Abstract
The discovery of new peptides and their derivatives is an outcome of ongoing efforts to identify a peptide with significant biological activity for effective usage as a possible therapeutic agent. Spinorphin peptides have been documented to exhibit numerous applications and features. In this study, biologically active peptide derivatives based on novel peptide analogues of spinorphin conjugated with 5,5'-dimethyl (Dm) and 5,5'-diphenyl (Ph) hydantoin derivatives have been successfully synthesized and characterized. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and spectral methods such as UV-Vis, FT-IR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy), CD (Circular Dichroism), and fluorimetry were used to characterize the microstructure of the resulting compounds. The results revealed changes in peptide morphology as a result of the restructuring of the aminoacidic sequences and aromatic bonds, which is related to the formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonds between tyrosyl groups and the hydantoin moiety. Electrochemical and fluorescence approaches were used to determine some physicochemical parameters related to the biological behavior of the compounds. The biological properties of the spinorphin derivatives were evaluated in vivo for anticonvulsant activity against the psychomotor seizures at different doses of the studied peptides. Both spinorphin analog peptides with Ph and Dm groups showed activity against all three phases of the seizure in the intravenous Pentylenetetrazole Seizure (ivPTZ) test. This suggests that hydantoin residues do not play a crucial role in the structure of spinorphin compounds and in determining the potency to raise the seizure threshold. On the other hand, analogs with a phenytoin residue are active against the drug-resistant epilepsy test (6-Hz test). In addition, bioactivity analyses revealed that the new peptide analogues have the potential to be used as antimicrobial and antioxidant compounds. These findings suggest promising avenues for further research that may lead to the development of alternative medicines or applications in various fields beyond epilepsy treatment.

Abstract
Amino acid and peptide radicals are of broad interest due to their roles in biochemical oxidative damage, pathogenesis and protein radical catalysis, among others. Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the ωB97X-D/def2-QZVPPD//ωB97X-D/def2-TZVPP level of theory, we systematically investigated the hydrogen bonding between water and fourteen α-amino acids (Ala, Asn, Cys, Gln, Gly, His, Met, Phe, Pro, Sel, Ser, Thr, Trp, and Tyr) in both neutral and radical cation forms. For all amino acids surveyed, stronger hydrogen-bonding interactions with water were observed upon single-electron oxidation, with the greatest increases in hydrogen-bonding strength occurring in Gly, Ala and His. We demonstrate that the side chain has a significant impact on the most favorable hydrogen-bonding modes experienced by amino acid radical cations. Our computations also explored the fragmentation of amino acid radical cations through the loss of a COOH radical facilitated by hydrogen bonding. The most favorable pathways provided stabilization of the resulting cationic fragments through hydrogen bonding, resulting in more favorable thermodynamics for the fragmentation process. These results indicate that non-covalent interactions with the environment have a profound impact on the structure and chemical fate of oxidized amino acids.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Synthetic cannabinoids (SCs) are a broad class of illicit drugs that are classified according to the chemical structure of the aromatic core that they present (i.e., indole, imidazole, pyrrole) and their detection is still a challenge, despite their widespread diffusion. The identification of a specific class of SC in complex matrices, such as real samples with a rapid, economic analytical device useable directly in the field, is highly desirable, as it can provide immediate and reliable information that eventually addresses more targeted analyses. RESULTS The present paper proposes a Molecularly Imprinted Polymer (MIP)-based voltammetric sensor for the rapid and selective detection of indazole-type SCs. In this context, a polyacrylate-based MIP was used to functionalize a Pt electrode. The MIP composition was optimized through a Design of Experiments approach, and for the sake of safety, a non-psychotropic compound structurally related to the selected SCs was employed as the template in the MIP formulation. A complete characterization of the electrochemical behavior of the selected SCs was performed, and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) in acetonitrile/lithium perchlorate 0.1 M was the technique applied for their quantification. LOD around 0.01 mM and linearity up to 0.8 mM were found. Comparison with the non-imprinted (NIP) modified and bare electrodes showed better selectivity and reproducibility of the MIP-based sensor. Recovery tests (in the 70-115 % range) were performed on simulated pills and smoking mixtures to test the reliability of the proposed method. SIGNIFICANCE The method proposed allows the identification and quantification of indazole-based SCs as a class in complex matrices. Due to the selectivity of the obtained device, no clean-up of the sample before analyses is needed. For the same reason, the interference of cutting substances and natural cannabinoids was negligible.

Abstract
The superior properties of electrodeposited trimetallic CuZnCo nanoparticles, arising from the synergistic effect of combining the unique features of metallic components, were confirmed using voltametric measurements. The surface morphology and structure of the as-prepared electrocatalysts were determined using scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques. Here, the trimetallic CuZnCo nanoparticles were synthesized as a powerful redox probe and highly efficient signal amplifier for the electrochemical oxidation of tryptophan. Differential pulse voltammetry studies showed a linear relationship with a tryptophan concentration of 5-230 μM, and the low detection limit was identified at 1.1 μM with a sensitivity of 0.1831 μA μM-1 cm-2.

Abstract
Despite the fact that tryptophan (Trp) is an essential amino acid that humans typically obtain through diet, there are several interesting tryptophan dynamics at play in the body. Quantifying and understanding these dynamics are crucial in studies of depression, autism spectrum disorder, and other disorders that involve neurotransmitters directly synthesized from tryptophan. Here we detail the optimization of waveform parameters in fast scan cyclic voltammetry at carbon fiber microelectrodes to yield four-fold higher sensitivity and six-fold higher selectivity compared to previously reported methods. We demonstrate the utility of our method in measuring (1) exogenous Trp dynamics from administration of Trp to PC-12 cells with and without overexpression of tryptophan hydroxylase-2 and (2) endogenous Trp dynamics in pinealocyte cultures with and without stimulation via norepinephrine. We observed interesting differences in Trp dynamics in both model systems, which demonstrate that our method is indeed sensitive to Trp dynamics in different applications.

Abstract
The aim of this electrochemical study was to ascertain which type of electrochemically deposited carbonyl functionalized polymer represents the most suitable electrode substrate for direct covalent immobilization of biological catalysts (enzymes). For this purpose, a triad of amperometric biosensors differing in the type of conductive polymers (poly-vanillin, poly-trans-cinnamaldehyde, and poly-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde) and in the functioning of selected enzymes (tyrosinase and alkaline phosphatase) has been compared for the biosensing of neurotransmitters (dopamine, epinephrine, norepinephrine, and serotonin) and phenyl phosphates (p-aminophenyl phosphate and hydroquinone diphosphate). The individual layers of the polymers were electrochemically deposited onto commercially available screen-printed carbon electrodes (type C110) using repetitive potential cycling in the linear voltammetric mode. Their characterization was subsequently performed by SEM imaging and attenuated total reflectance FTIR spectroscopy. Molecules of enzymes were covalently bonded to the free carbonyl groups in polymers via the Schiff base formation, in some cases even with the use of special cross-linkers. The as-prepared biosensors have been examined using cyclic voltammetry and amperometric detection. In this way, the role of the carbonyl groups embedded in the polymeric structure was defined with respect to the efficiency of binding enzymes, and consequently, via the final (electro)analytical performance.

Abstract
Due to the great significance of amino acids, a substantial number of research studies has been directed toward the development of effective and reliable platforms for their evaluation, detection, and identification. In order to support these studies, a new electrochemical platform based on PANI/ZnO nanowires' modified carbon inks screen-printed electrodes was developed for qualitative analysis of electroactive amino acids, with emphasis on tyrosine (Tyr) and tryptophan (Trp). A comparative investigation of the carbon ink before and after modification with the PANI/ZnO was performed by scanning electron microscopy and by Raman spectroscopy, confirming the presence of PANI and ZnO nanowires. Electrochemical investigations by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy have shown a higher charge-transfer rate constant, which is reflected into lower charge-transfer resistance and higher capacitance values for the PANI/ZnO modified ink when compared to the simple carbon screen-printed electrode. In order to demonstrate the electrochemical performances of the PANI/ZnO nanowires' modified carbon inks screen-printed electrodes for amino acids analysis, differential pulse voltammograms were obtained in individual and mixed solutions of electroactive amino acids. It has been shown that the PANI/ZnO nanowires' modified carbon inks screen-printed electrodes allowed for tyrosine and tryptophan a peak separation of more than 100 mV, enabling their screening and identification in mixed solutions, which is essential for the electrochemical analysis of proteins within the proteomics research field.

Abstract
Some new N- and C-modified biomolecular peptide analogues of both VV-hemorphin-5 and VV-hemorphin-7 with varied amino acids (Cys, Glu, His), 1-adamantanecarboxylic acid, and niacin (nicotinic acid) were synthesized by solid-phase peptide synthesis-Fmoc (9-fluorenylmethoxy-carbonyl) chemistry and were characterized in water solutions with different pH using spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques. Basic physicochemical properties related to the elucidation of the peptide structure at physiological pH have been also studied. The results showed that the interaction of peptide compounds with light and electricity preserves the structural and conformational integrity of the compounds in the solutions. Moreover, textile cotton fibers were modified with the new compounds and the binding of the peptides to the surface of the material was proved by FTIR and SEM analysis. Washing the material with an alkaline soap solution did not show a violation of the modified structure of the cotton. Antiviral activity against the human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV-S2) and human adenovirus serotype 5 (HAdV-5), the antimicrobial activity against B. cereus and P. aeruginosa used as model bacterial strains and cytotoxic effect of the peptide derivatives and modified cotton textile material has been evaluated. Antimicrobial tests showed promising activity of the newly synthesized compounds against the used Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The compounds C-V, H-V, AC-V, and AH-V were found slightly more active than NH7C and NCH7. The activity has been retained after the deposition of the compounds on cotton fibers.

Abstract
An ecofriendly preconcentration method was developed based on the use of Geobacillus galactosidasius sp. nov immobilized on Amberlite XAD-4 as an adsorbent for the preconcentrations of Hg and Sn. SEM-EDX performed for the investigation of surface functionality and morphology. The detailed investigations of factors such as pH of the solution, flow rate, interfering ions and sample volume have been thanks to the optimization of the pre-concentration system. The optimum pHs were found as 5.0-7.0 for Hg and Sn and also the optimum flow rates were determined as 2 mL min-1 for recovery of Hg and Sn. Under the best experimental conditions, limits of detections (LOD) were found as 0.53 ng mL-1 for Hg and 0.27 ng mL-1 for Sn. RSDs were calculated as 8.2% for Hg and 6.9% for Sn. The process was validated to use certified references (fish samples). ICP-OES was used to measure the levels of Hg and Sn in various real meal patterns after the devised technique was used. Concentrations of Hg and Sn were quantitively measured on gluten-free biscuit, flour, rice, Tuna fish, meat, chicken meat, potato, chocolate, coffee, tap water, energy drink and mineral water samples with low RSD. The developed method emerges as an innovative technology that will eliminate the low cost and toxic effect.

Abstract
Oxidative rearrangement of tetrahydro-β-carbolines (THβCs) is one of the most efficient methods for the synthesis of biologically active spirooxindoles, including natural products and drug molecules. Here, we report the first electrochemical approach to achieve this important organic transformation in a flow cell. The key to the high efficiency was the use of a multifunctional LiBr electrolyte, where the bromide (Br−) ion acts as a mediator and catalyst and lithium ion (Li+) acts as a likely hydrophilic spectator, which might considerably reduce diffusion of THβCs into the double layer and thus prevent possible nonselective electrode oxidation of indoles. Additionally, we build a zero-gap flow cell to speed up mass transport and minimize concentration polarization, simultaneously achieving a high faradaic efficiency (FE) of 96% and an outstanding productivity of 0.144 mmol (h−1 cm−2). This electrochemical method is demonstrated with twenty substrates, offering a general, green path towards bioactive spirooxindoles without using hazardous oxidants. A zero-gap flow cell was designed for the first electro-oxidative rearrangement of tetrahydro-β-carbolines to spirooxindoles with high yield, faradaic efficiency and productivity when LiBr was discovered as a bi-functional mediator and catalyst.![]()

Abstract
This study reports a new electrochemical method for tryptamine determination using a paper-based microfluidic device and a thermoplastic electrode (TPE) as an amperometric detector. Tryptamine (Tryp) is a biogenic amine present in drinks and foods. Even though this compound has some beneficial effects on human health, the ingestion of foods with high concentrations of Tryp may be detrimental, which justifies the need for monitoring the Tryp levels. The TPEs were made from 50% carbon black and 50% polycaprolactone and characterized by cyclic voltammetry, demonstrating enhancement in the analytical response compared to other carbon composites. TPEs also showed a better antifouling effect for Tryp compared to conventional glassy carbon electrodes. Once characterized, the electrodes were incorporated into the microfluidic device to determine Tryp in water and cheese samples using amperometry. A linear range was achieved from 10 to 75 μmol L-1 with limits of detection and quantification of 3.2 and 10.5 μmol L-1, respectively. Therefore, this work shows promising findings of the electrochemical determination of Tryp, bringing valuable results regarding the electrochemical properties of thermoplastic composites.

Abstract
Natural phenolic compounds are abundant in the vegetable kingdom, occurring mainly as secondary metabolites in a wide variety of chemical structures. Around 10,000 different plant phenolic derivatives have been isolated and identified. This review provides an exhaustive overview concerning the electron transfer reactions in natural polyphenols, from the point of view of their in vitro antioxidant and/or pro-oxidant mode of action, as well as their identification in highly complex matrixes, for example, fruits, vegetables, wine, food supplements, relevant for food quality control, nutrition, and health research. The accurate assessment of polyphenols' redox behavior is essential, and the application of the electrochemical methods in routine quality control of natural products and foods, where the polyphenols antioxidant activity needs to be quantified in vitro, is of the utmost importance. The phenol moiety oxidation pathways and the effect of substituents and experimental conditions on their electrochemical behavior will be reviewed. The fundamental principles concerning the redox behavior of natural polyphenols, specifically flavonoids and other benzopyran derivatives, phenolic acids and ester derivatives, quinones, lignins, tannins, lignans, essential oils, stilbenes, curcuminoids, and chalcones, will be described. The final sections will focus on the electroanalysis of phenolic antioxidants in natural products and the electroanalytical evaluation of in vitro total antioxidant capacity.

Abstract
A new series of indole-based-sulfonamide derivatives (A1–A8) was synthesized by treating 5-fluoro-1H-indole-3-carbohydrazide with different aryl-sulfonyl chloride in the presence of pyridine. All synthesized derivatives (A1–A8) were characterized by different analytical methods. The electrochemical behavior of these compounds (A1–A8) was investigated in detail using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV) at the pencil graphite electrode (PGE). In the present study, the redox behavior of all derivatives varies due to the nature of substitutions in the indole sulfonamide moiety. Various fundamental electrochemical parameters, including the standard heterogeneous rate constants (ks), and the electroactive surface coverage (Г) were calculated from the obtained CVs. The obtained results shed light on the understanding of structure–activity relationships of this class of compounds.![]()

A Biomimetic, One-Step Transformation of Simple Indolic Compounds to Malassezia-Related Alkaloids with High AhR Potency and Efficacy. Chem Res Toxicol 2019; 32:2238-2249. Abstract
Malassezia furfur isolates from diseased skin preferentially biosynthesize compounds which are among the most active known aryl-hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) inducers, such as indirubin, tryptanthrin, indolo[3,2-b]carbazole, and 6-formylindolo[3,2-b]carbazole. In our effort to study their production from Malassezia spp., we investigated the role of indole-3-carbaldehyde (I3A), the most abundant metabolite of Malassezia when grown on tryptophan agar, as a possible starting material for the biosynthesis of the alkaloids. Treatment of I3A with H2O2 and use of catalysts like diphenyldiselenide resulted in the simultaneous one-step transformation of I3A to indirubin and tryptanthrin in good yields. The same reaction was first applied on simple indole and then on substituted indoles and indole-3-carbaldehydes, leading to a series of mono- and bisubstituted indirubins and tryptanthrins bearing halogens, alkyl, or carbomethoxy groups. Afterward, they were evaluated for their AhR agonist activity in recombinant human and mouse hepatoma cell lines containing a stably transfected AhR-response luciferase reporter gene. Among them, 3,9-dibromotryptanthrin was found to be equipotent to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) as an AhR agonist, and 3-bromotryptanthrin was 10-times more potent than TCDD in the human HG2L7.5c1 cell line. In contrast, 3,9-dibromotryptanthrin and 3-bromotryptanthrin were ∼4000 and >10,000 times less potent than TCDD in the mouse H1L7.5c3 cell line, respectively, demonstrating that they are species-specific AhR agonists. Involvement of the AhR in the action of 3-bromotryptanthrin was confirmed by the ability of the AhR antagonists CH223191 and SR1 to inhibit 3-bromotryptanthrin-dependent reporter gene induction in human HG2L7.5c1 cells. In conclusion, I3A can be the starting material used by Malassezia for the production of both indirubin and tryptanthrin through an oxidation mechanism, and modification of these compounds can produce some highly potent, efficacious and species-selective AhR agonists.

Trp-His covalent adduct in bilirubin oxidase is crucial for effective bilirubin binding but has a minor role in electron transfer. Sci Rep 2019; 9:13700. Abstract
Unlike any protein studied so far, the active site of bilirubin oxidase from Myrothecium verrucaria contains a unique type of covalent link between tryptophan and histidine side chains. The role of this post-translational modification in substrate binding and oxidation is not sufficiently understood. Our structural and mutational studies provide evidence that this Trp396–His398 adduct modifies T1 copper coordination and is an important part of the substrate binding and oxidation site. The presence of the adduct is crucial for oxidation of substituted phenols and it substantially influences the rate of oxidation of bilirubin. Additionally, we bring the first structure of bilirubin oxidase in complex with one of its products, ferricyanide ion, interacting with the modified tryptophan side chain, Arg356 and the active site-forming loop 393-398. The results imply that structurally and chemically distinct types of substrates, including bilirubin, utilize the Trp–His adduct mainly for binding and to a smaller extent for electron transfer.

Abstract
The interaction of proteins with free radicals leads, among other types of damages, to the production of stable carbonyl groups, which can be used as a quantification of oxidative stress at proteins level. The aim of this study was the development of an electrochemical sensor for the detection of carbonyl groups in proteins oxidized by reactive oxygen species. Its working principle is based on the redox properties of dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH). BSA was used as a model protein and its oxidation achieved through Fenton reactions. Using differential pulse voltammetry at glassy carbon electrode, the electrochemical behavior of DNPH and of the native and oxidized BSA was investigated in solution. It has been shown that the hydrazine moiety of the DNPH is the electroactive center and is responsible for carbonyl complexation. Special attention was paid to the immobilization of the DNPH in order to retain its redox properties, and this was achieved on a mixed 4-styrenesulfonic acid-nafion matrix. The sensor's surface characterization and the detection of carbonyl groups in oxidized protein were performed by voltammetry, Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy while the voltammetric results were confirmed by surface plasmon resonance measurements. It has been shown that upon interaction with carbonyl groups of the oxidized protein, the oxidation peak of the hydrazine moiety of DNPH decreases as a function of incubation time and protein concentration. The sensor sensitivity was 0.015 nmol carbonyl per mg of oxidized protein and detection limits of 50 μg oxidized BSA and 0.75 pmol carbonyls.

Abstract
Proteins have been the subject of electrochemical studies. It is possible to apply electrochemical techniques to obtain information about their structure due to the presence of five electroactive amino acids that can be oriented to the outside of the peptidic chain. These amino acids are L-Tryptophan (L-Trp), L-Tyrosine (L-Tyr), L-Histidine (L-His), L-Methionine (L-Met) and L-Cysteine (L-Cys); their electrochemical behavior being subject of extensive research, but it is still controversial. No spectroscopic investigations have been reported on L-Trp, and due to the short life time of the intermediates, ex situ techniques cannot be employed, leading to a never-ending discussion about possible intermediates. In the L-Tyr and L-His cases, spectroelectrochemical studies were performed and different intermediates were observed, suggesting that some intermediates may be observed under specific conditions, as proposed for L-Cys. This amino acid is the most interesting among the electroactive ones because of the presence of a thiol moiety at its side chain, leading to a wide range of oxidation states. It can adsorb onto surfaces of different crystallographic orientation in stereoselective conformation, modifying the surface for different applications.as a surface engineering tool since it plays the role of as an anchor for the growing of nanocrystals inside proteic templates.

Abstract
The time-dependent structural modifications and oxidation behavior of specifically chosen five short amyloid beta (Aβ) peptides, Aβ1-16, Aβ1-28, Aβ10-20, Aβ12-28, and Aβ17-42, fragments of the complete human Aβ1-40 peptide, were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and voltammetry. The objective was to determine the influence of different Aβ domains (VHHQ that contains electroactive histidine H residues, KLVFF that is the peptide hydrophobic aggregation core, and IIGLMVGGVV that is the C-terminus hydrophobic region), and of Aβ peptide hydrophobicity, in the fibrilization mechanism. The short Aβ peptides absence of aggregation or the time-dependent aggregation mechanisms, at room temperature, in free chloride media, within the time window from 0 to 48 h, were established by AFM via changes in their adsorption morphology, and by differential pulse voltammetry, via modifications of the amino acid residues oxidation peak currents. The first oxidation peak was of tyrosine Y residue and the second peak was of histidine H and methionine M residues oxidation. A correlation between the presence of an intact highly hydrophobic KLVFF aggregation core and the time-dependent changes on the Aβ peptides aggregation was found. The hydrophobic C-terminal domain IIGLMVGGVV, present in the Aβ1-40 peptide, also contributed to accelerate the formation of Aβ1-40 peptide aggregates and fibrils.

Abstract
Porous carbons derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials for a number of energy- and environment-related applications, but their almost exclusively microporous texture can be an obstacle to their performance in practical uses. Here, we introduce a novel strategy for the generation of very uniform mesoporosity in a prototypical MOF, namely, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8). The process, referred to as "nanopore lithography", makes use of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets enclosing ZIF-8 particles as masks or templates for the transfer of mesoporous texture to the latter. Upon controlled carbonization and activation, nanopores created in the GO envelope serve as selective entry points for localized etching of carbonized ZIF-8, so that such nanopores are replicated in the MOF-derived carbonaceous structure. The resulting porous carbons are dominated by uniform mesopores ∼3-4 nm in width and possess specific surface areas of ∼1300-1400 m2 g-1. Furthermore, we investigate and discuss the specific experimental conditions that afford the mesopore-templating action of the GO nanosheets. Electrochemical characterization revealed an improved capacitance as well as a faster, more reversible charge/discharge kinetics for the ZIF-8-derived porous carbons obtained through nanopore lithography, relative to those for their counterparts with standard activation (no GO templating), thus indicating the potential practical advantage of the present approach in capacitive energy storage applications.

Abstract
Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a wide group of diseases, characterized by synovial inflammation and joint tissue damage. Due to the delay in the implementation of biomarkers into clinical practice and the association with severe sequels, there is an imperative need for new JIA diagnosis strategies. Electrochemical biosensors based on screen-printed electrodes and peptides are promising alternatives for molecular diagnosis. In this work, a novel biosensor for detecting juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) was developed based on the immobilization of the PRF+1 mimetic peptide, as recognition biological element, on the surface of screen-printed carbon electrode. This biosensor was able to discriminate the JIA positive and negative serum samples from different individuals using differential pulse voltammetry, presenting limits of detection and quantification in diluted samples of 1:784 (v/v) and 1:235 (v/v), respectively. Evaluation by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showed RCT 3 times higher for JIA positive sample than for a pool of human serum samples from healthy individuals. Surface analysis of the biosensor by atomic force microscopy, after contact with JIA positive serum, presented great globular clusters irregularly distributed. The long-term stability of the biosensor was evaluated, remaining functional for over 40 days of storage (after storage at 8°C). Therefore, a simple, miniaturized and selective biosensor was developed, being the first one based on mimetic peptide and screen-printed carbon electrode, aiming at the diagnosis of the juvenile idiopathic arthritis in real serum samples.

Abstract
Wound monitoring and curing is of great importance in biomedical research. This work created a smart bandage that can simultaneously monitor and inhibit wound infection. The main components of the smart bandage are luminescent porous silicon (LuPSi) particles loaded with ciprofloxacin (CIP). This dual luminescent system can undergo accelerated fluorescent color change from red to blue upon the stimulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and elevated pH, which are main biomarkers in the infected wound. The mechanism behind the chemical-triggered fluorescent color change was studied in detail. In vitro experiment showed that the ratiometric fluorescent intensity (IRed/IBlue) of CIP-LuPSi particles decreased from 10 to 0.03 at pH 7.5 after 24 h, while the value deceased from 10 to 2.15 at pH 7.0. Strong correlation can be also found between the IRed/IBlue value and ROS concentration ranging from 0.1 to 10 mM. In addition, the oxidation of LuPSi also simultaneously triggered the release of CIP molecules, which exhibited bacterial inhibition activity. Therefore, the ratiometric fluorescent intensity change at red and blue channels can indicate not only the wound infection status but also the release of antibiotics. In vivo test proved that the smart bandage could distinguish infected wounds from acute wounds, just relying on the naked eyes or a cell phone camera. On the basis of the Si nanotechnology established in this work, theranostic wound care will be realized in future.

Abstract
In this study, the electrochemical (EC) oxidation of a recalcitrant heterocyclic compound namely pyrrole has been reported using platinum coated titanium (Pt/Ti) electrodes. Response surface methodology (RSM) comprising of full factorial central composite design (CCD) with four factors and five levels has been used to examine the effects of different operating parameters such as current density (j), aqueous solution pH, conductivity (k) and treatment time (t) in an EC batch reactor. Pyrrole mineralization in aqueous solution was examined with multiple responses such as chemical oxygen demand (COD) (response, Y1) and specific energy consumption (SEC) in kWh/kg of COD removed (response, Y2). During multiple response optimization, the desirability function approach was employed to concurrently maximize Y1 and minimize Y2. At the optimum condition, 82.9% COD removal and 7.7 kWh/kg of COD removed were observed. Degradation mechanism of pyrrole in wastewater was elucidated at the optimum condition of treatment by using UV-visible spectroscopy, Fourier transformed infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR), cyclic voltammetry (CV), ion chromatography (IC), higher performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). The degradation pathway of pyrrole was proposed on the basis of the various analysis.

Abstract
The oxidative behaviour of the human amyloid beta (Aβ1-40 and Aβ1-42) peptides and a group of similar peptides: control inverse (Aβ40-1 and Aβ42-1), mutants (Aβ1-40Phe10 and Aβ1-40Nle35), rat Aβ1-40Rat, and fragments (Aβ1-28, Aβ1-16, Aβ10-20, Aβ12-28, and Aβ17-42), in solution or adsorbed, at a glassy carbon electrode, by cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry, were investigated and compared. Structurally the Aβ1-40 and Aβ1-42 sequences contain five electroactive amino acid residues, one tyrosine (Tyr10), three histidines (His6, His13 and His14) and one methionine (Met35). The Aβ peptide 3D structure influenced the exposure of the redox residues to the electrode surface and their oxidation peak currents. Depending on the amino acid sequence length and content, the Aβ peptides gave one or two oxidation peaks. The first electron transfer reaction corresponded to the tyrosine amino acid residue oxidation, and the second to both histidines and methionine amino acid residues. The highest contribution to the second oxidation peak current was from His13, followed by His14 and His6 residues, and Met35 residue had the lowest contribution. The Aβ peptides electron transfer depended on peptide hydrophobicity and 3D structure, the redox residues position in the sequence, the redox residues close to N-termini giving the highest oxidation peak currents.
