Abstract
A new ligand is designed and synthesized in two steps starting from α-formyl 3-pyrrolyl BODIPY. In the first step, the α-formyl 3-pyrrolyl BODIPY was condensed with 1,2-diaminobenzene in toluene at reflux and afforded α-benzimidazole 3-pyrrolyl BODIPY in 16% yield. In the second step, α-benzimidazole 3-pyrrolyl BODIPY was decomplexed upon being treated with Lewis acid AlCl3 and afforded the desired ligand α-benzimidazole 9-pyrrolyl dipyrromethene. However, the ligand was not very stable and reacted further with PdCl2 in CH3CN for 1 h at reflux followed by recrystallization and afforded a novel bis-palladium complex of α-benzimidazole 9-pyrrolyl dipyrromethene in 36% yield. The bis-palladium complex was characterized and studied by high-resolution mass spectrometry, one- and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray crystallography, absorption, and density functional theory/time-dependent DFT (DFT/TD-DFT) studies. The X-ray structure revealed that two ligands and two Pd(II) ions were involved in forming a unique complex in which each Pd(II) ion was coordinated to three pyrrole N atoms of the first ligand and the benzimidazole N atom of the second ligand in a distorted square planar geometry. The absorption spectrum of the bis-palladium complex shows ill-defined, broad, and less intense bands in the region of 345-425 nm along with split bands in the higher-wavelength region of 600-630 nm. The bis-palladium complex was nonfluorescent, and the results of DFT/TD-DFT studies were in agreement with the experimental observations. The preliminary studies indicated that the bis-palladium complex can act as an efficient catalyst for coupling different aryl bromides with phenylboronic acid.

Abstract
Derivatives of a novel pyrrole-containing Schiff base ligand system (called "pyrrophen") are presented which feature substituted phenylene linkers (R1 = R2 = H (H2L1); R1 = R2 = CH3 (H2L2)) and a binding pocket modeled after macrocyclic species. These ligands bind neutral CH3OH in the solid state through pyrrolic hydrogen-bonding. The interaction of the uranyl cation (UO22+) and H2L1-2 yields planar hexagonal bipyramdial uranyl complexes, while the Cu2+ and Zn2+ complexes were found to self-assemble as dinuclear helicate complexes (M2L2) with H2L1 under identical conditions. The favorable binding of UO22+ over Zn2+ provides insight into the molecular recognition of uranyl over other metal species. Structural features of these complexes are examined with special attention to features of the UO22+ coordination environment which distinguish them from other related salophen and porphyrinoid complexes.

Abstract
Copper-catalyzed cycloisomerization of 3-iminocyclopropenes for synthesis of pyrroles has been developed. The reaction allows regioselective construction of pyrroles with various substitution patterns, including fully substituted pyrroles. The method was successfully applied to synthesis of steroidal pyrroles as well as a N-fused pyrrole.

Abstract
Sensing of metal ions and anions is of great importance because of their widespread distribution in environmental systems and biological processes. Colorimetric and fluorescent chemosensors based on organic molecular species have been demonstrated to be effective for the detection of various ions and possess the significant advantages of low cost, high sensitivity, and convenient implementation. Of the available classes of organic molecules, porphyrin analogues possess inherently many advantageous features, making them suitable for the design of ion chemosensors, with the targeted sensing behavior achieved and easily modulated based on their following characteristics: (1) NH moieties properly disposed for binding of anions through cooperative hydrogen-bonding interactions; (2) multiple pyrrolic N atoms or other heteroatoms for selectively chelating metal ions; (3) variability of macrocycle size and peripheral substitution for modulation of ion selectivity and sensitivity; and (4) tunable near-infrared emission and good biocompatibility. In this Review, design strategies, sensing mechanisms, and sensing performance of ion chemosensors based on porphyrin analogues are described by use of extensive examples. Ion chemosensors based on normal porphyrins and linear oligopyrroles are also briefly described. This Review provides valuable information for researchers of related areas and thus may inspire the development of more practical and effective approaches for designing high-performance ion chemosensors based on porphyrin analogues and other relevant compounds.

Abstract
Ruthenium(II) complexes of oligo(bipyridine-phenyl triazole)s were synthesized as receptors for anions. The receptors, which are partially preorganized through metal-ligand interactions, can fold into a helical conformation to bind chloride, bromide, iodide, or nitrate anions in their inner cavities in acetone or competitive H-bonding media such as 5% water in acetone and DMSO. The short oligomer 1 can sandwich the studied anions with high affinity in acetone. Addition of 5% water to acetone results in overall decreases in the binding strength due to the binding competition from water, but does not change the basic binding mode. The highly competitive H-bonding solvent DMSO causes the receptor-anion interactions to become even weaker. However, in DMSO, the short receptor 1 is still able to bind the halide anions with moderate affinities in a 1:1 stoichiometry, whereas the longer oligomer 2 forms double-strand helices with an anion wrapped inside for all anions investigated so far.

Abstract
A strategy for the conversion of homometallic coordination networks into mixed metal-organic frameworks (MM'MOFs) is proposed. Ni(II) complexes of dipyrrin (dpm) ligands bearing peripheral pyridyl or imidazolyl units have been shown to self-assemble into coordination polymers with the metal cation in an octahedral environment coordinated to two bis-pyrrolic chelates and two neutral monodentate coordinating units such as pyridyl or imidazolyl moieties. Taking advantage of the chelate effect, the two monodentate units may be replaced by a diimine ligand leading to the disassembly of the networks by the formation of discrete soluble complexes. The latter can be employed as metallatectons for the construction of heterometallic architectures upon reaction with a secondary metal salt. This approach was applied using either 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) or 2,2'-bipyrimidine (bpm) as chelates leading to a series of mono- and binuclear metallatectons of the (phen)Ni(dpm)2 and (bpm)[Ni(dpm)2]2 type. Subsequent assembly with CdCl2 afforded either interpenetrated 2D grid-type architectures or 3D MM'MOFs.

Abstract
This short review article summarizes recent progress in research on various stimuli-responsive circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties derived from π-conjugated molecules and related materials. As representative examples, assembled structures of chiral π-conjugated polymers and molecules showed tunable CPL resulting from the enhancement of chirality induction by aggregation. Fascinating CPL-active species, pyrrole-based anion-responsive π-conjugated molecules exhibiting CPL induced by anion binding and ion pairing, are also discussed.

Abstract
Luminescent cyclometalated iridium complexes based on pyridyl appended dipyrrin ligands were prepared and characterized both in the solid state and in solution. The functionalization of the peripheral pyridyl moiety causes dramatic changes on the emission properties of both mono- and hetero- binuclear complexes. A detailed photophysical investigation of the two mononuclear derivatives of the [(Ppy)(2)Ir(dpm-py)] family (Ppy=2-phenylpyridine, dpm-py=5-(4-pyridyl)dipyrrin) was carried out. Introduction of methyl groups at the 3 and 5 positions on the pyridyl unit diminishes the non-radiative rate constant by locking the peripheral pyridyl group orthogonally to the dipyrrinato plane. Thus, they limit the rotational degree of freedom, as well as the charge-transfer character of the excited state. The coordination of these two complexes to a cyclometalated [(dppy)Pt] fragment (dppy=2,6-diphenylpyridine) led to the formation of binuclear species in which the iridium and platinum complexes behave as acceptors and donors, respectively. In these heterobinuclear compounds, the methyl groups do not influence the energy transfer efficiency, which is estimated to be above 90 %. However, they do limit the charge-transfer character of the acceptor's excited state, as well as its rotational degree of freedom, thus avoiding the detrimental effect upon the photophysical performance.

Abstract
This critical review is dedicated to the anion complexation chemistry of amide- and urea-functionalized (benzo)pyrroles, such as pyrroles, indoles, carbazoles, isoindoles, naphthalenodipyrroles and benzodipyrroles. It provides a comprehensive overview of these simple and neutral anion sensors from the first examples up to very recent studies. There is a discussion of a gradual progress made over time, often based on careful analysis of the properties of former generations that have subsequently led to obtaining excellent effectivities and selectivities. The influence of these species on other fields of chemistry and their applications there are also discussed (57 references).

Abstract
Triazacryptand (TAC)-based fluorescent K+ sensors have broad biomedical utility, yet their advancement has been hindered because of their challenging synthesis. Herein, an efficient synthesis is reported that delivers a didesmethyl tri-azacryptand (ddTAC) K+ sensor in twofold fewer steps and ninefold higher overall yield than the original TAC synthesis. Our synthesis utilizes a C-O dianionic oxidative macrocyclization and reports new examples of aminoarylations and a microwave route to xanthythilium chromophores. The K+ sensitivity and selectivity of the ddTAC-based sensor are comparable to the TAC-based sensor.
