Halide‐Substituted Phosphacyclohexadienyl Iron Complexes: Covalent Structures vs. Ion Pairs

Monofluorophos-Metal Complexes: Ripe for Future Discoveries in Homogeneous Catalysis

The discovery that cyclic (ArO)2PF can support Rh-catalysts for hydroformylation with significant advantages in tuning regioselectivity transformed the study of metal complexes of monofluorophos ligands from one of primarily academic interest to one with potentially important applications in catalysis. In this review, the syntheses of monofluorophosphites, (RO)2PF, and monofluorophosphines, R2PF, are discussed and the factors that control the kinetic stability of these ligands to hydrolysis and disproportionation are set out. A survey of the coordination chemistry of these two classes of monofluorophos ligands with d-block metals is presented, emphasising the bonding of the fluorophos to d-block metals, predominantly in low oxidation states. The application of monofluorophos ligands in homogeneous catalysis (especially hydroformylation and hydrocyanation) is discussed, and it is argued that there is great potential for monofluorophos complexes in future catalytic applications.

Halogenation and Nucleophilic Quenching: Two Routes to E-X Bond Formation in Cobalt Triple-Decker Complexes (E=As, P; X=F, Cl, Br, I)

The oxidation of [(Cp'''Co)2 (μ,η2  : η2 -E2 )2 ] (E=As (1), P (2); Cp'''=1,2,4-tri(tert-butyl)cyclopentadienyl) with halogens or halogen sources (I2 , PBr5 , PCl5 ) was investigated. For the arsenic derivative, the ionic compounds [(Cp'''Co)2 (μ,η4  : η4 -As4 X)][Y] (X=I, Y=[As6 I8 ]0.5 (3 a), Y=[Co2 Cl6-n In ]0.5 (n=0, 2, 4; 3 b); X=Br, Y=[Co2 Br6 ]0.5 (4); X=Cl, Y=[Co2 Cl6 ]0.5 (5)) were isolated. The oxidation of the phosphorus analogue 2 with bromine and chlorine sources yielded the ionic complexes [(Cp'''Co)2 (μ-PBr2 )2 (μ-Br)][Co2 Br6 ]0.5 (6 a), [(Cp'''Co)2 (μ-PCl2 )2 (μ-Cl)][Co2 Cl6 ]0.5 (6 b) and the neutral species [(Cp'''Co)2 (μ-PCl2 )(μ-PCl)(μ,η1  : η1 -P2 Cl3 ] (7), respectively. As an alternative approach, quenching of the dications [(Cp'''Co)2 (μ,η4  : η4 -E4 )][TEF]2 (TEF=[Al{OC(CF3 )3 }4 ]- , E=As (8), P (9)) with KI yielded [(Cp'''Co)2 (μ,η4  : η4 -As4 I)][I] (10), representing the homologue of 3, and the neutral complex [(Cp'''Co)(Cp'''CoI2 )(μ,η4  : η1 -P4 )] (11), respectively. The use of [(CH3 )4 N]F instead of KI leads to the formation of [(Cp'''Co)2 (μ-PF2 )(μ,η2  : η1  : η1 -P3 F2 )] (12) and 2, thereby revealing synthetic access to polyphosphorus compounds bearing P-F groups and avoiding the use of very strong fluorinating reagents, such as XeF2 , that are difficult to control.

A Phosphinine-Derived 1-Phospha-7-Bora-Norbornadiene: Frustrated Lewis Pair Type Activation of Triple Bonds

Salt metathesis of 1-methyl-2,4,6-triphenylphosphacyclohexadienyl lithium and chlorobis(pentafluorophenyl)borane affords a 1-phospha-7-bora-norbornadiene derivative 2. The C≡N triple bonds of nitriles insert into the P-B bond of 2 with concomitant C-B bond cleavage, whereas the C≡C bonds of phenylacetylenes react with 2 to form λ4 -phosphabarrelenes. Even though 2 must formally be regarded as a classical Lewis adduct, the C≡N and C≡C activation processes observed (and the mild conditions under which they occur) are reminiscent of the reactivity of frustrated Lewis pairs. Indeed, NMR and computational studies give insight into the mechanism of the reactions and reveal the labile nature of the phosphorus-boron bond in 2, which is also suggested by detailed NMR spectroscopic studies on this compound. Nitrile insertion is thus preceded by ring opening of the bicycle of 2 through P-B bond splitting with a low energy barrier. By contrast, the reaction with alkynes involves formation of a reactive zwitterionic methylphosphininium borate intermediate, which readily undergoes alkyne 1,4-addition.

Self-Supplied Liquid Injection Field Desorption/Ionization Ion Source for an Orthogonal Time-of-Flight Instrument

A new implementation of a dedicated ion source for field ionization (FI), field desorption (FD), and liquid injection field desorption/ionization (LIFDI) for the JEOL AccuTOF GC series of orthogonal-acceleration time-of-flight instruments is presented. In contrast to existing implementations, this third-party LIFDI probe and source combination does not require the exchange of the entire ion source comprising ion source block and lens stack to switch from electron ionization (EI) to LIFDI. Rather, the methods may be swapped conveniently by only exchanging the ion source block for a mechanical probe guide and inserting the LIFDI probe in place of the standard direct insertion probe (DIP) via the vacuum lock. Further, this LIFDI setup does not require any changes of the electronics or software of the AccuTOF mass spectrometer because it is self-supplied in terms of power supply, observation optics, and computer control. The setup offers advanced FI/FD/LIFDI control features such as emission-controlled emitter heating current and emitter flash baking during elongated runs as required for gas chromatography-FI-mass spectrometry (MS). The LIFDI source and probe and its operation are reported in detail. FI spectra of the volatile analytes toluene, heptane, and pentafluoroiodobenzene are presented. LIFDI operation is demonstrated for the analysis of the saturated hydrocarbon dotriacontane and the low-mass hydrocarbon polymers polystyrene 484 and polystyrene 1050. Further, the air-sensitive 2nd-generation Hoveyda-Grubbs catalyst is analyzed by LIFDI-MS. For comparison with long-established LIFDI instrumentation, some of the spectra obtained with the new setup are also compared with those from a double-focusing magnetic sector instrument.

Facile C=O Bond Splitting of Carbon Dioxide Induced by Metal-Ligand Cooperativity in a Phosphinine Iron(0) Complex

New iron complexes [Cp*FeL]⁻ (1‐σ and 1‐π, Cp*=C₅Me₅) containing the chelating phosphinine ligand 2‐(2′‐pyridyl)‐4,6‐diphenylphosphinine (L) have been prepared, and found to undergo facile reaction with CO₂ under ambient conditions. The outcome of this reaction depends on the coordination mode of the versatile ligand L. Interaction of CO₂ with the isomer 1‐π, in which L binds to Fe through the phosphinine moiety in an η⁵ fashion, leads to the formation of 3‐π, in which CO₂ has undergone electrophilic addition to the phosphinine group. In contrast, interaction with 1‐σ—in which L acts as a σ‐chelating [P,N] ligand—leads to product 3‐σ in which one C=O bond has been completely broken. Such CO₂ cleavage reactions are extremely rare for late 3d metals, and this represents the first such example mediated by a single Fe centre.
