Abstract
Since the chemical industry is largely dependent on petrol-based feedstocks, new sources are required for a sustainable industry. Conversion of biomass to high-value compounds provides an environmentally friendly and sustainable approach, which might be a potential solution to reduce petrol-based starting materials. This also applies for N-heterocycles, which are a common structural motif in natural products, pharmaceuticals and functional polymers. The synthesis of pyrroles is a well-studied and established process. Nevertheless, most routes described are not in line with the principles of green and sustainable chemistry and employ harsh reaction conditions and harmful solvents. In this study, 3,4-dihydroxyketons are used as excellent platform chemicals for the production of N-substituted pyrrole-2-carboxylic- and pyrrole-2,5-dicarboxylic acids, as they can be prepared from glucose through the intermediate d-glucarate and converted into pyrrolic acid derivatives under mild conditions in water. The scope of this so far unknown reaction was examined using a variety of primary amines and aqueous ammonium chloride leading to pyrrolic acid derivatives with N-substituents like alkane-, alkene-, phenyl- and alcohol-groups with yields up to 20 %. The combination of both, enzymatic conversion and chemical reaction opens up new possibilities for further process development. Therefore, a continuous chemo-enzymatic system was set up by first employing an immobilized enzyme to catalyze the conversion of d-glucarate to the 3,4-dihydroxyketone, which is further converted to the pyrrolic acid derivatives by a chemical step in continuous flow.

Abstract
The new title pyrrole-pyrazole derivative, C16H16BrN3, was synthesized through a citric acid-catalyzed Paal-Knorr reaction between acetonylacetone and 1-(4-bromophenyl)-3-methyl-1H-pyrazol-5-amine under mild reaction conditions. This synthetic protocol is noteworthy for its utilization of stoichiometric amounts of the reactants, an ecofriendly solvent and a cost-effective, non-toxic and biodegradable organocatalyst. A comprehensive understanding of the molecular structure was gained through spectroscopic, thermal and X-ray crystallographic analyses. The crystal structure is characterized by weak interactions, where only C-H...π connections contribute to the hydrogen-bond contacts. The supramolecular assembly is controlled by dispersion forces. However, the energy frameworks demonstrate that these forces act in three dimensions, providing enough stability, as observed in TGA-DSC (thermogravimetric analysis-differential scanning calorimetry) studies.

Abstract
An expeditious green method for the synthesis of diverse valued substituted pyrroles through a Paal-Knorr condensation reaction, using a variety of amines and 2,5-hexanedione/2,5-dimethoxytetrahydrofuran in the presence of a low melting mixture of N,N'-dimethylurea and L-(+)-tartaric acid (which acts as a dual catalyst/solvent system), has fruitfully been revealed. Herein, we have disclosed the applicability of this simple yet effective strategy for the generation of mono- and dipyrroles in good to excellent yields. Moreover, C3-symmetric tripyrrolo-truxene derivatives have also been assembled by means of cyclotrimerization, Paal-Knorr and Clauson-Kaas reactions as crucial steps. Interestingly, the melting mixture was recovered and reused with only a gradual decrease in the catalytic activity (over four cycles) without any significant drop in the yield of the product. This particular methodology is simple, rapid, environmental friendly, and high yielding for the generation of a variety of pyrroles. To the best of our knowledge, the present work reveals the fastest greener method reported up to this date for the construction of substituted pyrroles by utilizing the Paal-Knorr synthetic protocol, achieving impressive yields under operationally simple reaction conditions without involving any precarious/dangerous catalysts or unsafe volatile organic solvents.

Abstract
A green and simple approach was developed for the regioselective synthesis of structurally diverse chromenopyrrole frameworks from 3-formylchromones, active methylenes, and α-azido ketones using piperidine as a catalyst in the aqueous medium through a tandem one-pot multicomponent reaction. Further, the synthesized pyrrole framework was successfully converted into biologically significant 6-azaindole derivatives in a simple synthetic transformation. An exciting feature of this synthetic protocol is that the reaction mechanism and formation of the products depend on the nature of the active methylene used. This approach has several advantages such as a transition-metal-free catalyst, a short reaction time, easy separation, an excellent yield, practically simple execution, high regioselectivity, very good atom economy, low E-factor, and no requirement of toxic solvents and chromatographic purification.

Abstract
AbstractIndibulin is one of the most potent tubulin polymerization inhibitors with minimal peripheral neuropathy. The design and synthesis of new indibulin analogs were carried out in order to investigate their anti-cancer activity. The target compounds 4a–i were synthesized in multistep reactions starting with the related indole derivatives. Compound 4f shows the highest cytotoxic activity on HT-29 and Caco-2 cell lines with the respective half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of 5.1 μm and 7.3 μm. In the case of the T47-D cell line, compound 4c exerts the best cytotoxic activity with an IC50 value of 11.5 μm. In the cell cycle analysis on HT-29 cells, compound 4f at 5.1 μm showed an increase in the percentage of cells in the sub-G1 phase. Altogether, nine target compounds were synthesized and characterized by infrared spectroscopy (IR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (13C NMR), mass spectrometry (MS) and elemental analysis. Some of the compounds show good cytotoxic activity against cancerous cell lines.

Abstract
In the last decades many efforts have been devoted to design supramolecular organocatalysts able to work in water as the reaction medium. The use of water as solvent provides promising benefits with respect to environmental impact. In this context, macrocyclic compounds played a role of primary importance thanks to their ease of synthesis and their molecular recognition abilities toward the reactants. The aim of this review is to give an overview of the recent advances in the field of supramolecular organocatalysis in water, focusing the attention on calixarene and cyclodextrins derivatives. Calixarenes and cyclodextrins, thanks to their hydrophobic cavities, are able to host selectively the substrates isolating they from the reaction environment. In addition, the synthetic versatilities of these macrocycles permits to introduce useful functional groups in close proximity of the hydrophobic binding sites. Regarding the cyclodextrins (CDs), we have here reviewed the their most recent uses as organocatalysts for the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds, in multi-component reactions and in carbon-carbon bond forming reactions. Examples have been reported in which CD catalysts are able to drive the regiochemistry of common organic reactions. In addition, cyclodextrins bearing catalytically active chiral groups, have shown excellent enantioselectivity in the catalysis of organic reactions. Recently reported results have shown that calixarene derivatives are able to accelerate organic reaction under “on-water” conditions with a significant selectivity toward the reactants. Under “on-water conditions” the hydrophobic effect, induced by insoluble calixarene derivatives, forces the reactants and the catalyst to aggregate and thus accelerating the reaction between them thanks to an amplification of weak secondary interactions. Regarding the use of water-soluble calixarene organocatalysts, we have here reviewed their role in the acceleration of common organic reactions.

Abstract
A novel and efficient Cu(OAc)2 -catalyzed hydroamination cyclization and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-mediated oxidative dehydrogenation cascade reaction of homopropargylic amines has been developed. A library of 1,2-disubstituted pyrrole derivatives were obtained in good-to-high yields in one pot with no step-by-step feeding process. This reaction involved TEMPO playing dual roles as both an oxidative dehydrogenation reagent and a ligand. An insight into the reaction mechanism was obtained by using several analytical determination methods.

Abstract
Abstract
A facile and sustainable functionalization of graphene layers was performed with pyrrole compounds (PyC) prepared through the Paal–Knorr reaction of a primary amine with 2,5-hexanedione. A good number of primary amines were used: hexanamine, dodecanamine, octadecanamine, 2-aminoacetic acid, 2-amino-1,3-propanediol, 3-(triethoxysilyl)propan-1-amine. The reactions were characterized by good yield, up to 96%, and indeed satisfactory atom efficiency, up to 80%. The functionalization of graphene layers was obtained by mixing PyC with a high surface area graphite and heating at a temperature range from 130°C to 150°C for 3 h. The yield of functionalization reaction was larger than 60% and also up to about 90% for the pyrrole compounds from dodecanamine and 2-amino-1,3-propanediol, respectively. The cycloaddition reaction between the graphene layers and the pyrrole compound, oxidized in two position, is proposed as working hypothesis to account for such efficient functionalization. Raman spectroscopy revealed that the structure of the graphitic substrate remained substantially unaltered, after the reaction. Stable dispersions of HSAG adducts with different PyC were prepared in solvents with different solubility parameters and HRTEM analysis showed the presence of aggregates of only few layers of graphene. Qualitative results of dispersion tests were used to calculate the Hansen sphere for the HSAG adduct with the pyrrole compound based on dodecanamine so to provide a first estimate of its Hansen solubility parameters. This work paves the way for the facile and sustainable modification of the solubility parameters of graphene layers and for the predictive assessment of their compatibility with different environments.
