylidenediphosphonate, BAPEN = 1,2-bis(3-aminopropylamino)ethane, and TETA = triethylenetetramine) with different templating agents were prepared by hydrothermal reactions. The valence states of the Fe centers were demonstrated by ⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer spectra at 100 K, with a high-spin Fe^III state for 1 and mixed high-spin Fe^III/Fe^II states for 2. Their magnetic properties were determined, which featured strong antiferromagnetic couplings in the chain. Importantly, the proton conductivity of both compounds at 100% relative humidity was explored at different temperatures, with 2.79 × 10^-4 S cm^-1 at 80 °C for 1 and 7.55 × 10^-4 S cm^-1 at 45 °C for 2, respectively. This work provides an opportunity for improving proton conductive properties by increasing the relative number of protons and the carrier density using protonated flexible aliphatic amines.

M(H2O)(PO3C10H6OH)·(H2O)0.5 (M = Co, Mn, Zn, Cu): a new series of layered metallophosphonate compounds obtained from 6-hydroxy-2-naphthylphosphonic acid

Four new metallophosphonates M(H₂O)(PO₃C₁₀H₆OH)·(H₂O)_0.5 (M = Mn, Co, Cu, Zn) were obtained as single crystal and polycrystalline powders by hydrothermal synthesis from the precursors 6-hydroxy-2-naphthylphosphonic acid and the corresponding metal salts. These analogous hybrids crystalized in the space group P12₁/c1 in a lamellar structure. Their layered structures consisted of inorganic [M(H₂O)(PO₃C)] layers stacked with organic bilayers of 6-hydroxy-2-naphthyl moieties "HO-C₁₀H₆" and free water molecules. Their structures were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction and confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction and Le Bail refinement for the powder sample. The removal of water upon heating at 250 °C was studied by thermogravimetric analysis and temperature-dependent powder X-ray diffraction. Their magnetic properties were studied by SQUID magnetometry and show antiferromagnetic behavior for the Co analogue and the occurrence of a canted antiferromagnetic order at T_N = 12.2 K for the Mn analogue. The Cu compound displayed an unprecedented ferromagnetic behavior. Their absorption and luminescence properties were investigated and revealed that the ligand and the compounds displayed a common behavior below a wavelength of 400 nm. Specific absorption bands were found in the compounds with Co²⁺ and Cu²⁺ at 539 nm and 849 nm, respectively. Moreover, particular luminescence bands were found for the compounds with Mn²⁺, Co²⁺ and Zn²⁺ at 598 nm, 551 nm and 530 and 611 nm, respectively.

Novel assemblies based on oligonucleotides containing intercalating nucleic acid monomers

This is the first report exploring the capability of twisted intercalating nucleic acid (TINA) and naphthalene-functionalized non-nucleosidic linkers to stabilize and engage in double-helical structures. Four designs were studied with respect to the formation of duplexes and/or other types of self-assemblies. One of the constructs involving TINA provides a thermostable duplex. The biophysical properties of the individual constructs were investigated by UV thermal melting experiments, circular dichroism, and fluorescence emission spectroscopy. Molecular modeling studies were performed in attempts of explaining the biophysical measurements for the duplex based on the TINA-containing oligonucleotide strands.

One-Dimensional Fluorene-Based Co(II) Phosphonate Co(H2O)2PO3C–C12H9·H2O: Structure and Magnetism

A new Co(II) phosphonate, Co(H2O)2PO3C–C12H9·H2O, has been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. The monoclinic P21/c structure of this organic–inorganic hybrid consists of isolated perovskite-type chains of corner-shared CoO4(H2O)2 octahedra interconnected via phosphonate groups. The unique one-dimensional structure of this phase is closely related to the single-chain magnet (SCM) phosphonate Co(H2L)(H2O), with L = 4-Me-C6H4-CH2N(CPO3H2)2, that contains isolated chains of CoO5N octahedra. Like the latter, this hybrid exhibits 1D antiferromagnetic interactions and the possibility of an effective pseudo spin contribution due to spin canting at low temperature, but, in contrast, is not an SCM. This different magnetic behavior is explained by the different geometry of the octahedral chains and by the possible existence of weak antiferromagnetic interactions between the chains. This opens the route to the investigation of a large series of compounds by tuning the chemical composition and structure of the phosphonic acid used as organic precursor of hybrid materials.
