Selective Oxidative Cleavage of Benzyl C-N Bond under Metal-Free Electrochemical Conditions

With the growing significance of green chemistry in organic synthesis, electrochemical oxidation has seen rapid development. Compounds undergo oxidation-reduction reactions through electron transfer at the electrode surface. This article proposes the use of electrochemical methods to achieve cleavage of the benzyl C-N bond. This method selectively oxidatively cleaves the C-N bond without the need for metal catalysts or external oxidants. Additionally, primary, secondary, and tertiary amines exhibit good adaptability under these conditions, utilizing water as the sole source of oxygen.

Versatile Synthesis of Symmetric and Unsymmetric Imines via Photoelectrochemical Catalysis: Application to N-Terminal Modification of Phenylalanine

A strategy that combines electrochemical synthesis and photoredox catalysis was reported for the efficient synthesis of imines. This approach was demonstrated to be highly versatile in producing various types of imines, including symmetric and unsymmetric imines, by exploring the impact of different substituents on the benzene ring of the arylamine. Additionally, the method was specifically applied to modify N-terminal phenylalanine residues and was found to be successful in the photoelectrochemical cross-coupling reaction between NH2 -Phe-OMe and aryl methylamines, leading to the synthesis of phenylalanine-containing imines. Therefore, this technique would present a convenient and efficient platform for synthesizing imines, with promising applications in chemical biology, drug development, and organic synthesis.

Site-Selective Oxidative Coupling Reaction of Diamines toward Aminoazo Compounds

A selective oxidative coupling reaction of a diamine containing both C- and N-NH₂ was achieved using acidic potassium permanganate as the coupling reagent. The reaction conditions were optimized, and the reaction selectivity was illustrated by quantum calculations. Furthermore, the azo-coupled product was derivatized to four nitroamine energetic materials with excellent detonation performances.

C70 Fullerene Catalyzed Photoinduced Aerobic Oxidation of Benzylamines to Imines and Aldehydes

C₇₀ fullerene catalyzed photoinduced oxidation of benzylic amines at ambient conditions has been explored here. The developed strategy's main feature includes the additive/oxidant-free conversion of benzylic amine to corresponding imine and aldehydes. The reaction manifests broad substrate scope with excellent function group leniency and is applicable up to the gram scale. Further, symmetrical secondary amines can also be synthesized from benzylic amine in a one-pot two-step process. Various experiments and density functional theory studies revealed that the current reaction involves the generation of reactive oxygen species, single electron transfer reaction, and benzyl radical formation as key steps under photocatalytic conditions.

Oxidative Amidation of Amines in Tandem with Transamidation: A Route to Amides Using Visible-Light Energy

A methodology is reported for preparing amides using amines as an acyl source. The protocol involves the visible-light-promoted oxidative amidation of amines with pyrazole to synthesize N-acyl pyrazoles followed by transamidation. By combining photoredox catalysis with oxoammonium cations in the presence of sodium persulfate as a terminal oxidant, the N-acyl pyrazoles could be prepared efficiently and effectively using blue LEDs. The transamidation step was performed without the need to purify the N-acyl pyrazole intermediate, and a range of amides were generated in good to excellent yields.

Metal-free mechanochemical oxidations in Ertalyte® jars

Aimed at eliminating or at least significantly reducing the use of solvents, sodium hypochlorite pentahydrate crystals (NaOCl·5H2O) in the presence of a catalytic amount of a nitrosyl radical (TEMPO or AZADO) have been successfully used to induce mechanochemical oxidative processes on several structurally different primary and secondary alcohols. The proposed redox process is safe, inexpensive and performing effectively, especially on the macroscale. Herein, an Ertalyte® jar has been successfully used, for the first time, in a mechanochemical process.

A Practical Oxidative Conversion of Aldehydes into N-Chloroaldimines

A novel method for the preparation of N-chloroaldimines from commonly available aromatic aldehydes has been developed. The reaction proceeded effectively by two steps: aldehydes were initially transformed into imines and then chloro-substitution with NaClO2 gave the N-chloroaldimines. This simple protocol allows for the preparation of a variety of aromatic N-chloroaldimines in moderate to excellent yields without the isolation of the imine intermediate. We also found that 3-nitrobenzaldehyde and 4-cyanobenzaldehyde were converted into the related benzonitrile directly under the standard conditions.

Sodium periodate/TEMPO as a selective and efficient system for amine oxidation

A new metal-free protocol for promoting oxidation of amines in aqueous-organic medium was developed. NaIO₄ and TEMPO as the catalyst emerged as the most efficient and selective system for oxidation of differently substituted benzyl amines to the corresponding benzaldehydes without overoxidation. Unsymmetrical secondary amines underwent selective oxidation only at the benzylic position thus realising an oxidative deprotection of a benzylic group with an easy amine recovery.

NaIO₄/TEMPO efficiently allowed a metal-free oxidation of benzylamines to benzaldehydes with complete selectivity for N-benzyl residues in secondary amines.

Metal-free hypervalent iodine/TEMPO mediated oxidation of amines and mechanistic insight into the reaction pathways

A highly efficient metal free approach for the oxidation of primary and secondary amines to their corresponding aldehydes and ketones using PhI(OAc)₂ in combination with a catalytic amount of TEMPO as an oxidizing agent is described. This protocol is rapid and provides diverse products under milder reaction conditions in excellent yields. In addition, the mechanistic study is well demonstrated by spectroscopic methods.

Mechanically induced oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes and ketones in ambient air: Revisiting TEMPO-assisted oxidations

The present work addresses the development of an eco-friendly and cost-efficient protocol for the oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes and ketones by mechanical processing under air. Ball milling was shown to promote the quantitative conversion of a broad set of alcohols into carbonyl compounds with no trace of an over-oxidation to carboxylic acids. The mechanochemical reaction exhibited higher yields and rates than the classical, homogeneous, TEMPO-based oxidation.
