Abstract
Anodic cyclization reactions can provide a versatile method for converting newly obtained chiral lactols to densely functionalized cyclic building blocks. The method works by first converting the lactol into an electron-rich olefin and then oxidatively generating a radical cation that is trapped by a nucleophile. Historically, such reactions have benefited from the use of less polar radical cations when the trapping nucleophile is a heteroatom and more polar radical cations when the reaction forms C-C bonds. This forced one to optimize underperforming reactions by resynthesizing the substrate. Here, we show that by taking advantage of methods that serve to drive a reversible initial cyclization reaction toward the product, this dichotomy and need to manipulate the substrate can be avoided. Two such methods were utilized: a faster second oxidation step and a mediated electrolysis. Both led to successful cyclizations using a polar radical cation and heteroatom nucleophiles.

Abstract
We report the oxidative dimerization reaction of siloxydienes derived from simple enones that creates a new gamma-gamma (γ-γ) C-C bond using catalytic iron and benzoyl peroxide as the terminal oxidant in acetonitrile solvent at ambient temperature. The reaction shows a broad substrate scope including cyclic and acyclic siloxydienes derived from ketones, aldehydes, and esters, which are converted to 1,8-dicarbonyl compounds under mild catalytic reaction conditions in 19-89 % yield across 30 examples. The method is suitable for the coupling of sterically demanding carbon centers, including the formation of vicinal quaternary centers. Conceptually, the dienol ether serves as a precursor to a conjugated radical cation, which undergoes highly site selective γ-dimerization reactions. The γ-γ dimerization strategy is applied to the synthesis of a bioactive analogue of honokiol.

Abstract
The functionalisation of C-H bonds has been an enormous achievement in synthetic methodology, enabling new retrosynthetic disconnections and affording simple synthetic equivalents for synthons. Hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) is a key method for forming alkyl radicals from C-H substrates. Classic reactions, including the Barton nitrite ester reaction and Hofmann-Löffler-Freytag reaction, among others, provided early examples of HAT. However, recent developments in photoredox catalysis and electrochemistry have made HAT a powerful synthetic tool capable of introducing a wide range of functional groups into C-H bonds. Moreover, greater mechanistic insights into HAT have stimulated the development of increasingly site-selective protocols. Site-selectivity can be achieved through the tuning of electron density at certain C-H bonds using additives, a judicious choice of HAT reagent, and a solvent system. Herein, we describe the latest methods for functionalizing C-H/Si-H/Ge-H bonds using indirect HAT between 2018-2023, as well as a critical discussion of new HAT reagents, mechanistic aspects, substrate scopes, and background contexts of the protocols.

Abstract
One of the important reactions to obtain a new carbon-carbon bond is the Stetter reaction, which is generally via a nucleophilic catalyst like cyanide or thiazolium-NHC catalysts. In particular, 1,4-diketones with very functional properties are obtained by the Stetter reaction with the intermolecular reaction of an aldehyde and an α,β-unsaturated ketone. In this study, we synthesized new derivatives (substituted arenoxy) of 1,4-diketone compounds (2a-2n) with useful features by a new version of the Stetter reaction method. In our work, arenoxy benzaldehyde derivatives with different structures as the Michael donor and methyl vinyl ketone as the Michael acceptor were used for the intermolecular Stetter reaction. The reaction was catalyzed by 3-benzyl-5-(2-hydroxyethyl)-4-methylthiazolium chloride (3b), using triethylamine for the basic medium and dimethyl sulfoxide as the solvent. As a result, some novel arenoxy-substituted 1,4-diketones were gained with good yields at room temperature within 24 h through an intermolecular Stetter reaction. In addition, new furan and pyrrole derivatives were prepared by performing the cyclization reaction with one of the obtained new diketone compounds.

Abstract
Spiro[indoline-3,4'-piperidine] is a fundamental motif present in various biologically active compounds. Here, we report an intramolecular oxidative coupling reaction of oxindoles with β-dicarbonyls in the presence of a guanidinium hypoiodite catalyst, providing spiro-coupling products in moderate to excellent yields. Furthermore, a chiral hypoiodite catalyst derived from the chiral guanidinium organocatalyst is effective for the challenging asymmetric carbon-carbon bond-forming reaction, affording optically active spiro[indoline-3,4'-piperidines].

Abstract
Bioassay-guided isolation of spiroaspertrione A from cultures of Aspergillus sp. TJ23 in 2017 demonstrated potent resensitization of oxacillin against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus by lowering the oxacillin minimal inhibitory concentration up to 32-fold. Abstract
An efficient and green route of C-C bond formation was disclosed to construct 2,3-diaryl-1,4-diketones from α-methylene ketones by the catalysis of tetrabutylammonium iodide (TBAI) with tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as an oxidant in water. This reaction affords the desired products in good to excellent yields from readily available materials, with a broad substrate scope, good functional group tolerance, and mild reaction conditions. Furthermore, tetrasubstituted furan and pyrrole were smoothly constructed from α-methylene ketones in one pot with 96 and 90% yields, respectively.

Abstract
Soft enolization conditions are revealed to be markedly better than the typically applied hard enolization protocols for regioselective enoxysilane formation from unsymmetrical 3-substituted cycloalkanones. Five-, six-, and seven-membered cycloalkanones each with 3-methyl, 3-isopropyl, or 3-phenyl substituents were investigated, and in all but one case, regioselectivities were ≥11:1 for enolization away from the substituent. These results are complementary to the regiospecific enoxysilane formation derived from cycloalkenone conjugate addition/enolate silylation.

Abstract
Anodic olefin coupling reactions generate new bonds and ring skeletons through a net two electron process that reverses the polarity of a known, electron-rich functional group. While much of the early work on the mechanism of these reactions focused on the initial oxidation and cyclization steps of the process, the second oxidation step also plays a central role in determining the success of the reaction. Evidence supporting this observation is presented, along with evidence that optimization of this second oxidation step is not enough to pull a poor cyclization to the desired product. Successful cyclization reactions require optimization of both processes.

Abstract
Diastereoselective oxidative coupling of ketones through a silyl bis-enol ether intermediate by anodic and photocatalytic oxidation is reported. These methods provide several 1,4-diketones in good yields without the need for stoichiometric metal oxidants. The strategic use of a silicon tether enables the coupling of both aromatic and aliphatic ketones as well as the synthesis of quaternary centers. Cyclic voltammetry is used to gain insight into the oxidation events of the reaction.

Abstract
The Cu-catalyzed oxidative cross-coupling of N- and O-nucleophiles with aryl boronic acids (the Chan-Lam reaction) remains among the most useful approaches to prepare aniline and phenol derivatives. The combination of high chemoselectivity, mild reaction conditions, and the ability to use simple Cu-salts as catalysts makes this process a valuable alternative to aromatic substitutions and Pd-catalyzed reactions of aryl electrophiles (Buchwald-Hartwig coupling). Despite the widespread use of Chan-Lam reactions in synthesis, the analogous carbon-carbon bond forming variant of this process had not been developed prior to our work. This feature article describes our discovery and application of Cu-catalyzed oxidative coupling reactions of activated methylene derivatives or carboxylic acids with nucleophiles including aryl boronic esters and amines.

Abstract
A visible-light-induced metal-free synthesis of 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds from alkyne-containing aryl iodides via photochemical C-I bond cleavage, intramolecular cyclization, oxidation, and intermolecular radical coupling sequence is reported. TEMPO was employed as the oxygen atom donor in this transformation. This protocol provided a new strategy for the synthesis of 1,4-dicarbonyl bifluorene compounds.

Abstract
A concise and diastereoselective construction of the ABCD ring system of spirochensilide A is described. The key steps of this synthesis are a semipinacol rearrangement reaction to stereoselectively construct the AB ring system bearing two vicinal quaternary chiral centers and a Co-mediated Pauson-Khand reaction to form the spiro-based bicyclic CD ring system. This chemistry leads to the stereoselective synthesis of 13(R)-demethyl spirochensilide A, paving the way for the first asymmetric total synthesis of (-)-spirochensilide A.

Abstract
The final phase of the total synthesis of (-)-spirochensilide A is described. A tungsten-mediated cyclopropene-based Pauson-Khand reaction was developed to form the spiral CD ring system with desired stereochemistry at the C13 quaternary center. Other important steps enabling completion of this synthesis included an intermolecular aldol condensation to link the ABCD core with the EF fragment and a Cu-mediated 1,4-addition to stereoselectively install the C21 stereogenic center. The chemistry developed for this total synthesis of (-)-spirochensilide A (1) will aid the synthesis of polycyclic natural products bearing this unique spiral ring system.

Abstract
An efficient and straightforward gold-catalyzed protocol for the synthesis of 2-substituted 4-oxo-4-arylbutanal derivatives from commercially available or easily accessible alkynes and vinylsulfoxide substrates has been developed. Extension of the methodology to the use of 1-cycloalkenyl sulfoxides allowed the facile synthesis of five-, six-, and seven-membered-ring cycloalkyl-1-one backbone. Subsequently, the tetrahydrocycloalkyl[b]pyrrole derivatives, which are found in many active pharmaceutical ingredients, were isolated in good yields. Mechanistic investigation highlighted a [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement of a sulfonium intermediate in this process.

Abstract
Di-isopropylphosphino-substituted pincer-ligated iridium catalysts are found to be significantly more effective for the dehydrogenation of simple tertiary amines to give enamines than the previously reported di-t-butylphosphino-substituted species. It is also found that the di-isopropylphosphino-substituted complexes catalyze dehydrogenation of several β-functionalized tertiary amines to give the corresponding 1,2-difunctionalized olefins. The di-t-butylphosphino-substituted species are ineffective for such substrates; presumably, the marked difference is attributable to the lesser crowding of the di-isopropylphosphino-substituted catalysts. Experimentally determined kinetic isotope effects in conjunction with DFT-based analysis support a dehydrogenation mechanism involving initial pre-equilibrium oxidative addition of the amine α-C-H bond followed by rate-determining elimination of the β-C-H bond.

C2, C3-disubstituted indole is one of the most frequently encountered motifs in bioactive alkaloids and medicinal chemistry. Thus, developing novel, concise, and efficient access to it is highly desired in drug discovery. Herein, we present such an approach to this scaffold by direct oxidative coupling of C2-substituted indoles and enolates. Compared with indole bearing no C2-substituent, higher yields (up to 96%) were obtained for C2-substituted indoles in most cases. Mechanistic studies showed the reaction went through a Fe-chelated radical-anion oxidative coupling procedure promoted by C2-substituent on indole by two means: (1) stabilizing C2-radical intermediate during the reaction; (2) reducing indole homocoupling. This approach serves as a synthetic useful tool to quickly build up bioactive small molecule library of C2, C3-disubstituted indoles, and several products showed promising anticancer activities. Besides, indomethacin and its analogs were conveniently prepared in three-step sequence efficiently, indicating the potential application of our approach in medicinal chemistry. Fe-mediated, C2-substitutent promoted oxidative coupling of indoles and enolates Three-steps to prepare indomethacin and its analogues Quick access to complex indoles library bearing anticancer bioactivities

Abstract
We report the development of a photocatalytic strategy for the synthesis of β-functionalized unsymmetrical 1,4-, 1-6 and 1,7-diketones from aroyl chlorides and unactivated alkenes at room temperature. The mild reaction conditions not only tolerate a wide range of functional groups and structural moieties, but also enable migration of a variety of distal groups including (hetero)arenes, nitrile, aldehyde, oxime-derivative, and alkene. The efficiency of chirality transfer, factors that control the distal-group migration, and synthesis of carbo- and heterocycles from the diketones are also described. Mechanistic studies suggest a reaction pathway involving a photocatalytic radical aroylation of unactivated alkenes followed by a distal-group migration, oxidation, and deprotonation to afford the desired diketones.

Abstract
The enantioselective construction of carbon–heteroatom and carbon–carbon bonds alpha to ketones forms substructures that are ubiquitous in natural products, pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. Traditional methods to form such bonds have relied on combining ketone enolates with electrophiles. Reactions with heteroatom-based electrophiles require special reagents in which the heteroatom, which is typically nucleophilic, has been rendered electrophilic by changes to the oxidation state. The resulting products usually require post-synthetic transformations to unveil the functional group in the final desired products. Moreover, different catalytic systems are typically required for the reaction of different electrophiles. Here, we report a strategy for the formal enantioselective α-functionalization of ketones to form products containing a diverse array of substituents at the alpha position with a single catalyst. This strategy involves an unusual reversal of the role of the nucleophile and electrophile to form C–N, C–O, C–S, and C–C bonds from a series of masked ketone electrophiles and a wide range of conventional heteroatom and carbon nucleophiles catalyzed by a metallacyclic iridium catalyst.

Abstract
A cooperative Lewis acid/photocatalytic reduction of arylidene malonates yields a versatile radical anion species. This intermediate preferentially undergoes intermolecular radical-radical coupling reactions, and not the conjugate addition-dimerization reactivity typically observed in the single-electron reduction of conjugate acceptors. Reported here is the development of this open-shell species in intermolecular radical-radical cross couplings, radical dimerizations, and transfer hydrogenations. This reactivity underscores the enabling modularity of cooperative catalysis and demonstrates the utility of stabilized enoate-derived radical anions in intermolecular bond forming reactions.

Abstract
The stereoselective oxidative coupling of cyclic ketones via silyl bis-enol ethers followed by ring-closing metathesis is shown to be a general and powerful reaction sequence for the preparation of diverse polycyclic scaffolds from simple precursors. The modular strategy successfully constructs substructures prevalent in numerous bioactive natural product families, varying in substitution and carbocyclic composition. Several of the prepared compounds were shown to possess potent cytotoxic activity against a panel of tumor cell lines. The utility of this strategy was further demonstrated by a concise and highly convergent 17-step formal synthesis of the complex antimalarial marine diterpene, (+)-7,20-diisocyanoadociane.

A new approach for
the synthesis of 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds is
reported. Chemoselective activation of amide carbonyl functionality
and subsequent umpolung viaN-oxide
addition generates an electrophilic enolonium species that can be
coupled with a wide range of nucleophilic enolates. The method conveys
broad functional group tolerance on both components, does not suffer
from formation of homocoupling byproducts and avoids the use of transition
