Iron(III) Porphyrin Catalyzed Olefination of Aldehydes with 2,2,2-Trifluorodiazoethane (CF3 CHN2 )

Multi-substituted trifluoromethyl alkene construction via gold-catalyzed fluoroarylation of gem-difluoroallenes

An unprecedented fluoroarylation of 1,1-difluoroallenes with a cost-effective nucleophilic fluoride reagent and aryldiazonium salts is reported. This visible light promoted gold-catalyzed reaction allows a stereo- and regioselective incorporation of both the fluorine atom and aryl group, enabling a straightforward construction of multi-substituted trifluoromethyl alkenes. Under the mild reaction conditions, a nice tolerance of diverse functional groups is achieved. The high regioselectivity for fluorine-incorporation is rationalized by considering the thermodynamic driving force of trifluoromethyl group formation, whereas the counterintuitive stereoselectivity that aryl is installed on the side of the bulkier γ-substituent is interpreted by alleviating the increasing 1,3-allylic interaction in the gold-coordinated allene intermediate en route to the product.

Reactivity of Nickel Complexes Bearing P(C=X)P Ligands (X = O, N) Toward Diazoalkanes: Evidence for Phosphorus Ylide Intermediates

Nickel carbenes are attracting attention for the development of more sustainable catalysts, among others, for cyclopropanation. Intramolecular trapping of a nickel carbene intermediate with an olefin incorporated in a P(C=C)P Ni pincer complex had previously allowed the isolation of a nickelacyclobutane intermediate and a detailed characterization of its reactivity. Herein, we report the reactivity of related nickel pincer complexes bearing a ketone P(C=O)P or an imine P(C=N)P with diazoalkanes as the carbene precursor. The observed reactivity suggests, in both cases, the reaction of the transient nickel carbene with one of the phosphine arms to form phosphorus ylides that subsequently react with the unsaturated backbone. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are used to shed light on the mechanisms of these reactions.

Stereoselective Copper-Catalyzed Olefination of Imines

Alkenes are an important class of organic molecules found among synthetic intermediates and bioactive compounds. They are commonly synthesized through stoichiometric Wittig-type olefination of carbonyls and imines, using ylides or their equivalents. Despite the importance of Wittig-type olefination reactions, their catalytic variants remain underdeveloped. We explored the use of transition metal catalysis to form ylide equivalents from readily available starting materials. Our investigation led to a new copper-catalyzed olefination of imines with alkenyl boronate esters as coupling partners. We identified a heterobimetallic complex, obtained by hydrocupration of the alkenyl boronate esters, as the key catalytic intermediate that serves as an ylide equivalent. The high E-selectivity observed in the reaction is due to the stereoselective addition of this intermediate to an imine, followed by stereospecific anti-elimination.

Iron(II) Phthalocyanine-Catalyzed Olefination of Aldehydes with Diazoacetonitrile: A Novel Approach to Construct Alkenyl Nitriles

A novel synthetic approach to preparing alkenyl nitriles via the olefination of aldehydes with diazoacetonitrile catalyzed by iron(II) phthalocyanine in the presence of PPh3 has been developed. A broad variety of aldehydes are efficiently transformed into the corresponding products with the high yields of 75%-97%. And it is also suitable for its gram-scale preparation. The suggested mechanism involves the transformation of the phosphazine to ylide by iron(II) phthalocyanine.

Visible-Light-Induced Metal-Free Decarboxylative Perfluoroalkylation of Aryl Acrylic Acids

Perfluoroalkylation is important for late-stage modification of biologically active molecules. Herein, we report a protocol for visible-light-induced perfluoroalkylation reactions of aryl acrylic acids. These reactions, which use perfluoroalkyl iodides as radical precursors and inexpensive eosin Y as a photocatalyst, proceed in a decarboxylative manner. The easy accessibility of perfluoroalkyl iodides and the broad substrate scope, mild conditions, and metal-free catalyst make this protocol applicable for the transformation of inexpensive raw materials to high-value chemicals.

Copper Porphyrin-catalyzed C(sp3)-H Activation via Cross Dehydrogenative Coupling: Facile Transformation of Aldehydes to Esters

Copper porphyrin-catalyzed alkane C−H bond functionalization with aldehydes via cross dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) using DTBP oxidant has been firstly described in non-solvents or non-additives system. Different aryl/heteroaryl-carboxilic esters were obtained in good to excellent yields depending on the aldehyde derivatives. This CDC reaction catalyzed by copper porphyrin has the advantages of shorter reaction time, lower reaction temperature and catalyst loading as well as the aerobic reaction atmosphere.

Ag-Catalyzed Trifluoromethylative Ring Expansion of Isatins and Isatin Ketimines with Trifluorodiazoethane

A general method for the construction of trifluoromethylated 2-quinolinones has been established herein by using a trifluoromethylative ring expansion of isatin with trifluorodiazoethane. The strategy provides a platform for the rapid synthesis of a wide range of substituted 3-hydroxy-4-trifluoromethyl-2-quinolinones. This operationally simple and robust Ag-catalyzed protocol successfully transforms isatin ketimines to 3-amino-4-trifluoromethylquinolinones in excellent yields. The utility of this novel method is further illustrated by the conversion of the products into various synthetically and medicinally relevant molecules.
