Abstract
A polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon displaying twelve edge nitrogen centers for a 42 π-electron system is reported. This compound was synthesized via Sonogashira coupling of pyrimidine precursors, [2+2+2] cycloaddition of bis(aryl) alkynes, and anionic cyclodehydrogenation. Spectroscopy, electrochemistry, and computational results suggest a narrowing of the HOMO-LUMO gap compared to the N-free analogue. Metal coordination affects the optical properties of the extended π system.

Abstract
We report a simple and atom-efficient method for the synthesis of bithiophene-fused isoquinolines by iridium-catalyzed [2 + 2 + 2] cycloaddition of bithiophene-linked diynes with nitriles. All three structural isomers of bithiophene-linked diynes underwent [2 + 2 + 2] cycloaddition, and the trend in the reactivity for cycloaddition was diyne 1 = diyne 3 > diyne 2. Dibenzothiophene-linked diyne also reacted with nitriles to form a variety of cycloadducts. Cycloaddition of bithiophene-linked diynes with alkynes and an isocyanate formed naphthodithiophenes and a 2-pyridone derivative, respectively. Cycloadducts bearing a 2-aminopyridine moiety and benzothiophene rings showed intense fluorescence at around 530 nm and gave a fluorescence quantum yield of 0.44. Furthermore, quantum chemical calculations provided insight into the origin of the difference in reactivity of three bithiophene-linked diynes. The different reactivities of the three diynes 1-3 are believed to originate from the step where an iridacyclopentadiene reacts with a coordinated nitrile to form azairidabicyclo[3.2.0]heptatriene. HOMOs of iridacyclopentadiene play a decisive role in this step.

Abstract
A convenient method for the ruthenium-catalyzed synthesis of benzo[c]naphthyridinone derivatives is reported. The [2+2+2] cycloaddition from various mono- and disubstituted 1,7-diynes and cyanamides provided benzo[c][2,7]naphthyridinones as major products and benzo[c][2,6]naphthyridinones as minor ones in yields of ≤79% and regioselectivities of ≤99:1. This method is amenable to internal and terminal diynes and a number of cyanamides with diverse functional group tolerance.

Abstract
Ni(COD)2-catalyzed cycloaddition reactions to access pyridines have been extensively studied. However, this catalyst typically requires drying procedures and inert-atmosphere techniques for the reactions. Herein, we report operationally simple nickel(0) catalysis to access substituted pyridines from various nitriles and 1,6-diynes without the aid of air-free techniques. The Ni-Xantphos-based catalytic manifold is tolerant to air, moisture, and heat while promoting the [2 + 2 + 2] cycloaddition reactions with high reaction yields and broad substrate scope. In addition, we disclose that not only the steric effect but also the frontier molecular orbital interactions can play a critical role in determining the regiochemical outcome of nickel-catalyzed [2 + 2 + 2] cycloaddition for the synthesis of substituted pyridines.

Abstract
The transition-metal-catalyzed [2+2+2] cycloaddition of nitriles and alkynes is an established synthetic approach to pyridines; however, these cycloadditions often rely on the use of tethered diynes or cyanoalkynes as one of the reactants. Thus, examples of efficient, fully intermolecular catalytic [2+2+2] pyridine synthesis, especially those employing unactivated nitriles and internal alkynes leading to pentasubstituted pyridines, remain scarce. Herein, we report on simple and inexpensive catalytic systems based on cobalt(II) iodide, 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane, and Zn that promote [2+2+2] cycloaddition of various nitriles and diarylacetylenes for the synthesis of a broad range of polyarylated pyridines. DFT studies support a reaction pathway involving oxidative coupling of two alkynes, insertion of the nitrile into a cobaltacyclopentadiene, and C-N reductive elimination. The resulting tetra- and pentaarylpyridines serve as precursors to hitherto unprecedented nitrogen-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons via mechanochemically assisted multifold reductive cyclodehydrogenation.

Abstract
Triflic acid (10 mol%) catalyzes the highly regioselective [2 + 2 + 2] cycloaddition between two cyanamides and one ynamide to grant the 2,4,6-triaminopyrimidine core. The developed synthetic method is effective for the preparation of a family of the diversely substituted heterocyclic products (30 examples; yields up to 94%). The synthesis can be easily scaled up and conducted in gram quantities. As demonstrated by the post-functionalizations involving the amino-substituents, the obtained heterocycles represent a useful platform for the construction of miscellaneous pyrimidine-based frameworks. The performed density functional theory calculations verified a particular role of H+, functioning as an electrophilic activator, in the regioselectivity of the cycloaddition.

An original and mild synthetic route for the preparation of novel azafluorenones and derivatives via a ruthenium-mediated [2 + 2 + 2] cycloaddition of α,ω-diynes and cyanamides has been developed. This atom-economical catalytic process demonstrated remarkable regioselectivities to access fluorescent azafluorenone derivatives. The photophysical properties of azafluorenone derivatives have been evaluated, and photoluminescence phenomena at solid and liquid states have been highlighted.

Abstract
CuI-catalyzed cycloaddition (CA) of the ketonitrones, Ph2C=N+(R')O- (R' = Me, CH2Ph), to the disubstituted cyanamides, NCNR2 (R = Me2, Et2, (CH2)4, (CH2)5, (CH2)4O, C9H10, (CH2Ph)2, Ph(Me)), gives the corresponding 5-amino-substituted 2,3-dihydro-1,2,4-oxadiazoles (15 examples) in good to moderate yields. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions (CH2Cl2, RT or 45 °C) and requires 10 mol % of [Cu(NCMe)4](BF4) as the catalyst. The somewhat reduced yields are due to the individual properties of 2,3-dihydro-1,2,4-oxadiazoles, which easily undergo ring opening via N-O bond splitting. Results of density functional theory calculations reveal that the CA of ketonitrones to CuI-bound cyanamides is a concerted process, and the copper-catalyzed reaction is controlled by the predominant contribution of the HOMOdipole-LUMOdipolarophile interaction (group I by Sustmann's classification). The metal-involving process is much more asynchronous and profitable from both kinetic and thermodynamic viewpoints than the hypothetical metal-free reaction.

Abstract
A one-pot N-cyanation of secondary amines has been developed using trichloroacetonitrile as an inexpensive cyano source. A diverse range of cyclic and acyclic secondary amines can be readily transformed into the corresponding cyanamides in good isolated yields, with the method successfully utilized in the final synthetic step of a biologically active rolipram-derived cyanamide. This approach exhibits distinct selectivity when compared to the use of highly toxic cyanogen bromide.

Abstract
Transition-metal catalysis has revolutionized the field of organic synthesis by facilitating the construction of complex organic molecules in a highly efficient manner. Although these catalysts are typically based on precious metals, researchers have made great strides in discovering new base metal catalysts over the past decade. This Account describes our efforts in this area and details the development of versatile Ni complexes that catalyze a variety of cycloaddition reactions to afford interesting carbocycles and heterocycles. First, we describe our early work in investigating the efficacy of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands in Ni-catalyzed cycloaddition reactions with carbon dioxide and isocyanate. The use of sterically hindered, electron donating NHC ligands in these reactions significantly improved the substrate scope as well as reaction conditions in the syntheses of a variety of pyrones and pyridones. The high reactivity and versatility of these unique Ni(NHC) catalytic systems allowed us to develop unprecedented Ni-catalyzed cycloadditions that were unexplored due to the inefficacy of early Ni catalysts to promote hetero-oxidative coupling steps. We describe the development and mechanistic analysis of Ni/NHC catalysts that couple diynes and nitriles to form pyridines. Kinetic studies and stoichiometric reactions confirmed a hetero-oxidative coupling pathway associated with this Ni-catalyzed cycloaddition. We then describe a series of new substrates for Ni-catalyzed cycloaddition reactions such as vinylcyclopropanes, aldehydes, ketones, tropones, 3-azetidinones, and 3-oxetanones. In reactions with vinycyclopropanes and tropones, DFT calculations reveal noteworthy mechanistic steps such as a C-C σ-bond activation and an 8π-insertion of vinylcyclopropane and tropone, respectively. Similarly, the cycloaddition of 3-azetidinones and 3-oxetanones also requires Ni-catalyzed C-C σ-bond activation to form N- and O-containing heterocycles.

Abstract

Density
functional theory (DFT) calculations with B3LYP and M06
functionals elucidated the reactivities of alkynes and Z/E selectivity of cyclodecatriene products in the
Ni-catalyzed [4 + 4 + 2] cycloadditions of dienes and alkynes. The
Ni-mediated oxidative cyclization of butadienes determines the Z/E selectivity. Only the oxidative cyclization
of one s-cis to one s-trans butadiene
is facile and exergonic, leading to the observed 1Z,4Z,8E-cyclodecatriene product.
The same step with two s-cis or s-trans butadienes is either kinetically or thermodynamically unfavorable,
and the 1Z,4E,8E- and 1Z,4Z,8Z-cyclodecatriene isomers are not observed in experiments. In addition,
the competition between the desired cooligomerization and [2 + 2 +
2] cycloadditions of alkynes depends on the coordination of alkynes.
With either electron-deficient alkynes or alkynes with free hydroxyl
groups, the coordination of alkynes is stronger than that of dienes,
and alkyne trimerization prevails. With alkyl-substituted alkynes,
the generation of alkyne-coordinated nickel complex is much less favorable,
and the [4 + 4 + 2] cycloaddition occurs.

Abstract
Several cycloaddition catalysts and reagents were surveyed for their effectiveness toward cyclizing alkynenitriles with cyanamides. Catalytic amounts of FeI2, (iPr)PDAI and Zn were found to effectively catalyze the [2+2+2] cycloaddition of a variety of cyanamides and alkynenitriles to afford bicyclic 2-aminopyrimidines.

Abstract
Bleach oxidizes trimethylsilyl cyanide to generate an electrophilic cyanating reagent that readily reacts with an amine nucleophile. This oxidative N-cyanation reaction allows for the preparation of disubstituted cyanamides from amines without using highly toxic cyanogen halides.
