Abstract
This work describes an acid-promoted cyclization of triaryldivinyl ketones containing a thiophene moiety in the α-position. Two cyclization pathways are accessible: one a 4π-Nazarov cyclization and the other we propose to proceed through a 6π electrocyclic mechanism. The relative proportion of products from these divergent pathways is affected by reaction conditions and steric bulk in the substrate. We present experimental and computational evidence that when using HCl in dioxane, the 4π-conrotatory electrocyclization is more favorable, whereas GaCl3 in methylene chloride shifts the chemoselectivity toward a putative 6π-disrotatory electrocyclization. DFT calculations suggest that a complex interplay between kinetic and thermodynamic factors is implicated in the chemodivergent behavior.

Abstract
With the continuous development of halogen bonds, halogen bond donors have been used as clean and efficient catalysts in organic reactions. In this work, with inorganic halides (I2, IBr, ICl, and ICl3) as catalysts and the iso-Nazarov cyclization as the benchmark reaction, we aim at investigating the role of the halogen bond in the catalytic mechanism. The halogen bond catalyzed iso-Nazarov cyclization reaction involves three steps: carbon-carbon coupling process, [1,2]-H shift process, and [1,4]-H shift process. The halogen-bonding interaction promotes the charge accumulation of the oxygen atom in the carbonyl group and decreases the activation energy of the reaction. The catalytic activity of the halogen bond donor is enhanced in the order of I2 < IBr < ICl < ICl3, and it could be predicted that the partial covalent interaction of the I⋯O halogen bond between the catalyst ICl3 and the oxygen atom of the reactant may exhibit good catalytic activity in the experiments. In the [1,4]-H shift process, the two-step hydrogen bond/halogen bond co-catalyzed mechanism exhibits the lowest reaction energy barrier than the one-step water co-catalyzed proton transfer mechanism and the direct one.

Abstract
In addition to stereodefined cis-cyclopentenones, the rearrangement of naturally-occurring vinyl allene oxides can provide ketols, cyclopropylcarbinols, and Favorskii-type bis-(Z)-but-2-en-1-yl acetic acids. These processes have been studied by DFT computations using (Z)-but-1-en-1-yl allene oxides as model systems. Prior studies on the stepwise cascade process starting from (Z)-but-1-en-1-yl allene oxides established as key steps the ring opening of the oxirane to give oxidopentadienyl biradicals, and their isomerization through formation of alkenylcyclopropanone intermediates prior to the conrotatory electrocyclic ring closure to cis-configured cyclopentenones. Under neutral or under acidic conditions, the corresponding ketols and cyclopropylcarbinols have been computationally characterized as resulting from SN2, SN1 and SN1'-type processes, showing that the rearrangement of vinyl allene oxides is pH-dependent. Moreover, stereoconvergent base-induced Favorskii-type rearrangements to provide bis-(Z)-but-1-en-1-yl substituted acetic acids have also been justified. Since the model system captures the structural features of the vinyl allene oxides of biological relevance, our computations provide the most comprehensive overview of the complex reactivity of these natural species.

Abstract
The tandem gold(I)-catalyzed rearrangement/Nazarov reaction of enynyl acetates in which the double bond is embedded in a piperidine ring was computationally and experimentally studied. The theoretical calculations predict that the position of the propargylic acetate substituent has a great impact on the reactivity. In contrast to our previous successful cyclization of the 2-substituted substrates, where the nitrogen favors the formation of the cyclized final product, the substitution at position 3 was computed to have a deleterious effect on the electronic properties of the molecules, increasing the activation barriers of the Nazarov reaction. The sluggish reactivity of 3-substituted piperidines predicted by the calculations was further confirmed by the results obtained with some designed substrates.

Abstract
A chiral N,N′-dioxide/cobalt(ii) complex catalyzed highly diastereoselective and enantioselective tandem aza-Piancatelli rearrangement/intramolecular Diels–Alder reaction has been disclosed. Various valuable hexahydro-2a,5-epoxycyclopenta[cd]isoindoles bearing six contiguous stereocenters have been obtained in good yields with excellent diastereo- and enantio-selectivities from a wide range of both readily available 2-furylcarbinols and N-(furan-2-ylmethyl)anilines. An asymmetric aza-Piancatelli rearrangement/Diels–Alder cascade reaction between 2-furylcarbinols and N-(furan-2-ylmethyl)anilines was realized by using a chiral N,N′-dioxide/cobalt(ii) complex catalyst.![]()
