Molybdenum-Mediated Insertion of Ketones into the P-P bond of cyclo-(P5 Ph5 ) and Formation of Trinuclear Molybdenum Complexes

The reaction of cyclopentaphosphine cyclo-(P5 Ph5 ) (1) with ketones (acetone and cyclooctanone) in the presence of [Mo(CO)4 (cod)] (cod=cycloocta-1,5-diene) led to air-stable trinuclear complexes in which the bis-phosphanido ligands (PPh-PPh-PPh-PPh-CMe2 O-PPh)2- (complex 2) and (PPh-PPh-PPh-PPh-C(CH2 )7 O-PPh)2- (complex 3) bridge a Mo(CO)3 -Mo(CO)3 unit. This extends the reaction of 1 with transition metal carbonyl complexes to further substrates and represents the first examples of insertion of carbonyl compounds into the P-P bond of cyclic oligophosphorus compounds. Complexes 2 and 3 have been characterized by 31 P NMR spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Furthermore, the thermal properties of the obtained complexes have been studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and fast scanning calorimetry (FSC).

Hydrogen/Halogen Exchange of Phosphines for the Rapid Formation of Cyclopolyphosphines

The hydrogen/halogen exchange of phosphines has been exploited to establish a truly useable substrate scope and straightforward methodology for the formation of cyclopolyphosphines. Starting from a single dichlorophosphine, a sacrificial proton "donor phosphine" makes the rapid, mild synthesis of cyclopolyphosphines possible: reactions are complete within 10 min at room temperature. Novel (aryl)cyclopentaphosphines (ArP)₅ have been formed in good conversion, with the crystal structures presented. The use of catalytic quantities of iron(III) acetylacetonate provides significant improvements in conversion in the context of diphosphine (Ar₂P)₂ and alkyl-substituted cyclotetra- or cyclopentaphosphine ((AlkylP)_n, where n = 4 or 5) formation. Both iron-free and iron-mediated reactions show high levels of selectivity for one specific ring size. Finally, investigations into the reactivity of Fe(acac)₃ suggest that the iron species is acting as a sink for the hydrochloric acid byproduct of the reaction.

Coordination Behavior of a P4 -Butterfly Complex towards Transition Metal Lewis Acids: Preservation versus Rearrangement

The reactivity of the P4 butterfly complex [{Cp'''Fe(CO)2 }2 (μ,η1:1 -P4 )] (1, Cp'''=η5 -C5 H2 tBu3 ) towards divalent Co, Ni and Zn salts is investigated. The reaction with the bromide salts leads to [{Cp'''Fe(CO)2 }2 (μ3 ,η2:1:1 -P4 ){MBr2 }] (M=Co (2Co), Ni (2Ni), Zn (2Zn)) in which the P4 butterfly scaffold is preserved. The use of the weakly ligated Co complex [Co(NCCH3 )6 ][SbF6 ]2 , results in the formation of [{(Cp'''Fe(CO)2 )2 (μ3 ,η4:1:1 -P4 )}2 Co][SbF6 ]3 (3), which represents the second example of a homoleptic-like octaphospha-metalla-sandwich complex. The formation of the threefold positively charged complex 3 occurs via redox processes, which among others also enables the formation of [{Cp'''Fe(CO)2 }4 (μ5 ,η4:1:1:1:1 -P8 ){Co(CO)2 }][SbF6 ] (4), bearing a rare octaphosphabicyclo[3.3.0]octane unit as a ligand. On the other hand, the reaction with [Zn(NCCH3 )4 ][PF6 ]2 yields the spiro complex [{(Cp'''Fe(CO)2 )2 (μ3 ,η2:1:1 -P4 )}2 Zn][PF6 ]2 (5) under preservation of the initial structural motif.
